Haddam Neck Fair — Contests
The 104th Annual Haddam Neck Fair Labor Day Weekend 2015 Friday, September 4 from 4:00 pm thru Monday, September 7 Welcome to The 104th Annual Haddam Neck Fair Rated as one of Connecticut’s Major Agricultural Fairs This year is the fourth year of the second century of the Haddam Neck Fair. In the first century transportation went from largely horse and oxdrawn vehicles to trucks and automobiles. Food now comes from supermarkets instead of the backyard. People work at jobs many miles from Haddam Neck. In the first century there was effort on the part of the Grange organization and 4H to teach and promote better farming and conservation practices to improve the quality of life. The Haddam Neck Chapter of the Grange no longer exists, but 4H continues as our kids continue to learn these basic living skills and demonstrate them at the Fair. In the second century there is increasing concern for caring for our land and water resources and for a return to smaller, more local, and natural farming. May the Haddam Neck Fair, in its second century, continue its role of promoting these values while remaining an independent, familyoriented, major social and agricultural event. Have fun and thank you for joining us! www.haddamneckfair.com1 Preparations for the Haddam Neck Fair… 2www.haddamneckfair.com Table of Contents The Haddam Neck Fair Association . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5 Past Fair Directors . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 11 Program of Events . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 12-13 Chairmen — Operations . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 15 Chairmen — Exhibits . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 17 Community Projects Supported by the HN Fair . . . . . . . . . . . . 19 Scholarships . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 19 The Association of Connecticut Fairs Annual Scholarship Program . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 21 Rules and Regulations . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 23 National Code of Show Ring Ethics . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 25 Haddam Neck Fair Contests . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 27 Haddam Neck General Store . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 33 4H and Educational Booth Exhibits . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 35 Arts and Hobbies . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 37 Baby Show . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 39 Baked Goods and Baking Contests . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 35 Canned Goods . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 53 Cattle . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 55, 57 Fancy Work & Quilts . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 59 Flowers & Horticulture . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 63 Goats . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 69 Horse Pull . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 73 Horse Show . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 75 Oxen . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 85 Pedal Pull . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 89 Photo Contest, Local and State . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 91 Poultry . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 97 Rabbits . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 101 Road Race . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 103 Sheep . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 107 Tractor Pull — Antique . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 111 Tractor Pull — Farm and Modified . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 113 Truck Pull I — Street Stock . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 115 Truck Pull II — Modified . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 117 Vegetables and Fruits . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 119 Entry Blank . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 123 Map of the Fairgrounds . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 124 Advertisers Index . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 126 Map to Haddam Neck . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 127 Index . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 128 www.haddamneckfair.com3 Musical Entertainment at the Bandstand — Friday September 4 — Local talent Basically Blues Rock Landing 6:00 – 7:30 pm 8:30 – 10:00 pm 4www.haddamneckfair.com The Haddam Neck Fair Association Haddam Neck Fairgrounds 26 Quarry Hill Road Haddam Neck, Connecticut 06424 Fairgrounds Phone: 860-267-5922 Board of Directors David Tozier — President Bob McGarry — Vice President Amy Casey — Secretary Dianne McHutchison — Assistant Secretary Susan Rutty — Treasurer 860-873-3071 860-267-7906 860-558-9441 860-267-4671 860-345-4049 Frances Dallas Diane Darcy Mark Dumond Elizabeth Labella Rebecca McLean Sue Olsen Wayne Rutty Angie Sarahina Randy Spencer Mike Stevens 860-267-4513 860-227-0501 860-537-6348 860-554-5116 860-267-9975 860-267-2848 860-345-4049 860-759-5334 860-267-1305 860-267-8171 House Committee Frances Dallas, Diane Darcy, Elizabeth LaBella, Sue Olsen, & Wayne Rutty Auditors Jane Aldieri & Terry “Fats” Danaher Mailing Address: The Haddam Neck Fair Association P.O. Since it began in 1909, the Haddam Neck Fair has been an entirely volunteer operation, operating on its own without support from either government or sponsoring organizations. It is supported entirely by the funds it raises and by the hard work of its volunteers. Rated by the State of Connecticut as a Major Agricultural Fair, we are proud of the fact that we are able to maintain the small, country atmosphere for which we are known in spite of rising commercialism and the complications of modern life. In order for the Fair to continue its traditions we must recruit new volunteers on a continuous basis. The Fair runs smoothly because of an experienced team, yet we like to pass along that experience in an orderly fashion before it is lost and has to be relearned under stress. Summer work nights are held this year on Wednesday nights from 6:00 pm, and every night the week before the Fair. This is when we do all the various maintenance and preparation chores to get ready for the Fair. Come bring your tools and your skills and get to know us by working with us. We can also use organizational and public relations skills as well as plain old common sense. Come see why many of us come back year after year, and share in the great satisfaction we feel each year as we pull it off again. Questions?
