Three separate courses are offered for the preprofessional, professional and apprentice levels of dance training. The program is designed for each graded level and offers an intensive and detailed curriculum and performance opportunity to produce results that will last throughout the future training of each student. Using the same approach as our year-round professional training program, we advance our summer international workshops as a platform for training serious-minded students who also wish to be involved intensely in training as well as participating in quality performance opportunities. Nutmeg’s Summer Program builds dance skills and memories for your child with like minded students and highly motivated students who are all pursuing their dream. Dancers of all ages have the opportunity to practice and improve partnering technique in our extensive Summer Programs including to some degree the youngest trainees in the June pre-professional time frame. Repertoire including group partnering selections is a mainstay in the summer curriculum. At some point everyone is a first time Nutmegger. Therefore, we take pride in maintaining a welcoming environment for fellow trainees, faculty and staff. Our summer programs often see repeat attendees seeking support in pursuing a professional career. Each year brings a new Nutmeg experience of warm summer days of classical ballet technique, pointe/men’s work, repertoire, modern choreographic workshops, and classical repertoire. Lasting friendships occur at our R&R events, field trips and Torrington’s weekly European Market Place along Main Street directly in front of the Nutmeg building complex where students have the opportunity to shop and enjoy the ambience in one of New England’s most historic downtown neighborhoods. The Nutmeg campus is located in the heart of Torrington’s Downtown Cultural District. Nutmeg Residency Programs Residency Training Program Academics Nutmeg celebrates its 5th decade as one of the most respected classical dance training programs in the United States. Classical ballet training is the foundation of our curriculum, where quality education, training, and performance of dance have continued to carry forward as hundreds of Nutmeg graduates move on to professional careers or university dance departments. Young dance trainees, driven to explore their dance capabilities through a training school environment, have unique and special characters that need nurturing and comradery to achieve their full potential. The year-round program is perfect for a hard working, focused student. Only a select group of students are chosen yearly for Nutmeg’s accredited training programs. Our standards are high and we seek candidates who are inspired to excel in their dance, academic and community life. The Nutmeg maintains a full, daily academic schedule for grades 9 – 12 administered by The Keystone National High School (www. keystonehighschool.com) and under daily supervision by our Academic Program Director. In cooperation with the Torrington Public Schools, students have access to tutors in language, math and other subjects in addition to preparation classes for SAT exams. For further Academic Information, please contact JoAnne LaVine, Business Manager & Admissions Administrator, at 860.482.4413 x304, or email jlavine@nutmegconservatory.org. Nutmeg’s professional faculty members are dedicated to the success of our students. Under the direction of the Artistic Staff, Housing Directors, and the Administration, the staff conducts regular meetings to discuss the ongoing living, educational, and training needs of each student. Nutmeg’s ambitious academic and training schedule helps to develop each student’s overall confidence and self-esteem. This consistent daily focus on each student’s training needs and deportment produces a detailoriented, respectful, and disciplined trainee. Our students train for almost 6 hours a day. Classes and levels are sized to allow the faculty to know each student and give proper attention and corrections. A student’s training is mastered through daily methodical and technical lessons in Classical Ballet Technique, Pointe, Men’s Work, Partnering, Repertoire, and Performing. The Nutmeg Ballet is the performing unit of the Conservatory and it maintains a full resident year-round and summer performance schedule offering outstanding performance opportunities to The Nutmeg students. The Nutmeg Ballet Conservatory recognizes that concentrated dance training needs to take place alongside serious academic studies at a high school level. The Conservatory Academic Program (CAP) addresses these needs by offering students in grades 9 through 12, an in-house, quality, pre-collegiate education in preparation for their future careers and continued education. Accredited through the National Association of Schools of Dance and in cooperation with the Keystone National High School, The Torrington Public Schools and area University Programs, Nutmeg’s combined live/study and internet based schooling program offers the student a well rounded academic education. Since our inception we have emphasized partnering and our male dance training program. This fundamental understanding and experience of partnering gives young dancers aspiring to enter the professional dance world enormous advantages. Nutmeg’s Male Division is known for the quality of dancers and partners it produces. Female dancers of all ages have the opportunity to practice and improve their partnering technique while attending The Nutmeg. Gaining vital performance experience helps our trainees to learn repertoire, costuming, stage etiquette, and how to engage an audience. Nutmeg’s full performance schedule, including The Nutmeg Ballet performances at The Warner Theatre, The Bushnell and other tour sites, allows the dancers to hone these skills, all of which prove invaluable to our students’ future career possibilities. Our performances take place in major theatrical venues as well as our state-of-the-art facility, designed specifically for dance training. Nutmeg performances have been reviewed and acclaimed by publications such as The New York Times, Dance Magazine, Pointe Magazine, Network TV News Stations, and many others over the years. We are especially proud of having performed for His Excellency, Pope Benedict XVI, at Yankee Stadium in New York City in 2008. In addition, in the summers of 2009, 2010 and 2012 The Nutmeg Ballet performed at Jacob’s Pillow’s Inside/ Out Series and at the Carole and Ray Neag Performing Arts Center at the Warner Theatre where The Nutmeg Ballet is the resident ballet company. Our students build lifelong friendships while living and training at Nutmeg. Non-dance related activities such as country hay rides, school dances, pumpkin carving and holiday giving projects build lasting bonds. Students reside in either the Nutmeg dorm or one of our historic homes in the downtown cultural district of Torrington. Younger students live in Nutmeg’s main facility. A full time, live-in Housing Director resides on the same floor as the students, and Resident Advisors are also present within all Nutmeg living facilities. Hightech security systems are in place throughout our campus. In the main building, Nutmeg maintains a modern card/code access full security system. Security for our students is a priority of our Board of Directors and Staff. Historic and homey, our campus housing prepares the older and post high school student for their next level of training along with the opportunity to take on the transitional responsibilities of a young adult. All of our facilities have architectural beauty and historical significance, and are within walking distance of each other. Our campus is located in the heart of Torrington’s downtown area and our food program is served in the dorms/ house for breakfast and lunch and at the St. Francis School Cafeteria for dinner. (In the summer, all three meals are provided at the St. Francis Cafeteria.) Colorful and spacious rooms, wireless Internet, study rooms, private library and kitchenettes are available for our students’ use. Students are expected to keep a clean and welcoming living environment. This responsibility shapes essential life skills and habits.
