Cornershot Update www.fieldhockeybc.com Message from the Director, Marketing In the same week that the Provincial Government announce a new ministry for sport, namely the ‘Healthy Living and Sport Department’, Field Hockey BC (FHBC) continues its review of marketing opportunities within the sporting sector and specifically within our sport of field hockey in BC. In this issue: • Message from the • • • • • • • • Director, Marketing Club Championships results. BC Teams selections National Teams update. ‘Coaching Corner’ by Robin D’Abreo Sponsors’ page Cal Cup results Upcoming events. and more! Field Hockey B.C. has moved! The new address is: 202-210 West Broadway Vancouver, V5Y 3W2 604-737-3046 Internally, Field Hockey BC has designed and launched a new website which continues to improve communications within our community. The website medium is one that the Society wishes to build upon in 2008/2009 with FHBC forging stronger partnerships with Post Secondary Institutions and our domestic High School structure, as well as improving on the challenges presented in the promotion of media and corporate relations. International links, blogs, video links, the promotion of hockey at the regional and grass roots levels are all target marketing areas for the very near future. To this end, the Field Hockey BC Board and Staff are hoping to be able to identify individuals who are willing to report on local and regional field hockey activity, whether this is school, league, tournament or human interest based. Regional and local media coverage is key to building momentum in media relations across BC and consistent coverage in the submission of articles is essential. Should this spark an interest in you, please feel free to contact me, my fellow Board Members, or the Field Hockey BC staff and get our sporting highlights into your community news. Hand in hand with domestic promotion are the benefits that can be derived from International exposure. The Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament held in April and May this year in Victoria, combined with the Men’s National Team’s qualification for the Beijing Summer Olympic Games continue to showcase the sport of field hockey domestically, nationally and Internationally. We can only hope to be able to build on this exposure and especially media coverage as we complete our summer programs and the National Men’s team leave to compete at the Beijing Olympic Games. Brian Groos has been involved in field hockey, sports development and promotion in Australia, Europe, and North America. Most recently Brian has been involved with the management and promotion of two major International events hosted in the City of Victoria in 2008, as Venue Director for the BMX World Championships and Transportation Chair for the Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament. Brian also continues as a coach and mentor to teams and athletes within programs offered by Field Hockey Victoria. Ed. The final game was played at Wright Field on Sunday June 1st against Hawks. The Hawks team scored two goals on penalty corners in the first half and led 2-1 at half time. The Saints A team stormed back with 2 unanswered goals, the last one scored with less than 10 minutes to go in the game. It was an exciting finish to the 6 team tournament. Victoria defeated Burnaby to win the bronze medal and West Van defeated Saints B for 5th place. All coaches, umpires, managers, players and volunteers should be congratulated for a week-end of hockey that displayed skill, speed, grit and desire. The Eagles took advantage of their familiarity with Field Turf early in the game, scoring a field goal in the first few minutes. The White Hawks began to regain territorial advantage in the second half, almost tying the game during two goal mouth scrambles. However, the Eagles hung on to capture the title. Each of these teams played on Saturday June 7th at Tamanawis in the last game scheduled for the night of the U16 Club Championships. It was scheduled to be played at 8pm but was not started until 9:15 because previous games went long. The teams had played about half the game when the lights went out (they are on a timer). The two teams agreed to finish the game at 7:30am the next morning so not to interfere with the schedule. They both should be commended for their cooperation. For the Black Hawks, the last game of the day was their 4th; they had started the day at 8am! Club Championship Wrap-Up The U14 Girls’ championship weekend wrapped up a busy Club Championship season on Sunday, June 22. The club championships were a huge learning experience and definitely a challenging task that would not have been possible without the following people. I would like to thank: • • • • • • • All of the players for coming out and participating in this year’s Club Championship tournaments. Congratulations to all the winners! The coaches and parents for making sure their teams/children were at their games ready to play. The managers who were organized and kept me on my toes with the scheduling and umpires’ assignments. The Club Organizers who were responsible for getting the equipment and finding parent volunteers to help at the Technical Tables during games. The Umpires – Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Without all of your help and dedication to this sport these tournament would not have been possible. Thank you for covering extra games Caitlin Meredith for answering numerous e-mails and phone calls, keeping the Club Championship website pages up to date, rounding up umpires and just being super organized!! And all the other FHBC staff for answering my questions and giving me a hand when needed. If you have any feedback, comments or ways to improve on the club championships I would love to hear them. Even though this was my second year attending the Cal Cup international field hockey tournament in Ventura, California, it was still an amazing experience. We got to meet a variety of like-minded athletes of all ages. This year the weather was perfect for playing field hockey. We were all hoping for blistering heat, but when we realized how brutal it would have been, we thanked the field hockey gods profusely for blessing us with the light mist that ignited an unbeatable force in us. The fields that we played on were all grass. Since we normally play on artificial turf in Vancouver before the tournament we had special practices on the grass fields at Hugo Ray Park. What differentiates the Cal Cup tournament from others is the high performance games that anyone can go see at anytime. When we finished playing each of our own games we walked a very short distance and watched top level players from top-level field hockey countries like Argentina and Mexico battle it out. Lots of different field hockey equipment and food is sold at the onsite venues. I think the best thing about this tournament compared to most others is the ratio of playing time to rest time. The amount of field hockey you play is perfect, but you also have plenty of time to relax, shop, sight see, and tan. My team, the West Vancouver Under-15 Bulls placed first in the Under-16 division. We played teams from Ventura County, Hollywood, Kentucky, and 2 northern Californian teams and beat them all. With 27 goals for and 2 against we took the gold back to Canada … the fourth year a row that a team from WVFHC has won the Under-16 division in this international tournament. We thank our coach Bill Purcell and the 4 other parents that took us to California for such a fantastic experience. There’s nothing better than playing field hockey in the sunny state of California where you can tan and shop! By Katrina Davis Cornershot Update Vol. 1, No. 8 page 14 June, 2008 Cal Cup Results (continued) Cal Cup 2008 by Andrew Schouten Total Field Hockey once again had an excellent representation at Cal Cup 2008 with 3 teams – U16 Girls “TFH Canucks” Team, Lady Birds played in the Women’s Competitive Division and the Dirty Birds in the men’s Super Division. The “Birds” descended in Los Angeles on Thursday 22nd May looking forward to some sunshine and warm weather. But the weekend weather was rather disappointing – in fact – gloomy except for a few rays now and then, almost like Vancouver weather! Perhaps, we had taken the weather down there and cleared it up for the folks at home! While the Dirty Birds played 2 of their pool matches on Friday, the girls went for the fun and rides at Six Flags and the Lady Birds did what comes naturally – shop at the local outlets with the strong Canadian dollar. The Dirty Birds had a fantastic start – defeating the Bajan Beach Bums from Barbados 4-0 and later defeating a strong Fremont XI team 4-0. Amid the various registration & umpire meetings on Friday evening, there was a tremendous sense of excitement among all teams and needless to say the hot tub and swimming pool were the gathering spots to make new friends. The Lady Birds started their competition schedule on Saturday 24th May with mixed results on the field but a lot of fun away from it. The competition was tough but the effort was there with strong performances from a number of players including Amanda Bush and Neelam Kumar. The young and upstart Canucks had a tough loss in their first game but rebounded strongly in their next few games. National Team member and coach of the Canucks, Scott Sandison, guided this enthusiastic U16 team to 3-2 record. The Dirty Birds had an easy romp over the US Junior National team winning comfortably 6-0. I don’t think that anyone even broke into a sweat. The Cal Cup banquet was a highlight with great music, good food and plenty of dancing for all the teams. The function was well attended and went well into the night. Sunday was an another tough day with close games for the ladies and some disappointment with the losses. Meanwhile the Dirty Birds played its strongest competition of the tournament and continued the winning streak with a gritty performance over the arch rival team from Argentina. The ‘Birds prevailed 1-0 with strong all round team performance and a superb winning goal from Mike Oliver. The parties started a little early for many teams that evening as a number of them were trying to drown their sorrows from the on field performances while the Dirty Birds were getting into the serious part of the competition. But not one to disappoint the locals and their hospitality, the team joined into the fun as well. Perhaps too much fun? The next morning, Dirty Birds lost the semi-final game against a relatively easier team and thus ended our hopes of winning the prize money. However, not to be outdone, the team did win the next game and came away with a bronze medal. The tournament finished too quickly and it was time to head to the airport and our flight home. A good time was had by all and there is always next year to look forward to and we will try once again to win it all!! Watch out for us in 2009! The team will re-group beginning July 4th for their final Olympic preparations. The Olympic athletes will be named on June 26th. The Women’s team has resumed training in Vancouver, working with Shiaz Virjee. Shiaz has been contracted on a parttime basis through mid September. Andrea Rushton, a veteran of the Women’s National Team with 114 caps, recently announced her retirement. Best of luck in the future, Andy! Cornershot Update Vol. 1, No. 8 page 16 June, 2008 Coaching Corner By Robin D’Abreo The next few editions of Coaching Corner will focus on ball control. BALL CONTROL - INDIAN DRIBBLE Use: Ball control and possible elimination of opponents Advantages: Ball position is continually changing thus preventing the defender from zeroing in on a predictable target / Harder to channel the forward effectively / Allows for rapid changes in direction Disadvantages: Limits the speed at which the forward can run with the ball. Grip: DRIBBLE: • • • Left hand at the top, with the “V” made between your thumb and forefinger going down the back face of the stick (this is key to allowing the ball to be dragged back and forth across the body) Right hand half way down with a loose grip allowing the stick to turn as needed in the right hand...the right hand does not turn over with the stick. Control of the stick is maintained primarily with the left hand. The right hand provides support and strength to the movement as needed. Ball Position: ball about a yard ahead of body will move back and forth across the body with short or long draws as needed Preparation: • Upright body and stick position allowing speed to be maintained • Eyes on the ball but with peripheral vision of the space and options ahead of the ball (split vision) Execution: • As player moves forward ball is moved across the body back and forth from R to L • Ball can start at right foot • As the ball moves across the body the left hand rotates the stick so that the ball is stopped on the L side of the body with the reverse stick (toe of the blade pointed down) … cont’d on p. 17 Cornershot Update Vol. 1, No. 8 page 17 June, 2008 Coaching Corner By Robin D’Abreo (cont’d) Execution (cont’d): • • • The ball is then drawn back across with the reverse stick from left to right As the ball moves across the L hand rotates the stick back to a forehand position allowing the ball to be stopped on the right side of the body Stick fakes over the ball at either end of the motion will add even more deception and increase effectiveness FHBC Partners Field Hockey BC is pleased to recognize the following three companies as official partners of Field Hockey BC: Big Kahuna Sports Company – Official Apparel Partner Adidas Canada – Official Team Clothing Partner AK Pro Canada – Official Equipment Partner Each of our partners offer the field hockey community significant discounts on a huge range of products.
