“TREMENDOUSLY MOVING”
- New York Post
AUTUMN PROGRAMMING GUIDE
1
Hello,
There’s just one thing I want you to know about Gateway Film
Center: We love movies.
I mean love love them. The whole team does. And not in the
ironic “French-movies-make-me-sound-smart” way. We love
movies earnestly, in all their forms, from the big blockbusters
to creepy horror stories to touching independents and
documentaries that change the world.
We believe moving pictures are magical. Seriously – we
do. There is no substitute in the human experience for that
moment when the theater lights go down around you and
some friends, and the first images flicker onto the screen as
the story begins. Films transport us, thrill us, bring us closer
together and make us feel alive.
Our job here is simple: to discover and present to Columbus
the absolute best, most unique mix of films the city has
ever seen … every week. And that’s what we do. From our
exclusives to our extraordinary lineup of film series for every
taste, there is no theater like us in town; in fact, I’m not sure
there’s one like us in the country.
That’s why we made this planning calendar. We wanted you
to see, in one place, all the amazing cinema we have planned
for you. Take a look and start marking what you’ll come to
see. I think you’ll be as excited as we are about this lineup.
Thank you for being a part of the Gateway Film Center.
Please come say hi next time you visit us, or drop me a line
on Facebook or Twitter and tell me what you see. I’d love to
talk movies with you.
- Chris Hamel, Gateway Film Center President

RE-ANIMATOR
FRIGHT NIGHT stands the test of time as an entertaining and often surprisingly disturbing scare-fest
from the mid 80s. A teenaged boy discovers to his horror that a vampire master (played by Chris
Sarandon) has moved in next door, with his creepy half-human sidekick. Can the teen convince his
friends the threat is real, and recruit famed movie “vampire killer” Peter Vincent (Roddy McDowall) to
help dispatch the demonic creature?
Wes Craven (A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET) wrote and directed this surrealistic horror-comedy, which
was inspired by a true story of parents keeping their children locked in a basement for years. Fool
(Brandon Adams), an African-American teen, breaks into the home of the wealthy landlords who evicted
his family from a ghetto tenement. A fortune in gold coins is rumored to exist inside, but Fool discovers
that the mansion is a chamber of horrors presided over by a pair of incestuous, serial killer siblings
(Everett McGill and Wendy Robie).
A terrified old man turns up in hospital, clutching a Halloween mask mass-produced by the Silver
Shamrock Company, and screaming, “They are going to kill us all!” When the man is then mysteriously
murdered in his hospital bed, Dr. Daniel Challis (Tom Atkins) begins an investigation that will bring him
face to face with an insane toymaker with a horrifying plan to destroy the children of America.
Scientist Herbert West has discovered a fluid which brings living tissue back to life. With a fellow student
and the student’s fiancée, they research by experimenting on their dead cat. Dan, fascinated by West’s
research, agrees to smuggle him into the hospital morgue...

PSYCHO (1960) at Gateway Film Center
A retired San Francisco detective suffering from acrophobia investigates the strange
activities of an old friend’s wife, all the while becoming dangerously obsessed with her.
In Hitchcock’s classic NORTH BY NORTHWEST, a suave, successful New York advertising
executive (Cary Grant) finds himself, through a case of mistaken identity, embroiled in a
web of intrigue and murder that takes him across the country to prove his innocence to
the police and get an evil crime syndicate, looking for a lost microfilm, off his tail.
The story begins in San Francisco, as an innocuous romantic triangle involving wealthy,
spoiled Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren), handsome Mitch Brenner (Rod Taylor), and
schoolteacher Annie Hayworth (Suzanne Pleshette). Eventually, the story culminates at
the home of Mitch’s mother (Jessica Tandy) in Bodega Bay, where the characters’ sense
of security is slowly eroded by the curious behavior of the birds in the area. At first, it’s no
more than a sea gull swooping down and pecking at Melanie’s head. But things take an
ugly turn when, with no explanation, massive groups of birds begin terrorizing the small
bayside town.
A psychotic socialite confronts a pro tennis star with a theory on how two complete
strangers can get away with murder...a theory that he plans to implement.
Laid up with a broken leg, photojournalist L.B. Jeffries (James Stewart) is confined to his
tiny, sweltering courtyard apartment. To pass the time between visits from his nurse and
his fashion model girlfriend Lisa (Grace Kelly), Jeffries stares through the rear window of
his apartment at the goings-on in the other apartments around his courtyard. Of particular
interest is seemingly mild-mannered travelling salesman Lars Thorwald (Raymond Burr),
who is saddled with a nagging, invalid wife. When one afternoon, Thorwald pulls down his
window shade, and his wife’s incessant bray comes to a sudden halt, Jeffries casually
concocts a scenario in which Thorwald has murdered his wife and disposed of the body in
gruesome fashion. Trouble is, Jeffries’ musings just might happen to be the truth.
When a woman is discovered as missing--last seen at the infamous Bates Motel in
the desert--her sister and boyfriend visit the place only to find it run by a voyeuristic,
taxidermist loner whose possessed by his dead mother and dresses himself up like her,
adopting her personality.

ABC’s OF DEATH 2 is the follow-up to the most ambitious anthology film ever conceived with productions spanning from Nigeria
to UK to Brazil and everywhere in between. The film is comprised of twenty-six individual chapters, each helmed by a different
director, and each centered on a word beginning with each letter of the alphabet.
There have been many spins on A Christmas Carol – but in movie terms - this is the best. Ebeneezer
Scrooge is transformed from cold-hearted businessman into yuppie TV exec Frank Cross (Bill Murray) and made almost likeable despite his obnoxious behavior. SCROOGED is so good that we
don’t even mind the fact that it finishes up with a sing-along song. MVP, apart from Murray, goes
to Carol Kane’s Ghost of Christmas Present, who has the delightful habit of hitting her charge with
a toaster when necessary. And even when not. Beer partner is: Seventh Son Brewing.

Florian Habricht’s witty, innovative documentary follows the legendary titular band (perhaps the smartest and most charismatic
in all of BritPop) as they prepare to say farewell after 25 years of performances. Though culminating with the farewell concert
the band played to thousands of adoring fans in their hometown of Sheffield, England, PULP: A FILM ABOUT LIFE, DEATH AND

than any music film of recent memory.

LAST DAYS IN VIETNAM
During the chaotic final days of the Vietnam War, the North
Vietnamese Army closes in on Saigon as South Vietnamese
resistance crumbles. The United States has only a
skeleton crew of diplomats and military operatives still
in the country. As Communist victory becomes inevitable
and the U.S. readies to withdraw, some Americans begin
to consider the certain imprisonment and possible death
of their South Vietnamese allies, co-workers, and friends.
Meanwhile, the prospect of an official evacuation of South
Vietnamese becomes terminally delayed by Congressional
gridlock and the inexplicably optimistic U.S. Ambassador.
With the clock ticking and the city under fire, a number
of heroic Americans take matters into their own hands,
engaging in unsanctioned and often makeshift operations
in a desperate effort to save as many South Vietnamese
lives as possible.

EXPEDITION TO THE
END
OF THE WORLD
A real adventure film – for the 21st century. On a threemast schooner packed with artists, scientists and
ambitions worthy of Noah or Columbus, we set off for
the end of the world: the rapidly melting massifs of
North-East Greenland. An epic journey where the brave
sailors on board encounter polar bear nightmares,
Stone Age playgrounds and entirely new species. But in
their encounter with new, unknown parts of the world,
the crew of scientist and artists also confronted the
existential questions of life. Curiosity, grand pathos and
a liberating dose of humour come together in a superbly
orchestrated film where one iconic image after the
other seduces us far beyond the historical footnote that
is humanity. A film conceived and brought to life on a
grand scale - a long forgotten childhood dream lived
out by grown artists and scientists.

MYSTERY OF CREATION
One of the most iconic and enduring human structures

remains unfinished. SAGRADA celebrates Gaudi’s vision

designers and architects as they strive to complete
the colossal project while delving into the mysterious

78 PROJECT MOVIE
Based on the acclaimed web series, THE 78 PROJECT is a journey across America to record today’s musical artists as they
perform the early American songs that inspired a century of popular music -- exactly as they were originally recorded,
instantaneously, on one-of-a-kind 78rpm lacquer discs. Inspired by Alan Lomax and his quest to capture music where it
lived throughout the early 20th Century, the film celebrates the artistry and craft that spontaneously captured America’s
most authentic musical forms.

THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS 1993
THE BABADOOK
One of the most visually stunning films ever made, NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS tell the story of Jack Skellington, king of
Halloweentown, who discovers Christmas Town, but doesn’t quite understand the concept.
Six years after the violent death of her husband, Amelia is at a loss. She struggles to discipline her ‘out of control’ 6-year-old,
Samuel, a son she finds impossible to love. Samuel’s dreams are plagued by a sinister monster he believes is coming to kill
them both. When a disturbing storybook called ‘The Babadook’ turns up at their house, Samuel is convinced that the Babadook
is the creature he’s been dreaming about. His hallucinations spiral out of control and as he becomes more unpredictable and
violent, Amelia is genuinely frightened by her son’s behaviour. But when Amelia begins to see glimpses of a sinister presence all
around her, it slowly dawns on her that the thing Samuel has been warning her about may be real.

never before seen art to the Gateway Film Center just in time for the holiday season.
THE VATICAN MUSEUMS 3D is a mega-production by a team of 40 professionals who traveled hundreds of miles in the cultural
setting of the Vatican Museums while filming some of the most rare and precious works of art in the world, spanning all
civilizations and epochs. Thanks to a combination of the cutting-edge 3D techniques used for cinema by James Cameron and
Tim Burton, audiences can now fully immerse themselves in the timeless masterpieces of art history. Admire the paintings of
Caravaggio, touch Laocoön and the Belvedere Torso, and feel swathed by the figures in the Sistine Chapel.

PREMIERES/DEC 12
BEER TASTINGS/TIMELESS FILMS/GATEWAY UP LATE
There have been many spins on A Christmas Carol – but in movie
terms - this is the best. Ebeneezer Scrooge is transformed from
cold-hearted businessman into yuppie TV exec Frank Cross
(Bill Murray) and made almost likeable despite his obnoxious
behavior. SCROOGED is so good that we don’t even mind the
fact that it finishes up with a sing-along song. MVP, apart from
Murray, goes to Carol Kane’s Ghost of Christmas Present, who
has the delightful habit of hitting her charge with a toaster when
necessary. And even when not.
