Welcome to Rowing Canada Aviron’s 34th Annual Awards
Banquet. Thank you for joining us this evening to recognize
the incredible achievements of our rowers, coaches,
umpires, volunteers and supporters! Tonight’s gala is a celebration of all of you who are the
lifeblood of our sport. We will also acknowledge those who
have won awards based on athletic performance or by
nomination from their peers. I salute each of you here this
evening for all your work as an athlete or by giving so
tirelessly of your time and energy to keep Canadian rowing
proud and strong. Please enjoy the evening.

THE BOBBY PEARCE AWARD
JUNIOR FEMALE SCULLER OF THE YEAR
Bobby Pearce of the Leander Rowing Club won the Diamond
sculls at the 1931 Henley Royal Regatta and Gold Medals at
the 1928 and 1932 Olympic Games for his native country,
Australia. He moved to Canada, turned professional and was
never beaten as an amateur or professional champion.

OTTAWA ROWING CLUB
Louise receives this award for accumulating the highest total
of points from competing at the Royal Canadian Henley
Regatta, the 2014 RBC National Rowing Championships and
the Rowing Canada Aviron Spring Trials. THE JACK GUEST AWARD
JUNIOR MALE SCULLER OF THE YEAR
Jack Guest of the Don Rowing Club won the Diamond sculls
at the 1930 Henley Royal Regatta and a Silver Medal at the
1928 Olympic Games in partnership with Joe Wright Jnr.

VICTORIA CITY ROWING CLUB
Patrick receives this award for accumulating the highest total
of points from competing at the Royal Canadian Henley
Regatta, the 2014 RBC National Rowing Championships and
the Rowing Canada Aviron Spring Trials. FEMALE SCULLER OF THE YEAR
DEBORAH SNELL
UNIVERSITY OF VICTORIA ROWING CLUB
Deborah receives this award for accumulating the highest
number of first place finishes at Royal Canadian Henley
Regatta and highest finishes of a non-national team athlete
at the 2014 RBC National Rowing Championships.
THE KIRAN VAN RIJN AWARD
MALE SCULLER OF THE YEAR
In memory of Kiran van Rijin, a much admired and well
loved athlete who represented Canada at a FISA World Cup
in 2001 in the double sculls.
MIHAILO MALOWANY
ST. CATHARINES ROWING CLUB / BROCK ROWING CLUB
Mihailo receives this award for accumulating the highest
number of first place finishes at Royal Canadian Henley
Regatta and highest finishes of a non-national team athlete
at the 2014 RBC National Rowing Championships.

UNIVERSITY OF WESTERN ONTARIO BOAT CLUB
Cameron receives this award on his nomination to the
awards committee based on Cameron’s results in 2014,
which include a Henley Gold, and his improvement over the

Julie and Martha receive this award for accumulating the

TONY ZASADA AWARD
Established in memory of Tony Zasada of the Regina Rowing
Club, fifth in the coxed pair event at the 1984 Olympic Games,
by his family and friends. LARISSA WERBICKI
SASKATOON ROWING CLUB
Larissa receives this award for scholastic and
athletic performances in 2014 which include
winning both the Senior Women and Senior Women 63kg Single Scull at the CSSRA
Championship Regatta as well as being a member of Canada’s Junior Women’s Pair
which won silver at the 2014 World Rowing Junior
Championships and bronze at the 2014 Nanjing Youth

UMPIRE OF THE YEAR
This Award recognises the contribution of an Umpire who
has made an exemplary contribution to rowing racing in
Canada, particularly in the immediate past season/year.
SANDRA KIRBY
MANITOBA ROWING ASSOCIATION
Sandra Kirby is a member of the Rowing Canada Aviron Umpire Committee and was
elected to and now is Chair of the Umpire
Education and Development sub-committee
of the Umpire Committee. In 2014, Sandra
was selected to the umpire jury for the 2014
World Rowing Masters Championships in
addition to umpiring numerous local, regional and national
regattas, including umpiring at the Alma Coastal Regatta with
a view to bring coastal rowing to Manitoba. UMPIRE OF THE YEAR

TIM HENDERSON
ROWING BC
Tim Henderson has served over 20 days at
local regattas in 2014, keeping to his annual
average over the last six years.
VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARD
This Award is presented to an individual who has made an
exemplary contribution to the sport through a particular
piece of work or initiative that has made a significant impact
on the rowing community, particularly in the immediate past
season/year. BOB HUMPHREY
SUDBURY ROWING CLUB
Bob started rowing in 1992 as a 40- something adult to make up a recreational
four with a couple of friends, and
immediately was a valuable volunteer with
the Club. Bob has been instrumental in keeping the club fleet seaworthy and
bringing some creativity to that field. Utilising his professional
skills, Bob engineered the stern and bow of a damaged eight
to make a rowing pair!

SOUTH NIAGARA ROWING CLUB
Scott has gone over and above the
average parent volunteer taking on the
daunting task of maintaining the club's
grounds and non-rowing equipment. COACH OF THE YEAR
This Award is presented to a Club/University Coach of para
or able bodied rowers who has produced outstanding
crews or individual athletes at the provincial and national
competitive level in the immediate past season/year and
has the respect of their athletes and peers. JOHN HAVER
SASKATOON ROWING CLUB
John coached three athletes who were major
contributors to the most successful summer in Saskatchewan Rowing Association's history. John coached Larissa
Werbicki into Canada’s JW2- and with
Caileigh Filmer of Victoria City Rowing Club, John lead the crew
to international podiums. John also coached Sierra Bronkhorst
who represented Canada in the BW2- at the World Rowing U23
Championships.

OTTAWA ROWING CLUB
In 2014, Ed coached crews to wins at Royal
Canadian Henley Regatta, Canadian University
Rowing Championships as well as having one
athlete win gold and silver for Canada at the Commonwealth
Rowing Championships.
THE PRESIDENT’S AWARD
The President’s Award is awarded at the sole discretion of the
President of RCA and will consider those who are deserving
of special recognition for significant contributions or
