Brewing has always been seen as a
prestigious profession and beer has
always played a vital role in the drinks
sector.
Times have obviously changed but
beer has and always will remain a major
player.
Several decades ago – on an
international level, there was a new
move – to home brewing. This came
about mainly because of the growing
popularity of local beers.
Now there are home breweries, hobby
brewers and of course, on a different
level, the mini and microbreweries.
However, there is one thing they all
have in common – the passion to
brew a unique local beer with the best
ingredients and equipment available.

EILANDJE
A rich history
Several centuries ago lots of canals were
built on the Eilandje (islet). These were
later linked to the River Schelde and then
in the 16th century, Antwerp started
exporting beer.
On the Brouwersvliet – one such canal,
there were at least 16 breweries.
Originally water was supplied via a 7km
canal from a river north of Antwerp, as the
water from the Schelde was brackish.
Later, the ‘Waterhuis’ was built nearby to
provide them with good drinking water.
The Development of Beer in Antwerp
Carts made their way to the quayside with
their precious cargo.
The beer was loaded on to ships, which
sailed past the Waagnatie and down the
river Schelde on the way to their final
destination.
The ‘Waterhuis’ subsequently changed its
name to the ‘Brouwershuis’ and now serves
as a museum dedicated to the world of
beer
The choice of Waagnatie Expo & Events
as the location for BrouwPlus is therefore
in keeping with Antwerp’s rich brewing
tradition.
THE IDEAL LOCATION
A warehouse - an exhibition hall
The Waagnatie is a former warehouse on
the banks of the river, where ships used to
load and unload their cargo.
It is now used as a venue for exhibitions,
trade fairs, conferences, fashion shows,
concerts and more.
With over 5000 square metres of display
area you will be spoilt for choice –
everything you need to get brewing.
Waagnatie Expo & Events offers a unique
location, fascinating architecture, rich
history and plenty of parking – the
