How to Weigh Websites
• Go Paperless to Save Trees and
Time
Who’s in charge of evaluating Internet content? You are. Since you
can’t automatically trust everything you see online, websites should be
viewed with some skepticism until you have judged their credibility,
accuracy, and timeliness. Here are some basic tips:
1. Evaluate the URL (website address).
Is the site associated with a known company or institution?
Or is it a personal site? In addition, you can check the letters
after the last period in the URL to see if the site originates
from an educational institution (.edu), government (.gov), or
foreign country (.au for Australia).
• Get the Most from Your NDTC TV
Service
• Play March Mania
In addition to websites, emails can also require some “detective
work” on your part. When you receive one containing a
story or offer that seems questionable, you can check out
its credibility on Snopes.com. This site tells the truth about
widely circulated emails.
2. Does it start with http or https?
Whenever you’re asked to enter personal or financial information
on a site, make sure that the URL starts with “https://” — this
stands for HyperText Transfer Protocol Secure. The word
“secure” refers to the fact that a secure socket layer (SSL) is
used for security purposes when transferring data.
4. Look for indicators of quality information.
Are the facts documented with authors, footnotes, or links to
original sources? When was the information last updated?
Are there links to sites that you know are reputable?
Cornerstone Group © 2016
3. Find out more about the source.
Read the webpages titled “About Us,” “Background,” or
“Philosophy” to determine any potential biases of the site.
Another resource is Alexa.com, which will allow you to
review the historical details of a site. Alexa.com shows the
owner how often the site is visited, a list of other sites that
link to it, and a visual history of webpages.

Notes from the
General Manager
This spring, NDTC will continue to invest in our fiber optic network by building out our
infrastructure in the rural areas of Harvey and New Rockford. Last year the customers
in Esmond and rural Devils Lake were connected to our fiber facilities.
NDTC, along with the majority of rural providers, is facing challenges in funding to provide
fiber optic services to our remaining customers. The majority of funding for these projects
is received from the Connect America Fund (CAF), which is administered by the Federal
Communications Commission (FCC). The reduction or redistribution of the CAF has
forced us to extend the time period required to complete these fiber projects.
We are committed to investing in our fiber optic network because we believe it will contribute to the economic vitality of our communities and allow us to provide you with
the latest communication services available today. We would like to be a 100% fiber
network, however, it will require some additional time to complete.
Dave Dircks,
General Manager
Thank you for your continued support. We truly value your business.
Here’s How We Gave Back in 2015
Giving back to the communities we serve has always been an important part of who we are at NDTC. Now
that 2016 is in full swing, we’d like to share some highlights of our community service activities last year:
NDTC’s Dollars In Motion donation program supports many
local entities, including Scholarships to 10 different high
school graduates in our serving area, Dollars for Scholars
and Relay for Life fundraisers, Parks and Recreation Departments, Fire Departments, Ambulance Services, Medical
Centers, Food Pantries, the Hope Center, and school-assisted
daycare programs.
In addition, NDTC employees participate in Denim Days.
This program allows them to wear jeans every Friday with
a participation cost of $1 per week. One hundred percent of
collected funds are then donated to local nonprofit charities.
In 2015, some of these included Supportive Services for Veterans Families (SSVF), Special Olympics, Fishing Has No
Boundaries, and the purchase of school supplies in the fall.
2
Our employees volunteer for organizations including school
sports clubs, FHA, 4-H, Service Clubs, and local Fire
Departments.
Thank you for your business as it helps us help them.
There are 5 Steps in the 8-1-1 Process
1. Notify your local one-call center by calling 8-1-1 or making an online request 48
hours before beginning any excavation (excluding Saturdays, Sundays, holidays, and the
day you call). The one-call center will transmit information to affected utility operators.
2. Wait the 48 hours for affected utility operators to respond to your request.
3. Confirm that all affected utility operators have responded to your request by
comparing the marks to the list of utilities the one-call center notified.
4. Respect the marks. The marks provided by the affected utility operators are your
guide for the duration of your project. If you are unable to maintain the marks during
your project, or the project will continue past your request’s expiration date (21 days in
ND), please call 8-1-1 to ask for a re-mark.
5. Dig carefully. If you can’t avoid digging near the marks (within 18-24 inches on
all sides, according to state law), consider moving your project to another part of the
property, if possible.
