Welcome to the 2013 Dakota 50/50 Sale, Futurity, and Maturity!
Since 2013 is our 10 year anniversary, it is very exciting to reflect on how this organization
has grown and prospered. It takes great commitment from members/breeders and contestants to make this happen. I am proud and happy to be a member of the Dakota 50/50.
As in the past, we have a great selection of colts from three major breeds, with a wide
variation of bloodlines. These foals have the potential to make good horses for their new
owners.
In the futurity we have a very nice bunch of two year olds returning to compete for the
prize money. In addition there are other awards supplied by our very generous sponsors.
The Maturity in its second year is still in the infant stages. Remember, that a four or five
year old horse that has been sold in a Dakota 50/50 sale is eligible to compete in 2013,
and entries will be taken until a week before the event.
The Mane Event will be held again this year. Come out to socialize and have fun! A lot of
work goes into making this an enjoyable time for everyone.
In closing I would like to thank all the people that make this event so successful. This
would include: exhibitors, vendors, NDSU staff, spectators, and members. It is a pleasure
to work with such great people.

Handling of a Bad Check
The Dakota 50/50 purse is based on a percentage of revenue of the Dakota 50/50 sale. Therefore all announcements of the purse will be considered “unofficial” until all checks have cleared the bank. The official purse of the
Dakota 50/50 will be a percentage of the total collected sales.
Any check that does not clear the bank on the first deposit will be resubmitted upon receipt. If the check does not
clear on the second deposit, arrangements will be made to return the horse to the original consignor within 15
days at the expense of the buyer or face prosecution. This is to avoid any concern regarding the condition of the
colt. Payment will not be made to a consignor until the check for their respective colt clears the bank.
A $500 charge (the same as the grievance free) will be assessed on all unsatisfied NSF checks. Therefore a person
who writes an unsatisfied NSF check to the 50/50 will need to remit $500 in the form of a money order in order to
be in good standing with the Dakota 50/50. Good standing is required to consign, purchase or participate in any
Dakota 50/50 event.
Upon return of the colt to the original consignor, it may retain its eligibility in the Dakota 50/50 Futurity and
Maturity by payment from the original consignor to the Dakota 50/50 in the amount equaling 50% of the sale
price of the colt or 50% of the average sale price of colts consigned to that respective sale, whichever is less. That
money will be distributed per norm, with 80% deposited to the purse and 20% to the general fund. No additional
payment will be due the consignor.
Attention Full-Time College Students
Any full-time college student that purchases a weanling at the 50/50 sale will have the futurity
entry fees waived when they come back to show as the owner/rider, even if no longer going to
school. Proof of full-time student status within 30 days of sale is required.

Maturity General Rules
1. Maturity will consist of one goround, evaluated by one judge.
2. The winner of the Maturity will be the horse
receiving the most points overall from the four
divisions.
3. Horses placing in the top ten in each class will
be given one point plus an additional point for
each horse placing below him, not to exceed
10 points for first place. Points are calculated
through ten placings only.
4. In the case of any ties, points will be equally
split.
5. All horses must compete in all divisions, in
order to be eligible for the purse. Missing a division for any reason, including illness or injury
of horse or rider, disqualifies the horse from
any and all awards and will not be allowed
back into the arena.
6. Random tack checks may take place at any and
multiple times by the ring steward.
7. One exhibitor may show a maximum of up to
two (2) horses in the Maturity Show.
8. The same contestant must exhibit or compete
in all divisions – one horse, one rider – with
the exception being if an exhibitor is competing on more than one horse. In such a case, the
exhibitor must show both horses in all riding
classes (Ranch Riding, Working Trail, Cow
Horse), and show one horse in the Conformation class, while also designating a handler to
show the second horse in the Conformation
class. Handlers must be dressed appropriately
in western attire, and ready on time for their
class as expected with any other contestant.
Exhibitors are responsible for notifying show
committee of who the handler of their second
horse is. Failure to do so may result in disqualification.
9. Maturity order of divisions will be: Conformation, Ranch Riding, Working Trail, and Cow
Horse.
Any horse that has been through the Dakota
50/50 Horse Sale will be eligible to compete
in the Dakota 50/50 Maturity, regardless of
whether or not they competed in the Futurity
as a two year old.
8
Muturity Explanation
There will be one event consisting of four (4) equal parts or divisions in which points are totaled to
achieve a winner. Four and five-year-old horses sold through the Dakota 50/50 Sale are eligible. The
Dakota 50/50 reserves the right to make adjustments in subsequent years.
Maturity Patterns
1. CONFORMATION DIVISION – Emphasis is to be placed on an individual that is conformationally correct and sound
on all feet and legs. That is a balanced, smooth individual whose parts all blend together with eye appeal and the appearance of
an athletic individual, while also keeping in mind that horse’s ability to work and perform. As this is meant to be a working-type competition,
horses should be shown with the appearance of being able to come out of the show ring and go straight to work. Hoof polish, false tails,
banding/braiding of manes or tails, and silver on halters will not be permitted.
2. RANCH RIDING DIVISION – Designed to show the horse’s ability to move at a working speed with a rider. Horses will be shown
individually at three gaits – walk, jog and lope – in each direction of the arena. Horses will also be asked to reverse away from the rail, to stop
and back, extend the jog, and extend the lope in at least one direction of the ring. When asked to extend gaits, the horse should remain calm
and under control. A horse will be given credit for traveling with his head held in a normal position, ears alert and moving at a natural speed
for the gait requested without undue restraint. Credit will also be given for making a smooth transition between the gaits, for keeping the
correct lead, and for maintaining the gait requested for the duration of each portion of the pattern.
Ranch Riding Division and Working Trail Division will be shown back to back. Each exhibitor will individually perform the Ranch Riding
pattern along the perimeter of the arena with the Working Trail obstacles set up in the middle of the arena, and then immediately perform
the Working Trail pattern.
Ranch Riding Pattern:
1. Enter ring and walk from start to cone A.
2. Jog from cone A to cone B.
3. Extend the jog from cone B to cone C.
4. Lope on the left lead from cone C to cone D.
5. Extend the lope from cone D to cone B.
6. Stop at cone B, turn left and jog to cone A.
7. Lope on the right lead from cone A to cone E.
8. At cone E, turn toward the middle of the arena and continue to lope to cone F.
9. With the cones on your right, walk from cone F to cone G.
10. Stop at cone G and back approximately one horse length.
3. WORKING TRAIL DIVISION – Designed to show a horse’s ability and willingness to perform several tasks that might be asked of him
during the course of a normal day’s work. The horse will be judged on three gaits – ground-covering walk, working jog and lope – performed
between obstacles. A horse will be rewarded higher credit for performing these gaits on the correct lead and with an alert attitude. It is
permissible to change rein hand to work an obstacle. An exhibitor that does not perform an obstacle, performs and obstacle out of order, or
performs an obstacle incorrectly will receive a five-point penalty, and a score of zero for that particular obstacle. However, in such a case, the
exhibitor may still proceed to show and be scored for the remainder of the pattern. Exhibitors that miss an obstacle, but perform it later in the
pattern cannot receive a score on that obstacle.
Working Trail Pattern:
The Working Trail pattern will be posted at the Maturity Show. Exhibitors will be expected to study and memorize the pattern before
entry into the show ring for the Working Trail Division. Elements will include, but are not limited to the following, not necessarily in this order:
1. Drag a log.
2. Walk over a bridge.
3. Lope, stop, and back.
4. Back through obstacles.
5. Pass over rails.
6. Dismount and re-mount.
7. Un-bridle and re-bridle.
8. Ground tie and pick up feet.
9. Open, pass through, and close a gate.
10. “Sack out” your horse.
4. COW HORSE DIVISION – This class combines the reining ability and cow sense of the horse, and will be judged on those qualities.
Each contestant will perform individually, and will be allowed a maximum of six minutes to complete the class. In the event that an exhibitor
does not complete their work within the six-minute time limit, they will receive a score up until the point at which their time expired, and
then be required to exit the arena.
The class will be judged in two parts, first with the reining pattern, and then releasing one cow into the arena for the cow work portion.
At the end of the performance, the scores for the two portions will be added together for the final score. After the exhibitor has completed his
reining pattern, he will call for the cow to be turned into the arena. Upon receiving the cow, exhibitor shall hold the cow on the prescribed end
of the arena for sufficient time to demonstrate the ability of the horse to contain the cow on that end (“boxing” the cow). After a reasonable
amount of time, the exhibitor shall demonstrate further control over the cow by moving it down the designated fence – cow must pass
between cone and fence for exhibitor to be scored – to the other end of the arena where the exhibitor must cause the cow to stop or change
direction. Credit will be given for smoothness, control over the cow, degree of difficulty and eye appeal of the maneuver. Penalties will be
given for missing the cone, lack of control over the cow, rough handling of the cow and uncontrolled speed. At this point, the exhibitor will
proceed to box the cow again, at the other end of the arena. Upon completion of second boxing, exhibitor will again move the cow down the
designated fence, and cause it to stop or change direction at the opposite end. Work is complete and judging is finished when the cow has
been taken through the entire pattern, and has made this
final stop or turn. Exhibitors are asked to help pen their cows
before leaving the arena.
While higher speeds may gain credit for smoothness,
degree of difficulty, and eye appeal, it is important that the
exhibitor is still in control. Uncontrolled speed will be cause
for serious penalty. Rough handling of the cattle (crashing
the fence, over-working, etc.) is also unacceptable and may
result in disqualification, at judge’s discretion. However,
the exhibitor should not be penalized in the event of unruly
stock, and is eligible to receive a new cow at any point
during their run, if the judge deems it appropriate, and if
there is sufficient stock. In such a case, time on the run will
be paused until the first cow can be cleared from the arena,
and a new cow released. The time will continue when the
exhibitor resumes their work.
Cow Horse Pattern
Reining Portion:
1. Walk to the center of the arena, stop facing
judge.
2. Beginning to the right, lope three circles on
the right lead, the first large and fast, the second
small and slow, and the third large and fast.
3. At the center of the arena, change leads and do
three circles to the left, the first large and fast,
the second small and slow, and the third large
and fast.
4. At the center of the arena, change leads.
5. Continue loping to the end of the arena, and begin run down near
the approximate center of the arena; run the length of the arena,
past marker.
6. Do a square, sliding stop, hesitate.
7. Rollback to the right, and begin a run to the opposite end of the
arena; run the length of the arena, past marker.
8. Do a square, sliding stop, hesitate.
9. Rollback to the left, and begin a run down past the center marker
of the arena.
10. Do a sliding stop, and back to the center of the arena or at least
ten feet. Hesitate to show completion of dry work pattern.
Cow Horse Pattern/Cow Work Portion:
1. Call for cow to be released into arena.
2. Take control of cow, and box it on the end of
the arena from where it was released.
3. Move cow to opposite end of the arena,
passing between the cone and the wall of the
arena.
4. Stop cow within markers.
5. Continue to box the cow, this time on the opposite end from
where it was released.
6. Again move cow down the arena along the same wall, passing
between the cone and the wall of the arena.
7. Stop cow within markers.
Scoring guide for Working Cow Horse events
Working Cow Horse: The Working Cow Horse division will be judged using scribes to mark the scores. It will be scored as two separate
portions, and then added together to determine the final score for each exhibitor. If the contestant fails to attempt either the reining
portion or the cow work portion of the class, he or she will receive a zero score for the entire class.
The reining portion is to be scored starting with an average score of 70, with exhibitors receiving plus or minus points on each
individual maneuver in half point increments from a low of -2 to a high of +2 with a score of 0 denoting a maneuver that is correct with
no degree of difficulty. Missing a maneuver will result in a score of -2 for that maneuver. Performing a maneuver incorrectly or breaking
pattern will result in a score of zero for the reining portion only; exhibitors may still receive a score for the cow work portion.
The cow work portion will be scored out of a possible 100 points, with each boxing session taking 30 of those points, each run
down the fence taking 10 points, and each stop between the markers taking 10 points. If an exhibitor dos not take their cow between the
fence and the cone during their trip down the fence, they will receive a 5 point penalty. They are eligible to try the maneuver again to receive a score, but every time they miss the cone will be an additional 5 point penalty. Penalties will also be given for failing to stop or turn
the cow within the boundaries of the markers designating the stopping zone (either too early or too late). However, it must be stressed
that exhibitors should not be punished for an unruly cow, and if their missing the markers was a fault of the cow, then they may not be
severely penalized, keeping in mind the degree of difficulty in working a tough cow. However, the highest scoring performance will still
be one that moves the cow down the fence in a controlled manner, making smooth corners and stopping the cow within the markers.

Futurity Explanation
All horses sold in this sale will be eligible to compete in the Dakota 50/50
Futurity as two-year-olds. In the 2011 Sale and prior, 50% of the selling price
of the weanlings sold were retained by the Dakota 50/50 Futurity and utilized
as follows: Futurity purse – 40%, operating expenses – 5% and breeder incentives – 5%. Beginning with the 2012 sale, the distribution changed slightly to
refl ect the addition of the Maturity as follows: futurity purse (35%), maturity
purse (5%), operating expenses (5%), and breeder incentives (5%). The
futurity is one event consisting of three (3) equal parts or divisions in which
points are totaled and averaged to achieve a winner. Each horse entered in the
futurity must compete in all three divisions. There are four judges.
2. RAIL DIVISION – Designed to show a free and easy moving individual that
is relaxed, ears alert, looks balanced and his way of going forward is bright
as well as responsive to the rider at various gaits. When asked to extend the
jog, or may be asked to extend the lope, he moves out with the same smooth
natural way of going. Rail work consists of the walk, jog and lope with the
extension of the jog and possibly the lope, in either direction of the ring to be
shown on a loose rein or light contact without undue restraint. Judging will
be based on the horses’ overall performance and way of going, as well as its
ability to hold the designated gait and correct leads. The rail division will be
done on an individual basis – one horse performing at a time, with scribes to
mark the scores. Order will be determined by random draw for each day.
3. PATTERN DIVISION – Will consist of an individual pattern of work,
designed to show how well broke the horse is. Emphasis is placed on the
execution of the pattern with regard to the correctness of the maneuver and
overall smoothness of the pattern. Horses will be asked to demonstrate leads
and lead departures, circles, simple lead changes, soft stops, back and turn on
the haunches. Maneuvers to be judged at the two year old level. Order will be
determined by random draw for each day.
10-point penalties:
Incorrect lead
Kicking
Crow-hop
Refusal to back
Dismissal:
Rearing or bucking
Horse or rider falling to the ground
Excessive abuse by rider
Futurity
1. CONFORMATION DIVISION – Emphasis is to be placed on an individual
that is conformationally correct and sound on all feet and legs. That is, a
balanced smooth individual whose parts all blend together with eye appeal
and the appearance of an athletic individual.
Both the rail and pattern division will have penalties assessed as
follows:
5-point penalties:
Breaking lead
Excessive speed
Inconsistent speed
Excessive length of transition
Walking stop
Crooked back
Excessive resistance, balking
Excessive Rein contact
General
The same contestants must exhibit or compete in all divisions. One horse, one
exhibitor. Horses must show in all divisions to receive any prize money or award.
All horses are to be shown in a standard headstall and western equipment and
attire. All horses are to be shown in a bosal or snafflebit that meets NSBA Rules.
5/16” bit measurement with a ring size of not less that 2” and no more than
4”. Training devices are prohibited in the show arena and designated warm-up
arena at all times. Split or tied reins may be used, however all horses are to
be shown with both hands on the reins. Horses with false or deadened tails,
or illegal or inhumane equipment in the show arena will be eliminated from
competition. Hair to hair extensions are not permitted. Prize money will be paid
to the top ten in the Futurity. Money will be split in the case of a tie. See rules
and regulations for percentages.
Should any horse change ownership after the 50/50 sale, but before the
Futurity, that horse retains its eligibility for the Futurity. The current owner must
provide notifi cation of ownership to the management. All monies will go to the
current owner of the entry as shown on the current registration with the horse’s
respective breed association.

305 IM WORTH REPEATING
The first lot auctioned will be the “Wild Card.” The high bidder for the “Wild
Card” will have his or her choice of any weanling in the sale! This lot will be
auctioned off in the same manner as every other foal in the sale, with the
exception that no one will know which horse has actually been sold until
the bidding is over and the winning bidder chooses his or her foal. Once
that fola is chosen, it comes out of the regular course of the sale and the sale
resumes with the remainder of the consignments selling in catalog order!
