LGBT History Month 2013
february
2013
www.lgbthistory.org.uk
hello!
01
welcome to LGBT History Month 2013
LGBT History Month Scotland takes place across the country
every February. It is an opportunity to celebrate LGBT (lesbian,
gay, bisexual, transgender) life and culture and to recognise the
achievements of LGBT people and communities. LGBT History
Month is organised by LGBT Youth Scotland, and every year we
work in partnership with groups and organisations to programme
a range of arts, culture and education events.
LGBT History Month is for everyone: community
groups, organisations, individuals, activists,
professionals, service providers, LGBT and
non-LGBT people alike.
We’re now in our 8th year and in that time we have
gone from strength to strength. We’re grateful
to all our long-time supporters and partners
and we’re looking forward to another month of
fabulous events. If you’re discovering us for the
first time in 2013 we hope you’ll find something to
interest you here. But if not, why not get in touch
to find out how to organise your own event?
See lgbthistory.org.uk or contact Amy at
amy.murphy@lgbtyouth.org.uk/0141 552 7425.
Through the support of Creative Scotland, we
have been able to award 12 grants of up to
£1,000 to enable organisations of all sizes – from
community based groups to national organisations
– to host a total of 16 artistic and cultural events
during February 2013. We’re delighted to be able
to include these events in this programme. Look
out for the History Month logo next to the event
listing to spot our grant winners.
Keep an eye on lgbthistory.org.uk for up to date
info on our full programme of events. Happy
LGBT History Month from all the team!

cultural commissions
This year we have been able to award two LGBT History Month Cultural Commissions. Artists Sandra
Alland and Lucy Holmes-Elliott will produce high profile artworks treating LGBT themes.
The LGBT History Month Cultural Commissions will be formally launched on Thursday 28th February,
7pm at the macrobert arts centre in Stirling. Please join us there to be among the first to see Sandra
and Lucy’s work. Further details: www.lgbthistory.org.uk or call Amy on 0141 552 7425.
Sandra Alland will create a documentary film about LGBTI artists
in Scotland who also identify as disabled and/or Deaf. She will
mentor individual LGBTI disabled and/or Deaf people in making
3-5 minute short videos that reflect their experiences and histories
in Scotland.
Sandra Alland is an interdisciplinary artist, writer and performer.
She has exhibited at Tate Modern, GoMA, mac Birmingham and
Schwules Museum. Her videos have screened at festivals including
Berlin’s Entzaubert, LA Transgender Film Festival and MIX
Copenhagen. Her video of Deaf sign poet, Alison Smith, recently
won Canada’s LitVid competition. Sandra is founder of Scotland’s
b)other LGBTI Deaf and Disabled artists, and one-half of queer
performance duo, Zorras. www.blissfultimes.ca
Lucy Holmes-Elliott will produce a series of 12 – 15 illustrations
and 30 photos that will form an exploration and celebration
of queer Scottish Identity. The illustrations, influenced by
photographer Zoe Strauss, are minimalist, stripped back
simple black lines on white to distil the essence of the
person being shown.
Lucy Holmes-Elliott is an artist and filmmaker based in Glasgow.
She co-founded magazine and club night “Lock Up Your
Daughters” (LUYD) which showcases queer artists/musicians/
photographers/filmmakers. The people who feature in her films
and illustration are the focus of her work creating a striking and
personal representation of the subjects.
