MESSAGE from the President
Saint Patty’s Day
Saint Patrick's Day or the Feast of Saint Patrick (Irish: Lá Fhéile Pádraig, "the Day of
the Festival of Patrick") is a cultural and religious holiday celebrated on 17 March. It is named
after Saint Patrick (c. AD 385–461), the most commonly recognized of the patron saints of
Ireland.
Saint Patrick's Day was made an official Christian feast day in the early seventeenth
century and is observed by the Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion (especially the
Church of Ireland), the Eastern Orthodox Church and Lutheran Church. The day commemorates
Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland, as well as celebrates the heritage and
culture of the Irish in general. Celebrations generally involve public parades and festivals,
céilithe, and the wearing of green attire or shamrocks. Christians also attend church services,
and the Lenten restrictions on eating and drinking alcohol are lifted for the day, which has
encouraged and propagated the holiday's tradition of alcohol consumption.
Saint Patrick's Day is a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland,
Newfoundland and Labrador and Montserrat. It is also widely celebrated by the Irish diaspora
around the world; especially in Britain, Canada, the United States, Argentina, Australia and
New Zealand.
So, Happy St. Pat’s Day - President Dennis

Tree Planting Held on Saturday, February 15th
The tree planting event started at 9:00am at two parks, Cardoza Park and Murphy Park. It was put
on by Milpitas Advisory Commission. Lion Gosia Czajka-Hernik and husband, Przemyshaw, and Lion
George Clark helped plant 125 trees (30 scarlet oak, 65 jacarandas and 30 sawleaf zelkovas). There
were over 110 volunteers rooting those trees. There were volunteers from the city VIPs and Lions
Club members. Lion Gosia said “it was a great experience” and “we had so much fun”. Przem likes
gardening. All the trees were planted by 1:00pm. Another great community project.

FEBRUARY BIRTHDAYS
“Valentine’s Day History”
Jennifer Bates – Feb. 3rd
Elena Perez – Feb. 21st
Ruben Alba – Feb. 26th
The history of Valentine’s Day is obscure,
and further clouded by various fanciful legends.
The holiday’s roots are in the ancient Roman
festival of Lupercalia, a fertility celebration
commemorated annually on February 15. Pope
Gelasius I recast this pagan festival as a Christian
Feast day circa 496, declaring February 14 to be St.
Valentine’s Day.

HUMOR OF THE MONTH
School Trouble
A student in a college philosophy course was having trouble making heads or tails out of a
reading assignment the teacher had given him. So, he went to the professor after classes and asked
for help. “Would you mind if we walked while we talked? I'd like to stroll down to the zoo.” the
professor asked. “Sure” said the student. He picked up the book and left with the professor. The two
walked down to the zoo, having a deep discussion about the contents of the reading assignment.
When they got to the lion enclosure, the professor asked, “Can I see your book?” “Sure” the student
said, and he handed the professor the book. The professor took the book, and tossed it into the lion
enclosure, where it promptly landed between two of the great cats. “So there”, the professor said, “If
you want to get the most out of that text, you have to learn to read between the lions.”
