BOULDER PUBLIC LIBRARY cultural events FREE CINEMA, CONCERTS, DANCE, EXHIBITS Sept-Oct, 2015 © Universal Pictures CINEMA It’s like Déjà Vu All Over Again Back to the Future II Wednesday, October 21, 4:29 p.m. EXHIBIT Beginnings of Eternity: Ancient Egypt’s Old Kingdom October 17-25 in the Canyon Gallery This exhibition is a collection of replicas of artifacts from the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, and from the private collection of various members of the local Egyptian Study Society. Various prints and paintings will also be on display. The exhibit provides a broad look into the lives of ancient Egyptians, their world, historical events, and beliefs. A symposium, (www.egyptstudy.org/index.php/beginnings-of-eternity Cost: $45) will take place October 17-18 at the main library. Various free family programs are also scheduled, such as The Basics of Mummy Making, Write with Hieroglyphs and Sugar Cube Pyramids (http://bplnow.boulderlibrary. org/event/steam). Directed by Robert Zemeckis, featuring Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Thomas F. Wilson (1989). In this sequel to Back to the Future, Marty McFly and Doc Brown make a visit to Hill Valley, California on October 21, 2015 at 4:29 p.m. to resolve a few problems for the future McFly family. But when they return home, they soon discover someone has tampered with time to produce a nightmarish Hill Valley, 1985. Their only hope is to once again get back to 1955 and save the future. (108 min.) The Seers perform songs by Huey Lewis & the News and other bands of the 1980s at 6:30 p.m. on the library plaza in the civic area. CINEMA All Hallows’ Eve Cannibal! The Musical Monday, October 26, 6 p.m. Directed by Trey Parker, featuring Juan Schwartz, Toddy Walters, Matt Stone, Ian Hardin, Stan Brakhage (1993). This is the true story of the only person convicted of cannibalism in America—Alferd Packer (according to Colorado lore). The sole survivor of an ill-fated trip to the Colorado Territory, he tells his side of the harrowing tale to news reporter Polly Pry as he awaits execution. His story goes like this: while searching for gold and love in the Colorado Territory, he and his companions lost their way and resorted to unthinkable horrors, including toe-tapping songs! (95 min.) One piece of each artist’s work is on display in the gallery in a delightful show which will help parons choose their favorites. Purchase the tour map at retailers around the Front Range. An artist reception takes place Friday, October 2, in the gallery. Set in Kerala, south India, the film features four stories about women, from different social classes, who struggle to define themselves within a traditional, male-dominated society. Monday, October 5, 6 p.m. Nixon Throughout Richard Nixon’s presidency, three of his top White House aides, Bob Haldeman, John Ehrlichman and Dwight Chapin obsessively documented their experiences with Super 8 home movie cameras. This is an all-archival documentary presenting their home movies for the first time, along with other rare footage, creating an intimate and complex portrait of the Nixon presidency as never seen before. Doris’s Sunday Matinee Duck Directed by Roy Rowland, with Tommy Rettig, Hans Conried, Peter Lind Hayes, Mary Healy (1953). A boy who hates taking piano lessons and practicing dreams of his piano teacher as an evil genius who keeps five hundred boys imprisoned to play his music on a huge two-tiered serpentine piano. Co-written by Dr. Seuss (Theodore Geisel). Geisel had such a hard time during the making of the motion picture that he said he wouldn’t talk about it until after his death. To rescue the small country of Freedonia from bankruptcy, Mrs. Teasdale agrees to donate 20 million dollars if Rufus T. Firefly is appointed president. Firefly attempts to win the hand of Mrs. Teasdale, as does Ambassador Trentino of the neighboring country, Sylvania. When the two leaders cannot resolve their dispute over the wealthy dowager, war between the countries is declared, and Mrs. Teasdale’s house comes under attack. (68 min.)
