Pentecost Sunday
Bearings
Notes from Monsignor Easton
Pentecost
On this Feast of Pentecost we recall the
beginnings of the Church with the
outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the
apostles and the community of believers in
Jerusalem. The Holy Spirit continues to guide
and direct the Church even though the
forces of evil continue to work against the
Holy Spirit. Human beings throughout history
from popes to non-believers have rejected
the promptings of the Holy Spirit and gone
against the will of God. Even though we
have often turned against the Spirit, the Holy
Spirit has never given up on us or
abandoned the people of God. On this
Pentecost Sunday we give thanks to God for
the on going presence of the Holy Spirit and
once again open our hearts and minds to
the Spirit.
Annually on Pentecost, we call upon the
Holy Spirit to call forth new members for the
Parish Council of our parish. These members
of the Parish Council have completed their
three years of service on the council.

I deeply appreciate their service and
thank them on behalf of the entire parish.
May the Lord bless them for their generous
sharing of their gifts and talents with the
parish community.
As of this deadline for the publication of
the Herald, there are 10 nominees for these
four openings on the council. At the 10:45
am Mass this weekend four names will be
drawn from those who have been
nominated to complete the number of
council members. I would like to thank in
advance
all
those
who
accepted
nominations. If we are on the Parish Council
or one of the commissions, or if we are
serving in any of the many activities or groups of the parish,
we are responding to the grace of the Holy Spirit and
working together in building up the Kingdom of God.
Next Two Sundays
Next Sunday is the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, and
the following Sunday is the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body
and Blood of Christ. As we slip from the Easter Season and
back into Ordinary Time, these two Solemnities are
celebrated reminding us of the importance of God in our
lives and the centrality of the Eucharist in our Catholic Faith.

In preparation for the 2005 Year of the Eucharist, Pope John Paul II
blessed six monstrances, to be circulated among the dioceses of the
world within six geographical regions: North America, Latin America,
Europe, Asia, and Africa and the Pacific. The purpose of the
traveling monstrances was to encourage the faithful, parish by
parish, prayer by prayer, to worldwide Eucharistic adoration for the
intention of increased vocations to the priesthood and religious life.
A Blessed Monstrance has returned to Detroit as part of the
celebration of The Year For Priests. This image is one of the six Blessed
Monstrances for vocations. It serves as a symbol of the connection
between the Eucharist and priestly and religious vocations.
Sacred Heart Major Seminary and The Fisherman's Fund originally hosted the Blessed
Monstrance in 2008 in conjunction with the 175th anniversary of the Archdiocese of
Detroit. This year the National Shrine builds on that tradition with all night adoration
beginning after the 6 pm Sunday Mass on June 6, the Feast of the Body and Blood of
Jesus Christ.
Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will begin immediately following Mass with the
Knights of Columbus Color Guard standing watch until 6:15 am on Monday, June 7.
Mass will be as usual at 6:30 am with Benediction at 8:15 am before the 8:30 am Mass.
Please join us for all night adoration to pray for vocations and to support our priests,
seminarians, and all those who love and serve Our Lord, His Church, and each and
every one of us.

Catholic Services Appeal donation cards can be
returned to the Offices of the National Shrine of the Little Flower in a number of
ways convenient to you: using the return envelope, you can mail your donor
card back to the National Shrine; you can drop the card off at the
administrative reception desk in Heritage Hall, or you could drop it off in the
collection basket at any of the weekend masses. The most important thing is to
return your card. If you haven’t picked up your card and you would still like to
do so, you can pick the card up in Heritage Hall. No gift is considered too
small, but the benefits you provide the National Shrine of the Little Flower
through your contribution are tremendous. Your contribution helps maintain
the health of the Parish we love and care about.

Baptized in Christ
Father James Hayes
The Reverend James L. Hayes, the second pastor of Shrine Parish, entered eternal
life last Sunday, the Feast of the Ascension. Father Hayes was born on the Feast of
All Saints, November 1, 1912. The Archbishop, Allen Vigneron celebrated the funeral
Mass on Tuesday with Cardinal Adam Maida in attendance. The third pastor of
Shrine, Father Ed Prus, delivered the homily. Father Hayes was the pastor of Shrine
from1966 to 1974.
CSA
Many of you have picked up your CSA card over the past two weekends. Many
of you have also returned them. Thank you for your attention to this. If you did not
pick up your card you can still do so at the parish office this week. At the end of the
week the remaining cards will be mailed to those who did not pick them up.
Rosie, Carlito, & Kodiak
Rosie is adjusting to having a little (soon to be big) brother. She tolerates his
playfulness. She will even go and get toys for him to play with so that he will leave
her alone. I bought her a big rawhide bone and Kodi a smaller one. Well, Kodi
ended up with the bigger one. Rosie gave it to him and settled for the smaller one
for herself. What a good sister she is.

Mass Intentions
Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration
"You shall receive the power of the Holy Ghost
coming upon you."
-Acts 1, 8
"I believe that each time You come into a soul,
You prepare there a dwelling for the Father and
the Son. Blessed is he who is worthy to have You as
a Guest! Through You, the Father and the Son
establish their dwelling in him. Come then, most
benign Consoler of suffering souls, Protector in all
circumstances and Support in tribulations. Come Purifier of
faults, Healer of the wounded. Come, Strength of the weak,
Restorer of those who fall! Come, Master of the humble,
rejecter of the proud! Come, O charitable Father of orphans,
merciful Judge of widows! Come, hope of the poor, strength
of the weak! Come, guiding star of sailors, harbor of the
shipwrecked! Come, O unique beauty of all the living, and
only salvation of the dying! Come, O Holy Spirit, come and
take pity on me! Clothe me with Yourself, and graciously
hear my prayers, that, according to the multitude of Your
mercies, my littleness may be pleasing to Your greatness, and
my weakness to Your strength, through Jesus Christ, my Savior,
who, with the Father, lives and reigns in unity with You, forever
and ever. Amen."

Once again, I ask that you do not remove the prayer cards

your help in this matter. If anyone has extra rosaries, we could
use some for use in the chapel. (They are located by the
statue of St. Joseph.)
The window by the statue of the Infant of Prague is in the
process of being replaced with stained glass. Thank you for

A book for our times is
Christendom Awake: On Reenergizing the Church In
Culture by Aidan Niachols,
O.P. "Why has the Christian Church become
so inconsequential today?
What must
happen for it to reclaim the influence it
once had?
In [this book] a renowned
Catholic theologian argues that if
the Church is to become a vital social force,
it must regain confidence in its ability to
transform daily life." "This book embodies the
very thing it proposes--the awakening and
remaking of Christendom.
England's
foremost Catholic theologian displays the
undiminished
capacity
of
classical
Catholicism to renew liturgy and spirituality,
philosophy and theology, exegesis and
ecumenism,
art
and
architecture,
consecrated life and family life, economics
and politics. If there is a Catholic Christian
culture, then it is here." (back cover, by

meditation in which we ponder the truths of the faith and the
role faith plays in our own lives. In Mulieris Dignitatem, Pope
John Paul II meditates on the anthropology of man and
woman, God’s intention for their relationship, and the result of
original sin. He also explores the relationship that Jesus had
with women and the reason for the all–male priesthood. This
10-week discussion and study group is part of the ENDOW
(Educating on the Nature and Dignity of Women) series. Cost
for the class is $60, which includes all materials. The course will
be facilitated by Linda Rathburn. Register online at
www.endowonline.com. Financial assistance is available to
those in need--contact Margaret McCann at 303.715.3224 at
the National ENDOW Office in Denver for more information or
for assistance in registering. Other questions may be directed
to Linda Rathburn at drrlmr@wowway.com or by calling
248.467.4372.

Roamin’ with Rosie
Psst!!! Rosie here. But don’t let that puffball, Kodiak, know. It has been extremely difficult for
me since he’s been here. He is constantly barking and chewing on my ears. I lay down to take a nap
and the next thing I know he’s nipping at my tail!!! And he’s getting BIGGER. Those nips are starting
to hurt!
Anyway, I snuck in here to write my article so I hope he does not find me. By the way, I also
snuck into a secret meeting last week. It appears there is going to be some big event on Monday, September 13 at 7 pm
in the Church. I can’t tell you what it is, but you might want to put it on your calendars.
Last week, I asked you about the structure hanging over the altar. It is called a baldachin. The structure was
carved from oak and is hung by eight gold chains. The stained glass represents the fire of the Holy Spirit. If you look
at early pictures of the structure, the strained glass was not there. Instead, there were tapestries made of red silk
and trimmed in red and gold silk braid. I am not sure when the glass was added. On the corners are pictures that
represent the four Gospel writers: John (Eagle), Luke (Ox), Mark (Lion), and Matthew (Angel/human).
We’ve talked about the main altar and the four chapels of Saints Joseph, Mary, Sebastian and Perpetua, but who is
featured in the side wings, under the balconies?
Please email me at rosie@shrinechurch.com.
By the way, anyone want a dog? I’ll sell you Kodiak dirt cheap!

Vocations
“And they were filled with
the Holy Spirit…” (Acts 2:1–11).
The disciples of Jesus made
bold proclamations through
the prompting of the Holy
Spirit. What is the Spirit prompting you to
do? Be not afraid and act on it! If God is
calling you to be a priest, contact Fr. Tim
Birney, Director of Priestly Vocations at
313.237.5875 or visit our Web site at
www.vocationsdetroit.org.
A Family Perspective
We know parents
are given the gift of
the Holy Spirit. Could it
be that you are the
Advocate mentioned in today’s Gospel,
the Advocate who will teach and remind
your children of “all I told you?” Christian
parents are meant to be instruments of
the Spirit to their children.
