2010 over 2,000 people from
all over Baltimore came out
to enjoy a beautiful day in
Patterson Park to celebrate
the Sixth Annual
BARCStoberfest! This year
was the most successful
BARCStoberfest to date!
Over 100 vendors, rescue groups and animal advocates participated in this
year’s festival and over 100 dog-owners “strutted their mutts” in the Second
Annual Strut Your Mutt Walk. More details, a special tribute to the late
Margaret Guccione and a special thanks to our sponsors and volunteers can
be found inside this issue!

Breaking Year!
• 3,275 animals found forever homes!
• 2,899 animals were transferred to rescues
and shelters as far away as Northern
Michigan and Arizona!
• 574 lost pets were reunited with their
families.
• We started a Facebook Fan page and have
over 5,000 fans.
• Our volunteers gave over 20,000 hours of
their time caring for the animals in 2010!
That's the equivalent of 10 full-time
employees!
A Letter from the Executive Director
Dear Friends of BARCS,
As we enter into 2011, I am reminded of all of the wonderful things that have happened at
BARCS this past year and am grateful to you, our donors and friends, who have made it possible
for us to care for the thousands of homeless pets that come through our doors, -- an average of 33
per day – every day of the year. Through your generosity, kindness and the many ways in which you
assist us in caring for the animals, you make it possible for them to get a second chance at a happy
and secure life.
2010 was exciting in many respects – we adopted out over 3,000 animals to forever homes;
sent over 2,800 animals to our partner rescue groups and shelters across the United States; are
members of the new commission to combat animal abuse in Baltimore City, spayed and neutered
thousands of animals in our onsite surgical room, and we were very fortunate to have Katherine
Jacobson Fleisher and Leon Fleisher do a benefit concert for BARCS in June to raise money for the
medical care of our homeless animals. To end the year, our 6th annual BARCStoberfest, held on
October 23, was a huge success with over 2,000 attendees, over 100 vendors and dozens of rescue
groups and organizations participating and helping us raise over $62,000 with one common goal in
mind: helping homeless animals find forever homes! I am also grateful to all of our dedicated volunteers, who continue to give more and more of their time to help our shelter to continue to save and
improve the lives of Baltimore City’s homeless animals.
As you read through this issue of Paw Prints, our first in almost two years, you will read
firsthand about all of the good news happening at BARCS. We have much to look forward to in 2011
and hope that you will continue to support BARCS and enable us to continue our work on behalf of
the animals that we care for each day. Thank you for your support.

Without the tireless effort of EVERYONE who volunteered their time, talent and treasure, ranging from
securing in kind donations to making bake sale goodies and decorating the booths, we would not have
been able to hold such a terrific community event. BARCStoberfest 2010 raised over $62,000 for the
shelter. Over 120 BARCS volunteers helped with event planning, soliciting donations and assisting at the
park the day of the event.
A special thank you to local band “The Mobtown
Saints,” who provided live music; Dee Jay “Mohawk
Todd” who provided recorded music in the afternoon
and Joy Freedman who was this year’s Master of
Ceremonies. Special thanks also to Mayor Stephanie

Margaret M. Guccione of Baltimore,
MD passed away on Friday October
8, 2010, following a long illness.
Margaret loved animals and began
volunteering at BARCS in the
Spring of 2009. She loved to walk,
train and help find homes for rescued cats and
dogs, as well as being guardian of two cats, Annie and Lucy,
and her beloved dog, Cooper. She rescued all three. She was well
known in the Patterson Park area and enjoyed chatting with other dog
guardians when she came to the park with Cooper. Upon description of
a particular dog one had seen walking in the park, Margaret could often
tell you the name of the pet, its guardian and a bit of background on
both. Margaret will be missed by everyone who knew her and loved her.
In a wonderful tribute to such an accomplished and extraordinary woman, Margaret’s family and friends gathered at this
year’s BARCStoberfest to walk their dogs in the “Strut Your Mutt Walk,” in her memory. Margaret’s team raised $5,769
and were the grand prize winners of a cruise for two, valued at $2,500 which they graciously donated back to BARCS!
Many thanks to Margaret’s children, Lisa, David and Mara, her husband, Jon Gibbons and all of her family and friends
who participated in the walk or made a gift in her memory.
"While our entire family shares a love for
animals, Mom's interest stemmed from a
special connection she had with her dog,
Cooper, whom she rescued from an animal
shelter in upstate New York. When Cooper died,
Mom decided that she wanted to help other
shelter dogs and began volunteering at BARCS.
She loved it and planned to spend her
retirement volunteering with shelter animals. We
are deeply saddened to think about how much
she could have done with more time, but as her
children, we intend to carry on her legacy of
kindness, compassion and love for animals."

BUBBS
Bubbs was found wandering around in a vacant yard
in Baltimore City. He was so underweight that you
could see every bone in his body. Bubbs was sent to
a local vet, paid for by the BARCS Franky Fund, and
boy did he need some repairs! His leg was severely
broken, so he was referred to an orthopedic surgeon.
We knew Bubbs would need to get to a rescue so
he could heal properly. Kat Knauff, BARCS Adoption
Counselor worked on Bubbs’ case day and night until
she found a rescue that would understand his needs.
She found a wonderful rescue, but it was located in
Arkansas. “Arkansas?” Yes, you heard correctly - all
the way in Arkansas.
Kat did an extensive background and reference check
on both the rescue and the
foster family and learned
that not only were they true
animal lovers, they were amazing people as well. The
foster “dad” drove from Arkansas to Virginia where
he met Kat and packed up Bubbs. It was love at first
sight. Bubbs instantly bonded with his new foster dad.
Kat was elated and in tears as she watched them meet
for the first time. What a wonderful story! Kat keeps in
touch with Bubbs’ foster family and Bubbs has made
himself right at home in Arkansas. His leg has healed
nicely and his foster parents love
him to pieces!
How to Contact BARCS

Dusty and Brian didn’t know each other prior to coming to
BARCS, but they now have ties to each other for the rest of
their lives. Dusty saved Brian’s life by giving him a blood transfusion.
One sunny summer day, a weak, flea ridden Brian came into
BARCS. Brian was found on the city streets and could barely
walk. He was covered in fleas, had major hair loss and was
emaciated. He had severe anemia due to
DUSTY
the amount of fleas that consumed him for
quite some time. A devoted BARCS staff
member noticed that his gums were close
to white which meant he was near death.
Our shelter vet said Brian needed a blood
transfusion immediately. This is when Dusty
pretty much raised her paw in hopes of
saving Brian’s life.
Brian and Dusty were rushed to a local vet
where the transfusion took place. Due to the caring people
that made donations to the BARCS Franky Fund; Brian survived
and Dusty became a hero. Within hours of the rescue request
email being sent out; both Dusty and Brian found a wonderful
rescue to call their new home.
The rescue has kept us updated on both Dusty and Brian’s
status, and they are both doing great.

A co-worker and I had been watching, and trying to catch, a few stray
kittens who had been living around
a scrap yard near Wicomico Street
and Washington Blvd. We would
see them occasionally after work
in the evening, after the noise of
the scrap yard had died down. We
knew these kittens were in danger,
so we were persistent in trying to
bait them with food to capture
them. About a week or so had gone
by and we had seen nothing of the
mother or the kittens. We had all but about given up on ever
seeing them again.
I thought,
“What am I going
to do with a
blind kitten"?
But he is amazing.
He loves to play with toys and to chase things
around the house. Every day seems to bring a
new challenge, a new success, as well as a failure of some sort to be overcome later! He does
pretty much all of the “normal” cat things you
would expect; however, he doesn’t climb on the
counters or tables or tries to run out the door!
He is the best pet I have ever had! BARCS, I
want to thank everyone for being so amazing
and working so hard to give this guy a second
chance. You have brought happiness not only
to a little guy who had seemingly given up all
hope, but also to me.

One morning soon after we gave up our search, another coworker came in with a small orange kitten she found in the
middle of a very busy street nearby. I recognized him right
away as one of the kittens we had been trying to catch. We
brought him immediately to BARCS where he was diagnosed
with severely ulcerated corneas. He was blind in both eyes
and in obvious pain. I offered to adopt, foster, whatever was
needed if he could be saved. It was decided that the removal
of his eyes was required. I decided to take him, no questions
asked!
A few days passed and I got the call from you that he was
ready for surgery and would be ready to go home the next day.
After I picked him up, I thought, “What am I going to do with a

A Letter from the Executive Director
Dear Friends of BARCS,
As we enter into 2011, I am reminded of all of the wonderful things that have happened at
BARCS this past year and am grateful to you, our donors and friends, who have made it possible
for us to care for the thousands of homeless pets that come through our doors, -- an average of 33
per day – every day of the year. Through your generosity, kindness and the many ways in which you
assist us in caring for the animals, you make it possible for them to get a second chance at a happy
and secure life.
2010 was exciting in many respects – we adopted out over 3,000 animals to forever homes;
sent over 2,800 animals to our partner rescue groups and shelters across the United States; are
members of the new commission to combat animal abuse in Baltimore City, spayed and neutered
thousands of animals in our onsite surgical room, and we were very fortunate to have Katherine
Jacobson Fleisher and Leon Fleisher do a benefit concert for BARCS in June to raise money for the
medical care of our homeless animals. To end the year, our 6th annual BARCStoberfest, held on
October 23, was a huge success with over 2,000 attendees, over 100 vendors and dozens of rescue
groups and organizations participating and helping us raise over $62,000 with one common goal in
mind: helping homeless animals find forever homes! I am also grateful to all of our dedicated volunteers, who continue to give more and more of their time to help our shelter to continue to save and
improve the lives of Baltimore City’s homeless animals.
As you read through this issue of Paw Prints, our first in almost two years, you will read
firsthand about all of the good news happening at BARCS. We have much to look forward to in 2011
and hope that you will continue to support BARCS and enable us to continue our work on behalf of
the animals that we care for each day. Thank you for your support.

Without the tireless effort of EVERYONE who volunteered their time, talent and treasure, ranging from
securing in kind donations to making bake sale goodies and decorating the booths, we would not have
been able to hold such a terrific community event. BARCStoberfest 2010 raised over $62,000 for the
shelter. Over 120 BARCS volunteers helped with event planning, soliciting donations and assisting at the
park the day of the event.
A special thank you to local band “The Mobtown
Saints,” who provided live music; Dee Jay “Mohawk
Todd” who provided recorded music in the afternoon
and Joy Freedman who was this year’s Master of

their time caring for the animals in 2010!
That's the equivalent of 10 full-time
employees!
