Strategically located between three of the country’s most prestigious research universities, The Research Triangle Park (RTP) is home to some of the most innovative and cuttingedge technology-based companies in the world. RTP provides a competitive cost platform with quality sites and facilities to meet and satisfy a diverse array of real estate and space requirements for R&D operations. RTP space options range from large parcels for campus developments to flexible office and lab space in one of the Park’s many multi-tenant buildings. Companies looking to join peers that are on the cutting edge of R&D will find several advantages to locating their operations in the Park, including a highly talented workforce, inviting business climate, and established infrastructure and zoning. For more information on purchasing land or space options in RTP, contact Kevin Johnson, VP, Business Development at johnson@rtp.org or 919.549.8181. RTP Covenants & Zoning RTP was established as a magnet for R&D to transform the region and state’s economy. As such, the covenants and zoning for the Park mandate that land in the Park be used for research purposes, production facilities, and operations with a high-degree of scientific input. An important element of the planning of the Park was the commitment to sacrifice the total amount of building and impervious surface footprints to preserve the natural balance and integrity of the land. The early planners of the Park used the topography, drainage patterns, and vegetation of the land to create an environment with the highest possible physical quality for the researchers’ work experience. This commitment to protecting the natural environment continues and is a key distinguishing characteristic for RTP. Who Can Locate in RTP? Companies wanting to take advantage of the close proximity to the regional knowledge assets, the Research Triangle Region’s talented workforce, and a dense concentration of high-tech companies can set up operations in RTP. A company can either purchase land for individual campuses or lease space in an existing building. RTP companies must also comply with the Park’s comprehensive covenants. Given these new demands, the Research Triangle Foundation of North Carolina – owner and developer of RTP – works to address and influence land-use and re-development issues to sustain RTP and the surrounding core. The end-goal is to ensure that RTP remains a key economic engine of a resilient and robust economy. In addition to continuing to provide the types of space options demanded by global R&D operations, RTP focuses on attracting and retaining the world-class talent that will drive these operations. As it approaches its 50th anniversary, RTP’s ability to provide networking opportunities and to catalyze collaboration and connections among the talent resident in the Park’s companies and throughout the surrounding region will be critically important. Extending the Global Brand The RTP brand is known throughout the world. RTP continues to be a leader in the science and technology park industry and serves as a model for harnessing knowledge assets and connecting them to other parts of the economy. As it looks to celebrate the past 50 years of success, RTP is working to build on that global brand by strengthening connections to other innovation centers in the region and to align partners around the world. For example, RTP will be the proud host of the XXVI International Association of Science Parks World Conference on Science and Technology Parks, 2009, welcoming over 1,000 science park managers and other technology-based economic development practioners to the Research Triangle Region and RTP.
