Tuesday, September 8 Monday, October 5—Semi-Annual Meeting 7:00 PM Tuesday, October 13 Tuesday, November 10 Monday, December 7—Annual Meeting 7:00 PM Tuesday, December 8 (subject to change) GREENS AND GROUNDS The summer is flying by, so take advantage of the great golfing weather we have left. The course has held up well considering the extreme weather we have had this season. As I visit other courses, I am reminded of how fortunate we are to have soils that drain relatively well. We will be removing the large willow behind the green on hole number two for safety. We will also remove the maple left of the green on hole thirteen. The tree has lost two large leaders in the past year and has become a liability issue. It will be sad to see it go as it is the oldest tree on the property by many accounts. If time and weather conditions allow, we hope to do Wayne Hills News / Volume 56/ No. 4 / September 2015 some other projects this fall. The back half of the bunker on 10 will be filled in and the white sand will be used to build two smaller bunkers at 17 fairway. It is the last brown sand bunker on the back nine and is visible from the road. The real bunker sand will help make the hole play as it was intended. We will continue reducing the size and replacing sand in the front nine bunkers in the coming years as time and resources permit. Two new forward tees will be built on 2 and 18. All the forward tees will be rated for the start of play next season. I have seen many people playing it forward this year, and hopefully many more next year with a proper course rating for competitions. We will be over seeding the forward tees we created this year to improve the turf that is there. Fairway spots that died during the floods and heat this summer will also be over seeded. We plan to clean out the ditches and the edges of the ponds before winter to help move more water through the course. We will also be pruning many of the lower limbs of trees that naturally decline as they mature. Late this fall and in the winter, we will continue removal of dead and dying trees. The Austrian pines and fir trees make up most of the approved removal list. The highest priority will be trees that are a safety issue. The course will be closed for greens aeration on September 14 and 15 with alternate rain dates on September 21 and 22. Aerating earlier than we have in the past will allow greens time to heal fully before winter. A huge thank you goes out to Steve Felker and Fred Arliss for all their help with storm cleanup! Remember to repair ball marks and use cart paths around greens and tees. When divots cannot be replaced, fill the divot with sand all the way to the top and step it down level. If there is only a little sand in the bottom of a divot and grass seed germinates, it leaves an uneven surface. Thanks to all that fill extra divots on tees and fairways, it is a big help. See you on the golf course! —Todd VanKouwenberg, Golf Course Superintendent 2 Tee Times must be made if you are planning to come out and play.
