Painter’s Palette Solids by Paintbrush Studio Quilt Designed by Linda Frost Pattern by Reeze L. Hanson 67” x 86” 901 E. 14th Avenue North Kansas City, MO 64116 (816) 421-2000 www.fabri-quilt.com Instructions Pieced Background 1. Cut all of the strips for the background using the Background Layout and Cutting List. Label each strip with color and size. 2. Sort strips into rows and label with the row number and order from top to bottom. 3. Assemble the strips into rows using a 1/4” seam. Press seams open. Label each row and place a pin or note at the top of each row. Completed strips should measure 86” long. 4. Pin rows together to avoid stretch and shifting while sewing. Sew strips together in pairs using a accurate 1/4” seam. Remove pins as you sew. Press all seams open to avoid bulk later when quilting. 5. Sew the pairs of rows together. Double check that you have rows paired correctly. To avoid curved strips, sew rows from the top to bottom, and then the next row from bottom to top. Alternate in this way as you assemble all the rows in the background. Always mark the top and bottom of each row to avoid confusion and ripping out long seams! 6. Continue to sew paired rows together. As the pairs get larger be sure to pin securely prior to sewing. The last seam should be the center seam as you join the two halves of the quilt background. Be sure to press as you go to keep your work flat and neat. Long narrow strips can be hard to handle. Pressing will make them easier to work with. Use a bit of starch or sizing to add some body to the fabric as you assemble strips and rows. This will also aid in handling narrow strips. 7. Press the quilt top and trim off the top and bottom of the quilt if necessary. Stay stitch the top and bottom of the quilt background 1/4” from the trimmed edge. 8. Layer the quilt, batting, and backing. Baste or pin layers together. 9. Quilt with long vertical lines approximately 1/4” apart using a neutral thread and your walking foot. Avoid stitching in the ditch between rows. Keep rows strait using your machine’s seam guide or the edge of your walking foot. 10. Bind the quilt using the 1/2 yard 001 midnight cut into eight 2-1/4” strips joined end to end with diagonal seams. Design by Linda Frost Pattern by Reeze L. There are approximately seven different kinds of butterflies on the quilt, with a few variations in size. I have provided you with several versions of each of the seven types of butterflies. You may adjust sizes up or down if you prefer. The types of butterflies are referred to by number (1-7) in the color layout chart and the template cutting chart. 2. Trace the butterfly templates onto the paper backing of the fusible web. Before you fuse the web to fabric, cut out the inside of each template leaving only 1/4” or less of fusible around the inside of the traced line. Label each template with fabric color, size, and type of butterfly. 3. Cut apart each template just outside of the traced lines. 4. Fuse templates onto the wrong side of the appropriate applique fabric. 5. Cut out each template on the traced lines. 6. On the right side of each template use a pencil or marking pen to lightly draw in the body lines and wing veins. Sample embellishment patterns for each type of butterfly are given on the template pages. 7. Position butterflies on the quilt using the color layout chart and cover photo. Positioning is approximate so move butterflies around to suit your own taste. There are 102 butterflies. 8. Fuse butterflies in place following the fusible web manufacturer’s instructions for iron temperature and time. 9. Mount the quilt on a frame or use your domestic machine to embellish each butterfly. If using a domestic machine, drop your feed dogs and use a quilting or embroidery foot. Load your machine with black thread on top and a dark neutral thread on the bottom. Test your stitch on a sample quilt sandwich and practice to decide how you want to embellish the butterflies. 10. Stitch around each butterfly just inside the outer edge to secure them in place. 11. Quilt lines for the body of the butterfly between the wings. Sew vein lines in the wings on the marked lines from step 6. Sew antennae above the head of each butterfly making a small circle or knot at the end of each antenna. Pebble-stitch (small circles) around the outside of each butterfly, securing the raw edges. Add additional embellishments to personalize your work. Design by Linda Frost Pattern by Reeze L.
