This is the second edition for 2012 and we have heaps to report. In this issue we again have the President’s Report from Chris Stanley, and summarise the changes that are commencing with the next championship. There have been a few changes and clarifications to rules and procedures introduced this year, and we share what you need to know ahead of the upcoming 2012 Spring Championship. We suggest you take a moment to get up to speed on this information. As expected we have race results and photos from recent events including the PDNR 10 Year Anniversary and the 2012 Winter Champs. Suzanne O’Connor also deserves a special mention for her huge effort in being the official photographer at the PDNR 10 Year Anniversary. She got some amazing shots and put them all up on her website for everyone to check out. Check our Suzanne’s photos at: http://pdnr10thanniversary.jimdo.com Suzanne O’Connor Photography: http://www.suzanneoconnorphotography.com Catch you at the track! Cheers, Pit Crew Chief THE RACERS EDGE – Issue #17 The newsletter of PENRITH DISTRICT NITRO RACING Inc Page 3 August 2012 PRESIDENT’S REPORT Dear Members and Guests, With most of the colder nights of racing behind us the warmer months are just around the corner, and with it bring a number of changes in the classes our club will offer. There will be a new Outlaw 1/8th scale class, two new Off Road classes and our Kit Class will have minimum lap times applied. The changes have been necessary to encourage new members to the club and to provide classes for all levels of driving experience and skill and various types of vehicles available. No doubt there will be some initial teething challenges so I would ask that you be patient until we get right mix and if you have any constructive criticism please let a committee member know. Since the last Racer’s Edge PDNR were fortunate enough to host the Racing Lines Winter Champs and once again we witnessed some great racing, great weather and some even better club spirit. There were a number of members who assisted in setting up the track the night before racing and many of those also assisted packing up the track after a long days racing. I won’t list these members names for fear that I may inadvertently leave someone out, but I thank you all very much for your assistance. THE RACERS EDGE – Issue #17 The newsletter of PENRITH DISTRICT NITRO RACING Inc Page 4 August 2012 However, I will make mention of two members, those being Tony Firth and Michael Turner. There doesn’t seem to be a time when I’m not thanking Tony and Michael for their countless hours of help and guidance that they put into the club and the Winter Champs was no different. Most of the things that were organised or coordinated on the day Tony would have in some way had a hand in on top of running race control. Michael, like Tony coordinated and organised the days events which included making sure that all of us hungry drivers got fed on the day, assisted in race control and took many photos. If you are in any doubt as to his commitment to the club just consider that he spent all day and night at the track and he didn’t even race. These two gentlemen hold our club together and give it the sprit that we enjoy today, so for that I thank you both and I would also encourage other members to stop and take a moment to thank them for what they do. We are still progressing, all be is slow, with a move to P3. We’ve submitted some lighting diagrams to SIRC and are awaiting engineers to examine our proposal for approval. Until then we are in a bit of a holding pattern. As you will read later in the magazine there are a couple of important dates fast approaching which include a working bee to repair/replace damaged equipment, a Thursday night Bunnings BBQ promotion, and a PDNR Promo Day at the St Marys Spring Festival in conjunction with Graham’s Hobby Centre. All of these events have positive benefits for our club and I would ask that all members try and assist your club if possible by supporting both of these. Finally I would like to wish all the drivers who are attending the upcoming National Titles at the end of September in Queensland all the very best of luck and hopefully PDNR will bring home some more silverware. I wish everyone good luck in the upcoming Spring Championship and please remember this is your club and your ideas. THE RACERS EDGE – Issue #17 The newsletter of PENRITH DISTRICT NITRO RACING Inc Page 10 August 2012 Competition Rules & Racing Guidelines: For full details on the changes and clarifications which come into effect from the 2012 Spring Championship you can download the full copy of the Competition Rules & Racing Guidelines from the PDNR website. Ask at race control for a printed copy, or download a PDF from the direct URL below: pdnracing.org.au/download/ REMINDER: Track Pack Up – Roll Call: PDNR now employ a roll call system at the end of racing in an effort to improve the involvement of drivers from the last two divisions who are currently required to help pack up. The system is essentially a roll call that is conducted at the end of track pack up (which is determined by the roller shutter being closed, and curtains down on the trailer). Drivers who are not present (or who do not have a substitute present) will incur a penalty. REMINDER: Track Pack Up – Penalties: To coincide with the trial roll call system for track pack up, PDNR have revised the penalty system that applies to drivers who do not fulfil their pack up responsibilities. Failure to assist with track pack up (when required) 1st Offence = Loss of 1 minute track time 2nd Offence = Loss of 1 minute track time Continued = As per Committee see fit Drivers are reminded that should they not be able or available to fulfil their pack up duty, they need to arrange for a substitute to cover them. There are many regular members and committee packing up every week, so it should be reasonably easy to arrange a substitute. The PDNR 10 Year Anniversary was a spectacular event, combining circuit racing and drag racing activities, attracting a club record 159 entries from 81 competitors, with a total of 18 divisions on offer across circuit and drag racing. PDNR were blessed with perfect weather, and the day was jam packed with nonstop action everywhere you looked. Many of PDNR’s past members and drivers made the trip back to PDNR for this event, even though they no longer race which was great to see, and a good size crowd were in attendance throughout the day. In the build up to the event, PDNR communicated that they were approaching this milestone event as a “fun day” with an emphasis on celebrating the last 10 years, and they did just that. At the foundation of the event was a race meeting for circuit and drag racing, but the plethora of off track activities is what made the event for many people. The formal opening ceremony reflected on PDNR’s journey over the last 10 years, and official dignitaries from State and local council were in attendance to take part and recognise the growth and achievements of PDNR. The dignitaries Mr Stuart Ayres - MP, Senator Marise Payne – Senator for NSW Councillor Greg Davies – Mayor of the City of Penrith even had a drive of some nitro RC cars to get a taste of what RC racing is like. Councillor Jackie Greenow - Deputy Mayor of the City of Penrith assisted with the trophy presentation at the conclusion of the event. THE RACERS EDGE – Issue #17 The newsletter of PENRITH DISTRICT NITRO RACING Inc Page 13 August 2012 THE RACERS EDGE – Issue #17 The newsletter of PENRITH DISTRICT NITRO RACING Inc Page 14 August 2012 THE RACERS EDGE – Issue #17 The newsletter of PENRITH DISTRICT NITRO RACING Inc Page 15 August 2012 Away from the track there was a static car display of muscle cars thanks to the Mustang Owners Association of NSW, and a few other cars were on show thanks to PDNR members and drivers. The kids were entertained all day with the jumping castle (in the theme of a monster truck of course) and thanks to CSR Sugar the fairy floss machine had a queue every time Brusier twirled his magic! Other memorable features of the event were the special limited edition PDNR 10 Year Anniversary cap that all entrants were given – including the kids. All entrants also received a show bag with some bits and pieces from sponsors and other event supporters. The circuit race day itself was limited to only two rounds of qualifying and shorter than typical finals due to the other formalities and fun activities PDNR had organised. This wasn’t a problem as entrants were aware this was not going to be a full on race meeting where sheep stations were up for grabs – but the competition was still extremely fierce at the pointy end of most divisions with past and present state and national champions and some of the best drivers in the country in attendance for this event. The drag racing action was run to format with qualifying rounds and elimination finals – but entrants could have done with a pinch more run-off in the braking area. New records were set for P3, and the crowds were entertained all day with the phenomenal performance of the scale drag cars over the 40 metre strip. The demonstration divisions added some more fun to the event. The Kids demonstration class was hugely popular as the future RC racers took to a modified circuit. Kids as young as 2 had their time in the spotlight with whatever RC vehicle Mum or Dad could provide. The Nostalgic Demonstration division was a true step back in time, with many old cars from PDNR’s history lapping around during the lunch break. The best kept would have to be David Wowk’s Kyosho Super 10, but the crowd pleaser himself was back, and Kim O’Connor with his wheel standing and back flipping EK4. It looked like he had never been away! Some ex-championship winning cars were also restored for the event such as Tony Firth’s Tamiya TG-10. As always events don’t happen by themselves so a huge thank you and job well done must go out to everyone involved. The PDNR committee, members, drivers and their family and friends can be privileged and proud to have such a great event for PDNR’s 10 Year Anniversary – keep up the good work and look forward to doing it again in another decade! This event is promoted by Racing Lines magazine, and in 2008 PDNR received their first opportunity to host this event and attracted 84 entrants. In 2009 just over 70 entrants were in attendance to once again do battle for this prestigious event. An average size field took battle in 2010 and 2011 with the smaller number of entrants putting on an above average display of great racing. In 2012, nearly 65 entrants took to the new P3 car park to do battle. Big thanks to all PDNR members and drivers and their friends and families who attended and gave their support of this years event. A similar format to previous years was used, with the event catering solely for Nitro (GP) divisions. Nitro Kit, Pull Start, Open Tourer and Open Pan (1/8 Scale) were offered, along with the introduction of a Kids demonstration class. The 2012 Winter Champs was blessed with amazingly perfect weather, drivers would have been forgiven for thinking it was not a Winter day! The pace was hot right from the start and the pace improved as the track evolved. PDNR were using SIRC's new P3 car park for their temporary car park circuit. Thanks to the support from PDNR and visitng drivers from NSWRCRCC, IMCC, Newcastle and SORMCC. And introducing myself, Jamie Fellowes, the head of Drags or as it is formerly called Drag section Head. We have began to start using the new P3 parking lot with lots of success and new records being broken every meet, the new surface is showing the real potential of the cars as we strive to do our personal bests and record breaking runs. Frank Naylor, our Sugar Daddy is keeping the surface nice and sticky, so there heaps of traction there. We are constantly making improvements in the track set up and one of them is the new T piece housings that are being made to protect the timing light sensors that get hit on a regular basis, hopefully they will be ready for round 6 on the 19 august, this will save a lot of time in setting them up when constantly being hit at over a 100 kph. Below are the current records so far, I am really encouraged to see the Dads bringing the kids down to have a go, as we want it to be kid friendly as well, so well done to all the Dads for the effort that’s needed to get the kids and cars ready for a day at the Drags. Some of the kids were getting so fast they had to step out of the junior classes, as they were getting too fast. Well done! I would like to thank all the drag racers that come and support the racing, without you there is no Drag Racing, so a big thank you for all the help in set up and pack up. We have a lot of work to do, so let’s make this our Club THE RACERS EDGE – Issue #17 The newsletter of PENRITH DISTRICT NITRO RACING Inc Page 34 August 2012 I would like to thank all the other people on the drag committee as well, as without all their hard help and ideas there just wouldn’t be any Drags, they are: Secretary : Rod Albronda General Committee: David Lo Lacono General Committee: Peter Wilson General Committee: George Pugh General Committee: Frank Naylor General Committee: Russell McGuire Feel free to drop me a email or call if you have any ideas or suggestions for the Drags, we want this to be your club.
