Fairfax County Area Profile Town of Herndon Two miles east of Washington Dulles International Airport and straddling the Dulles Toll Road (Route 267), the Town of Herndon is a dynamic office, retail and hotel center that has preserved its small-town character. The town blends the old and the new with a foundation that provides solid support for small, medium and large businesses. In addition to having a wide range of office space options, the town also is one of Fairfax County’s largest industrial/flex-space markets. Due to its proximity to Dulles Airport, the submarket has 10 hotels with more than 1,560 rooms. Major employers include Amazon Web Services, the Air Line Pilots Association, Boeing, Exelis, Harris Corporation, MicroPact, Northwest Federal Credit Union, Parsons Brinckerhoff and the federal government. The Center for Innovative Technology promotes technological innovation by linking businesses to Virginia colleges and universities and also houses the Mach37 cybersecurity business accelerator. Residents and employees have access to the nearby Wiehle-Reston East Metro station. In 2018, Metro’s Silver Line will be extended to Herndon, the airport and beyond, providing additional access to this area from the entire Washington, D.C., metro region. Town leaders are planning mixed-use development around the Herndon rail station. The Town of Herndon maintains a small-town charm with parks, a town green, recreation center, library and other community assets. Herndon’s historic downtown includes numerous restaurants and shops and is a venue for fairs and festivals throughout the year. Money magazine has named Herndon one of the “100 Best Places to Live” in the United States. FAST FACTS This town of 39,221 residents also boasts nearly 6 million square feet of office and more than 2 million square feet of industrial/flex space. This Dulles Corridor location is easily accessible via a network of major roadways, including the Dulles Toll and Access Roads (Route 267). Expected to open in 2018, the Herndon station on Metro’s Silver Line will provide access to Washington, D.C., the airport and beyond. The adjacent Washington Dulles International Airport is a major hub for air travel, with nonstop flights serving 83 domestic and 53 international markets.
