“TREMENDOUSLY MOVING” - New York Post AUTUMN PROGRAMMING GUIDE 1 Hello, There’s just one thing I want you to know about Gateway Film Center: We love movies. I mean love love them. The whole team does. And not in the ironic “French-movies-make-me-sound-smart” way. We love movies earnestly, in all their forms, from the big blockbusters to creepy horror stories to touching independents and documentaries that change the world. We believe moving pictures are magical. Seriously – we do. There is no substitute in the human experience for that moment when the theater lights go down around you and some friends, and the first images flicker onto the screen as the story begins. Films transport us, thrill us, bring us closer together and make us feel alive. Our job here is simple: to discover and present to Columbus the absolute best, most unique mix of films the city has ever seen … every week. And that’s what we do. From our exclusives to our extraordinary lineup of film series for every taste, there is no theater like us in town; in fact, I’m not sure there’s one like us in the country. That’s why we made this planning calendar. We wanted you to see, in one place, all the amazing cinema we have planned for you. Take a look and start marking what you’ll come to see. I think you’ll be as excited as we are about this lineup. Thank you for being a part of the Gateway Film Center. Please come say hi next time you visit us, or drop me a line on Facebook or Twitter and tell me what you see. I’d love to talk movies with you. - Chris Hamel, Gateway Film Center President 2 3 #FFOCOL OPENING NIGHT OCTOBER 9 | 7PM PRE-PARTY FILM AT 8:30PM Elliot Smith documentary, Heaven Adores You AN EVENING WITH FILMMAKER TRAVIS MATHEWS OCTOBER 10 | MEET & GREET AT 6PM I Want Your Love, 7:00PM Interior.Leather Bar., 8:45 PM FFOCOL.COM CD 102.5 PRESENTS FILMMAKER JENNI MATZ OCTOBER 14 | 8:30PM MEET & GREET | FILM AT 9:30PM Rye Coalition: Story of the Hard Luck 5 U.S. AND OHIO SHORTS OCTOBER 15 | MEET & GREET 6PM FILMS AT 7PM Check facebook for a full list of shorts. WEEK OF: 6 03/ FRIGHT NIGHT 10/ THE PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS 17/ HALLOWEEN 3 24/ RE-ANIMATOR FRIGHT NIGHT stands the test of time as an entertaining and often surprisingly disturbing scare-fest from the mid 80s. A teenaged boy discovers to his horror that a vampire master (played by Chris Sarandon) has moved in next door, with his creepy half-human sidekick. Can the teen convince his friends the threat is real, and recruit famed movie “vampire killer” Peter Vincent (Roddy McDowall) to help dispatch the demonic creature? Wes Craven (A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET) wrote and directed this surrealistic horror-comedy, which was inspired by a true story of parents keeping their children locked in a basement for years. Fool (Brandon Adams), an African-American teen, breaks into the home of the wealthy landlords who evicted his family from a ghetto tenement. A fortune in gold coins is rumored to exist inside, but Fool discovers that the mansion is a chamber of horrors presided over by a pair of incestuous, serial killer siblings (Everett McGill and Wendy Robie). A terrified old man turns up in hospital, clutching a Halloween mask mass-produced by the Silver Shamrock Company, and screaming, “They are going to kill us all!” When the man is then mysteriously murdered in his hospital bed, Dr. Daniel Challis (Tom Atkins) begins an investigation that will bring him face to face with an insane toymaker with a horrifying plan to destroy the children of America. Scientist Herbert West has discovered a fluid which brings living tissue back to life. With a fellow student and the student’s fiancée, they research by experimenting on their dead cat. Dan, fascinated by West’s research, agrees to smuggle him into the hospital morgue... SOME PEOPLE JUST LIKE MOVIES BETTER AT NIGHT... So for the nocturnal, all movies are just $5 after 11 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Plus, find outrageous, late-night food and drink specials in the Torpedo Room. We also feature one special “Gateway Up Late” movie from the cult vault, the classics canon, or sometimes even, the trash heap. 7 OCT /2014 HITCHCOCKTOBER WEEK OF: 5th Annual HITCHCOCKTOBER We love Alfred Hitchcock so much around here that we renamed the whole month after him. Throughout October revisit the master’s best work on the big screen and enjoy it with an audience that loves his films as much as you do. Includes special screenings at our indie teammate, Studio 35. 8 01/ VERTIGO (1958) at Studio 35 03/ NORTH BY NORTHWEST (1959) at Gateway Film Center 10/ THE BIRDS (1963) at Gateway Film Center 15/ STRANGERS ON A TRAIN (1951) at Studio 35 17/ REAR WINDOW (1954) at Gateway Film Center 24/ PSYCHO (1960) at Gateway Film Center A retired San Francisco detective suffering from acrophobia investigates the strange activities of an old friend’s wife, all the while becoming dangerously obsessed with her. In Hitchcock’s classic NORTH BY NORTHWEST, a suave, successful New York advertising executive (Cary Grant) finds himself, through a case of mistaken identity, embroiled in a web of intrigue and murder that takes him across the country to prove his innocence to the police and get an evil crime syndicate, looking for a lost microfilm, off his tail. The story begins in San Francisco, as an innocuous romantic triangle involving wealthy, spoiled Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren), handsome Mitch Brenner (Rod Taylor), and schoolteacher Annie Hayworth (Suzanne Pleshette). Eventually, the story culminates at the home of Mitch’s mother (Jessica Tandy) in Bodega Bay, where the characters’ sense of security is slowly eroded by the curious behavior of the birds in the area. At first, it’s no more than a sea gull swooping down and pecking at Melanie’s head. But things take an ugly turn when, with no explanation, massive groups of birds begin terrorizing the small bayside town. A psychotic socialite confronts a pro tennis star with a theory on how two complete strangers can get away with murder...a theory that he plans to implement. Laid up with a broken leg, photojournalist L.B. Jeffries (James Stewart) is confined to his tiny, sweltering courtyard apartment. To pass the time between visits from his nurse and his fashion model girlfriend Lisa (Grace Kelly), Jeffries stares through the rear window of his apartment at the goings-on in the other apartments around his courtyard. Of particular interest is seemingly mild-mannered travelling salesman Lars Thorwald (Raymond Burr), who is saddled with a nagging, invalid wife. When one afternoon, Thorwald pulls down his window shade, and his wife’s incessant bray comes to a sudden halt, Jeffries casually concocts a scenario in which Thorwald has murdered his wife and disposed of the body in gruesome fashion. Trouble is, Jeffries’ musings just might happen to be the truth. When a woman is discovered as missing--last seen at the infamous Bates Motel in the desert--her sister and boyfriend visit the place only to find it run by a voyeuristic, taxidermist loner whose possessed by his dead mother and dresses himself up like her, adopting her personality. 9 EVERY WEDS 10:00PM ADMISSION IS FREE EVERY SUN OCTOBER 2014 LINEUP 10:00PM ADMISSION IS FREE BIG SHOWS DESERVE A BIG SCREEN... ABC’S OF DEATH 2 PREMIERES/OCT 31 GFC EXCLUSIVE ABC’s OF DEATH 2 is the follow-up to the most ambitious anthology film ever conceived with productions spanning from Nigeria to UK to Brazil and everywhere in between. The film is comprised of twenty-six individual chapters, each helmed by a different director, and each centered on a word beginning with each letter of the alphabet. There have been many spins on A Christmas Carol – but in movie terms - this is the best. Ebeneezer Scrooge is transformed from cold-hearted businessman into yuppie TV exec Frank Cross (Bill Murray) and made almost likeable despite his obnoxious behavior. SCROOGED is so good that we don’t even mind the fact that it finishes up with a sing-along song. MVP, apart from Murray, goes to Carol Kane’s Ghost of Christmas Present, who has the delightful habit of hitting her charge with a toaster when necessary. And even when not.
