Cinebook’s 12th catalogue. The 20 new
titles we will be offering you through June
2012 will bring our total to an amazing
212 titles from 41 different series!
This half of the year will be placed
firmly under the twin signs of science fiction and fantasy. For example, we’re
bringing you the third volume of Christin
and Mézières’ “Valerian,” setting the
pace for what will be, from now on, a
publishing rate of two volumes each year
for this legendary sci-fi saga. Leo’s
“Antares” continues with Volume Two for
P14
more outer space adventures. On the fantasy front, the sorcery-filled “Crusade”
comes to a blood-drenched conclusion,
and Runberg and Ocaña’s “Darwin’s
Diaries” delves deeper into the darkest
hours of the famous man of science.
Meanwhile, “Blake & Mortimer” give us a
bit of each: a true sci-fi extravaganza
from creator E.P. Jacobs himself, then a
quest steeped in Christian tradition written by comic superstar Jean Van Hamme.
This catalogue also sees the return
of beloved old friends like “Largo Winch,”
back from getting the Hollywood treat2

and star reporters “Spirou and Fantasio,”
engaged in a dangerous, scary—but
always hilarious—expedition.
And let’s not forget our younger
readers, with De Gieter’s Egyptian hero
“Papyrus” and Roba’s wonderfully
charming “Billy & Buddy.”
Finally, it’s time to introduce our
new series: “SPOOKS,” written by the
author of the critically acclaimed “Long
John Silver,” Xavier Dorison. A dash of
Western, a pinch of “The X-Files,” a smattering of demonology. Shake well and
enjoy… in a well-lit room!
ment (with Sharon Stone) with two books,
and Desberg and Marini’s swashbuckling
hero “The Scorpion,” the first volume of
which we have just reprinted.
The regulars are still here as well, of
course: Morris’s Lonesome Cowboy
“Lucky Luke” with three titles, two written by Goscinny and one by Bob de
Groot. And, as always, Van Hamme and
Vance’s “XIII” will come out every two
months.
For comic relief, we have the everready “Bluecoats” and their very unique
way of surviving the American Civil War,

Blake & Mortimer Vol. 12: Atlantis Mystery
The Bluecoats Vol. 5: Rumberley
• Edgar P. Jacobs
• Raoul Cauvin; illustrated by Willy Lambil
Blake and Mortimer set out to discover Atlantis…
but will have to save it in the end!
Left behind with the wounded, Blutch and Chesterfield must defend
their fellow Union soldiers against Southern troops… and civilians!
After an even bloodier battle than usual, the Union
Army is out of men. But so are the Confederates,
and General Alexander decides to retreat and come
back with reinforcements before the enemy can do
the same. To move faster, he leaves his wounded—
including Stark and Chesterfield—behind in the
nearby town of Rumberley, in the care of its inhabitants and Corporal Blutch. But Rumberley’s a
Rebel village…
Deep under Sao Miguel island, rumoured to
be the last emerging part of Atlantis,
Professor Mortimer has discovered samples
of a mysterious radioactive metal. Could it
be the Atlanteans’ legendary orichalcum?
When he and his friend Blake set out on an
expedition into the depths to find out, sabotage occurs in the form of their old opponent Olrik. And soon, all three will be
embroiled in a power struggle far bigger in
scope than they could have imagined.
“The slapstick comedy of errors is done
really well, the wordplay is clever and silly
at the same time. And add in those clever
touches and repeated motifs and it gets
better.” Richard Bruton, Forbidden Planet

XIII Vol. 11: Three Silver Watches
Darwin’s Diaries Vol. 2: Death of a Beast
• Jean Van Hamme; illustrated by William Vance
• Sylvain Runberg; illustrated by Eduardo Ocaña
The mystery of XIII’s birth and the tragedies
that led to it are revealed!
Death still hovers over Yorkshire, and it begins to strike closer
to Charles Darwin.
XIII has freed a country, exposed a traitor,
reunited with his wife… and found his father.
As he deals—somewhat against his will—with
the aftermath of the revolution in Costa
Verde, Sean Mullway recounts for him his
family’s history: Irish immigrants, remorseless Mafiosi, Mexican gold, and three silver
watches. New answers will also bring new
questions and a whole new set of potential
enemies just as old ones come back to the
fore.
With the beast killed by the soldiers, the
strike ends and things seem to return to normal. But there are still some unanswered
questions and lingering tensions, especially
towards the neo-druids who live in the
forest. The death of a young girl triggers a
wave of aggression and more deaths. Is
anyone controlling the ancient evil in the
forests? And why, exactly, is the principled,
family-minded Charles Darwin drowning his
nights in gin and loose women?
Cinebook is publishing “XIII” at the rate of
one new volume every two months from
May 2010 to July 2013.
“With occasionally visceral horror content,
this is a powerful, hugely entertaining
period-piece, evocatively illustrated,
smartly scripted and grippingly paced.”

Lucky Luke Vol. 33: The One-Armed Bandit
Largo Winch Vol. 9: The Price of Money
• Bob de Groot; illustrated by Morris
• Jean Van Hamme; illustrated by Philippe Francq
No catching bandits this time. Lucky Luke is escorting one—of
the mechanical kind.
On Wall Street, making money has a price—and sometimes
it’s high.
A man shoots himself in front of Largo, on live
TV. He was a guest on a financial talk show
who had lost his company because of a
W Group decision. Shocked by the knowledge
that he is indirectly responsible, Winch
becomes an object of hatred for the nation,
and his two best friends abandon him. When
suspicions arise that shady dealings led to
unnecessary restructurings, he launches an
investigation to identify the real culprits.
Brothers Adolph and Arthur Caille are
mechanical geniuses. They’ve just created
one of the first slot machines and have presented it to their local senator, a notorious
gambler. Much taken with the device, he
agrees to send them on a tour of American
cities to test the machine’s popularity. And,
to escort them on this dangerous journey, he
calls on his old friend Lucky Luke… So begins
the wacky tale of how the one-armed bandit
conquered the West!

Spirou & Fantasio Vol. 3: Running Scared
Crusade Vol. 4: The Fire Beaks
• Tome; illustrated by Janry
• Jean Dufaux; illustrated by Philippe Xavier
The cursed Crusade comes to an end beneath
the blood-soaked ruins of Jerusalem’s walls.
A brutal occupier, merciless rebels, the hostile Himalayans,
and a truckful of bizarre patients… Nothing to be scared of!
With the Master of Machines as their new
leader, the Crusaders are ready to assault
Jerusalem once more. The Sultan must now
choose between his love for a Christian princess and his faith. And Gauthier of Flanders,
to free his ally Osarias’s Jewish people, will
have to confront the last part of his mysterious past, a Jinni. As the final battle is joined,
truths will be revealed on the nature of gods
and demons and the ambitions of men.
Spirou and Fantasio are hired by a
doctor to escort some of his patients.
Their ailment? An apparently incurable
case of the hiccups. His solution: Send
them on the most insane adventure
ever and scare the hiccups out of
them! Since he offers to pay for their
expedition, the two fearless reporters
agree to take the patients with them
as they attempt to locate two explorers lost in 1938 near the Nepalese
border… in the middle of a war!
Jean Dufaux is an established author who has
created many series throughout his long career.
Among them: “Murena,” “Jessica Blandy,” and
“La Complainte des Landes Perdues.”

Papyrus Vol. 5: The Anger of the Great Sphinx
XIII Vol. 12: The Trial
• De Gieter
• Jean Van Hamme; illustrated by William Vance
The gods of ancient Egypt are angry, and it’s up to a brave
young man to appease them and reawaken the greatness of
the people of the Nile.
Time for XIII to help expose his worst enemy—the most
powerful man in the world.
In the middle of the night, Princess Theti
leaves the palace like a sleepwalker and
rides to the Great Sphinx. Papyrus follows to
protect her, but when he finds her, she is the
prisoner of the Sphinx, who is angry at the
royal line for breaking their covenant and
letting the sands cover the great statue. The
Sphinx wants her life as sacrifice. Opposed
by the evil Storm Man, Papyrus must journey
to the Sacred Island to beg the gods for
mercy.
Called back to the USA by the frantic
government, McLane and Jones discover
that General Carrington has kidnapped Wally
Sheridan, President of the United States!
Holed up in a secret base he’s turned into a
fortress, Carrington intends to put Sheridan
on trial on live TV and expose him as the
Number I of the conspiracy. To do that, he’s
going to need XIII’s help in bringing in his
main witness: the Mongoose!
“The combination of Van Hamme's intense

SPOOKS Vol. 1: The Fall of Babylon
Lucky Luke Vol. 34: The Daltons Always on the Run
• Xavier Dorison and Fabien Nury; illustrated by Christian Rossi
• René Goscinny; illustrated by Morris
When a situation becomes too weird, it’s time for the U.S.
Government to call upon Morton Chapel and his SPOOKS.
As if they didn’t escape often enough, now they’re getting pardoned…
A general amnesty puts the Daltons back on
the streets, something Lucky Luke isn’t
happy about. And, to make it worse, they
seem to have become model citizens. It’s all
an act, though, and it doesn’t take long for
the stupidest quartet in the West to be back
behind bars. Luke is already riding off into
the sunset… But he’s not counting on a riledup Apache tribe that attacks the penitentiary where the Daltons are locked up…
1895. Members of the East Coast elite have
died under mysterious circumstances. To
investigate this delicate problem, Richard
Clayton—against the wishes of the
President—calls upon a man named Morton
Chapel for his unorthodox methods and
peculiar associates. As they begin to uncover
strange, vanishing marks on people’s bodies,
unexplained changes in behaviour and hints
of widespread corruption, the team reforms
around the name Ulysses S. Grant himself
gave it years earlier: his SPecialists in the

Published in France in 1969 in the weekly comic

following The City of Shifting Waters. It is the beginning

one can expect from a pair of beginners.
The Land Without Stars was first published as a graphic
novel in 1972 by Dargaud, who went on publishing the
series for over 40 years. It quickly became very popular
in Europe, as it told stories that were outside the frame of

Largo Winch Vol. 10: The Law of the Dollar
Antares Vol. 2: Episode 2
• Jean Van Hamme; illustrated by Philippe Francq
• Leo
The almighty dollar will make people do anything, but there
are rules for everyone.
A brand new planet to explore—but people are people, and
some things never change.
Accused of murder and hated by an entire
nation, Largo is hiding in Canada and feeling
very much alone. But his friendships are
stronger than his circumstances, and soon he’s
able to counterattack against the various
factions that are trying to bring him down.
Greedy lawyers, crooked CEOs, murderous
accountants, all pitted against the orphan
turned billionaire… In the end, only the
smartest and strongest will prevail—for such is
the Law of the Dollar.
The Antares mission is underway. Kim, her
daughter and her companions are on board the
interstellar ship that carries the would-be colonists. Conditions are far from ideal, though.
The fanaticism and bigotry of a large number of
the passengers, all members of the project
leader’s sect, are putting everyone on edge. As
well, there are rumours of substandard equipment for the expedition. By the time they
reach Antares, Kim and her friends are already
disillusioned… and the worst is yet to come.
“Those tired or disappointed with recent
superhero stories might want to check out
Largo Winch. It's power fantasy adventure
of a different sort.”

The Scorpion Vol. 5: In the Name of the Father
XIII Vol. 13: Top Secret
• Stephen Desberg; illustrated by Enrico Marini
• Jean Van Hamme; illustrated by William Vance
Time for the Scorpion to find out what sin his mother really
committed.
Hunted by the government, a murderous organisation and a
beautiful double agent. Business as usual for XIII...
The lights of Rome have dimmed. When the
Scorpion and his friends get back to the Holy
See, it is a place of fear and death they find, a
city cowering under Trebaldi’s boot. Their only
chance to destroy the Pope’s power is to heed
Rochnan’s last words and look into the past of
the Scorpion’s mother. Dodging warrior-monks
and Inquisitors, they begin to unravel a story
that could yield some answers too horrible to
contemplate…

“Those who bemoan that there’s not been a
decent play on the old Three Musketeers
theme for over three decades: Sit down and
relax. We’re given “The Sopranos” of the eighteenth century, “Tomb Raider” with a twist,
and a nod and wink to The Da Vinci Code, or
rather, its source material The Holy Blood and
The Holy Grail as told during a confessional
scene from The Godfather.” Paul Birch,

It’s just a little
sedative, Valbosco… If
you behave, you’ll be able
to walk again in about
three hours.
Initially serialized in Spirou magazine in 1984,
“XIII” was created by Jean Van Hamme,
legendary author of such series as “Largo
Winch,” “Thorgal,” “Lady S.” and “Blake &
Mortimer”; and William Vance, illustrator of
the bestsellers “Howard Flynn,” “Bruce
Hawker,” “Bruno Brazil,” “Bob Morane” and
“Marshall Blueberry.”
I don’t have much
time, Valbosco. You’re
one of the few witnesses
to have known my mother
well, and the events that
led to her conviction
even better.
Th… The
Scorpion!
I will
only ask this
question
once.

The Mongoose is dead. So is Number I. But,
since he was the President of the United
States, XIII’s friends are all on the run again.
McLane, though, has been arrested, and he’s
being judged in secret by the heads of the
American intelligence community. Sentenced
to life in a secret prison, he has no illusions
that he’ll ever reach it. The ruthlessness of the
NSA Director proves him right—but he’s not the
only one who wants XIII dead.

hhh… I can’t
take another
step… Hhhh…
They’ve stopped
shooting.
Get up and run,
dammit! Or I’ll tear
off your arm. We
have to find some

The helicopter
can’t land in this

have dropped off
the killers.
That’ll give us
a slight chance.
Come on!

When an ancient Christian relic surfaces in Greece,
Blake and Mortimer face one of
their toughest challenges ever.
In Pennsylvania, Olrik escapes a federal prison
by helicopter after a bloody attack. With
Blake forced to cut short his holidays at the
news, a disappointed Mortimer turns his
attention to Greece, where an earthquake has
uncovered an ancient chapel. Before long,
people are trying to kill Mortimer over a
mysterious Roman silver coin. Could the longlost relic be one of the 30 denarii paid to
Judas for his betrayal of Jesus? And who
exactly covets it so much?
JUNE
Billy’s got a good life with Mum and Dad.
Plenty of play, a little homework, and a
smart, loving dog. Of course there’s the
occasional hitch: that nosy, bossy old maid
of a neighbour—and her Siamese cat—or the
cheeky beat cop Agent 22. But it’s never too
serious, and even Dad’s occasional embarrassing blunders can’t spoil things for long.
After all, as long as you have friends, everything will be all right in the end!
“The humor in these short stories runs the
gamut from gentle to slapstick to sophisticated
and generally has its basis in everyday concerns
that children can relate to.”

Born and raised in Belgium, Morris moved to
the United States in 1946 for six years. There,
he worked for MAD magazine and met René
Goscinny, with whom he collaborated from
1955 until Goscinny’s death in 1977. Goscinny
also created the “Iznogoud” series with illustrator Tabary, published in English by
Cinebook, and the hugely successful “Asterix”
series with illustrator Uderzo.
