ABCO Salutes James Cotten
Tuskegee Airman and Board Member
Edited from an article by Loretha Bingham, Manager, ABCO Member Care Dept.

James Cotten serves the ABCO community in the capacity of Board Member and has been on
the Supervisory Committee for more than nine years. He has been involved with Credit Unions
before, having served previously for over 20 years on the New Jersey Credit Union League
Board of Directors.
What you may not know is in January 1945, he was selected for assignment to the Tuskegee
Airmen Fighter Group, known as the ‘Red Tails’. The pilots, navigators, bombardiers, maintenance,
support staff, instructors and all personnel who kept the planes in the air, along with others
who supported their achievements, paved the way for integration of our U.S. Military.
After more than 20 years serving in
the Army and Air Force, followed by
45 years of civil service at Joint Base
McGuire-Lakehurst, James Cotten
received his Congressional Gold Medal
at a ceremony in May on the base
before a large group of family and
friends. Congressional Representative
Jon Runyan of Mount Laurel presented
the medal.
“The Tuskegee Airmen made me a
better person,” Cotten said. “It was
very satisfying to be among such a
select group.”
In August, Cotten was appointed
by Congressman Jon Runyon to
serve on a statewide Veteran’s
Advisory Committee.
In November 1998, the Tuskegee
Airmen National Site in Tuskegee,
Alabama, was established. In March
2007, the Congressional Gold Medal
was authorized. Learn more about the
Tuskegee Airmen at their website:
www.tuskgeeairmen.org.
Experiencing adversity, limited opportunities and denial of leadership roles because of their
race, they persevered and overcame prejudice, racism and segregation. The Tuskegee Airmen
became one of the most skilled and respected fighter groups of World War II, flying four
different types of aircraft in combat, (P-40, P-39, P-47 and the P-51) and dismantling the
mindset that African-Americans could not fly planes or maintain sophisticated combat aircraft.
In July of 1949, he was assigned to the
334th Fighter Interceptor Squadron 4th
Fighter Group as Air Operations NCO.
He was the first African-American
assigned to this organization after
integration of the U.S. Armed Forces.
His military awards consist of the Air
Force Commendation Medal (First Oak
Leaf Cluster), Air Force Good Conduct
Medal, Air Force Longevity Service
Award (with four Bronze Clusters), Air
Force Outstanding Unit Award, World
War II Victory Award and the National
Defense Service Award.
Congressman Jon Runyon, center, with James Cotten, Milt
Hershberger, ABCO CEO, and Ellen Kuiper, ABCO President, at
an August meeting at the VFW in Willingboro, where James
Cotten was appointed to a statewide Veteran’s Advisory
Committee. “I am proud to be picked to help my fellow
veterans and I’ll do whatever I can to make things better,”
said Cotten.
At 85, he continues to embrace and
exemplify the two mottos he’s lived by:
One of the Tuskegee Airmen—
“Thou Shalt Not Quit” and the other of his Twenty Plus Retirement Club—“Still Serving.”
We are proud to have him “still serving” as a volunteer with the ABCO community!

Avoid Dormant Account Fees and Escheat (sending the funds to the state)
Dormant accounts are defined as accounts that have had no activity on shares/
savings or loans for a period of 12 months or more. When this inactivity period
has been reached, we will begin to notify you that your account has fallen into
the dormant status. This means that unless activity resumes your account may be
subject to fees and ultimately escheated. Accounts that remain inactive will be
assessed a monthly fee of $15 beginning with the 18th month of inactivity. Also,
New Jersey statutes require that any account that remains inactive for a three-year
period is escheated (the funds are sent) to the State Treasury Department.
These actions are easily avoidable by simply utilizing the products and services
that ABCO membership provides. You also have the option to close your account.

2012 Scholarship Winners
Last fall, ABCO Federal Credit Union announced its Annual Scholarship

Jersey Credit Union League’s Youth Involvement Board to be judged.
Our members’ participation in ABCO’s Annual Scholarship Fund was
such that our Board of Directors was able to issue five awards in the
amount of $1,000 each. As participation in the Scholarship Fund Drive
continues, so will the opportunities for future scholarship applicants.

ABCO Cares
Operation Backpack
ABCO Federal Credit Union, its employees and
members donated over 120 backpacks and
hundreds of school supplies to the Center for Family
Service’s Operation Backpack.
Every year the Center For Family Services, a human service non-profit
based in Camden, hosts Operation Backpack to provide children
throughout South Jersey with the tools to start the school year. Items
collected included notebooks, pencils, folders, rulers, calculators and
other school essentials. A team of volunteers from ABCO helped stuff
backpacks with items needed according to the recipient’s age and
gender. Thanks to all who donated and helped.

member, donates items to our
