Friends of the Library August 2014 Newsletter Friends of the Ashe County Library Friends of the Library Meeting Wednesday, August 27 at 11:00 AM Howard Covington Lady on the Hill The Biltmore Estate - grand, imposing, beautiful and historic. Come and help us welcome Howard Covington who will discuss his book, Lady on the Hill, How Biltmore Estate became an American Icon, a history of this magnificent home and its transition from a private residence to a world-famous tourist destination. Bring a friend or two and join us for the program. You won’t want to miss this! Friends of the Library 2 Be sure to mark your calendars for this year’s festival, September 16—20. Kathryn Stripling Byer Donna Campbell Friends of North Carolina Public Libraries will hold its annual meeting Saturday, October 25, 2014, at the High Point Public Library, 901 N. Main St., High Point, NC. Former Appalachian Regional Director Mary Sizemore will help FONCPL play host to FOL’ers from across North Carolina. The topic of the meeting will be “Social Media and How It Works for Libraries and Friends.” Awards will be presented, lunch will be served, and networking will be ongoing October 25 so mark your calendars now. Thanks to each of you who purchased books, magazines, AV material and gift baskets during our recent Inventory Reduction event. Final results of this sale will be reported next month. The interesting thing is that non-fiction books were chosen over fiction!! The book sales team feels the event was a success. Remember, when you purchase from the FOL Corner, you are helping the Friends support the many programs that are offered for children, teens, and adults by the Ashe County Public Library. Readers of the romance genre will have an opportunity to again purchase their favorite books at a special sale from August 11 - 23. The cart will be filled with LOVE. Since there are still lots of fiction remaining, a special Friends Fall Fiction Festival is being planned for September. Dates and other details will be announced soon. The entire FOL Corner shelves will be filled with fiction. Bring your author lists and choose your books for Fall and Winter reading. Marcia Rowe FOL Sales Chairperson Friends of the Library 3 Friends of the Library 4 Friends of the Library July 23, 2014 President Clint Johnson called the meeting to order at 11:00 a.m. and welcomed all members and guests. There were 31 people present. In the absence of Treasurer Gary Wolfe, Clint presented the financial report for the period June 26, 2014 to July 23, 2014 with the ending balances as follows: $8,239.94 in checking, $10,000 in the CD, for a total of $18,239.94. Book/Basket Sales Chairman Marcia Rowe reported that book and basket sales are going well and that sales for June 2014 were above the sales at this same time in June 2013. At the end of June we had a total of $1,620.14 in book and basket sales. Marcia reported on the “Inventory Reduction” sale (July 14-July 26). Sales have been good with 1,345 books/magazines/av materials having been sold for a total of $936.50 and 8 baskets have been sold for a sales total of $1,012.50. Membership Chairman Lucinda Glover reported that, as of today, we have 214 members. It is renewal time so, if you haven’t renewed your membership you can do it today. In the absence of Volunteer Chairman Becky Burgess, Clint reported that we are looking for a volunteer to serve on the Board as Special Events Chairman. We also want to establish a Fundraising Committee. We are always looking for volunteers, so if you are interested in these positions or in other ways of volunteering, please contact Becky or Clint. And, speaking of raising funds, don’t forget the “Taste of Honey” event on Saturday, August 2 nd at 6:30 p.m. Shelly Felder will close her store and then re-open for our tasting. Just a $10 admission (donation) and you will be able to taste lots of different, exotic honeys. Mark your calendars and tell your friends! Clint reported that the Irish Temperance band gave a great performance on Saturday, July 19 th at the Ashe County Civic Center, and a little over $2500 was raised for the library. Clint also announced that another fund raiser is in the making—a Scrabble Tournament. Friends’ member Carolyn Andrucci will chair this event which will be in the Spring of 2015. There being no other business Clint introduced our guest speaker, writer Jim Booth, who discussed publishing fiction and blogging about books. Members learned a lot from his very interesting presentation. Clint thanked everyone for coming and invited them back for the August 27 th meeting to enjoy writer Howard Covington. Mr. Covington will discuss his book, Lady on the Hill, a history of the Biltmore Estate and how it changed from a private estate to a world famous tourist destination. The meeting adjourned at 12:15 pm. Respectfully submitted, Pam Tapp, Secretary Friends of the Library 5 $10 L et's put the "fun" in FUNdraising and buzz on over to The Honey Hole, just after closing (6:30 p.m.) on Saturday, August 2nd for an EXOTIC HONEY TASTING! Sherry is excited to share with us some unusual "bee nectar" and attempt to stimulate our pallet with the sweet and sticky stuff we love. Admission to this "bee-u-tiful" event is just $10 which is donated to the Friends of the Library. So BEE there or BEE square - Saturday, August 2nd - at 6:30 p.m. Anyone wanting to wear black and gold or a pair of wings, feel free - get into the spirit of the night. You'll find the Honey Hole down Third Avenue, off Jefferson Ave. If you've never been there, you can't miss the sweet little YELLOW building on the side street, observable from the steps of Ashe County Cheese. And afterwards you can attend the Ashe County Fiddlers Convention at Ashe Park. Make a night of it in West Jefferson! Friends of the Library 6 On the Same Page LibGuide! Membership is $10 per year for individuals; $50 for businesses; $200 for lifetime individuals. The Friends is a 501(c)(3) organization so any donations above membership dues are tax deductible for members itemizing their tax returns.
