The coming season is no exception! We are thrilled to be hosting an exciting and diverse season ahead featuring the Nimble Arts Aerial Circus, a multi-media artist residency program, a world-renowned boys’ choir from the Czech Republic, Makanda Jazz Project of Boston, the giant puppets of Rijah Newell’s Circus Olé, the 2nd Mahoosuc Sky Celtic Series, the Annual ARTirondack Auction, Annual Art Fair, Free Bandstand Concert Series and much, much more! The council strives to build much-needed and meaningful visual and performing artseducational programs for K-12 students in a rural district through annual performing arts series, artist in residency programs and theater residencies. The council is also committed to building community arts events for all ages which provide economic opportunities for artists and local businesses. We compile this guide as a resource for visitors, residents, businesses and artists to find new opportunities and experiences. The council is a leader in collaborative programming and operations. In 2011, the State of Maine and Maine Association of Nonprofits recognized the council with the Dirigo Award for Nonprofit Excellence for the scope and effectiveness of our mission impact. We urge you to join our mission in support of community arts, arts education and cultural economic development by making a tax-deductible gift to the Mahoosuc Arts Council today, no matter how small, with the donation form included in this guide. We would love to thank you with a returned gift of concert tickets to one of our upcoming performances! This ingenuity of production is truly a feast of for the senses with stunning set and puppet design. Performed on a visually-rich and creatively-designed, two-level stage by two experienced puppeteers, the life-sized puppets working with a live masked actor gives the sense of an intimate puppet show in a large space. This puppet theater has developed rich curriculum materials we can share with teachers and home school parents to augment the educational value of our investment. http://www.crabgrasspuppets.com/ CIRCUS OLÉ & FEAST OF FOOLS January 28, 2014 10 AM at Crescent Park Elementary School Home schoolers are welcome to attend. Donnie’s skillful picking and time-polished soulful voice make the duo a perfect match that has spanned decades. This wonderful duo offers something for everyone: Country and Folk to Blues and Rock-n-Roll, spiced with originals here and there. And of course, there’ll be some “yodeling,” an art Jewel inherited from her Dad, Yodeling Slim Clark. To learn more about Jewel: http://www.jewelwhatever.com/ Aug. 10 - Conni St.Pierre Conni St.Pierre is founder of the smasheasy® music label and Tourmaline Media. She is creator/composer of The Legends Trilogy, her critically acclaimed ambient/new age music series, as well as the new “Nature Spirits” series. Whether she’s playing melodic alto flute lines, or hauntingly ambient keyboard resonances - with the sparseness of Zen shakuhachi, or time-travelling with medieval-influenced Celtic harp - St.Pierre creates a musical landscape and shares an inner vision that is fresh and inspired - calm, and graceful. Conni also works as partner and manager of The Outloook recording studio in Bethel, which she and her husband, producer/engineer Ted St.Pierre, founded in 1980. Aug. 17 - Just Us Two Hailing from the hills of Western Maine, duo covers just about every favorite song you have ever had. Jo Plummer and Bob Gauthier lead you on a journey down memory lane, no matter your age. The voices of these two have a well-practiced musicans, blend perfectly in harmonoies and unions. They been playing out non-stop since they broke out into the perfomring scene in Maine for events like the Moore Park Art Show is South Paris (www.mooreparkartshow.biz), the Bethel Art Fair (http://www.mahoosucarts.org/artfair.html), The Norway Arts Festival, and at popular performance spots like Tucker’s Pub in Norway and The Smilin’ Moose in South Paris. Don’t be suprised if you find yourself siging along, 1960s through today... Aug. 24 - Abby Goldberg & Amalia Siegel These local ladies and Gould Academy grads have led the renaissance of bluegrass in Western Maine, making it cool again for the youngest and hippest crowd, while reviving classics that are decades old but which still make sense today. Abby and Amalia can be seen, and heard, tucked under a shady spot in Bethel with a guitar and mandolin working out the delicate harmonies that define their duo. They have performed for the council at the Annual Art Walk and Bethel Art Fair and will be sure to be performing much more with us in the future! Website: http://tenstringsandagoatskin.com World Acadian Congress 2014 Showcase Tour (International) July 16, 2013 7 PM, Bingham Auditorium, 45 Church St. $20 Adults/$15 Seniors 65+/$5 students This event is the official showcase tour with the World Acadian Congress. Three locations have been chosen in Maine for this promotional tour to call attention to the Congress in Maine and Quebec in August of 2014 The performers have been hand selected to represent the essence of Acadian culture in Music today. The artists are Denny Breau from Maine, Pascal Lejeune from New Brunswick and Patrice Michaud from Quebec.. Denny Breau’s rhythmically flawless and dazzlingly clear style allows him to do amazing and stunning things with a six-string guitar. He first draws in an audience with a finely arranged melody and then slides effortlessly into scorching fingerwork that sets ears aflame. The lighting fast guitar lines that seem almost humanly impossible to accomplish are balanced with those that have a quiet intimacy and wrap tenderly around his carefully crafted songs. Pascal Lejeune is a major Acadian artist. His writing talent and melody makes him one of the most interesting young artists on the French-Canadian stage. Well known as a charmer on stage, he uses poetry and humor and truly has a style of his own. Pascal Lejeune is an unusual and gifted singer! Patrice Michaud was born in 1980 in Cap-Chat, in Quebec’s Gaspé region. As a youngster gifted with a vivid imagination. When music finally entered the picture, Michaud started singing songs, telling stories and writing about everything he saw - and then some. Left with $8.75 in his bank account after a four-month European jaunt, he was invited to tell a story (the only one he had formally completed at the time) at the 2004 Gala Culturel Gaspésien, and ended up taking part in the region’s signal pop music event, the Festival en chanson de Petite-Vallée, in 2008. He came out of this sometimes scary, sometimes carefree experience with more than he had bargained for with no less than three prizes - the SOCAN Best Song Award for “C’est chien pour les singes,” the Public Award and the Grand 8 Franco-Québécois prize. In Irish folk music today, that act is the Makem and Spain Brothers. Not in the past 30 years has a group taken the international stage with such vocal power and stage presence, capturing the essence of their genre, while standing out as something truly unique. A host of various instruments and five male vocals, using precise three-part harmonies blend perfectly for what many have described as a wall of sound. The Makem and Spain Brothers are at their best onstage where their talent and enthusiasm draw in fans who have never experienced the joy of folk music. Website and media for Makem & Spain: http://www.makem.com SAMANTHA ROBISHAUD August 27, 2013 7 PM, Bingham Auditorium, 45 Church St. $20 Adults/$15 Seniors 65+/$5 students Samantha’s passion, desire and drive have led her to achieve incredible success in just a short time.
