PORTOFINO NEWSLETTER- SHORES MARCH 2014 P O R T O F I N O S H O R E S N E W S L E T T E R – M A RC H 2 0 1 4 DESK OF ALEX WATSON / Property Manager Welcome back to our northern owners who are here for a few months, enjoying the beautiful weather and making their friends and family back home jealous! Winter is upon us but unlike the rest of the country, it has been beautiful. It's great seeing so many residents out and about and enjoying our amenities. Let's keep our fingers crossed that these mild temperatures stay with us until spring! Special points of interest: COMMUNITY PRESERVATION IS IN FULL SWING THE BATS ARE BACK RESIDENCE MAINTENANCE MAILBOX MAYHEM OUR FURRY FRIEND GARDENING SWIMMING LESSONS PHOTOS DRESSING A DOLL TOILETRY DONATIONS RECIPE TO COOK IN MEMORY OF NICHOLAS ECONOMOS Inside this issue: BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR FOLLOW THE RULES DESK OF ALEX WATSON 1 CASTING CALL 5 CLUBHOUSE COMMITTEE NEWS CLUBHOUSE COMMITTEE 12 WEEKLY EVENTS CLUBHOUSE COMMITTEE 6 EVENTS 13 AROUND TOWN 14 SECURITY AND NEIGHBORHOOD 17 WATCH ARCHITECTURAL CONTROL 20 BOARD (ACB) GENERAL INFORMATION 28 PORTOFINO SHORES NEWSLETTER-MARCH 2014 DESK OF ALEX WATSON / Property Manager COMMUNITY PRESERVATION IS IN FULL SWING We have been busy making improvements around the community. Some recent projects include replacing the guardhouse columns, painting the exterior of the clubhouse and guardhouse, upgrading the bocce ball court to a concrete/carpeted surface, and re-staining the pool deck. Plans are being made to resurface the tennis courts, upgrade the monuments at the front entrance and add some sun shades to the pool deck. Your comments/suggestions are always welcome. Please feel free to stop by the office and let us know what changes you would like to see! THE BATS ARE BACK I am saddened to say that there have been bat sightings again in our community. A few homes have had to 'evict' them recently, which means they have taken up residence in another homeowner's property. The cost associated with protecting your home from bats is minimal compared to the cost to evict them. The average cost to have your house sealed to protect against a bat infestation is around $400. The cost to evict bats from your home exceeds $1,000. Be proactive now and save yourself some money. The association office has a list of vendors who can assist you. SUGGESTIONS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME PLEASE FEEL FREE TO STOP BY THE OFFICE AND LET US KNOW WHAT CHANGES YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE! WE HAVE BEEN BUSY MAKING IMPROVEMENTS AROUND THE COMMUNITY "We're always there for you" 2 WE CARE FOR YOUR FLORIDA HOME WHILE YOU ARE AWAY PORTOFINO SHORES NEWSLETTER-MARCH 2014 PROPERTY WIDE DESK OF ALEX WATSON / Property Manager RESIDENCE MAINTENANCE Property wide inspections have begun! Our focus this year (other than the typical maintenance requirements) is on house painting and landscape replacement. As the landscaping matures, some shrubs begin to get 'stemmy' or overgrown to the point they cannot be trimmed. These items have exceeded their useful life and need to be replaced. In addition, there may be some trees that were planted by the developer that have not survived or were taken out because they were "ugly" or "messy". Each lot in the community followed a master landscape plan. Included in this plan was a county requirement for native canopy trees. Due to the size of the lots, each lot in Portofino is required to maintain three (3) native canopy trees or a total of 7.5 inches in diameter of native canopy trees. These trees cannot be removed unless they are diseased or dead. Because of this, a county permit is required to remove any trees. Lots that no longer have three native canopy trees or a TOTAL of 7.5 inches in trunk diameter in native canopy trees will be required to replace the missing trees. More information on what is considered a 'native canopy tree' is available at the association office or on the website at www.portofinoshore s.net. INSPECTIONS HAVE BEGUN! OUR FOCUS THIS YEAR (OTHER THAN THE TYPICAL MAINTENANCE REQUIREMENTS) IS ON HOUSE PAINTING AND LANDSCAPE REPLACEMENT DUE TO THE SIZE OF THE LOTS, EACH LOT IN PORTOFINO IS REQUIRED TO MAINTAIN THREE (3) NATIVE CANOPY TREES OR A TOTAL OF 7.5 INCHES IN DIAMETER OF NATIVE CANOPY TREES AIR CONDITIONER SERVICES REGULAR AIR CONDITIONING 3 SERVICE CAN HELP YOUR SYSTEM RUN AT MAXIMUM EFFICIENCY WHILE KEEPING YOUR HOME COMFORTABLE AND YOUR ENERGY BILLS DOWN PORTOFINO SHORES NEWSLETTER-MARCH 2014 DESK OF ALEX WATSON / Property Manager MAILBOX MAYHEM We are still experiencing some mailbox issues in the neighborhood. Please do your part to make our postal carrier’s job a bit easier. Do not park in the street near your mailbox or block the mailbox access with garbage cans. In addition, it is the homeowner’s responsibility to keep your mailbox clean. They thank you in advance for your consideration! OUR FURRY FRIENDS We understand that dogs are a member of most people's families. As much we all love them, each owner needs to take responsibility for his pet and respect the neighbors in the comm unit y. Please be sure to pick up after your pet, whether it is in your own yard or while out in the neighborhood. Always walk with a baggie. Waste management is a priority! In addition, dogs should always be on a leash and under control of an adult, shall not be chained in the yard unsupervised, and barking must be controlled. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, Peggy and I are in the office to assist you. Feel free to call or stop by at any time. Have a wonderful winter/spring! THE DONATIONS WILL BE DISTRIBUTED TO THE HOMELESS IN MEMORY OF NICHOLAS ECONOMOS Barbara Bishop of Portofino Shores would like to announce the passing of her loving father, Nicholas Economos. He was 94 years young and lived in Holiday Pines. Nick lived a full and interesting life. At the young age of 11 he was discovered by a talent scout swimming in a local pool in New Jersey and was selected to be a child model for RCA Corporation. He was featured on their national ad campaigns from 1930 to 1935. In his youth Nick trained as an aircraft mechanic and rose to plant manager for Brewster Aviation. Although building airplanes was his passion when demand diminished in the fifties, he became a home builder/developer. Adventure was no stranger to Nick. He was a private pilot and traveled to many destinations in his Cessna 310. After retiring he sold his plane and restored and lived on his solid teak 44 foot sailboat for eight years. At the age of 69 Nick designed and built his home in Holiday Pines and was best known in his later years for building Paraguayan Harps. Nick left his wife Maria Dolores, 2 children, 4 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. He was an inspiration to the whole family and we will dearly miss him. After that big dinner of corned beef, cabbage, carrots, potatoes , Irish soda bread & a pint (glass of beer) , you'll want just a little sweet. Unlike the French , the Irish are not known for beautiful sweet confections but they do a beautiful, simple, buttery treat called "short bread!" It's a lovely little melt in your mouth finish to a hearty dinner. Made with just 3 ingredients, what could be easier? Makes 2/ 8x8 pans, 45 min in a 350 oven 5 cups of flour 1 cup of sugar and 1 lb of butter (softened) Blend flour & sugar together, add butter. Mix until it will form a ball. Press into 2 pans, prick w/fork and bake Cut into small squares or diamonds while still warm sprinkle w/powdered sugar. Until next time, keep cooking! At a recent committee meeting, St. Lucie County Police Deputy Leroy Davis informed our members that, to date, Portofino Shores has the lowest crime rate in our area. We are very proud of this distinction and will work hard to ensure that it is maintained. But we need your help. to diminish any potential criminal activity. All Portofino Shores residents are urged by Deputy Davis and the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Department to remember the following: 1. Lock all vehicles that are parked outside. Also be aware of any car windows that may be broken and report it to security. A window with no reflection is a good indication that it is broken. 2. Take precautions To continue our status as one of St. Lucie County’s safest communities, ongoing vigilance is necessary 4. Be aware of any suspicious handling of your credit cards. 5. It is highly recommended to turn on your outside ‘coach’ lights to defray criminal activity. 6. CLOSE YOUR GARAGE DOOR for the night. 17 against identity theft.
