The group joined students from area Diocesan high schools at two camp sites on opposite ends of the town of Matiguas, Nicaragua. Philanthropy Philanthropy To develop leaders who are critical thinkers and effective communicators, committed to service and rooted in faith. Mission 03 plano food 4 kids peanut butter drive Mayor of Plano Harry LaRosiliere attended a special pep rally on Wednesday, September 30 to collect the 1,566 jars of peanut butter donated by the JPIIHS community. Mayor LaRosiliere challenged JPIIHS to exceed the 1,000 jars the school collected last year for the Food 4 Kids Plano program. “Nothing is greater than seeing our youth help other youth,” he said. “You can either be in the community or part of the community, and JPIIHS is definitely part of the community.” Mayor LaRosiliere is committed to addressing the issue of food insecurity of chronically hungry early childhood and elementary school children in Plano by partnering with North Texas Food Bank to provide them with a backpack filled with nutritious, kid-friendly, shelf stable food, every Friday during the school year. Each backpack contains at least 60% of a child’s nutritional needs for the weekend. “It’s a great opportunity for our students to live our motto, Seek to Serve,” said Christian Service Coordinator Nicki Gonzalez. “The Mayor challenges us every year because he knows we will go above and beyond.” Sal Rega ‘19, Emily Craycraft ‘16, Mayor Harry LaRosiliere, President Thomas W. Poore, Daniel Garcia ‘17 and Lauren Bouvier ‘16 pose with a few of the 1,566 jars of peanut butter collected by the JPIIHS community. The peanut butter drive is part of the Food 4 Kids Plano initiative by the Mayor in conjunction with North Texas Food Bank. students serve at new diocesan school On Saturday, August 22, more than 80 JPIIHS students headed over to the new Diocesan grade school, St. Philip & St. Augustine Catholic Academy. The building had been recently renovated, so students helped clear trash out of the area, and then moved chairs and tables into the cafeteria. Groups of students split up to help teachers in their classrooms with specific needs, such as decorating, cutting, organizing and painting. St. Philip & St. Augustine Catholic Academy opened on August 24 with 320 students. “Being the first missionaries in this part of Nicaragua made my experience just that much more special. I'd say one of my favorite memories was forming a relationship with a little girl who I could barely understand, the language barrier was definitely there yet it never was a problem. I learned so much from this little girl, Dominique, by seeing the kindness in her heart and the joy that she gained from the smallest things.” “My favorite memory from the trip was whenever we had a break or down time from helping build the church, we would play duck duck goose and make bracelets with the local children. I also loved how close I became to all the people on the trip and the many new friendships I have formed because of it!” - Marie Baert -Abbie Vela fall 2015 the cardinal magazine www.johnpauliihs.org 04 lucy santora commitment 05 Stellar seniors john furin Head Football Coach, Coordinator for Athletics Eugenia Jameson Teacher, CP/AP Government, PAL and Senior Class Sponsor Sara Johnson Teacher, English CP II & III International Club Sponsor Hometown: Cleveland, Ohio Family: Wife Donna, daughters Kirsten and Paige, son Kyle and granddaughter Kapri Years at JPIIHS: Two College/University: University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada Hobbies: Family, golf and biking First job: Graduate assistant at University of Western Ontario Dream job: Head football coach at JPIIHS Favorite JPIIHS tradition: Senior Night and Mayfest Last book you read: The Mental Game of Football by Brian Cain Favorite movie: The Longest Day Best advice you ever received: Never give up. Best thing about working at a Catholic school: Formation of the entire student fall 2015 the cardinal magazine Lucy Santora keeps herself pretty busy at JPIIHS during the day. She also keeps herself busy before and after school and almost every weekend with JPIIHS commitments. She is Student Council Vice President, a member of the Recruitment Leadership Council, Academic Honor Council, National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society and the Tri-M Music Honor Society. That would be plenty for the average student, but Lucy is also part of Pro Life Club, SADD, Orchestra, the Cross Country Team, and a Cardinal Belle. Oh, and she was elected to the Senior Homecoming Court. Outside of school she is part of the St. Ann’s Youth Group and the HOBY Alumni Association. So what drew someone as talented and involved as Lucy to JPIIHS? “I decided to make JPIIHS my home not only because of its academic rigor and emphasis on faith, but because of its unique sense of community among faculty, students, and their families,” she said. “My favorite part of JPIIHS is the sense of family. Everyone supports each other’s goals and ideas.” Lucy’s teachers and coaches think she’ll achieve great things after graduation. ““Lucy has been a Belles member for 4 years and in that time I have seen her grow into a remarkable young woman,” said Mrs. Bethany Ralston, Cardinal Belles Director. “She has surpassed life challenges with such grace and poise and is capable of achieving anything she sets her mind on.” At JPIIHS, she has won the Bishop Grahmann Award, and has also won a Catholic Scholars Award and the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Award. Her dream job is to be a CIA operative, but she is interested in psychology. Her top three schools are Georgetown University, Boston College and Johns Hopkins University. Wherever she ends up, she’ll take some important lessons from JPIIHS with her. “JPIIHS has taught me great time management skills through the block schedule and also the importance of looking for and acting upon opportunities to serve the community.” commitment staff profiles jack provost Jack Provost has big goals: to attend the United States Military Academy in West Point, NY; to major in its prestigious engineering program, and to become an officer in the military. “I know that I want to build my foundation on the discipline, service, and leadership that our nation’s military officers embody,” he said. Jack’s time at JPIIHS will certainly prepare him for a career as a leader. He is the captain of the football team, President of the National Honor Society and the Tri-M Music Society, and a squad leader in the Cardinal Marching Band. He was elected State Chairman of the Nationalist Party and was awarded the Counselor’s Choice Scholarship, and named to the Senior Homecoming Court. “Jack is a natural leader, an excellent musician, and a outstanding student who exemplifies the mission and motto of JPIIHS,” said Michael Browning, Cardinal Marching Band Director. So how did JPIIHS end up with such an exceptional student leader? It was actually a family connection. “I decided to attend John Paul II High School because it could offer me more opportunities than any other high school,” he said. “My sister Elizabeth, who transferred in as a junior, sang the praises of her amazing teachers, the community feel of the school, and how refreshing it was to pray to God with her classmates. I wanted especially to share this amazing high school experience with her.” Jack is also a member of the swim team and the track and field team, and plays the tenor saxophone. He is an altar server at JPIIHS and his home parish, Sacred Heart in Rowlett. “My favorite thing about John Paul II is the teachers’ commitment to allowing students to participate in as many activities as they desire,” he said. “The teachers and coaches at JPIIHS encourage multi-sport athletes and well-rounded individuals.” He hopes to take some of the lessons he has learned at JPIIHS with him as he prepares for the next stage in his life. “I have learned at JPII that leadership, effective leadership, is characterized by service,” he said. “I hope to be servant leader at West Point, in my future military career, and throughout the rest of my life. In all things, JPIIHS has taught me to put others before myself.” www.johnpauliihs.org 06 2014 / 2015 A n n u a l R e p o rt John Paul II High School Friends and Family, JOHN PAUL II HIGH SCHOOL CONSOLIDATED STATEMENT OF FINANCIAL POSITION YEAR ENDED JUNE 30, 2015 Amounts in Thousands ($K) 2015 We are pleased to present the accompanying summary of the financial position and performance of John Paul II High School for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2015. The School financial picture continues to be very solid, providing a firm foundation to achieve our mission of forming students. ASSETS Cash and cash equivalents Accounts receivable, net of allowance for doubtful accounts of $50,000 Investments Land, building and equipment, net of accumulated depreciation Financing costs Other assets The 2014-15 school year was particularly noteworthy, as it marked our 10th year since opening in August of 2005. The 10-year celebration was highlighted by the annual gala at Southfork Ranch in March, in which our generous community contributed over $460K. Additionally, the Annual Fund was a tremendous success, with $404K raised – a 46% increase over prior year. The success of both these events – and of other fundraising initiatives – is a testament to the commitment of our entire community. We wish to thank the entire John Paul II High School community for their generosity and support in donating a remarkable $1.5M for the year. We remain committed to ensuring these resources are used as efficiently as possible to further the mission of our school, and we invite you to read the full audited financial report, available on our website. You will see this $1.5M reflected in the Investments line on the Statement of Financial Position. For the current 2015-16 school year, the School instituted a quarterly tuition payment option for the first time. We are excited about this new initiative, and over 220 families have selected this option. In prior years, all tuition was due up front – therefore you will see the impact of the quarterly option reflected in an increase in year-end Accounts Receivable and a decrease in year-end Cash balance. We are confident these balances will level out throughout the year as quarterly payments are received. $ Anitza and Mauricio Arellano AT&T AuctionSource Shawn and Jim Batjer Mary Beth and Craig Berry Rosa and Richard Buch Terre and Maunty Collins Vanessa and Adam Faulk Shannon and Rob FitzGerald Elizabeth and Clay Fuller Elizabeth and Michael Grace Barbara O’Toole Norma and Mike Hemphill Kasey and Bill Hollon Shauna and Steve King Haydee and Kevin Klika Jeanne and Robert Larson Arlene and Dominic Maggiano Sheri and Mark Miller, M.D. Mariana and Jaime Nunez Jamie and Gerald Nystrom, M.D. Lauren and Bob O’Brien Patterned Concrete by Rey Carmen and Eduardo Perez Alicia and Scott Price Tracy and Andy Rawlings Raytheon Valerie and Michael Reiman Lyndi and Vince Schlueter Sinacola Commercial Jacqueline and Dan Spika St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Community Kathleen and Ben Tarantino Mary and Michael Terry Wallace International Jane and Dan Walsh Leanne and Thomas Weymouth $2,500-$4,999 Childress Engineering Services Crest Auto Group Renaye and James Damman David McDavid Lincoln of Plano Michelle and Michael Delaurier Diocese of Dallas President’s Circle Members Vanessa and Adam Faulk Elizabeth and Clay Fuller Stephanie and John Giamatteo Niecey and Trevor Glenn Rita and Bill Haubner Norma and Mike Hemphill Gloria and Mark Huhndorff Amy and Ben Jared Jeanne and Rob Larson Sheri and Mark Miller, M.D. Kathy and Dave Muhlenpoh Jamie and Gerald Nystrom, M.D. Lauren and Bob O'Brien Barbara O'Toole Carmen and Eduardo Perez, M.D. Alicia and Scott Price Gina and Bob Rauker Debralynn and Martin Santora Becky and Steve Schuckenbrock Mary and Stace Sewell Jacqueline and Dan Spika Mary and Richard Templeton Jane and Daniel Walsh Diane and Sean Wilson Champions for Pope John Paul II Janice and Robert Bahash Laurel and Lawrence Barnes Susan and Robert Bodnar Mary and Blaise Bondi Mrs. Bradley Capanyola Susanne and Alfonso Cardenas Kelly and Andrew Carney Carol and George* Coelen Ann and Walt Coughlin Suzanne and John Culin Thomas Cunningham Renaye and James Damman Dr. Michael A. Chandler Malone is currently in the process of preparing for a presentation in Belgium about the European Union’s myriad socioeconomic issues and the best way to solve some of their well documented issues such as the Debt and Refugee Crises. The enormity of the topic doesn’t faze the Washington University student, who is studying and working abroad in London. “Seeing the number of migrants who have left their home countries in search for a home that is free from widespread violence, terror, and corruption has made me even more grateful for the opportunities that I have been blessed with while simultaneously giving me an even stronger drive to maximize my potential as a student and a human being,” he said. Chandler is interning with the commercial analytics team at Manchester United. His American citizenship gives him a unique perspective that the global club needs as they try to increase their fanbase in the States. “We look into specific industries to find the best potential sponsors and also work to manage the over $220 million in sponsorship deals that we currently have,” he said. When he returns to St. Louis to enter the school’s MBA www.johnpauliihs.org program, he will continue running his business, Pyramid LLC. The company began last November in St. Louis and started as discount concert tickets with special amenities, but has blossomed into a multifaceted company that holds live musical performances, bar nights, local cultural events, art galleries, and a variety of other events. Within ten months, they have sold over 25,000 tickets to events and look forward to continuing to grow and hopefully expand outside of the St. Louis area and into other cities nationwide. “One of my proudest developments this year is the launching of the Pyramid Fund, which is going to give back 10% of our profits to youth in St. Louis through various events and giveaways focused on education and the importance of academic excellence,” said Chandler. He has taken lessons from JPIIHS into the world. “JPIIHS did not allow me to settle and become complacent. I was always being pushed to work harder and go above and beyond by teachers, coaches, and administrators,” he said. “Seeking to Serve is a way of life that guides your interactions with others, how you conduct yourself when doing business, and how you prioritize how you spend your time, talents, and resources.” 10 900 Coit Road Plano, TX 75075 Cardinals on CAMERA The Cardinal Belles won the TAPPS Dance State Championship Poms Division in Waco in October.
