power elite feared Napoleon so much that his reign (1804-14, some of 1815), following that of
the revolutionary French government (1789-1804), had very few months of peace.

Waterloo was fought over the course of a long summer day on June 18, 1815. From 11am
until darkness fell, the French attempted to dislodge the allied forces, under Field Marshal
Wellington, from a defensive position which spanned several farms, a long ridge and a village.
It was a near-run thing, and might have gone Napoleon's way if the Prussian army, under
Field Marshal Blucher, had not arrived to turn the tide of battle.
This month we celebrate the triumphs and failures of Napoleon and his enemies, with our
biggest-ever sale of the era's figures and accessories, plus a new range of deeply-discounted
Waterloo playsets.You can see these on pages 7-8 and in color on our website
(www.toysoldierco.com). They're the culmination of several months' research, writing, photography and Photoshop retouching to bring the battle to life. There are three unique sets,
each of which can stand alone. But they were created with different mixes of manufacturer's
figures so that they can be combined into one grand battle set which represents the best
assortment of Napoleonic toy soldiers ever assembled.

The battle of Waterloo was fought throughout the day of June 18, 1815. Napoleon's infantry first tried, without success, to force its
way through the right flank of Wellington's allied position, manned by troops of the Anglo/Dutch/Belgian/Brunswick coalition. Then,
in mid-afternoon, Napoleon's field commander, "The Bravest of the Brave," Marshal Ney, believed he saw the allied line giving way
and the beginning of a general retreat. Hoping to capitalize on this, he sent in the largest cavalry attack of the era to destroy what
he believed to be a fleeing army. Instead, however, his 9,000 cavalrymen found themselves facing an array of steady regiments
of allied infantry, formed into defensive squares. The huge French force attacked over and over again for several hours, and even
threw in an infantry assault, but failed to break the allies. This playset is our biggest Napoleonic cavalry versus infantry set, and
features a huge assortment of unpainted plastic Napoleonic figures - including 135 French (81 of which are cavalry) and 268 British
and Brunswick Infantry by Airfix, Timpo, Dulcop, Marx and Hat. We also include 6 cannon. Except for the Marx Infantry and the
cannon this set is entirely different from the other two playsets in this range.

Napoleon planned to weaken Wellington's center by drawing more and more of his troops to reinforce the allied right flank. This
scheme appeared to be working. Taking advantage of the situation, the Emperor sent in a massive infantry attack on the allied center.
Wellington had formed up his British/Dutch/Belgian/Brunswick troops there, just behind a ridge. The French onslaught was conducted
by over 14,000 troops, formed into three giant columns, The French marched across the space between the two armies and climbed
the ridge, figuring to punch a hole through Wellington's thin line. It was a near run thing. The Anglo/Allied line poured volleys of
musketry into the French, and their artillery did massive damage, but the valiant Gallic forces pushed onwards. Just as it looked as
if the French would succeed, however, a large force of British cavalry appeared as if from nowhere, charging through the beleaguered
British/Allied troops and breaking Napoleon's great assault. The victorious British cavalry pushed the French infantry back to their
starting point but then they, too, badly misjudged their abilities. A French cavalry counter-attack decimated their numbers and the
battle for the center was over for the moment. This set features a great assortment of unpainted plastic Napoleonic figures - including
254 French (222 infantry and 32 cavalry, including Napoleon) and 186 British (134 Infantry and 52 Cavalry) by Airfix, Timpo, Classic
Toy Soldiers and Hat. We also include British and French flags, 9 cannon and a Dulcop 4-horse caisson set. - Except for the Timpo
Imperial Guard, Marx Infantry and cannon, this set is entirely different from the other two playsets in this range.

By the early evening, the beleaguered Anglo/Allied line was near the breaking point. Napoleon's massed artillery batteries were
tearing Wellington's army to shreds, and the French light troops were wearing down the remaining British/Dutch/Belgian/
Brunswick infantry with a constant hail of fire. Victory was in the air for the Emperor of the French. His vaunted Imperial Guard
had been in reserve all day, waiting for the order to make the decisive attack which would end the battle. But just as he was
planning his final assault on the weakened allied position, the vanguard of the Prussian army arrived on the French right flank.
Though exhausted after having marched all night, the Prussians initiated an attack. Unable to ignore the newly-arriving troops,
Napoleon was obliged to pare away more and more of his precious reserve regiments, the very ones he had been saving for
the final attack on Wellington's position. The battalions he dispatched to oppose the Prussians were the best troops in his army,
his Imperial Guard. At first they were able to hold off the Prussians. But as ever-increasing numbers of German troops entered
the fray, more and more of the French reserves were committed. The elite Guardsmen did their job, but this left Napoleon's final
attack so weakened that, for the very first time in all of his decades of campaigning, his beloved Guard broke and ran. The
British and Prussians pursued the fleeing remnants of the French army and forever ended Napoleon's reign. This playset
features Napoleon's elite troops facing off against Field Marshal Blucher's Prussians. This big assortment of unpainted plastic
Napoleonic figures includes 164 French Infantry and 20 French Cavalry, 200 Prussian Infantry and 52 Prussian Cavalry by
Timpo, Airfix, Armies in Plastic and Marx, plus accessories by Classic Toy Soldiers, Marx and BMC. - Except for the Timpo
