DearFriends,
Through media messaging we hear “It’s not complicated.” (AT&T™) This simple sentence
speaks to the remarkable reality of St. Aloysius Academy, as grounded in our rich heritage, we continue to be a vibrant Catholic educational setting for our students from pre-school Clockhouse to
Grade 8!
Whatever aspect of our Academy community you experience, our foundational attitude – love,
learn and live greater – permeates! It’s our simple but powerful “business as usual” stance. In fact, for
us, it is a way of life! With the nurturing and guidance of dedicated teachers and coaches and the support of their devoted parents, our students excel in academics, music, sports and the fine arts. Their
willingness to put forth great personal effort to try and to achieve produces Wildcat pride every day!
By analogy, it’s the same as the uncomplicated but profound feelings of pride we experienced as we
observed our USA athletes go above and beyond during the Sochi Winter Olympics.
Your loyalty and support, in a very straightforward way, contribute to our Wildcat strong living
legacy! Throughout its almost 120 year existence, the Academy has received many blessings, including
encouragement and financial gifts from alums, parents – both alum and current – and other friends
like you. Your generosity is not complicated but generates significant impact for which we are most
thankful!
With gratitude and love, asking God to bring blessing to your life, sincerely,
Sister Stephen Anne Roderiguez IHM Ed.D.

The Saint
who walked the grounds of Wootton
home of St. Aloysius Academy!!
One of the very special
things about Wootton is that a
saint walked these grounds,
visited here many times, and was
a good friend of the original owners, Mr. & Mrs. George Childs,
as well as the cousin of the
second owners, Mr. & Mrs.
George W. C. Drexel. St.
Katharine Drexel planted a tree
when she was a guest of Mr. &
Mrs. George Childs. There are
not many schools that can claim
this special privilege.
St. Katharine Drexel was
the daughter of Francis Drexel
who was the brother of Anthony
Drexel, the founder of Drexel University.
Anthony Drexel and George Childs were
very good friends, so that what affected
one also affected the other. St. Katharine’s
mother died a month after she was born.
Anthony Drexel and his wife took
Katharine and her older sister Elizabeth
to help care for them. This began a very
special relationship between Katharine
and her uncle Anthony. Because of Anthony’s friendship with George Childs, Mr.
and Mrs. Childs also developed a special
relationship with the girls. The two girls
would spend time during the summer
visiting the Childs. This was a
special time for the Childs,
however, the girls grew
homesick.
After her step-mother’s death,
her father took the three girls
on a trip to Europe to help them deal
with their great loss. While in Europe,
Katharine asked the Pope if he would
please send religious to America to help
with the plight of Indians and Black people.
The Pope told her that she should think of being a missionary herself. She now decided to
follow the Pope’s advice. However, she was
tentative about founding her own community.
She went to the Sisters of Mercy in Pittsburgh
for her religious training. When she finally
professed her vows, her immediate family
was there to share this sacred time.
Among those present were Mr. and
Mrs. George Childs. Katharine
treated Mr. & Mrs. Childs as
her aunt and uncle.
Francis Drexel
remarried and the girls
returned home. Their younger
sister, Louisa, was born and now
the three girls were once again a
happy family. There were many
happy years until the death of her
step-mother followed a year later by
the death of her father. Once again
Anthony Drexel became a very
significant part of her life. Since she
inherited a large fortune, Anthony
helped her with financial advice. It
was after this that Katharine decided
she wanted to become a religious
sister.
The following letter
written to Sister Katharine
Drexel on Christmas Eve in 1889
by George Childs shows the close
relationship they had.
My dear Niece Kate –
Oh, how we do miss our dear good
Sister Katharine at this season of festivities.
We are thinking of you, and wishing we could
be near our dear one, but it is all for the best
and you are happy in doing what you believe
to be your duty.
Our hearts go out to you at this
season, and we know you are thinking
lovingly of us all.
God bless you and may you be
spared many years to continue
your good works.
With ever so much love,
Devoted yours,
Geo. W. Childs.

True Blue Donors
Thank you to our True Blue Donors who have faithfully given to
our Annual Fund for five or more consecutive years. The fund is
the foundation of gift-giving to our school and these donors are
leading the way in commitment to Catholic education. We are
truly grateful for True Blue Donors.
Robert Degnan, class of 1951
shares his memories!!
I started at St. Aloysius
Academy for Boys in 1944.
At that time it was a semi-military
School and one lived there except for
vacations at Christmas and summer. It
was staffed by the Sisters Servants of the
Immaculate Hear of Mary. Sister Mary
Prudentissima was the head of the school and
had been for sometime prior. She was diminutive, austere but fair and one always kept a
wide berth of her. It was every boy’s dread to
be sent to her office. There were a few times in
my years that we met privately in her office.
We lived in dormitories with rows of beds
and a cell in the corner of the
dorm with a white curtain around it.
There dwelled a sister who was in
charge. I think one dorm I was in was
called St. Tarcissius. The bathroom
had rows of sinks and bath tubs, I cannot recall showers at that time and a
sister was in charge there. One I recall
was Sr. Mary Bernadette who could be
volatile at times if one exceeded the
allotted time for a bath. One dorm at a
time went to the lavatories as they were
called. We wore uniforms and had a
Dr. Joseph Jonas who came once a
week to instruct us in military training,
parading and marching. In May the
school would
put on a parade for our parents.
The education at both places
was top notch. Our teachers were
dedicated and caring and in a sense
Surrogate mothers.
You ask what it did for me. Besides the basics
of a first rate education, I was taught the values of a
Christian gentleman and what it is to be well mannered
and gracious. I was taught to learn about and appreciate
my Faith and how to respect other people less fortunate.
I was taught to apply my talents to what I would do,
always be polite and mannerly and conduct myself
properly. The one trait that was harped on quite
frequently was to be neat and orderly—
unfortunately I still strive to achieve this.
The old school closed
in 1950 and with that came
the retirement of “Pruddy.”
I think it broke her heart not to go
with her boys to Bryn Mawr. Here,
we were introduced to Sister Mary
Esther as the new principal of the
Academy. It was like Pope John XXIII
succeeding Pope Pius XII. Bryn Mawr
gave us “men” more responsibilities and
certainly more privacy. The old uniforms
gave way to a more modern dress and we
were allowed to go home more often then
before provided we had behaved.. My dear
friend Sr. Pasquillina kept me there a few
times not just for being an obnoxious teen
but I was a good cleaner as well. Lots of
us boys helped clean the school and
we never complained about it. My
classes were up the hill in what
was once the stables I think.
the gym was there as
well.
During my
Formative years at St. AA,
It was also the grounds for
the aspiring postulants and novices
who would become future IHM’s.
I eventually taught at Bishop Shanahan High
School with Sister Agnella.
Sister was in formation when I was a
student at St. Aloysius. I used to fondly remind
her that she used to wash my underwear and socks
when we lived in West Chester.
Undoubtly, it was StAA that the seeds of my vocation
in life were first sown and for that I am most grateful.
Much of what I learned there and at other schools
proved valuable to me as a teacher. There have been
times in life when I may have gone astray
from those values but I have always been able to
return to the teachings and lessons first
learned at my Alma Mater,
ST. ALOYSIUS ACADEMY...
Graduates Share Memories
Jeffrey Bozzi ‘82 I attended St Aloysius from kindergarten thru 8th grade and I have many
fond memories that include the teachers, the campus, the activities and the many friends that I see
and still are in contact with today (some in my same class and some younger and older)
St A A was a nurturing experience when I was there and it is has proven this consistently throughout the
years as the current families have expressed this same feeling to me now. My memories include the May
Processions, sporting events (field day/ basketball games), and the great chicken cutlets served on
Thursdays for lunch. I still taste them.
Most importantly, I will never forget the continued relationships with friends that all started at St A A
and it is these relationships I don't believe would have happened and started anywhere else. I am truly
grateful for my experience at St A A.
Gregory Deirmengian, MD ‘’92 is an orthopedic surgeon and practices as part of the
Rothman Institute.
As a St Aloysius student from K-8th grade, I feel that I could
not have had a better experience in terms of personal growth
and preparation for future life experiences. St. Aloysius taught
me invaluable study habits and organizational skills such that
when I started high school, I hit the ground with my feet running. In addition, I feel that St. Aloysius taught me how to balance the various aspects of life. At the time, I learned how to
balance academics, sports, and friends,
but over the years I have used these skills to balance work, family, and fun. Having children of my own now, I have come to
realize the importance of early education, and am now able to
better appreciate the importance of the St Aloysius experience in
my life.

John Finley, MD ‘92
I hope all is well. We finally moved to the 'burbs and are not too far down the road in Villanova just
down the street from Notre Dame and the house that Chris Bruno grew up in. My wife is an internist in Wynnewood and I am an interventional cardiologist in Northeast Philly. Actually and ironically you might say, I work mostly out of Aria Torresdale Hospital (previously known as FranfordTorresdale hospital) which is the same site as one of the Drexel's old homes/estates. From one
Drexel estate as a child to now one as an adult.
No potential STAA alumni yet in the household...God willing maybe a class of 2029, 2030?!....we
will see.
"I remember my years fondly at St. Aloysius Academy from 1984-1992 (K-8). The teachers
created a positive and enthusiastic learning environment in intimate classroom settings.
The core of respectful Catholic values surrounded by well rounded, challenging academics along with balanced extra-curricular activities put us in position to succeed at the next
level of education and well beyond. The final products of my classmates from 1992 with
their impressive present day standings speak volumes for STAA. "

Supporting St. Aloysius Academy
A very beneficial way to support St. Aloysius Academy is through Pennsylvania Tax Credits.
The Academy has been granted the status of a Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Organization. This allows the Academy to accept contributions from businesses that operate in Pennsylvania and use those contributions to fund scholarships for children who live within the attendance boundaries of a low-achieving school. The benefit to the contributing business is a
Pennsylvania tax credit equal to 75% of its contribution and 90% if the business contributes
the same amount for two consecutive years. For more information, please visit the Academy’s
website under Support StAA-EITC/OSTC.

In Gratitude
When you come “Home” to the Mansion, or even if you can’t physically
come “Home” to the Mansion for the GALA, this would be the perfect opportunity to honor and thank a “Teacher/Sister “ who still holds a special
place in your heart. A donation of $150 in his/her honor will be recognized in our VIP Hi-Def continuous Promo loop playing all night long on
flat screens at the Mansion.
