Writing an ARC grant
DEAKIN UNIVERSITY FACULTY OF SCIENCE, ENGINEERING AND BUILT ENVIRONMENT Research Development Workshop Series Workshop 1 2016 “Writing an ARC grant –some tips, thoughts” Thursday 19 May 2016 via videoconference POWERPOINT PRESENTATIONS FOLLOWING THE WORKSHOP Invited speakers for this workshop John Grundy, Pro Vice-Chancellor ICT Innovation & Translation and Professor of Software Engineering at Deakin University Dr Anne Brocklebank Proud Faculty Research Grants and Analysis Manager. Abstract: John Grundy discusses his experience of writing ARC grants in Australia over the past 6 years and more recently assessing ARC grants as a member of the ARC College of Experts over the last 2 years. Giving his personal viewpoint, the focus is on the big picture e.g. - do you have a good project /sufficiently strong track record/ are you targeting the right scheme? In addition to as detailed suggestions around project description, budget, project research environment. Anne Brocklebank Proud gives an overall picture of ARC progress for SEBE and an overview of the current Category 1 process at Deakin John Grundy –“Writing an ARC grant” Presentation Link Question and answer session-Link Anne Brocklebank Proud -“SEBE ARC progress” Presentation Link Chair: David Cahill. DeakinUniversity CRICOSProviderCode:00113B SEBE Research Development Workshop Series Workshop 1 2016 Question and answer session following presentations. Q1 – If the project has CI members from multiple organisations, what is your advice re: dividing the funding? • This is always a tricky one, good communication between team members is important and if possible some prior discussion so all are in agreement. Q2 – What if CI member/s are ECR’s? • If it is a strong application it may have a good chance of success. The ROPE will be taken into account here so if there are any impacts on your outputs eg: children /illness /contracts / senior admin roles, please articulate. Also make sure in the application that the role of all personnel is made clear and that the job allocation is feasible. Q3. – How developed should the project be when you apply? • This will depend to some extent on the discipline, if it is a totally new project then it must have a track record that shows expertise. Giving some preliminary data or related data is OK but beware that the project is not too advanced. Q4. – If collaborating with a company – is the size of the company an important factor? • Not really but it’s important to show that the company is committed to the collaboration. Big company projects are occasionally unconvincing if they appear to be only a consultancy rather than a research relationship. Q5. – What about overseas collaboration? • Team members overseas can be included and it is good to do so but the application must clearly state what they will do, where and when. Q6. –What about showing value for money – is cost a factor? • Showing value for money is important but if there is one factor that can bring down an application its price trimming. The end result must be feasible for cost. Q7. –So, for young staff – where is the start point? • • • • A strong track record is important but this is something of a catch 22 situation for young staff so initially join a strong team. Linkage projects have more chance of success but are still very competitive so even if you are a CI get a strong CI to work with you. DECRA applications need to show a really strong track record, check the CVs of previous winners to get some idea of what’s expected. Future Fellows are awarded at 3 academic levels. Level 1= academic level B and below: Level 2 = level C: Level 3 = academic level D and above. The success rate is higher at the lower level.
