The Cariboo region of BC’s central interior
has been profoundly shaped by gold, thanks
to a simple, working-class English prospector
named Billy Barker who, in 1862, spearheaded
a twenty-year, multi-billion dollar industrial
revolution that literally helped build a Province.

mer-long guests will have a chance to get up
close and personal with the man himself, Billy
Barker, as he graces the streets of his namesake town for the first time in nearly 150 years.
The extraordinary historic town of Barkerville,
named in Billy’s honour, now stands as a living testament to these golden beginnings.
Declared a National Historic Site of Canada
in 1923, and later a Provincial Heritage Site in
1958, Barkerville is now the largest authentic
heritage attraction in western North America.
Barkerville’s merchants, restaurants and
accommodations will provide you with everything you need for a genuinely comfortable
trip into our province’s golden past. Why not
come see for yourself?
Please join us for an eventful and educational 2014 season. Our newest exhibit,
The Canadian Claim and Gunn Hydraulic
Pit, officially opens on July 1st – Dominion
Day – and will provide Barkerville visitors
with a more comprehensive glimpse of mining life in the late-19th century as well as an
amazing top-down view of the entire town
site. Barkerville will also host its first ever
Aboriginal Celebration in July… and all sum-

In its heydey, Barkerville was the largest city
west of Chicago and north of San Francisco.
At the time it was said Vancouver and
Victoria wouldn’t amount to much because
they were too far from Barkerville. Today,
Barkerville remains a town of discovery, a
unique streetscape with more than 125 heritage buildings, live theatre and period merchants. There are several great places to
eat, gold rush style. As well, you can take
a shopping trip back in time at any of the
many shops in Barkerville. Old time shows and
demonstrations, along with all kinds of tours
and walk-in displays and an always surprising array of street entertainment will make
Barkerville the absolute highlight of your visit
