The Appalachian State Series
Wofford and Appalachian State have played 27 times, with the Mountaineers holding a 17-10 lead
in the series. Wofford won the first game in 1960. As conference members, the Mountaineers hold
a 14-3 lead in the series that began in 1997. Last season Appalachian State won 43-13 in Boone.
In Gibbs Stadium, Appalachian State leads 5-2, however in all games in Spartanburg the Terriers
lead 8-5. The Mountaineers have won six of the last seven meetings and have scored 40 or more
points in four of their last six wins.
Last time against the Mountaineers
The Terriers were defeated 43-13 on November 13 by Appalachian State at Kidd Brewer Stadium.
Four lost fumbles put a damper on the hopes of the Terriers and the Mountaineers won their
sixth-straight Southern Conference title. The Terriers were led by Brian Kass with 42 rushing yards
and 4-of-11 passing with one touchdown. Appalachian State was led by Devon Moore with 115
rushing yards and three touchdowns. The Terriers running game was shut down as Wofford had
only 189 on the ground and 275 total yards, most of which were in the second half. Appalachian
State had 360 yards, 168 of which were rushing. Wofford had the time of possession advantage.
Wofford was 7-of-16 on third downs. Appalachian State was 7-of-13 on third down.
Appalachian State’s LAST GAME
Appalachian State University’s defense not only limited Chattanooga’s high-powered offense to
just 12 points but also provided all of Appalachian’s scoring in a heart-stopping 14-12 win over
the 13th-ranked Mocs on Saturday afternoon at jam-packed Kidd Brewer Stadium. With Chattanooga threatening to stretch a 6-0 lead to a two-score advantage on the final play of the third
quarter, Appalachian’s Rodger Walker scooped up an errant snap on a UTC field-goal attempt and
returned the fumble 73 yards for a touchdown that gave ASU an improbable 7-6 lead going into
the final period. Just 1:22 later, linebacker Jeremy Kimbrough intercepted a pass by Chattanooga’s
B.J. Coleman and rumbled 46 yards for what proved to be the winning points. Offensively, the
Mountaineers squandered a number of opportunities to put points on the board throughout the
afternoon. However, three turnovers and a missed field goal stymied ASU, which did not score
an offensive touchdown for the first time since a 24-0 loss at LSU in 2005. Despite throwing two
interceptions, DeAndre Presley totaled 195 yards of offense (143 passing, 52 rushing) to lead
Appalachian offensively. Travaris Cadet led all rushers with 63 yards and Brian Quick caught five
passes for 65 yards.
Head Coach Mike Ayers
Wofford head coach Mike Ayers (Georgetown, Ky. ‘74), the winningest coach in school history, is
in his 24th season at the Terrier helm with a record of 156-108-1. Ayers is in his 27th year as a
collegiate head coach and has a record of 167-129-2 that includes a three-year stint as the head

Year honors from the league coaches in 2000, 2003 and 2007 and by the media in 2000, ‘02, ‘03 and

the Year and also earned the 2002 Division I-AA National Coach of the Year award from the College
Sporting News in addition to being the runner-up for the Robinson Award.

On September 24, Wofford had three backs go over 100 yards as the Terriers opened the SoCon
campaign with a 38-23 win over Samford at Gibbs Stadium. Up one point at the half, Wofford
scored three touchdowns in the second half to pull away from the Bulldogs. Wofford was led
by Donovan Johnson with 173 rushing yards, Eric Breitenstein with 126 rushing yards and three
touchdowns, and Mitch Allen with 110 yards rushing and 69 yards passing. Eric Eberhardt had

Defensive Improvement
Against Furman on October 2, Eric Breitenstein ran for 230 yards and four touchdowns. The 230 yards
were the eighth most in a single game and were the most by a Wofford player since Lamond Smith
had 256 yards in 1994. Breitenstein was the first player to have over 200 yards in the NCAA Division
I era at Wofford. At Samford on November 6, he added a 227 yard game which is the ninth-most in
school history in a single game, giving him two of the top ten single-game rushing totals in school
history. Nationally last season, they ranked as the 10th and 11th highest single game totals.

The return of mike niam
Linebacker Mike Niam tore his ACL at Wisconsin in 2009 after leading the team in tackles the first
two games of the season. He recovered quickly and participated in spring practice in 2010. During
fall practice, he underwent surgury for a torn meniscus and it was discovered the ACL was torn
again. He had it repaired again and just seven weeks later returned to the field. Without missing a
beat, he has led the team in tackles in six of his eight starts last season and added an interception.
He finished the season tied for the team lead in tackles with 65.
fourth down? go for it!
In 2009, Wofford tied for the lead in the nation with 35 fourth down attempts along with Georgetown. VMI tried it 33 times and Colgate 31 times. The Terriers had a success rate of 37.14%, which
was 87th in the nation. Furman (9-11) was first with an 81.2% rate. In 2010, Wofford had only 25
fourth down attempts with 17 conversions. The 68.0% conversion rate was sixth in the nation.
poll position
In 2009, Wofford began the season tenth in both polls, but dropped each week. On September
28, the Terriers fell out of the rankings for the first time since November 3, 2006, the final poll of
the season. After receiving votes in the polls for the first four weeks of the 2010 season, Wofford
returned to the national rankings on October 4 with a #21 spot in The Sports Network/Fathead.

school mark with 13 field goals in a season. In addition, his 81.2% field goal percentage was third
in a single season (13 of 16).
The big play is back
In 2008, the big play (20+ rushing and receiving; 30+ return) was a staple of the Wofford offense,
with 74 total big plays, compared to only 47 in 2009. In 2010, Wofford had 67 big plays during the
season after six in the NCAA Playoff game against Georgia Southern. In the 2011 opener at PC, the
Terriers had eight big plays and added five at Clemson and six against Samford for 19 so far.
Going Overtime
The overtime game on September 27, 2008 at Georgia Southern was only the fourth overtime
game in school history. The Terriers lost the first two overtime games. On October 19, 2002,
Wofford defeated Western Carolina 31-24. With the 38-37 win at Georgia Southern, Wofford is
now 2-2 all-time in overtime games.
Bersin makes the catch
Even though the pass is not the first option in the Terriers triple option attack, senior Brenton Bersin
is a go-to receiver. He had 32 catches last season for 703 yards and nine touchdowns. The 703 yards
were the third most in a single season at Wofford, while the nine touchdowns tied for the record of
nine with Jerry Richardson. Twice last season he caught six passes in a game and he had 146 yards
against Chattanooga, the fourth highest single game total in school history.
Winning seasons
Wofford’s 9-3 record in 2008 gave the Terriers a winning season for the seventh straight season
year. Over the past twenty-three seasons under Coach Ayers, Wofford has recorded 16 winning
seasons. With a 3-8 mark in 2009, the streak ended at seven seasons. The Terriers were 10-3 in

Terriervision
Wofford College and Capturion Network completed installation of a new LED video board at Gibbs
Stadium in 2010. The new video board took the place of the original scoreboard in the north
endzone. The video board is a gift from Jimmy and Marsha Gibbs. The Gibbs family has a long
friendship with Wofford College spanning two generations. They provided also the lead gift for
the stadium’s construction in 1996.
Overall, the LED board is 57 feet wide and 22 feet tall. The overall size of the entire unit, including
sound system and advertising panels, is 57 feet by 30 feet tall. The football display system uses
Capturion’s newest P22 Discrete LED technology using 22mm full color LED with a 784x308 pixel
matrix. The technology and its control system allows for complete flexibility in programming,
operating as single giant display or divided into multiple zones (windows) to show a wide variety
of statistics, information, graphics, animation, and live and recorded video.
