Old city
with a big
heart
Utrecht is almost 2000 years old. Stroll
down the streets and along the canals in
the Utrecht Museum Quarter, the cultural
treasury in the very heart of the city and
sample the pleasant, intimate atmosphere
for which Utrecht is famous.
In the Middle Ages, Utrecht was
the ecclesiastical centre of the
Netherlands and its skyline was
dominated by dozens of church
towers. Today, the city has eight
medieval churches. With a height
of 112 metres, the Dom tower is
the highest church tower in the
Netherlands and the eye-catcher
of the ‘Dom city’, which functions as a landmark throughout
the city.
Concise history
Around 47 AD, the Romans built
the Traiectum castellum (fortress)
to reinforce the northern border
of their empire along the Rhine
where the Domplein is now located. Late 7th century, the English
missionary Willibrord designed
the fortress as a mission and a
small town developed. Over the
next centuries, Utrecht developed
into a religious establishment and
trade underwent unprecedented
growth through the construction
of a medieval harbour complex of
canals, wharves and wharf cellars.
Utrecht remained the largest and
most important city in the Netherlands until the 16th century.
6
the Dom
The Dom tower is the pride of
Utrecht; the Dom cathedral was
also, until a tornado swept away
the nave on the summer evening
of 1 August 1674!
How could this happen? In
order to collect money for the
construction of the cathedral,
clergymen travelled through
the diocese of Utrecht to sell
indulgences for absolution or
moderation of sins. After the
construction of the current Dom
church (1254-1517) and Dom tower
(1321-1382), there was no money
left and the nave was ‘finished’
without flying buttresses, with
shortened buttresses and a level
wooden ceiling instead of stone
vaults. Is this construction the
‘culprit’? Historians assume it was
bad luck; the whirlwind caused
lower pressure in the church and
thus brought about the collapse of
the nave. The contours of the nave
are depicted in the black cobbles
on the Dom square. The high trees
represent the then walls and
covering.

to see
From medieval canals, ancient churches to
modern architecture, Utrecht can rightfully be
referred to as a city of listed buildings. Explore
its culture and 2000-year-old history.
Dom church Utrecht
The Dom church draws large crowds
daily for a guided tour or a moment of
silence and peace. The free Saturday
afternoon concerts (3.30 pm) have been
a household word in Utrecht for over
thirty years.

Climbing
the Dom tower
Climb the 465 steps of the Dom
tower with a guide. Reach the
top and get your reward via the
last 147 smaller steps which
are ingeniously incorporated
into one of the mainstays: a
spectacular view of Utrecht and
to Amsterdam, if the weather is
nice. Why do the steps turn to the
right? How did the Dutch term
for smashed originate? Hear all
about this and other facts and
anecdotes. Open: Mon. through
Sun.
Explore 200 years of
hidden Utrecht history
in the medieval cellars
under the Dom Square.
A visit to the Treasury
starts with a journey
through time. A tenminute film, which
is projected on the
walls and vaults in the
cellars, summarises
two thousand years of
history. One of the most
important draws is the
Roman Wall, the greater
part of which was
discovered last year
during the construction
preparations.

Rietveld Schröder
house
The Rietveld Schröderhuis; the masterpiece
by Gerrit Rietveld, highlight of ‘De Stijl’, icon
of the city of Utrecht and monument on the
World Heritage List, is an absolute must.
Utrecht architect Gerrit Rietveld (1888-1964)
built it for Truus Schröder. This house is
the only building ever to have been realised
according to the architectonic principles of
artistic trend De Stijl. The typical Stijl colours
red, blue and yellow, combined with black,
white, grey and the relation between interior
and exterior and the unity between separate
furniture and fixed components in the design
are typical. A visit to the meticulously
devised Rietveld Schröderhuis is a true
discovery where each part of the house tells
its own story. There are guided tours as well
as audio tours.
Architecture in the Uithof
The Uithof university premises sets the tone in
the area of high-profile modern architecture in the

Events
Utrecht is a cultural city, which is evident
from the vast number of festivals and
events that continuously take place in and
around the city, from Monuments Day to
theatre festival and from musical
event to the film festival.
vrede van
utrecht
2013 will be the 300th anniversary
of the Peace Treaty of Utrecht, the
first peace that was concluded at
the negotiation table instead of the
battlefield.
For eighteen months, Utrecht was the host,
partner and stage for an international company
that determined Europe’s future. Art and
culture, meetings and dialogues between various
cultures played a major role during these peace
negotiations in 1713. And now they once more
form the central theme in the international
cultural programme of the Peace Treaty of
Utrecht in 2013. For months, celebrations will
be held in the city as well as in the province. The
Stichting Vrede van Utrecht is an initiative by the
local authority and province of Utrecht.
Celebrating the Peace Treaty of Utrecht is not
the only event in the pipeline: the local authority
and province are hoping to make Utrecht the
2018 Cultural Capital of Europe. We will prepare
the nomination for the 2018 Cultural Capital
together.
In order to build the excitement for the main
celebration in 2013, art and culture is displayed
at various locations. Events are held all over
Utrecht: in suburbs, the province and the city.
Find art and culture at fortresses, castles
and the deserted air base of Soesterberg,
lectures in the Nicolai church with the Utrecht
University, district programmes for and by
Utrecht residents. And there is the free DJ at
the Dom spectacle and the Liberation Festival.

Let the plays commence
Since 2009, ‘De Utrechtse Spelen’
(Utrecht Plays) is the theatre company for the
city and region of Utrecht. With performances
in the city theatre, on location, in their own
De Paardenkathedraal theatre, at summer
festivals and classrooms, this company
targets a large and varied audience.
Artistic director and director of the De
Utrechtse Spelen is Jos Thie, who requires his
very own shape, players and location for each
project.
De Utrecht Plays consider it important to
reach people who, due to their upbringing
or background, are not used to visiting
the theatre, and the theatre company thus
actively searches out an audience. The basic
assumption for all performances is to create
a special and artistically interesting theatre
experience for an as broad as possible
audience.

The ultimate ode to love
Opera at the Soestdijk Palace
Singers floating over water, a drifting orchestra
and a magnificent park as a backdrop; this is
Orfeo ed Euridice. On and in the court pond of
Soestdijk Palace, Jos Thie directs a surprising
musical spectacle against a royal background.
At sunset, Orfeo ed Euridice tells the story of two
tragic lovers who even defeat death with the help
of the god of love, Amor. The contrast between the
upper world and underworld is visualised by the
fact that the opera takes place on, in and under
water.
Jos Thie: ‘Each theatre maker has some plays that
stay with them forever. To me, this is this opera
by Von Gluck. And the Soestdijk Palace adds a
regal touch to the story.’
From 3 June through 23 July, performance starts
at 9.30 pm. Reservations from mid-March via
website.

Festivalvibes
Cultural Sundays – the power of Utrecht
Utrecht teems with cultural
festivals all year round,
and has the Cultural
Sundays; special days with
a lively programme full of
theatre, dance, music, films,
workshops, etc. on large and
small stages, squares and in
parks. Usually free!
Green!
11-11-11
Sunday 19 June
Friday 11 November
Where do you come from, where
are you going, what future do you
leave behind? What is it like to go
back to basics for a day? A very
special sustainable Sunday, with a
scientific nature and cultural style.
During this weekend, two saintly
men take centre stage. On 11
November, children celebrate the
annual Martinmas, and Saint
Nicholas arrives the next day. What
exactly is the background of these
men, what were their ideas and
can a link be found to the present?
For both young and old.
De Uithof celebrates
its anniversary!
Quay Concert
Sunday 17 april
Sunday 3 July
Almost fifty years ago, a start was
made with the construction of
the De Uithof. De Uithof resulted
in scientific fame and plenty of
activity, but never in a fun day
out. This time it’s different! In
conjunction with the university
and the HKU, Cultural Sundays
put the Uithof in the limelight and
back on the map.
Close harmony, crooner songs,
classical notes and a large number
of visitors along the Oudegracht
canal: this is a wonderful blend
of professionals and amateurs,
and experience and enthusiasm.
The 2010 Quay Concert was well
attended when it was held for the
first time, and in 2011, an even
larger number of institutions and
musical groups will be invited to
participate.
Utrecht dances!
Sunday 29 May
After the successful event in 2010,
where people visibly had fun and
the sun never stopped shining, the
event will be held again this year,
with even greater attention for
various ages and lifestyles.
Uitfeest
Swingcity Goes Bebop
Sunday 11 December
The period of ‘swing’ took centre
stage during 2010 Jazz Enz, but in
2011, a leap of more than a decade
is taken in the history of jazz: the
period of the ‘bebop’, maybe the
most important post-war jazz
trend. In 2011, it is expanded to
Leidsche Rijn and Lombok, with
interesting locations in Leidsche
Rijn, such as the Roodnoot and
Vrijstaat farms and the Fort van de
Verbeelding.
Zondag 4 september

start of the cultural season.

Inspiring design
Utrecht is very inspiring for mature design.
At a magnificent canal in the direction of the
Lijnmarkt is Bebob that sells vintage and new
design furniture classics by Dutch designers
such as P.H. Eek, and second-hand furniture
by Gispen and others. Alternatively, visit
Strand West, a house filled with contemporary furniture and special accessories by
both established and new designers in an
ancient city castle.
Secular gifts
dille & kamille
Be inspired by shapes and colours in the
WAAR gift shop that sells organic, ecological and recycled articles with special design
products. When walking up the Zadelstraat,
be sure to step into Keck & Lisa for home
and garden decoration and other wonderful
items. This is where you find that particular
birdbox, gadget or breadbin. Everything is
contemporary and in lovely colours.
Dille & Kamille, located at the beautiful
Oudegracht, is an inspiring shop with essential
basics for home, garden and kitchen, and has
been a household name in Utrecht for 36 years.
Their extensive collection includes tableware,
handy kitchen utensils, table linen, tea and
coffee, a wide variety of herbs and spices,
cookbooks, old-fashioned sweets, wooden toys,
bath products and wicker baskets. Everything is
functional, simple and beautifully designed and
preferably made from natural materials.
This shop, with classical music playing in the
background, is an oasis of tranquillity that
makes people want to return. Enthusiastic employees are happy to provide expert information.
In short, a visit to this shop is a real must!

The Utrechtse
Heuvelrug
National Park
Cycle through
the Golden Age
As a sumptuous boulevard, the Vecht river
meanders between Amsterdam and Utrecht,
framed by hydrangeas, high trees and austere
lawns with tea pavilions as preludes of a
view of the magnificent country estates. Rich
Amsterdam merchants used to flee the city
to relax at the Vecht. The busy boat traffic on
the river and in the locks provides a pleasant
picture. Stop in at one of the numerous
picturesque towns, such as:
The Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park allows
for wonderful walking and cycling tours across
the lateral moraine, taking in moors, castles and
country estates in the forelands and wooded
areas. Put on your walking shoes for the 11-km
trip starting at the picturesque Amerongen castle
and climb to the highest point of the Utrechtse
Heuvelrug, the 69-metre high Amerongen
mountain to enjoy the beautiful view of the
Gelderse Vallei. Then follow a second climb to the
‘lonely oak’ on the eastern summit, with a view
of Veenendaal. A total of 56 walking routes have
been mapped, varying from 2 to 21 kilometres.
A number of bicycle and walking routes are
available at Tourist Information Offices, local
catering establishments and Dutch Forestry
Commission barns.

Practical information
Station area & Accessibility
Utrecht is centrally located and the ideal operating
base for a (city) visit to the Netherlands. Amsterdam
and Schiphol Airport are just 30 minutes by train;
Rotterdam and The Hague at 45 minutes. Daily
international trains from and to Brussels (2 hours),
Cologne (2.5 hours) and Paris (3,5 hours). For more
info, go to www.ns.nl or www.nshighspeed.nl.
The station area is undergoing a ‘facelift’ with the
ultimate goal to combine the station and the old city
centre. Inconvenience is limited as much as possible
and Utrecht remains easily accessible.
