This is the secret of Forte Village – we constantly strive for excellence. We do this through our excellent cuisine, created by extraordinary Michelin-starred chefs: Gordon Ramsay, the 11-starred world-class luminary, and two outstanding exponents of the very finest Italian food, Giancarlo Perbellini and Rocco Iannone. And did you know that at Forte Village excellent cuisine means fresh, creative, original dishes, even in our low-calorie menus? So what about excellence in sport? I’m proud to reveal that our resort is now home to the prestigious Basketball Academy, run by champions from the CSKA Moscow team. Also, for tennis fans, how about a game with Rocco Loccisano, Pat Cash’s legendary coach. Moving on to pampering excellence, we have the stunning Thalasso del Forte spa, one of the world’s leading spas and famous for its revolutionary thalassotherapy method. Alongside a wonderful range of saltwater pools, this summer you’ll find our delightful Rejuvenation Ayurveda Park and a series of soothing treatments, originating in India’s most ancient form of medicine. And, for shopping excellence, guests can enjoy an evening’s shopping in our elegant Italian boutiques, with fabulous designs by Bulgari, Zegna, Fendi, Agnona and Santoni, to name but a few. Both have large swimming pools, the pale blue water reflecting the cloudless skies above. They’re bordered by manicured lawns and the occasional sun lounger. The insects hum contentedly and the plants and shrubs around it perfume the warm air. The sense of peace and calm is infectious and you soon feel yourself relaxing both physically and mentally as you wander up to the house itself. The extensive gardens of the Villa Lydia, which wrap around the whole of this stylish holiday retreat, create a sense of calm and the natural world is ever present. The perfect lawns and a mass of shrubs and trees embrace the building while the deep blue sea lies just beyond. Both villas are luxurious holiday residences designed in the tradition of the classic Mediterranean villa. Their interiors are cool and restful– pale, elegantly neutral furnishings contrasted with a dark, polished wooden floor – adds to the sense of the space and calm. On the ground floor of the Villa Forte you’ll find a beautiful double bedroom with two queen-size beds and a bathroom, complete with whirlpool bath and shower. This opens onto a comfortable living room with a large dining table and inviting settees, one of which folds out into a bed. Adding to the feeling of tranquillity and space are wide sliding doors which take you through to the patio and the garden beyond. The living room boasts a fully equipped kitchenette, which also opens onto the patio. If you don’t feel like cooking though, a private butler and chef are available so that you can concentrate on the really important things – such as relaxing in the gardens and splashing around in the gorgeous pool. 09 UNIQ Good to know Upstairs at Villa Forte (there’s even a lift if you’re feeling really relaxed) you’ll find an extensive open-plan bedroom with two queen-size beds and a living area. He has also worked with the Real Madrid team and the Los Angeles Lakers and was inducted into the Italian Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008. He talks about coaching at the Forte Village CSKA Basketball Academy this summer Q What’s the appeal of basketball as a sport? It’s very fast and there’s always lots of drama. Unlike some sports, there’s a winner and a loser in every game, no draws. It’s a sport where everyone does everything – all the players can defend, handle the ball and score. 12 UNIQ Q As an Italian it must be great to see your beloved game played in your homeland? Of course, and Forte Village is such a beautiful place. The location is great and so is the weather. The new court will add even more to the appeal. You can have a relaxing holiday but also play basketball and improve your game – what could be better? 13 Play with Slam dunkin’ superstar Q Coaching and working with young people at Forte Village must be very different from your other work. This is one of the best parts of my job. It means that after an exhausting season I can leave aside the tension of the professional game and devote myself to young people. I want just to focus on these kids who are so keen to learn and to discover a whole new world. Q Why did you decide to take up Forte Village’s offer to coach its young visitors in basketball? Forte Village is well-known for it’s excellent sports coaching and facilities so its a pleasure to join the team here. It’s wonderful that two great sporting names, CSKA Basketball Academy and Forte Village, have joined forces to offer guests some really great coaching. UNIQ Q What are you doing to help the young players at Forte Village this summer? We’re playing a lot of basketball, obviously. The players themselves are showing the kids what to do on the court. I think that our aim for the summer should also be to give each player we train two or three individual tools that they can take away to use to improve their game technique. Regardless of whereabouts they play or their level of skill, these tips will help them to become better players and, in doing so, enjoy playing the game so much more. The kids can also talk to the players about their careers and how they made it. They can learn from our personal experience. My dream is that every young person who comes to Forte Village will go home feeling that they’re a better basketball player than when they arrived as a result of our coaching. Q What makes a good basketball player? To be quick is often more important than being tall. Even at NBA level you can be smaller but still successful if you’re fast. This is an ‘act and react’ game – you need to recognise the situation immediately and work out how to handle it very quickly. Q You’ll be joined with by world-class sports people such as the rugby player Austin Healey and Paul Nixon, the cricketer, so there’ll be quite an atmosphere! I’ve always admired people who are successful in different sports. It’s great to be able to talk to them about how they approach the game and overcome the challenges in order to be a great player or coach. You’ve also got kids coming from around the world – a mix of nationalities and cultures but with a shared passion for great sport. www.fortevillage.com | facebook.com/fortevillage | twitter.com/forte_village CKSA Forte Village is proud to welcome some of the world’s greatest basketball players to the resort this summer. As a professional sportsman I simply love being able to inspire young people through sport. I love watching kids have fun and it really doesn’t matter what standard they are, although there’s something pretty special about spotting some young, raw talent. The advantage of coaching at the wonderful Forte Village Resort is that we’re surrounded by everything to make the perfect family holiday. There’s still plenty on offer for non-sporty members of the family to do too. Younger children, like my twin girls, can be taken care of at the fabulous Kids Club and there’s a brilliant spa, which every mum (and dad!) should try. Q You ring the young people beforehand to discuss what they want to get out of the coaching sessions, how does this help? It’s always interesting to chat to the kids before they get here, it’s just as much about assessing their personality as it is their ability. Q What kind of coaching and advice do you give to the young people at Forte Village? How does it work? All our coaching is tailored to the individual so no two sessions are the same. Boys and girls of all abilities are grouped according to age and ability, so the younger ones are getting to know the basics while the older, Pitch with a pro RUGBY ACADEMY by SST Coaching cricket in the Med with enthusiastic youngsters is better than scoring a century forR UEngland says batsman and wicket-keeper Paul Nixon GBY ACADEMY by SST Q Why do you enjoy coaching young cricketers at Forte Village? Why did you decide to come here? I think it’s important to get kids enjoying sport at a young age and if this can be as part of a family holiday, in a fun, relaxed environment then that’s even better. Frequently at cricket camps in the UK, you find that rain can stop play – I’d much rather be playing and coaching cricket in the Mediterranean sunshine! more experienced kids can get down to the specifics. At the core of our coaching philosophy is fun! We want these kids to be as passionate about the sport as we are. Q What kind of response have you had from your young players? What has overwhelmed me the most is the level of enthusiasm – the kids just love it. I wish I still had that level of energy! I think it’s pretty special for a kid to get one-to-one coaching from someone who has worn an England shirt and I think that’s what they appreciate the most – I hope it’s pretty inspiring for them. Q What kind of cricket coaching and advice do you give to the young people at Forte Village? What does a typical day or session look like? As with rugby, the cricket coaching at the resort is all tailored to individual needs and abilities, we want to make sure that every kid who comes along to one of our training sessions is able to get something out of it specifically for them. We always start the session with a fun, energetic warm up and then it’s down to specifics in individual groups. Q Have you seen any potential rugby stars of the future? There have been a few that stand out, one boy I know has gone on to lead his school under-13 team to a national victory. It was awesome to hear that and I like to think we had something to do with it! Q What do you like to do when you’re ‘off duty’ at Forte Village? What’s your favourite way to relax? There’s nothing I love more than a bombing competition in one of the swimming pools – it’s actually taken quite seriously! My favourite restaurant when eating out with the family is probably the Cavalieri – there’s just so much choice to suit everyone. If I manage to have a meal with just my wife then the Belvedere would have to be our favourite as a couple. Exclusive proposal For parents and children – rugby and sport with a touch of thalasso. What do they appreciate most about the coaching that you offer? I love the energy and excitement that the kids show and I think they love the specific details and the special techniques we can teach them, these are the things that can allow a good cricketer to become a great cricketer. RUGBY ACADEMY by SST Q Cricket is often seen as a very English game but it also has international appeal. What’s it like to play cricket in the middle of the Med rather than Lords, India or South Africa? I love the relaxed feel that we’ve generated in our coaching sessions, and so do the kids. Cricket, like any sport played at the top level, can become very disciplined, but that’s not what a Super Skills experience is about – for us enjoyment is essential. by SST 19 UNIQ Q Have you seen any potential cricket stars of the future? There have been one or two that stand out, but the way for us to ensure they become cricket stars of the future is to generate the passion and commitment for the sport now. Hopefully experiencing one-to-one coaching from someone who has played for their country will help ignite that passion in the kids. Q What do you like to do when you’re ‘off duty’ at Forte Village? What’s your favourite way to relax? I love all sport so you can usually find me taking out one of the Forte Village bikes or going windsurfing when not coaching. I’m not one to sit on the beach with a book, especially when there’s so much on offer at the resort. When dining out, the Brazilian has to be my favourite restaurant – great relaxed environment with delicious simple food. Every day is action-packed, but relaxing nonetheless, as Jane relates in her diary 8am One of the things I love most about being on holiday is breakfast. Instead of the usual cereals, toast and instant coffee thrown onto the table in a mad rush as everyone races to get out of the house in time for work and school, at the Forte Village resort, in one of the amazing family bungalows with a private garden, we arrive at breakfast to a huge array of freshly baked rolls and croissants, continental hams and cheese, displays of fresh fruit and exotic juices. As we wander into the Bellavista Oasis we’re met by the aroma of fresh Italian coffee. Tom, who’s 14 and seems to have hollow legs, has soon piled a plate with scrambled eggs, Parma ham, grilled Mediterranean tomatoes and almost everything else he spies and his father has followed suit! Sixteen-year-old Amy and I opt for fresh fruit and yogurt while, Harry, aged nine, has created his own concoction of croissants, pancakes and chocolate spread. Today Tom’s off for rugby training with Austin Healey, the former English Rugby Union player. Normally pretty blasé, Tom was so impressed by the fact that Austin had actually rung him before we arrived here to talk about the training. It’s really an amazing service that Forte Village offers – his friends were green with envy. “I’m taking part in the fashion show,” Amy reminds me, when I ask about her plans for www.fortevillage.com | facebook.com/fortevillage | twitter.com/forte_village the day. How could I forget? She’s been talking about the prospect of working with professional make-up artists and models non-stop for days. Harry is desperate to go back to Kids’ City to play in the swimming pools with his new-found friends. Later it’ll be pizza making in the cookery classes. Charlie, clearly keen to justify the plateful that he’s just demolished, explains that he’s booked a golf lesson through the Wentworth Golf Academy. “It’s got a new driving range where you can hit into a private lake,” he says. “And I’ve just discovered that Is Molas, one of the best clubs in Europe, is less than ten minutes away from here.” 9am Breakfast finished, we split up. I’m off to see Forte Village’s own fashion expert, Marina Vitiello, for an exclusive private shopping session. What’s so brilliant about the shopping here is that, instead of the usual dreary beachwear and well known labels that I could buy just as easily back home, they have clothes by designers that you just won’t find anywhere else. It’s also a pleasure being able to spend some time talking to Marina about what’s the right look for me. The children compete to tell me what they’ve been up to that morning. Even Tom, who’s normally monosyllabic, can’t stop talking about what Austin said to him. Charlie is also impressed with the golfing facilities. “It’s got an amazing course and putt section,” he says, perusing the wine list. A gentle breeze wafts in from the turquoise sea and, alongside the children’s chatter I can just hear the crash of the waves below us. The tranquil garden nearby will be good for a walk after lunch. We order simple grilled fish drizzled with local olive oil and a salad. The boys are even hungrier than usual after their energetic mornings and Amy is busy describing a new hairstyle that one of the stylists has shown her. “Later, I’ll show you what I bought this morning,” I whisper to her. After lunch the children race off, keen to resume their morning activities. Charlie and I have decided to spend time together doing a cookery lesson with Rocco Iannone. Where else could you work with a Michelin-starred chef and cook his light and fragrant madeleine dessert? One of the things I love about Forte Village is that not only do you have time to relax and indulge but each of member of the family actually learns something new – from real experts in their field. You come back afterwards feeling refreshed and fulfilled. 5pm It’s time for a treatment at Forte Village’s spa, the Thalasso del Forte. Being immersed in a series of seawater pools at different temperatures and with different salt contents – some with a higher saline concentration than the Dead Sea – together with the use of sea oil, is very beneficial and there’s a lot of science behind it. The spa’s numerous awards are proof enough of that. For me, though, it’s all about the feeling of perfect tranquillity and the sense of calm and balance that you experience in a place like this. Even Charlie, who claims that he can never see the point of spas, goes for a massage, emerging an hour later feeling and, it has to be said, looking like a new man. “That was amazing,” he says, “I feel like I’m floating on air.” Before we leave, I make sure to book an appointment for one of Dr Ali Mosaraf’s world-renowned treatments which combine Ayurvedic medicine with naturopathy and yoga. I’ll be following in the footsteps of Prince Charles and Claudia Schiffer. 7pm While the kids have their supper in the kids’ restaurant (last night it was organised by the babysitter and the night before by the staff of Kids’ City), Charlie and I slip away to the Aquatica bar for a quiet aperitif of champagne and to try some canapés. We’re still feeling intensely relaxed from our spa treatments earlier and, because of this, feel there is little need to speak. Instead we breathe in the fresh sea air and stand together quietly, watching the sun beginning to set. It’s all about the perfect tranquility and the sense of calm and balance that you feel in a place like this www.fortevillage.com | facebook.com/fortevillage | twitter.com/forte_village 23 UNIQ Tom was so impressed that Austin had rung him before we arrived to talk about training 8pm Having checked that the younger kids are sound asleep after their various activities, Charlie leads the way to the Forte Gourmet restaurant where, unbeknown to me, he’s already booked a table. As the lights glitter across the stillness of the Ocean pool we sip a chilled local white wine and browse the menu. The food is simple and it uses local ingredients and I love the way that Iannone takes traditional Italian cuisine and gives it a modern twist. 10.00pm After dinner we wander down the Piazza Maria Luigia for Amy’s fashion show. The excitement is palpable as the audience gathers, women fanning themselves and men fiddling with cameras. This must be just like attending the real collections in Paris or Milan. When it starts, the input of the professionals is apparent. Charlie snaps away while I feel a rush of motherly pride. 10.30pm The air is still warm and the sound of people eating, drinking and chatting blends with music from the amazing resident band. The shops are still open and I persuade Charlie to buy an elegant black dress shirt. “It makes you look Italian,” I tell him. “Grazie” he replies nonchalantly. 11pm We really do feel as if we’re on holiday now and so we head off to Forte Fortissimo. I’ve forgotten that Charlie is actually quite a good dancer – although he needs a little encouragement! As, we wander back to the hotel holding hands and looking up at the stars, Charlie asks if I want to take a boat trip to the tiny Isola di San Pietra, all easily organised by the Concierge service at any time. We decide to think about it, after all, we’ve got plenty of time. www.fortevillage.com | facebook.com/fortevillage | twitter.com/forte_village > Dinner Dance: amazing food is just the start of an unforgettable evening 24 UNIQ > Exclusive Proposal Sport & Leisure Children’s Pass Created for children up to 14 years old, this very special offer allows kids to use all the sports and leisure activities at no extra charge. He won the Italian Tourism Championship in 1991. He’s also an off-road motorcycle buff who has the gruelling Baja 1000 race in Mexico under his belt and still dreams of competing in the legendary Paris-Dakar rally. His current enthusiasm is for ‘enduros’, off-road motorcycle rallies. So, you might wonder, how is it that someone with these impressively macho credentials can create fashion that is so flattering, so delicate in colour and cut and so feminine? His pieces are seen in the world’s great fashion thoroughfares including the Via Montenapoleone in Milan and the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris. They’re now in Forte Village. “Forte Village is an exclusive resort with a chic international and domestic clientele, absolutely in line with the Pinko brand positioning,” explains Negra. The Pinko look at Forte Village and across his stores internationally is, he says, “an optical look, sporting chic, neo-Baroque style, an Orient Express mood and rich bright colours.” qualities,” he explains. “She has the sleek black panther swank of Naomi Campbell, the sculptural perfection of Elle Macpherson, the dazzling vitality of Eva Herzigová and the the feminine charm of Elisabetta Canalis. Ever contemporary and sophisticated, the Pinko woman is smart and cosmopolitan and loves dressing with slick, sexy flair. She’s a mature and dynamic individual with a strong personality and a clear grasp of her own femininity.” The label mixes luxury with fashion-forward looks, denim and casual styles. Ever since the 1990s Pinko has been known, of course, for its bags – capacious and practical but stylish and individual, they come in citrus shades and elegant organic colours. One bag collection that the company is particularly excited about is its Bags for Ethiopia. Unveiled during Milan fashion week, this new collection has an ethical significance that is gaining ground with a growing number of fashion and luxury labels. Sculptural perfection “After 12 years of success with the Pinko bag collection, we decided to revisit and relaunch the concept by merging aesthetics and ethics through a global awareness initiative where we could put African culture, traditions and colours to beneficial use in a fresh fashion context,” explains Negra. He invited Marina Spadafora, the pioneering Italian designer and Ethical Fashion ambassador, to create the bag collection with “awareness and renewal” as the inspiration behind each design. Spadafora says: “Through this project I expressed my motto ‘fashion with a mission’ by reproducing the body painting signs and symbols of the tribes of the Omo Valley in southern Ethiopia on each bag.” Pinko participates in Fashion for Development (F4D), a global awareness project that seeks to nurture economic growth and independence in developing countries through the power of fashion. In full support of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, F4D creates awareness of women as cultural caretakers of artisanal traditions. The Pinko Bags for Ethiopia are made from 100 per cent African cotton by an all-female team of workers in an eco-sustainable factory in Addis Ababa. “This is a totally viable business, with no element of charity,” explains Marina Spadafora. Whether it’s a Bag for Ethiopia, or one of Pietro Negra’s sexy, feminine T-shirts, dresses or shoes, Pinko is a must-have label for Forte Village guests this summer. Negra’s confidence in what women want this season is based, like his international success over the decades, on a thorough grounding in fashion, an almost scientific approach to the business of design, production and marketing. Deciding to go into business rather than complete his studies, Negra began making T-shirts under contract in 1973. In the early 1980s he worked for the CenterGross, a wholesale fashion hub in Bologna. By 1993, in tandem with his wife, Cristina Rubini, he launched the Pinko brand. It has grown steadily over the years and generated €162 million in sales in 2011. Today his inspiration, he says, comes from “many sources, from sensations and feelings, emotions, vibrations and intuitive ideas that highly sensitive people – namely, fashion designers – are quick to grasp and then make their own.” Rather than having one muse, he’s inspired by a variety of very different beautiful women. “The Pinko woman is an aggregate of many different Fashion with a mission The peak of chic: The brand is famous for its elegant stores www.fortevillage.com | facebook.com/fortevillage | twitter.com/forte_village On the move: Pinko is popular in Hong Kong and Naomi Campbell (below) is a fan www.fortevillage.com | facebook.com/fortevillage | twitter.com/forte_village 31 UNIQ S PA filigrane italian handmade Relax, refresh & rebalance A haven of peace and tranquillity under the cloudless Sardinian skies, Thalasso del Forte has been recognised as one of the leading spas of the world, thanks to our team of wellbeing experts and the natural splendour of its tropical garden setting F jewerly precious fabrics ceramics filigrane: FORTE VILLAGE piazza Maria Luigia - Ricevimento centrale Su Triaxu Sa Terrallia: SANT’ANTIOCO - corso Vittorio Emanuele, 130 call: +39 349 3262045 - 340 2913841 mail: filigranegioielleria@gmail.com orte Village attracts some of the world’s most celebrated chefs to its exclusive restaurants, and professional sportspeople and coaches to its range of activities. Something old, something new 38 UNIQ Giancarlo Perbellini has founded some of Verona’s most celebrated restaurants, including the two-Michelin-star Dodici Apostoli. La Locanda is his elegant restaurant at Forte Village Q What are you planning to cook this summer at La Locanda? It will be a tribute to Sardinia featuring classic dishes prepared in a contemporary way. Most of all, though, the menus will be a celebration of the season. That’s because my secret as an Italian chef and the soul of La Locanda at Forte Village is a deep respect for the food calendar and the ingredients associated with it. This dedication to the seasons means that we can offer a variety of products, together with a freshness, an intensity as well as wonderful fragrances and a unique style – in a word, Italian! Q So what will guests who know and love La Locanda see that is different? They’ll discover a menu that is completely new. They might want to start with a risotto alla marinara, that is a sauce with lightly cooked shellfish, accompanied by wonderful Sardinian wines like Vermentino Capichera and Dettori. Another great starter is prawns with pesto, steamed potatoes and green beans – a version of that great classic pasta dish of Genoa. Coming back to Sardinia, I’m working on a recipe for pork with a sauce made with myrtle berries, cooked in a very modern way. Q Sounds amazing! What about dessert? The must-have dessert for 2013 will be another modern take on a classic dish. This time it’s cassata, a traditional type of Sicilian cake but I’m creating an exciting new version with pistachio mousse, ricotta – Sardinian ricotta is absolutely fantastic – plus candied fruit, pine nuts and ground pistachios. Q I understand that we’ll also see two classic and much-loved dishes on the menu again? Yes, of course. One is spaghetti with tomato sauce. This sauce is made with wonderful tomatoes especially imported from Pula. There will also be a choice of three sauces to choose from at the table: pesto, olives and cheese. Alongside that is another timeless dish – fillet Rossini. Made with the best fillet steak layered with pâté and served with Madeira sauce, the way we do this classic combination is surprisingly light and so it works well even in the summer. Q What else have you brought from mainland Italy to Sardinia? An amazingly tasty but extremely simple starter which consists of just goat’s cheese and pepper. Q So, how would you summarise the ‘Perbellini style’? It’s about cooking traditional, much-loved recipes but with an exciting, modern execution. That’s how I would describe my style of cookery. Really though, when it comes to fine cuisine its all about the people involved, they’re worth more than any words used to describe the food. My team at La Locanda is always curious about new ideas and willing to try them out in the kitchen. They’re also always ready to question themselves and develop as chefs, which is so important. Then there’s also my wife, Paola, who accounts for half the Perbellini style – as well as half my heart. La Vodka Più Quotata al Mondo.* Gusto Intenso. Oldani is collaborating at La Cantina with Pommery Champagne. This combination of a classic champagne label and a chef who enjoys challenging convention, is sure to produce some beautiful flavours. UNICO, Fabio Baldassare’s restaurant in Milan is famed for its views across the city’s skyline and the sight of chefs at work in the neo-industrial splendour of its kitchens. At La Cantina the two-Michelin-starred chef will be working with Bersano winery. Franck Reynaud is Executive Chef at l’Hostellerie du Pas de l’Ours, one of the finest restaurants in Switzerland. Known for its delicious and deceptively simple cuisine, Reynaud’s food uses fresh local ingredients. For this collaboration, Reynaud will be working with a variety of different wines chosen by Balan, one of the most successful Italian buyers and importers of fine French wines. His restaurant, Gellius, in Treviso might boast ancient ruins with great columns and rough brick walls, but Alessandro Breda’s cooking is light and fresh. Using seasonal ingredients the Michelin-starred chef’s clever reinventions of traditional and local dishes have earned him a loyal following of discerning food lovers. Breda’s dishes will be matched with wines from the highly respected Ca’ del Bosco winery. He has a passion for using fresh, local and season ingredients and sees himself as a conduit between the producers who supply his kitchen with these ingredients and the customers who enjoy dining on them at his restaurant Agli Amici at Udine. Scarello’s menu will be accompanied by wines from the famous Antinori winery. Mascia has been at work in the kitchen since he was just 14 years old. The bold flavour combinations for which his restaurant San Domenico, just outside Bologna, is famed, involves the unique execution of classic dishes. Mascia is constantly looking to innovate and renew while maintaining the strong roots of traditional Italian cuisine. The dishes produced by this celebrated chef with his two Michelin stars are matched with the Castellare di Castellina winery, well known for its hearty, full-bodied Chianti. Having travelled the world, working in some of the finest hotels and restaurants, Tommaso Arrigoni and Eros Picco were given the opportunity to take over an established family restaurant and make it new and exciting. Forte Village has all they need Social life: left, Amedeo Guffanti, partner and general manager of 77Agency and right, a social machine for wine producer Canti in action at Harrods H ave you looked at your Facebook page today? Nearly a quarter of Facebook users do so five times daily. These days whenever we find something that we like we’re increasingly likely to talk about it through social media and share it with the 270 friends that the average Facebook user has. Companies are more aware than ever of the power of social media such as Facebook to help them reach their existing and potential customers. This summer Forte Village has started to work with one of the world’s most successful social media companies, 77Agency. Now celebrating its tenth anniversary, 77Agency was founded in London and today it has offices in cities which include Milan, Amsterdam, New York and Sydney among others. It works in 20 countries, dealing with 12 languages and clients include Lavazza coffee and Estée Lauder. It’s also worked with luxury brands such as Bulgari and French fashion house Vionnet. Values and opportunities “We offer our clients a 360-degree service, showing them the value and opportunities offered by digital media,” says Amedeo Guffanti, General Manager at 77Agency. “With conventional media you would just buy advertising on a TV channel or in a certain newspaper. Now, with digital media, it’s more about the audience and choosing the right platform for genuine communication with them.” In this case that means the luxury consumers who visit Forte Village – or who might do. Over the last decade, as Internet usage has exploded, the agency has helped clients with search engine optimisation, affiliate networks and, most recently, with social media. “We were one of the first to create an official partnership with Facebook in 2009. Then, last year, we became a Strategic Preferred Marketing Developer.” Facebook describes this position as “the highest distinction of excellence we have ever offered to our marketing developers.” Last year only 12 of these positions were granted and just two were outside the US. Facebook favoured status “It provides us with enormous benefits and privileges when it comes to working with Facebook and we can pass those onto our clients,” says Guffanti. Not only does it mean that clients’ advertising can be targeted most effectively to each of Facebook’s 1 billion users, but 77Agency can help its clients to communicate more effectively with those users. The company is using bloggers, for example and this summer some of the world’s top fashion bloggers will be invited to write about Forte Village alongside posts created by guests and by the resort itself. “We’re always looking for new initiatives,” explains Guffanti. “We’re creating what we call ‘social machines’.” This could be, for example, a card or bracelet that can be read by a computer to indicate where the user is so that they can more easily post what they’re doing – perhaps attending a wine tasting at Harrods. Luxury customers There has been some concern among luxury brands about the effects of social media and the risk of losing control of the image, but Guffanti offers some reassurance. “As with our social life generally, our friends usually come from the same backgrounds,” he says. “Luxury customers tend to belong to the same communities and so they will talk to other luxury customers online about what they’ve bought and where they’ve been – and that includes a relaxing stay at Forte Village.” 53 UNIQ Spoilt for choice: young people have plenty to keep them entertained K eeping teenagers happy on a family holiday can be a challenge, a fact of which many parents are all too aware. It’s about getting the details right; about service that ensures that everything is provided before guests have even thought to ask, and about guests feeling constant delight at the positive attitude of the staff around them. That’s very much the philosophy of the Hotel Business School, winner of one of the Best Masters and MBA Worldwide awards as well as the provider of Italy’s number one masters degree, as voted by Eduniversal. Teaching staff at the school come from every part of the luxury travel business, including Harvard and Cornell Business Schools, and have unbeatable practical experience as well as academic qualifications. It’s hardly surprising that 95 per cent of students of the Hotel Business School land excellent jobs even while still studying. Graduates of the school have gone on to work in such prestigious establishments. With the impressive qualifications and practical experience that the Hotel Business School offers, hundreds of young people have found rewarding, well-paid roles including Food & Beverage Manager, Revenue Manager, Sales & Marketing Manager and Events Manager as they work their way up to General Manager, overseeing every aspect of a luxury five star hotel. Francesco Bagnoli, a Hotel Business School graduate, has now landed a career as Revenue Manager at the Jumeirah Grand Hotel in Rome. “My role is about predicting consumer demand to optimise price availability in order to maximise revenue growth,” he says. “Revenue Management is an approach taken by businesses that want to optimise their revenue stream. This is achieved by way of a thorough understanding of the marketplace that manipulates product demand, timing and targeting to best effect, through several yield techniques.” He attributes much of his success to the Master Five Stars. “The Master course gave me the opportunity to get in touch with the hospitality world and to move further towards the five-star hotel sector. I really appreciate the Master Five Star Hotel Management course for its didactic programme, the quality of lectures and the resulting job opportunities.” The Master in Five Star Hotel Management, promoted by Forte Village Resort and the Luiss Business School, provides unique training, complete with excellent placements, which focuses on the challenging, demanding but hugely rewarding business of five-star hospitality.
