Labor Day Weekend Reading
August 30, 2013 Labor Day Weekend Reading With the last long weekend of summer upon us, today’s edition of NTS MediaOnline Weekly again offers you a collection of news and items we came across this week that we believe are well worth noting. Whether you’re reading our regular Friday feature publication on your desktop at the office, on your smartphone on-the-go, on your tablet or laptop at the beach, or printed out on good old-fashioned paper, we’ve reduced the essence of these news-you-can-use items into snack size bites, while also giving you a ‘click to read more’ option throughout. Facebook Revises Contest Rules Radio stations and individual hosts should note that Facebook has changed its previous requirement that all contest and promotions be run through apps. The change of heart by Facebook -- reported by Ginny Marvin at MarketingingLand.com -- marks an about face for the social media giant that previously prohibited administrators from running a promotion or contest from their Page unless it was done via an app -- a rule that has been frequently ignored by tons of Facebook users. The following practices that were once banned per Facebook’s ‘Page Terms’ are now permitted: • Collect entries by having users post on the Page or Comment/Like a Page post • Collect entries by having users message the Page • Utilize Likes as a voting mechanism Motivation On A Budget Pretty much any good business management consultant will tell you that, no matter what business you are in, employee motivation plans and perks can greatly improve morale and productivity. An article posted by corporate website digital content writer Carla Turchetti via American Express’ OpenForum.com offers a number of good ideas for ways to inspire and motivate staffers through rewards. And while gift cards, happy hours and getting your birthday off are effective rewards, business speaker and author Barry Maher told Turchetti that there are also any number of other effective motivators that don’t cost a dime. “Business people understand they have to establish value when it comes to their customers, but what they sometimes forget is we have to establish value just as consistently when it comes to our people,” he said. “We all know our people can achieve more than they believe they can achieve, so show them that. Show them the vision you have for what they can become and what they can accomplish. If they think you have a high opinion of them, it’s amazing what they will do to maintain that opinion. And the more they respect you, the harder they will work to hang on to your regard.” Cooling A Hostile Workplace An online feature by Rachel Feintzeig for the Wall Street Journal points out that in today’s business world, where employees are forced to do more work with fewer resources, the resulting stress often results in ramped-up rudeness, uncivil behavior and a hostile work environment that can cost productivity and creativity. Certainly those working in the radio industry can relate, as budget cuts, the march of technology and staff reductions have resulted in more stress and strain on those staffers who are still fortunate enough to have a job. Here are just a few of the tips from a list compiled by Georgetown University School of Business Associate Professor Christine Porath on how to make your office environment more civil: • Always address performance or other employee issues in private • Consider implementing the “10/5 Rule” that says within ten feet of a co-worker acknowledge that person, and within five feet say ‘hello’ • Be careful about taking too much credit for collaborative work; share recognition for work well done • When dealing with conflict, performance issues, or other emotionally laden matters, use face-to-face communication in lieu of email ©2013 NTS MediaOnline™ — All rights reserved. A report on digital trends filed by Andrew Couts examines the recently launched JustDelete.me, a website that makes the whole process “a little less daunting” by providing a “growing list of Internet-connected services, with links and information about the account deletion process.” The new website places services into four categories -- easy, medium, hard and impossible, depending on the degree of difficulty for deleting your account from that service. Some samples: Google and Instagram fall into the ‘easy’ category, as users need only log in to delete their account. On the other hand, Craigslist falls into the ‘impossible’ column as it offers no way for a user to delete an account, not even by contacting the company’s customer service department. No ‘Phubbing’ Digital Goddess Kim Komando reports in a recent newsletter about a new ‘Stop Phubbing’ campaign that has gone viral. So, just what is phubbing? The host of the weekly Kim Komando Show reports that it’s the rather commonly seen habit of snubbing or ignoring someone who is with you face-to-face in favor of your smartphone. Kim says ‘phubbing’ is just one of a number of bad mobile manners that have evolved in our digital age, one she addresses in her 10 Commandments For Mobile Manners. Here are just a few of her rules for you and your mobile device to live by: • Thou shalt give priority to those who are with you. Don’t glue your eyes to your phone or tablet when you’re with friends or family. That sends the message that something else is more important than them. Focus on what they’re saying and keep the gadgets stashed away. • Thou shalt learn how to turn thy gadget completely off. Before you do anything else with a new gadget, learn how to turn it off completely. Then, turn it off when you’re in quiet, intimate settings. Churches, libraries, restaurants, movies, concerts, work and meetings all apply. • Thou shalt not cause light pollution. Shining a bright light in a dark room is a big distraction. When you’re in public, turn your screen brightness down as a courtesy. If you’re in a movie theater, don’t use your phone at all. Trust me; everyone behind you can see it. Good Rules For Email Although many people think that texting and social media have replaced email, the ubiquitous electronic service remains the most widely used form of communication online, especially in business. With that in mind, Alex Cavoulacos -- founder of The Muse -- recently posted her 23 Unwritten Rules of Email at Forbes.com. Here are a few samples of some rules that Cavoulacos says she’s developed over her many years of using email: • Keep every email as short as you can. It saves you time and, more importantly, respects the recipient’s time • The faster you respond, the shorter your response is allowed to be • Put your “ask” or “action items” first in the email, not last, and make them explicit. It should be immediately clear to the recipient what you want • Use “Reply All” only when truly needed. No one likes that person who clogs the whole department’s inbox • If you receive, or want to send, an angry email, wait on it. If it’s urgent, get on the phone instead Your feedback and comments about NTS MediaOnline Weekly are always welcome HERE Al Peterson 858.486.7559 al@ntsmediaonline.com Brooke Trissel 512.589.8568 brooke@ntsmediaonline.com ©2013 NTS MediaOnline™ — All rights reserved.
