Missouri businesses with fewer than 50 full-time workers will be able to access the Small Business Health Options Program, or SHOP, in late October, ahead of the start of open enrollment on Nov. 15. Employers, agents and brokers will be able to complete eligibility applications, upload an employee roster, and view plans and pricing once they become available. This online access will give small employers another option to best find coverage to suit their employees’ needs. President Barack Obama’s administration had delayed SHOP’s scheduled implementation in states with federally facilitated exchanges last year to prioritize fixes to HealthCare.gov. The SHOP exchange, created by the Affordable Care Act, is designed to allow employers to compare competing plans. The company could then offer its employees a choice from among several policies. The law also allows businesses with fewer than 25 employees to potentially qualify for a tax credit worth up to 50 percent of the cost of their insurance plan’s premium purchased through the SHOP exchange. Companies with fewer than 50 fulltime workers are not required to provide coverage for their workers. Missouri was chosen for the early access period along with Delaware, Illinois, Ohio and New Jersey after the department analyzed the state insurance markets, the availability of employee choice and the presence of a reliable ground operation to engage stakeholders according to the Department of Health and Human Services. BCMS Students Selected for Be the Change Award Sania Palmer and Saul Villar-Medina were selected for the Bernard Campbell Middle School Be the Change Award. To receive this recognition, the students demonstrated high standards of behavior and have been involved with school in a positive way. The criteria used for the award includes demonstrating exemplary behavior in the classroom and hallways, displaying a positive attitude in the classroom and hallways, displaying a positive attitude toward teachers and other students, and exhibiting great character at BCMS. The two students also received a token of thanks from the school’s business partner, Summit Bank of Kansas City. They will be displaying all of the new products and merchandise to be offered during the 2014 holiday season. The event takes place from 6-8 p.m. on November 18, at the Hilton Garden Inn in Independence. More than 40 locally-owned businesses will feature the latest and greatest wares for shoppers wanting to get an early start on their Christmas shopping before Black Friday. Shop owners and sponsoring organizations are enticing shoppers with free giveaways, pre-holiday discounts on merchandise, food, drinks and more. Last year, more than 400 attendees took advantage of the good weather, great deals and scrumptious food to get a leg up on their shopping in a fun and festive atmosphere. Shop On is open to the public and is being sponsored by local chambers and economic development organizations in eastern Jackson County in an effort to support and strengthen our local retail businesses. For more information on participating in this event and available sponsorship opportunities, contact Mark Dickey at 816-524-2424 or mdickey@lschamber.com. Oktoberfest Committee Co-Chair Honored By Allstate Jeff Silver, a Lee’s Summit insurance agent and Oktoberfest Committee co-chair, recently received an award from Allstate for his volunteerism, which resulted in a $1,000 grant to Hope House. Silver was given the “Agency Hands in the Community Award” and the Allstate Foundation made the grant. Silver said he helps Hope House by volunteering to help with various fundraisers such as races, or serving as a ticket taker at Starlight Theater. “I fill in here and there when they need the extra help,” Silver said. Opening of a Third Primary Care Clinic Expands Access to Saint Luke’s East Respected Blue Springs and Grain Valley-area family physicians Elizabeth Dexter-Manade, M.D., Gregg Klosener, D.O., D.P.M., and Alan Scharrer, M.D., have joined Saint Luke’s Medical Group and launched a new practice in late September. The new primary care office, Saint Luke’s Medical Group–Lee’s Summit North Medical Pavilion, will be conveniently located on the Saint Luke’s East Hospital campus at I-470 and Douglas Street. The practice will provide comprehensive health care for patients of all ages. Services include preventive and acute care, routine checkups, immunizations, patient education, and more. “We are looking forward to being a part of Saint Luke’s growing services in Eastern Jackson County and providing residents increased access to primary care services,” said Dr. Scharrer. “With our move to Saint Luke’s, we are pleased our patients will have access to Saint Luke’s evidencebased, patient-centered health care.” Since the hospital opened in 2006, it has continually grown to meet the health care needs of the community. Saint Luke’s also opened an additional primary care office in Independence in July. “We have seen an increase in the number of patients throughout Jackson County and beyond choosing Saint Luke’s for their health care needs,” said Ron Baker, Saint Luke’s East Hospital CEO. “With the opening of the new primary care office in Independence, and now a second office on our campus, residents will have even greater access to Saint Luke’s high quality health care services.” Appointments are now available, and patients may call 816-347-4600 to schedule. Saint Luke’s Medical Group– Lee’s Summit North Medical Pavilion will be located at 110 NE Saint Luke’s Blvd., Suite 245, Lee’s Summit, MO 64086. page 9 October Networking Opportunities & Seminars Register for the events below online at LSchamber.com under the Calendar of Events chamber erhours t f a Socialize Build Business Join fellow Chamber members on October 9 from 4:30–6 p.m. for Chamber After Hours at Alissa’s Flowers & Interiors, 19321 East 40 Highway, #H, Independence, Mo. Little-Known Interviewing Techniques to Find the Best Candidate October 7 | 3:30–4:30 p.m. | John Knox Village, Manhattan Rm Presenters: Jef Nance, CFE, Columbo Hiring Hiring is a little like getting married-after just one date! Even the ‘wrong’ person for the job may be able to carry themselves well in the interview, only to fall short quickly after being hired. As a police interrogator, Jef Nance developed techniques not just for finding deception in what others say, but for finding the truth. Jef has refined these techniques for you to use in any conversation in a completely non-confrontational style. Small business owners know their craft well. But when it comes to interviewing prospective employees, they’re suddenly forced into a craft that few know how to do well. Learn how to close this frustrating gap and find the best candidate the first time. Registering for events is easy at LSchamber.com!
