Studying at the College
can open the door to
hundreds of jobs or
Higher Education courses
– it all depends on what
you’d like to do! If you’re
not sure, think about the
subjects you are good at
and what interests you.
You’ll now be expected to
stay in learning until the
end of the academic year
in which you turn 18. But,
there are lots of options
available. Our student
advisers can help you find
the right one for you.
There are courses
on everything from
plumbing to catering,
which are designed to
lead directly to a specific
job, provide a step to
university or further
study, or give you a broad
range of skills.
To help you choose what
course is right for you, see
pages 22-66, come to an
Open Day or speak to a
student adviser.
No matter what your level
of study there are courses
for you. In each course
area you can choose
from courses at different
levels, from basic to more
advanced. Your GCSE
grades (or your predicted
grades) will help you
choose which is right for
you. No qualifications?
No problem. The College
also has courses for you.
See pages 18-21 for more
information.
Studying does come with
some costs, such as travel
and equipment, but there
are various schemes that
could help you with these
costs. See pages 16-17 for
more information.
The easiest and quickest
way to apply to study at
the College is online at
www.eastberks.ac.uk/apply.
Alternatively, you can fill
in the form at the back
of this prospectus and

you will be offered a place
on a course. This place
may depend on your
exam results. You will then
receive a letter confirming
the offer, or what your
next step should be.
You will be invited to
attend a Welcome Day in
the summer. This will give
you the chance to enrol,
meet other students on
your course, meet your
tutors and take part in
some fun activities. You
will also receive a starter

At induction you’ll be
given your timetable
and other essential
information.
Welcome to East Berkshire
College! During your first
week there will be lots of
activities to help you settle
in and make friends.
CELEBRATING SUCCESS
Mural masterpiece
Championing young talent
The daily commute at Langley Train Station was immortalised in
paint by 13 talented art and design students from our Windsor
College as part of a public art project for First Great Western. The
students created a stunning 48ft x 5ft mural for the footbridge
at Langley Train Station. Officially unveiled in December, the
dynamic artwork beautifully depicts station life.
Gigneys restaurant in Windsor has been selected as a regional
finalist (South West, Thames Valley and Solent) in the prestigious
National Apprenticeship Awards 2015. The company, which
works in partnership with the College and currently employs
nine apprentices, was shortlisted for the SME newcomer of the
year award due to its exceptional commitment to developing
young talent.
An innovative environment
An Oscar-winning performance
An array of technology, from 3D printers to CNC milling
machines, was in action at the launch of our new state-of-the-art
IT and engineering facilities at Langley College in November.
Designed to inspire the next generation of inventors, designers,
computer scientists and engineers, the facilities were unveiled
by the Mayor of Slough and include a new Innovation Centre (ie.
the Genovation Centre), IT labs, computer-aided design studio
and engineering workshops.
Our students were given an insight into the world of film-making
and advice on starting a business venture, when former student
and Oscar-winning film producer Gareth Ellis-Unwin visited
Langley College in December. Gareth, who studied A Levels at
Windsor College in the late 1980s, returned to talk to students
about running their own business as well as his illustrious career;
a career that has included producing the 2010 film The King’s
Speech for which he won an Oscar for Best Film.
F
rom winning prestigious competitions to raising record amounts for charity, our
students have showcased their skills locally and nationally. We are extremely
proud of their achievements. Here are just a few success stories from the past year.
A global celebration
Foodgloriousfood
Moved by the plight of the people of Nepal, travel
and tourism students held a World Celebration
Day to celebrate cultures from across the globe
and, most importantly, raise an amazing £883
for Nepal. The fundraising event saw students
and staff at Langley College enjoy music, dance
and homemade food from around the world.
Highlights included music from the band Awaaz, a
raffle, a message wall, stalls and plenty of dancing!
Our Zest restaurant held a special St George’s Day
theme night to celebrate quintessential English
cuisine in April. From shepherd’s pie to Eton mess,
the St George’s Day event saw our talented catering
students create a delicious range of dishes inspired
by classic English food for diners.
Show-stoppingskills
From the Snow Queen to villainess Cruella de
Vil, Langley College was awash with larger than
life characters as part of our annual hairdressing
catwalk show. The Queen of Hearts, Lady Gaga
and Aphrodite were the inspiration for just some
of the wonderful and wacky creations making an
appearance this year. Over 240 students from
levels one to three took part in the show, with
prizes awarded in each category.
A moving tribute
Strictly careers
Performing arts students had local residents
dancing in Peascod Street in September for the
launch of a new careers advice service to help
16-24 year olds into employment, education and
training in the Royal Borough. To mark the launch
of the Elevate Me service in Windsor, the students
entertained shoppers with live musical numbers
from hit West End shows and some energetic
dance routines.
In November, Public Services students took part in
a special Remembrance Day ceremony in Langley
Memorial Park to mark the centenary of the end of
the First World War. The students held a two-minute
silence, gave two moving speeches and laid a wreath
of poppies to pay tribute to the brave individuals
who lost their lives during the war – and indeed all
those who have lost their lives in conflicts around
the world.
Artisticflair
Outstanding achievers
Recipeforsuccess
There were cakes galore at Windsor College in
September, when over 40 students on the Personal
Options course took part in Macmillan Cancer
Support’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning. The
students raised over £189 for the charity by selling
a variety of cakes, hot drinks and raffle tickets.
Top achievers were honoured by global
entrepreneur Fraser Doherty MBE at the College’s
annual Stand Out Awards Ceremony in June.
The awards acknowledged the outstanding
achievements of over 140 students, across both
our Langley and Windsor colleges. This year’s Team
of the Year Award went to students and staff from
our Construction Department for their outstanding
contribution in helping to fit out their brand new
learning facilities.
Fabulous paper dresses, sustainable furniture
designs and thought-provoking photography
were part of an exciting art and design exhibition
showcasing the work of talented students at
Windsor College in June. The successful end of
year show featured an impressive array of artwork
in various media and styles, from 3D design and
textiles to animation and painting.
LANGLEY COLLEGE
O
ur Langley College has recently undergone an exciting £30m makeover to provide
you with a state-of-the-art learning environment. All three phases of this improvement
project have now been completed and include a brand new Hospitality & Catering Academy,
Learning Centre, a multi-purpose Sports Centre, a simulated hospital environment for
Health & Social Care and commercial hair and beauty salons.
The improvements also include a new Genovation Centre,
which provides a learning space for creative thinking,
research and project development. We also opened a new
£5.1m STEM Project and Research Centre in September
2015. Focusing on engineering and construction skills,
this new centre aims to address a skills shortage identified
in the UK in science, technology, engineering and maths
(STEM) subjects.

facilities and equipment to prepare you for your chosen
career. Our vocational areas work in partnership with leading
employers, so you can learn from the best in the business.

IT’S ALL ABOUT YOU
C
oming to East Berkshire College gives you the
opportunity to do more than just study for a
qualification. We also want to help you think
about, and prepare for, what comes next. This is
why we offer plenty of additional opportunities and
support outside of study to offer you more than just
an education.
From work experience to careers advice and job clubs,
we have lots going on outside the classroom to help you
develop the skills you need for work and life, meet new
friends and make the most of your time here.
Your Study Programme
At the College, your study programme will offer you
fantastic opportunities to grow and succeed. It will include
independent learning, work experience, tutorials and advice.
This programme includes the following elements:
Work experience and internships
We work closely with local employers and an organisation
called Learning to Work to provide students with structured
work experience programmes and internships, which will enable
you to gain a valuable insight into real work environments.
For example, previous students have undertaken successful
placements at The Hilton Hotel, Interserve, construction
company Arzum and Speedboard Assembly.
Independent Learning
We will give you the confidence and motivation to learn
independently. Developing this vital skill is important for
progression into employment and Higher Education. We
have, therefore, invested heavily in the latest mobile
technology, independent learning zones and the learning
centres at our Langley and Windsor colleges.
Maths and English
Do you need to improve your maths and English skills? Our
dedicated Maths & English Centre provides outstanding
tuition in GCSEs and functional skills with timetabled
sessions designed to complement your main course. If you
have a grade D or E in maths or English, you will have the
opportunity to improve your GCSE grade as part of your
study programme. If you do not currently have a maths and/
or English qualification at GCSE grade E or above, then you
will first be able to undertake a functional skills qualification in
these subjects as part of your study programme.
Volunteering
Volunteering in the community is a fantastic way to
complement your studies and enhance your CV or UCAS
application. It is also a rewarding way to meet new
people and develop a range of essential skills. We work in
partnership with local voluntary organisations to provide
placements for students. You can be as flexible as you like
and do it around exams, work and your social life. The
opportunities are almost endless – from animals to sport,
music to the environment.
Innovation and entrepreneurship
We have an exciting Genovation programme, which offers
you the chance to work collaboratively across curriculum
areas to develop new business ideas and inventions. Guided
by the College’s Genovation Architect, you will be able to
work with local employers, industry experts and some of the
latest technology (e.g. 3D printers, laser cutters and specialist
software) to bring your ideas to life. The project will enable
you to develop your entrepreneurial skills and some students
will even have the chance to pitch their ideas to a panel of
business leaders for the opportunity to secure an interest-free
start-up loan to make their business concept a reality. Careers Fair
Each year we hold a Careers Fair to help you gain more
information about the options available to you after college
and help you understand the requirements of different
industries. Over 30 employers and organisations exhibit
at the event, providing students with details on a range of
careers from advertising to crime fighting.
Careers and progression
Advice and guidance
Our professionally qualified student advisers are always on

university, continuing at college, starting training or finding
a job. They can also help you access lots of information and
materials to ensure you get all the details and guidance you
need. Whatever your age, goals or experience, our advisers
will be happy to help.

one-to-one support to help you successfully progress on to
university and higher education courses. From guest speakers
from universities to help filling out UCAS application forms,
our advisers can help get you to where you want to be.

Through the National Careers Service, we offer a range of
valuable advice, guidance and job search activities at our
colleges. We can deliver a full career review and planning

not. Designed to help individuals develop the skills needed

C
oncerned about the cost of studying? Many of you will find your course is free or,
in some circumstances, you may be able to study at a reduced rate. If you have any
questions, call 01753 793368 or email student.finance@eastberks.ac.uk for more
information. For those not eligible, however, our courses are all competitively priced and
offer good value for money.
Free College Meals
Fees
16-18 year olds
Normally full-time and part-time courses are free (except for
the cost of personal materials) if you are aged under 19 and
have lived in the UK or European Economic Area for at least
three years.
Some courses require you to have materials such as special
books, protective clothing, equipment or, in some cases,
registration with professional bodies. To find out if there are
any material costs for your course and any financial help that
may be available to you, call us or ask at your interview.
Aged 19 or over
Even if you are aged 19 or over, you may be entitled to
receive some courses at a reduced rate, or with no fees
(except for material costs), if you are studying at particular
levels or are in receipt of certain benefits. To find out more
about reduced fees for adults, please contact our Admissions
team on 01753 793288.
If you are entitled to reduced or free course fees, you may
be required to provide evidence of eligibility at the time of
enrolment, such as a letter from Jobcentre Plus. Alternatively,
you may be eligible for a government loan (see below).
Financial support
There are a number of support schemes to help students
from low income households with the costs of becoming a
full-time student. The Government is continuing to review
the way students receive financial support in colleges. The
following schemes have been available in 2014-15 but may
be subject to change. Applicants for full-time courses will
be informed of financial support opportunities during the
application process.
16-18 bursaries
If you are aged 16-18 you may be eligible for a discretionary
bursary. This is based on your household income and paid
monthly to help with transport costs and course materials.
Guaranteed bursaries of £1200 per annum are available to
young people in or leaving care, or in receipt of specific
benefits.
If you are aged 16-18 on 31 August 2016 and you or your
parent/guardian is in receipt of specific benefits you will be
eligible to apply for free college meals. This is also available
to students aged 19-25 who have an Education Health and
Care Plan or a Learning Difficulty Assessment. Please contact
Student Finance for further eligibility details.
Childcare
If you’re aged 16-19 and need help with childcare costs, call
the Department for Education & Skills’ Care to Learn team
on 0800 121 8989 or go to www.direct.gov.uk/caretolearn.
Aged 20 or over? See below.
Discretionary Learner Support Fund
This College scheme provides financial help for students
aged 19 and over who are on a low income. You may be
able to access funding for travel costs, childcare, books and
essential course materials.
Travel schemes
For those under 19, the College offers fantastic travel
schemes in conjunction with transport providers to help you
save money on your travel costs. We offer a part-subsidised
bus pass scheme with First Buses to save eligible students at
least a third on bus travel and a reduced fare rail card with
First Great Western to save eligible students up to 50% on
fares. The bus pass entitles you to child fares on any First
Bus routes in Berkshire and the Thames Valley, including
the Green Line London coach service. While, the train pass
entitles you to child fares on First Great Western train lines
between Hanwell and Reading, including Slough, Windsor,
Maidenhead, Marlow and Southall. Each pass costs just £25
per term (or less for those from low income households who
qualify for a further discount).
For more details and to register your interest, visit
www.eastberks.ac.uk/travel or call 01753 793368.
Fee Support Scheme
If you are not eligible for reduced course fees, you could still
get help with a percentage of your fees. The College has its
own fund for those from low income households that can
offer you, subject to eligibility, a contribution towards your
tuition and exam fees, with the remainder payable by you.
You can then pay the remainder in one go or in instalments.

your basic skills, such as maths, ICT or reading and writing,
before you move on to more advanced study, we have

NVQs (National Vocational Qualifications)
NVQs are work-related qualifications concentrating on
practical skills for industry. You can train in your chosen
career and get a recognised qualification in subjects like
construction, exercise and fitness or hairdressing. At 16, there
are three levels, so entry requirements vary according to the
level you choose:
Level 1 – Foundation
Foundation skills in occupations.
Level 2 – Intermediate
We also offer a range of one-year intensive GCSE pathway
programmes, which are designed to help you re-take and
improve your results in order to move on to study A Levels or
a Level 3 vocational course. See page 26.
From summer 2017, a new grading system for GCSE exam
results is being introduced nationally. Eventually, all GCSE
exams will be graded from 1 to 9 rather than the current A*
to G, with 9 the highest grade. Grade 4 will be equivalent to
grade C on the previous system.
BTEC qualifications
BTECs and similar vocational qualifications each focus on a
particular type of work. They prepare you for employment or
Higher Education. Entry grades vary according to the level of
course – see below.
Diploma Level 1
One-year course, equivalent to gaining four GCSEs at grade D.
Diploma Level 2
Craft level, equivalent to GCSEs at grade C or above.
One-year course, approximately equivalent to gaining four or
five GCSEs at grade C or above.
Level 3 – Advanced
Diploma Level 3
Technician level, equivalent to two A Levels.
You are assessed at College, work or both. Once you’ve
finished you can either go on to the next level or get a job
in your chosen career. NVQs can also be gained through an
apprenticeship scheme. See page 22.
A Levels
A Levels are academic qualifications that last two years. If you
get five or more GCSEs at grade C or above you can apply
for this programme. You will study three or four subjects at A
Level. These qualifications are no longer divided into AS and
A2 levels. Instead, you will be assessed via external exams
at the end of the two-year course. However, college mock
exams take place at the end of the first year and the results of
these will provide predicted grades for UCAS applications.
These qualifications are the traditional route to university and
are usually a combination of classwork, homework, exams
and some coursework.
GCSEs and Functional Skills
When you join us you may already have taken GCSEs and
gained a grade C or above in maths and English. If you
haven’t, you will need to resit these GCSEs, or prepare for
doing so by taking a Functional Skills course first. English and
maths (Functional Skills and GCSEs) are free to all students.
We have a team of specialist teachers who will support you to
pass these subjects.
Taken over two years, the Diploma is equivalent to two
A Levels, and the Extended Diploma to three A Levels.
You are mostly assessed through assignments and a portfolio
of work as well as teamwork. You can usually progress to the
next level either at college or university if you gain Merit or
Distinction grades.
Tech Level, Tech Baccalaureate &
Applied Generals
These are new Level 3 qualifications which are being
introduced in stages. Like A Levels, any of these routes will
prepare you for further study at a higher level, university or
employment. Tech Levels will count towards a new Technical
Baccalaureate, which acknowledges the highest level of
technical training students aged 16-19 can achieve. For more
details, see our website.

What is the next step?
Anyone over the age of 16 can apply to do an

You should also be employed or actively looking for relevant

Not yet ready for an apprenticeship?
Try a traineeship
If you have little work experience or qualifications, then a
traineeship could help you get ready for an apprenticeship
or job in a variety of different sectors. Traineeships last up
to a maximum of six months and will provide you with the
essential work preparation training, work experience and
employability skills you need to progress.
A traineeship includes:

the opportunity to improve your English and maths skills
Who can do a traineeship?
Traineeships are available for young people aged 16-24 (or
up to 25 if you have a Learning Difficulty Assessment), who
are qualified below Level 3 and not working more than 16
hours per week. Traineeships are an ideal opportunity if you
are motivated to get a job but lack the skills and experience
that employers are looking for.
What are the benefits of a traineeship?
Just like apprenticeships, you can choose from traineeships
in a wide range of subject areas, which could lead on to
an apprenticeship or full-time employment. The courses
can also be tailored to your individual needs to help you
become ‘work ready’. The traineeship will help you develop
employability skills, improve your English and maths, gain
work experience and obtain an employer reference for
your CV.

I’ve always loved cooking, but never
thought of it as a career until I got
my apprenticeship. I didn’t enjoy
school, but I really enjoy learning at
college because it is more practical.
My apprenticeship has turned my
life around and given me a career
path. Not many people can say they
have cooked for The Queen, Bear
Grylls and Boris Johnson!

An apprenticeship really is the best

I’ll also have the experience to go
with it.
