Grateful Scholarship Recipient Meets
Delighted Benefactor
Kismet or destiny, it was evident it was a meant-to-be
relationship when donor Pat (DeCoursey) Cercos and
her scholarship recipient, Erika Matson, met for the
first time this past June. The two were instant friends,
sharing stories and laughs, hopes and dreams. When the
Community Foundation scholarship committees select
recipients, great care is taken to make selections that
best fit the award for which the student is being chosen.
Never have these efforts been more apparent than the day
Pat and Erika met.
Back in 2002, with what she called, “not a huge amount of
money,” Pat honored her parents by creating the Albert and
Freda Eder DeCoursey Scholarship Fund in the Clay County
Community Foundation.
“I really wanted the scholarship to stay with the same person
throughout the years he or she was getting a degree,” Pat said.
Erika was the third recipient of the DeCoursey Scholarship,
which she was awarded for all four of her years at DePauw
University. The Clay County resident graduated this past spring
with a degree in music and was hired as band director and
general music teacher for South Vermillion Middle and High
School.
The DeCoursey Scholarship is for a graduate of a Clay County
high school planning to pursue a degree in art or music.
It seemed like a miracle to Pat that two of the DeCoursey
scholars, Ellis Gebert (2003-2007) and Erika, became band
masters, as this was the vocation that Pat's mother, Freda, had
cherished for many years.
Freda retired in 1972 after 26 years with the Staunton/Posey
Township schools. There she “built a good music program grade
by grade,” Pat said. Husband Albert loved music and supported
Freda’s efforts. Pat set up the scholarship for a student
studying the creative or performing arts or arts education.
“Meeting Erika was a delight,” Pat said. “It was wonderful to
see a young person with a passion like my mother’s to be a
music educator. I’m so glad I could have a small part in her
Erika Matson and Pat (DeCoursey) Cercos
education, in doing what my parents would have wanted
me to do.”
Erika was equally complimentary about her benefactor. “Pat
is one of the nicest people I’ve ever met,” she said. “She’s
very interested in what I’m going to be doing with the students
and wants me to keep in touch. One thing that makes her so
amazing is that she wants to do even more, and for me she’s
already done so much!”
Kelli Miller, the Foundation's program director, arranged the
meeting, where Erika was able to thank Pat personally. “I was
grateful for the DeCoursey scholarship because it allowed me
to spend more time studying and doing all the extra things I
needed to do to succeed as a student, instead of spending so
much of my time working,” she explained.
Pat praised the staff at the Community Foundation for its part
in making her charitable goals a reality. “Working with the
Community Foundation is wonderful,” she explained. “They
keep us well-informed about their work. The decisions are
made by local volunteers. And I know my money is being well
managed with professionalism and ethics.”

Board Sets New Policy for Large Grant Requests
The Board of Directors of the Wabash Valley Community
Foundation recently approved a policy statement that
governs applications for large grants. This policy addresses
grant requests in excess of $30,000, as well as most
requests in support of capital funds campaigns.
such requests that provide matching funds for endowments.
The policy states that deadlines for receiving applications for
large grants are the same as for other grants (June 1 and
November 1) and that these applicants will compete equally with
all other applicants.
The Board considered that these requests, while representing
a significant investment in the community, also represent a
considerable portion of the funds available for distribution by the
Foundation in any given year.
Any organization considering applying for a large grant or
matching grant is encouraged to contact the Foundation as soon
as possible in its planning process. Such early contacts might
allow the Foundation’s staff to advise how the application might
be structured so that it is within the scope of the Foundation’s
granting resources. Please direct questions to Executive Director
Beth Tevlin at 812-232-2234.
In general, the policy: 1) sets a cap on capital campaign
requests at $30,000 or 10% of the total amount being sought
in the campaign, whichever is lesser; and 2) gives preference to
