“HAPPY FEAST DAY EVERYONE!”
This coming week, on July 25th, we will celebrate the feast
of our parish patron, St. James the Greater.
In the New Advent Catholic Encyclopedia we read the
following about our patron saint, “James the son of Zebedee
and his brother John were among the twelve disciples of
Our Lord. They, together with Peter, were privileged to
behold the Transfiguration, to witness the healing of Peter's
mother-in-law and the raising of the daughter of Jairus, and
to be called aside to watch and pray with Jesus in the
garden of Gethsemane on the night before His death.

ST. JAMES RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
(516) 796-2979
The Religious Education Office is closed and will re-open on Wednesday, September 3, 2014.
REFLECTING ON THE WORD (from Sadlier Publications) Matthew 13:24-43
Question of the Week: Where do you see seeds of faith in your culture?
Where do you see weeds?
In the gospel reading, Jesus is determined that his disciples will understand how the kingdom grows in
their midst. So he tells the parable of the weeds in the wheat field. The sower (Jesus) allows both the
wheat (those who work for God's kingdom) and the weeds (those who work against God's kingdom) to
grow together until the harvest (the end of time).
The gospel story tells us much about the justice and mercy of God. Even though the weeds are present
in our world, the wheat is growing and will prosper in the end. The grace of Christ will triumph over sin
and evil. Pray: Help me, Lord, to be your faithful follower until your kingdom comes in its fullness. Amen.
Gardeners tell us that we have to be careful when pulling weeds. Some weeds look very much like the
flowers and vegetables around them! Sometimes they have to be allowed to grow a little to be sure they
are truly weeds! Also, gardeners must be careful not to pull up the good plants with the weeds,
especially when they are growing close together.
Name some weeds in your personal world. Then name some weeds in our country. Then name some
weeds in the world in general. What is your attitude toward these weeds? What do you think might be
Jesus' attitude toward them? How should we treat these weeds?
If you look carefully, you might find some "weeds" inside your own heart. What is Jesus' attitude toward
them? How will you deal with them?

CARNIVAL GIFT CARD
REQUEST
The Carnival is one of the biggest “FUN-raisers” for our Parish. We have over 300
hundred volunteers who join us during the five nights. Each night we have “worker raffles”
with small gifts to acknowledge the dedication of the workers. This year we would like to
ask the parishioners to donate gift cards from our local businesses. I know a card from
Stop-n-Shop, Target, Kohl’s, Pathmark or any of our local merchants would be a great raffle
at the end of the night. If you would like to donate, the Carnival Committee and the worker
recipients would certainly appreciate your generosity. The cards can be in any amount you
choose. Please put them in an envelope marked “CARNIVAL GIFT CARDS” and drop
them in the collection basket, or bring them to the Parish Center. I thank you in advance for
your continued support of our Parish Carnival!!
