The name Kuah is a Malay word meaning ‘gravy’, referring to an ancient folklore of two battling giants who overturned a gigantic pot of curry at the spot where the town now stands. Once a rustic town with a few streets, present-day Kuah is a thriving centre of hotels and shoppingcum-business complexes, fortunately w ithout the din of modern-day cities. Kuah offers a wide variety of duty-free goods such as tobacco, liquor, cosmetics and electrical items at highlyattractive prices. EAGLE SQUARE or Dataran Lang is Langkawi’s most prominent landmark for visitors arriving via the sea. Situated near the Kuah Jetty, the main attraction of the square is the magnificent s tatue of the reddish brown eagle majestically poised for flight. According to local folklore, Langkawi derived its name from the eagle or helang. In old Malay, kawi denotes reddish brown, hence Langkawi means ‘reddish brown eagle’. The square is beautifully landscaped and features scenic ponds, bridges, covered terraces, restaurants and barrel vaults made of bricks. The square is b eautifully illuminated at night and presents a dramatic scene as you approach the island from the sea. 5 Crocodile Adventureland Cenang Map Cable Langkawi car To Seven Wells Waterfall Oriental Village Cable Car Berjaya Langkawi Beach & Spa Resort Padang Matsirat JALA Kok Beach Mutiara Burau Bay The Danna Langkawi J A L A N PA KO H N TA I NK U AL AT ER I AN G Sheraton Langkawi Beach Resort Burau Island One Hotel Helang Telaga Harbour Park PAD J A LA N A NG Beras Terbakar MA TSI RA T A KE NY UM One Hotel Helang MUD A i J AL AN PADA NG M AT S Langkawi International Airport JAL UL U M EL AK A Snake Sanctuary J A L A N U LU M E L A K SIMPA ALA N KU Four Points by Sheraton AN JAL JALA Langkawi Lagoon Resort NG HANDE K UR AN C JAL AN MA TA A I R AT A JA NB OH OR Laman Padi AN PA NT TE M PO NT PA * Map not drawn to scale E TU B M JA LA N 6 Epoi Island B U K IT UT Fave Hotel Holiday Villa Langkawi Beach Resort & Spa ENG AH TA I T Hospital Tengah Beach Tourist Information Centre Golf L AN N JA LAN P A Sport i Major Road Secondary Road Places of Interest BA AH NG I AL G A AN Airport Jetty Ferry Terminal Hill Hotel Kedawang JA TE EN Underwater World Langkawi LEGEND UB EL A H Kampung Temoyong Kampung Lubok Buaya CH Cenang Beach B AT YA K AI Rebak Besar Island Kampung Kedawang Kampung Ketapang AL Casa Del Mar Langkawi J LA N A Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa JAL J A L A N K E D A WA N G J A L A N K UALA MUD A Rebak Island Resort Langkawi RT A NG K U P Kampung Bukit Lembu STRAITS OF MALACCA Awana Porto Malai IR Kota Mahsuri JALA N Mutiara Burau Bay Lalang Island TAMAN LEGENDA OR LEGENDS PARK is a s cenic park with beautiful g ardens of vivid local blooms, plants and fruit trees.
