Jefferson Healthcare plans growth
Plan will change
the way services
are delivered
Jefferson Healthcare’s
CEO Mike Glenn has been
presenting information to
the public since May on the
possible expansion of healthcare services and facilities
to service groups around the
county. In his talks, Glenn
lays out the existing conditions of the medical facilities
and identifies current and future needs that are prompting
the hospital to seek expansion
of the current facilities.
“We want to educate the
community about our Emergency and Specialty Services
project and get their input”,
said Mike Glenn. “The community seems excited about
the project and appreciates the
opportunity to provide input.”
The hospital district’s 2013
strategic plan lists the campus
renewal plan as one of the
top five goals for Jefferson
Healthcare. “This is a major
project for Jefferson Healthcare, and we want to make
sure we get this right”, said
Glenn.
The needs of the community and patients are changing,
Glenn says, and so is the way
healthcare will be delivered in
the future.

That percentage is projected
to reach about 40 percent by
2025. With the average age of
the community rising, it means
more people will need orthopedic care, oncology services, cardiac care, emergency services,
fitness and wellness and health
prevention.
The campus renewal plan
proposes expanded spaces for
the emergency department,
orthopedic clinic, diagnostic
imaging, oncology services,
medical short stay, lab blood
draw, cardiology healthcare,
sleep medicine and central
registration. The goal is to
make these health services
more accessible and convenient for patients.
This service expansion
and facility improvement
project will modernize aging,
inefficient structures and
consolidate services in a new
state-of-the art building. The
project is estimated to be
about 50,000 square feet for a
new, three story building and
cost approximately $18 million. County taxpayers will
not be asked to pay for this
expansion with taxes. If the
approval is given, construction would begin in July of
2014 and end in December of
2015.
The community input re-
port along with an anticipated
USDA Rural Development
loan approval is slated to be
presented at the September
meeting of Jefferson Healthcare’s Board of Commissioners.
The Commissioners will
hear the reports and after
discussing the findings, will
make a decision on whether to
move forward with the project
or acknowledge the time isn’t
right for expansion.
There are two remaining
public forums in Quilcene
on Aug. 5 at the Community
Center and in Chimacum on
Aug. 28 at the Tri-Area Community Center.

It’s been a great few
months in Jefferson County!
With a spurt of far nicer
weather than we’re used to
through May and June, it
appears
summer
has come
to stay
and with
summer
comes festival season. We
had a great Rhody weekend
complete with a free cake
picnic, and we’re looking at
Victorian Festival, Wearable
Art Show and Brass Screw
Confederacy in the rear
view mirror.
May also saw the official launch of the Co-Lab
by Frank DePalma and
Heather Dudley-Nollette,
the culmination of two
plus years of planning
around an incredible new
idea of structured coworking and shared office
space. These two individuals deserve a lot of credit
for bringing this new
paradigm to fruition in our
community. Throughout
Port Townsend we have a
plethora of businesses that
have opened, expanded
or relocated in the last
few months, all of which
resulting in a mostlyfull Water Street in Port
Townsend, a welcome
improvement over some
previously vacant storefronts, as evidenced by
locals and tourists alike
enjoying weekend walks
through the historic commercial districts.
Some incredible strides
in education have been
made recently, both in our
school districts and higher
and vocational education.
We recently heard from our
PTHS FBLA team, who
saw a few of their members
sent to state to continue in
competition.
The Northwest Maritime Center’s new partnership with Crawford Nautical School will also bring
a number of people to the
community in the coming
years, and will take advantage of some of the stateof-the-art equipment and
systems that are available.
In keeping with nautical
news, we heard from Penelope Partridge about the
Felicity Ann Boat Project
undertaken by the School
of Wooden Boat Building
– another partnership with
local schools that gives
our students an opportunity to work outside the
classroom in a hands-on,
collaborative environment.

Port Ludlow Farmer’s
Market, being held weekly
in their new location at
the resort, in the grass
near the old Harbormaster
Restaurant just above the
marina. The market runs 1
to 5 p.m., with some different offerings than you’ll
find at the Port Townsend
or Chimacum Farmer’s
Markets. (Opened June 2
for the season!)
We held a roundtable
discussion last month in
the Tri-area to speak with
our members and community members to see how
the Chamber can better
address the needs of all
communities we serve. I
encourage all of you to
participate in these events
– we’re looking to host
these on a quarterly basis
going forward, as we had
some great feedback and
ideas from our initial discussions. Watch for future
events to be a part of.
We are also actively
soliciting young professionals throughout the
county to participate in
our mentorship program!
We had great response
from mentees and
mentors from our pilot
program that concluded
earlier this year, so if you
or someone you know is
looking for an established
business professional
to work closely with to
find new best practices
to make your business a
success, we may be able
to help! We have mentors
who have offered to work
with individuals across a
wide range of industries
and services, and we’re
excited to expand this
program going forward
into a permanent fixture
in Jefferson County to
support our young professionals and the businesses
they represent.

to help train
new generation
The Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce
Young Professionals Network is offering a free
mentorship program aimed at helping local young
professionals get a leg up in their career or chosen
profession.
We have local mentors with years of excellent
professional experience ready to dive in. If you are
looking to advance in your current profession or
start a new career, you could benefit from your own
personal mentor!
Here’s how it works: we will match you with a
mentor based on the information you provide (see
below). You and your mentor will work together
toward your goals over a period of 90 days. We’ll
keep in touch with your progress along the way
and meet with you at the end of 90 days to evaluate
success.

Lots going on at the Resort at Port Ludlow
Many of us know the
Resort at Port Ludlow as
the fancy hotel out there
in the county. But a recent
Familiarization Tour with
the Port Townsend Visitor
Information Center (VIC)
volunteers showed us that
the hotel has more to offer
than just rooms and ‘out
there’ isn’t as far as we
thought. Our first stop was
the Port Ludlow Pro-Shop
at the golf course where
we learned from Darrin,
Assistant Golf Professional,
that this scenic 18-hole,
par 72 course is one of the
premier courses in the country. There is no membership
necessary to golf or eat at
the Niblick’s Café, shop in
the Pro-shop, or even head
out to the course and practice area, which includes
a large putting green, two

place?” Living in Jefferson County makes firsthand knowledge about
places to stay scarce.

Across the street from
Fort Worden, tucked up off
the street, is the Big Red
Barn Getaway.
The barn stands behind
the main house blocked
from traffic but not from
a view of Admiralty Inlet.
Built in 1890, this cedar
barn has been refurbished
into a two room, nonallergen, romantic getaway
with two electric fireplaces,
kitchenette, and giant jetted
tub. Perfect for any season,
overstuffed chairs and
down alternative bedding
make it cozy and comfy
during colder months,
and double doors open
off of the bedroom onto
the garden and barbeque
for warmer times. Owners Carol and Todd want
to give the complete Port
Townsend experience by
providing towels for the
beach, cart for shopping at
the Farmers’ Market, and
a picnic basket for guests
who want to venture out
from the barn. “We want
guests to use every single
inch of it,” Carol told us.
She is very mindful of her
guests and open to their
comments and suggestions.
One volunteer said that this
was the third tour he had
taken to the Big Red Barn
over the years, and it keeps
getting better. Pets and
children are welcome.
