On December 17, 2010, our dear friend, Ed, lost his battle with cancer and went joyfully to live with the Lord. He was survived by his son and daughter and his wife of 45 years, Liz. His obituary paid tribute to this dear man including not only his time in the service in the U.S. Army alongside Elvis Presley, his service as a Butler County A.S.A. umpire and midget football referee, but also his service as an umpire for the Cranberry CUP. Hot Seafood Dinners, Appetizers, Desserts, Lattes, Frappes, Egg Platters, Fish Sandwiches, Burgers and much more! What many do not know is that Eddie expressed a last wish in early December to ump one more Cranberry CUP game. Cathy and the CUP team moved quickly to make this happen with the assistance of Joe Jordano, the Head Baseball Coach at the University of Pittsburgh. Plans were under way to put together an indoor game to make this wish come true so that Eddie could ump one more game with his dear friend, Gary. Sadly, Eddie passed the week after making his wish, much sooner than anyone expected. Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote a beautiful song called “Love Changes Everything” and in Rewards Program the lyrics, we remember Eddie. It says: Party Trays “Love changes everything. Hands and faces, earth and sky. Love, love changes everything. How you live and how you die.” Soups To-Go Special Occassion Menu Cancer Society and two of our favorite umpires were Follow Us Everywhere! www.freedomsquarediner.com Facebook us or Visit us on Twitter! Today, we remember the love in which Ed lived and the grace in which he died. They will do more for our entire community than we will do for them. They remind the community that at any time life can take a drastic turn and they show us what real courage is all about and remind us to always keep our priorities in line and appreciate all that we have and love. I have asked the Board members to write down their thoughts about why they volunteer to make a difference with the Cranberry CUP. Please find submissions from other board members on page 6. For me, it is seeing tremendous relief in the eyes of those we help and how much they, and their families, appreciate and treasure the memories of this event. 4 Please make check payable to: “Cranberry CUP” Tax ID# 061721450 Mail check and sponsor sheet to: Cranberry CUP PO Box 1614 Cranberry Twp., PA 16066 If you live in a neighborhood in Cranberry competing for the “Neighborhood Fund Championship” PLEASE HELP: The Cranberry CUP may be held in August, but the organization welcomes donations any time of the year. I take a lot of pride knowing that I, along with a lot of other great people, help make it happen. From the first tee off at golf on Friday to the closing ceremony on Sunday, the CUP is truly a unifying cause. Robin Shaffer My interest in the CUP comes from the fact that I believe in it. I believe in the unity it brings to our community, the outreach it affords to those in need and, above all, the affirmation that compassion still exists within each person who has ever had anything to do with raising money for those who are struggling in life. Nancy Hans Being involved with the Cranberry CUP and a serving as board member is like playing the game BINGO. You never know, what each year is going to bring. The hardships that some families face is heartbreaking but it warms my heart to see first-hand what a community can do. That is a BINGO for each Inspirational Family! Matt Irvin As a new member of the CUP board, I am excited to be part of such a generous and caring organization. The CUP does great things for families in the area and helps bring the community together. I am eager to see what great things the organization can contribute in the future. Sheila Mills One of the things I love most about the CUP is the sense of community it provides to Cranberry. Whether the Inspirational Family comes by helicopter or fire truck to the Opening Ceremony, it is a always an emotional moment and I feel grateful to be a part of it. Bob Gillenberger, Jr. I enjoy being a part of the Cranberry CUP for many reasons, but the one reason that stands out is how the CUP brings the community together for a common purpose. I look forward to continuing to serve the CUP and to help ensure that the spirit of the CUP continues for years to come. Chris Corcoran It’s hard to believe it’s been 12 years since I first sat across from Cathy Cortazzo at her dining room table at the very first planning meeting for the CUP. Serving on the board as we aim to hit the million dollar mark 12 years later is both inspiring and gratifying! Mike Leon Going to the Opening Ceremony over the years moved me so much I decided to join the CUP board. The organization has helped so many people over the years it makes me proud to live in Cranberry. This event has brought my neighborhood much closer; I hope in the future we can get even more neighborhoods to join us for this weekend of giving and camaraderie. 6 27 We’ll knock it out of the park. They are the proud parents of 4 children: Nathan, age 10; Alex, age 7; Brayden, age 3 and Mia, 1. In May 2010, Shawn, a Social Studies teacher at Keystone Oaks and a Driving Education Instructor for Seneca Valley school district, was diagnosed with stage 4 incurable colon and liver cancer. In the summer of 2010, Shawn needed 24 hour care as he was unable to walk or bathe unassisted. The doctors did not think he would survive the summer, but with the help of hospice nurses, hospice caregivers and family members, Shawn was able to regain his independence by September. He rebounded with the help of 16-hour IV nutrition and many prayers from family and friends. Unfortunately, Shawn’s latest scan showed that the cancer has spread to a spot on his right hip and to a lymph node. Shawn’s doctors do not feel he will ever return to work. He will continue to have bi-weekly chemotherapy treatments for the rest of his life. Shawn has been active in coaching for SV outdoor soccer and CTAA T-ball and baseball. He also volunteered in a CTAA winter skills baseball camp. He is a past participant of the Cranberry CUP softball tournament. THANKS! We couldn’t do it without you! Every year since 2000, the CUP has turned to our men and women in blue for the tough job of keeping things fair and upright on the ball field. These are men and women who have families and plenty of other things they could be doing this weekend. But they look to the cause and volunteer their time to make the CUP one of the greatest philanthropic community events of summer in Western Pennsylvania. They stand in the beating sun giving their best, hour after hour, game after game, and day after day and they do it with hearts of gold! So, as you continue your quest for the CUP, when you have a close call, remember why they volunteer their time. Remember the irony of this weekend is that we play this game to remember that the game is not important. It’s what we do with the game that’s important. God bless our inspirational families and God bless our umpires for a job well done. Thanks, Blue! This success is due entirely to the dedication of volunteers and the generosity of individuals, neighborhoods, businesses and government agencies. The CUP currently raises money through registration fees, raffle ticket sales, individual and business contributions, and corporate sponsorships. Many individuals and companies also donate essential products and services, or provide them at a reduced rate. A brief look back follows. 2000 – Seven neighborhoods competed in the first Cranberry CUP Softball Tournament to raise $3,800 for the American Cancer Society. 2001 – Fourteen neighborhoods raised $14,000 for the Children of JoEllen MaughnEvanson Scholarship Fund. The first female police officer in Cranberry Township died after a long battle with cancer. The event featured the addition of the now annual Kick-Off Party. 2002 – Local businesses and government agencies entered their first teams in the Softball Tournament. Twenty-three neighborhood and four business/government teams raised $23,500 for Pennsylvania State Trooper Bob Newton, who was suffering from a rare form of cancer. 2003 – Thirty neighborhood and 12 business/government teams raised $40,000 to offset medical costs for Kayla Sansone. The 13-year-old cancer patient passed away three months later in November. 2004 – Thirty-six neighborhood and 12 business/government teams raised $55,000 for Alex Poust, 15. Alex died on December 3, before he was well enough to travel to Texas for a bone marrow transplant. 14 19 2010 CRANBERRY CUP WINNERS 2005 – The CUP held the first of what is now the annual Golf Classic. Twenty-three neighborhood and 13 business teams competed in the Classic. The CUP raised $75,000 to help with medical costs for seven-year- old Isabella Christenson and nine-year-old Dakota Dore. 2006 – The Cranberry CUP raised more than $140,000 (including a $40,000 donation from the Rick Restelli Cancer & Heart Foundation) to help the Sherri and Doug Maybee family as well as seven other local families. Sherri has medical conditions that prevent her from working. The CUP was able to purchase a new home for the family. 2007 – For the first time, the Cranberry CUP acquired sponsors for all three major components of the CUP weekend – the Golf Classic, Kick-Off Party and Softball Tournament. In addition, the CUP expanded its geographic boundary to include potential beneficiaries from within the entire Seneca Valley School District. More than $115,000 was raised. The primary beneficiary was the Robert (Bob) Giebel family of Harmony. Bob, who is unable to work because he has multiple sclerosis, lost his wife to cardiac arrest in February 2007. CUP proceeds helped Bob pay off his mortgage and replace a structurally unsafe garage. 2008 – Thirty-nine foursomes (156 participants) competed in the Golf Outing. The KickNorthridge Estates - Open Division CUP Champs 2010 off Party was attended by approximately 450 people. Thirty-six neighborhood teams from Cranberry Township along with twenty-four business teams, representing more than 1,000 participants and over 20,000 residents, competed in the softball tournament. The Opening Ceremony was attended by more than 2,000 people. The 2008 events raised more than $115,000 and the Cranberry CUP was able to provide financial assistance and emotional support to families within our community. 2009 – A Decade of Giving! More than $117,000 was raised to benefit the Jimmy Barbarino family. The CUP helped the Inspirational Family complete their new Habitat for Humanity home. Thirty-four foursomes competed in the Golf Outing. The Kick-off Party was attended by nearly 500 people at the Cranberry Highlands Golf Course on Friday night. 32 Neighborhoods and 21 corporate teams competed in the softball tournament, during our first rainy weekend in 10 years! Additionally, due to the long-standing success of the CUP, additional funds were available to provide financial assistance and emotional support to other families within our community during the holidays. 2010 – The Surman Family (Eric, Laura, Aiden, Gavin and Camryn)– was selected as the Hunters Creek South - Neighborhood CUP Champs 2010 18 Inspirational Family. More than $135,000 was raised during our events. We also donated $1000 each worth of gifts to six families in need from Seneca Valley School District during the holidays. During this year, we also established 2 scholarships for high school seniors: one scholarship for volunteerism and the other in honor of Megan O’Shea Durst for work with children with disabilities. 15 SOUTHRIDGE NEIGHBORHOOD WINNER’S BRACKET 2011 CP4 SAT 8 AM N1 OAKVIEW CP1 SAT 1:30 PM N7 CREEKWOOD WINCHESTER LAKES F IEL D# CP1 SAT 7:15 PM N25 CP1: CP2 SAT 1:30 PM N8 TIMBERLINE CP5 SAT 8 AM N2 CRANBERRY HEIGHTS GPI SUN 10:30 AM N33 KIMBERWICKE CP5 SAT 1:30 PM N9 HUNTER’S CREEK SOUTH LO CATIO N CRANBERRY PARK FIELD 1 (HR = DOUBLE) CP2: CRANBERRY PARK FIELD 2 (HR = DOUBLE) CP4: CRANBERRY PARK FIELD 4 CP5: CRANBERRY PARK FIELD 5 (HR = DOUBLE) GPH: GRAHAM PARK FIELD H (HR = DOUBLE) GPI: GRAHAM PARK FIELD I GPJ: GRAHAM PARK FIELD J GPL: GRAHAM PARK FIELD L (HR = DOUBLE) CP1 SAT 11 AM N3 CROSSINGS CP2 SAT 7:15 PM N26 PINEHURST CP4 SAT 1:30 PM N10 GPI SUN 2:30 PM N39 HUNTER’S CREEK NORTH ST.
