With a lot of the Scottish team at their competitive peak, there were many, truly exceptional performances. Prior to that, swimming has won an average of four medals at each previous Games. This year’s team is an exciting blend of youth and experience and reflects the rebuilding phase of the sport towards Glasgow 2014. Amongst those named are David Carry and Caitlin McClatchey, both double gold medallist from Melbourne who set the Scotland team alight, both winning gold on the first day of the competition, beating the home favourites Australia in their own back yard. Also part of the 2006 swim team were Robbie Renwick, Kris Gilchrist and Andy Hunter who all won relay medals and will be looking to repeat their medal winning performances in Delhi. Inverurie’s Hannah Miley made her Commonwealth Games debut in 2006 at just 16 years old, where she finished an impressive 4th in her favoured 400m individual medley. Hannah has gone from strength to strength since then and is now a force on the international swimming scene. She has broken numerous Scottish, British and Commonwealth records along the way, as well as the European record for both the 200m and 400m IM which had stood for over eight years. At 4:31.33 Hannah’s best 400m IM time is now a staggering 16.62 seconds faster than her final swim in Melbourne and she is currently world ranked number four in this event. Kerry Buchan also made her Commonwealth debut in Melbourne and was a gold and silver medallist from the 2004 Commonwealth Youth Games. Beijing Paralympian, Sean Fraser will be Scotland’s sole representative in the Para- Sports events in the pool, whilst 27 year old Lauren Smith, based as part of the British programme in Aldershot, qualifies in the synchronised swimming – solo event. Congratulating the team, Michael Cavanagh, Chairman of Commonwealth Games Scotland said: “I am absolutely delighted to welcome the 21 athletes to Team Scotland. The swimmers got us off to a fantastic start in Melbourne and I am sure this exciting combination of familiar and new faces can rise to the challenge and perform to their very best in Delhi. With their selection confirmed, I hope they can now focus over these next two months on their final preparations that will put them in the best possible shape for the Games.” Jon Doig, Team Scotland Chef de Mission added: “All the swimmers can feel rightly proud that they have been named as part of Team Scotland. This is the first step to achieving their goals in Delhi and all the support staff look forward to ensuring they have every opportunity to excel at the Games.” Scottish Swimming, Chief Executive Officer, Ashley Howard said: “Scottish Swimming is delighted for the athletes selected for the Commonwealth Games in Delhi. The team reflects a true blend of senior and youth swimmers – precisely the mixture we were aiming for as we take a long term view and prepare for success in Glasgow in 2014. We are confident we have selected a strong group of swimmers who are all up for the challenge of this major competition. Undoubtedly medals will be hard to come by, with the margins between those who win medals and those who don’t getting even smaller. Our overall target for Delhi is six medals, five in swimming and one from diving or synchro, which is a tall order at what will be a very challenging Games. However, we believe we have the right team in place with the best opportunity to deliver against our Delhi target and Scottish Swimming wishes the team well in their final preparations.” Ally Whike, Scottish Swimming’s Director of Performance added: “We are very proud of the swimmers who have achieved selection for Team Scotland and we look forward to having everyone together in Doha for a holding camp in September prior to travelling onwards to Delhi. We are also delighted for the coaches who have played such a pivotal leadership role in supporting their athletes’ selection success. Over the last 10 years, with investment from our key partner, sportscotland, we have been able to support a strong coaching pathway in Scotland. Our nation now boasts of 25 full time paid swimming coaches and is underpinned by a strong coach education and mentoring philosophy. It is our coaches and this coaching pathway which we believe will deliver sustained success for swimming in Scotland, with our long term sights set on success in Glasgow, 2014 and beyond.” Eight of the Scottish swimmers selected will soon head off to Budapest for the European Championships 4-15 August and will benefit from racing against some high level competition, the ideal warm-up for the Commonwealth Games in Delhi. Selections for diving are still to be confirmed and will be announced on 18 August 2010. 2 Commonwealth Games Team Meeting The Scottish National Championships was the last chance for swimmers to qualify for nomination to the team that will represent Scotland at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in October. This drove many swimmers to achieve personal bests and season bests, but for an unfortunate few this still saw them agonising fractions of a second away from the times they needed. By the end of the meet the squad of swimmers with nomination times stands at sixteen. On Sunday 27th of June the squad gathered for a team dinner where they where congratulated on making that all important step and encouraged to look forward to the challenges that the Games will bring. David Carry, double gold medallist at the last Commonwealth Games (Melbourne 2006) spoke to the rest of the squad passing on words of encouragement. On the following day presentations were made to the group by Performance Director Ally Whike, Aquatics Team Manager Derna Campbell, and Scottish National Coach Doug Campbell. There will be a Team Scotland meeting on 4th September at the University of Stirling, where kit distribution will take place, information will be disseminated to all athletes and staff and final pep-talks will be given by Jon Doig and other Scotland Commonwealth Games Staff. The next time the full squad reunite will be in the pre-Games holding camp in Doha where the swimmers will prepare for what, for many of them, will be the most important swim of their lives. The Commonwealth Games Closing Ceremony, which the Handover Ceremony is part of, is the event that concludes the Commonwealth Games. It will be the first public statement to the world that Glasgow will become the next Host City, inviting the Commonwealth to Glasgow in four years time. The performance, which will involve a mass choreographed dance routine, will take place in the spectacular Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and will host a capacity crowd of 60,000 for the closing ceremony. It will be beamed live across the Commonwealth to an estimated audience of 1 billion people. Dawn and Tina have both been members of the Orkney Amateur Swimming Club for fifteen years. Now age 24, and 22, still swim competitively for their club at local, district and national level. Both also contribute to the development of their club by coaching young squad swimmers. They were nominated by the Orkney Amateur Swimming Club, then chosen by the Orkney Islands Council to represent Scotland. Both say they are looking forward to the experience of participating in the Commonwealth Games Handover Ceremony in Delhi, commenting on it as a “chance of a lifetime”. British Gas Masters and Senior Age Group Championships Young Volunteers Two Scottish Young Volunteers played their part at this years British Gas Masters and Senior Age Group Championships event held at Tollcross, Glasgow on the 18-20 June 2010. Scott Milne (Perth City SC) and Katie Waugh (Teviotdale ASC) were asked by British Swimming to assist in the event by handing out goodie bags and general volunteering duties. Both Scott and Katie enjoyed helping out at the event and had the opportunity to speak to the competitors, organisers and other volunteers. When Scott was asked to say what his highlight of the event was he stated: “Truth be told it is very hard for me to decide which part is the highlight of the event from start to finish as I enjoyed every minute of it. If I was to choose one thing which did stand out most it would have to be the fact that it was a British National event where people from all over Britain would come to compete and that I was part of it.” Katie recommends volunteering as “It is a great opportunity to be involved with an important event, it also makes you appreciate the work that goes into running these events smoothly.” The event organiser Katie Bird was very pleased with the assistance that Scott and Katie gave during this event and said: ‘”They did a great job at the weekend and would definitely make great volunteers for future events.” Both Scott and Katie currently volunteer with their clubs and are great ambassadors for future young people who volunteer. If you are interested in volunteering speak to your local club to find out what opportunities are available or contact volunteering@scottishswimming.com 5 Scottish Open Water Championships Results Men's 5 km The British Gas Scottish Open Water Swimming Championships took place on Saturday 24th July at Lochore Meadows Country Park in Fife. While doing their normal training at Portobello Swim centre in Edinburgh during the February mid term holiday, Michael Pinsky videoed them. Pinsky is known for his art installations, and had previously filmed at other swimming baths in Manchester and London. Pinsky animates and digitally elaborates/multiplies the images to make an interesting image on the surface of Portobello Swimming Pool. This art installation was the first commission by “Big Things on the Beach” for Portobello, in 2010. Big Things on the Beach is a public art trust in Portobello and is a collaboration of the City of Edinburgh Council and the Scottish Arts Council and aims to attract artists both established and emerging to show their works for a temporary period of time. The 15 minute looped show was projecting onto the surface of the water for 6 nights at Portobello pool in April and attracted many visitors who were inspired and amazed by the spectacle. One family who attended the event were noted on the webpage as saying “We really loved the whole idea and it actually inspired our three year old daughter and now she wants to learn to swim.” For more information on Big things on the beach visit bigthingsonthebeach.org.uk Above: The girls preparing for a link with arms joined Eilidh Richardson, 100’s of images in a circular movement 9 East Dunbartonshire welcomes ‘Splish’ and ‘Splash’ Kellogg’s Scottish Swimming Awards are delighted to announce the welcome arrival of two new additions to the team – real life “Splish” and “Splash” mascots!
