Everybody calls the three bunnies the “Money Bunnies” because they’re smart about planning, saving
and spending their money. This is the story of how the three bunnies got their nickname.
Brownie and his family are going on vacation! He, his sister, Bonnie, and his brother,
Buddy, have been saving up all year so they will have money to spend at the Hippity
Hop Amusement Park, the biggest and most exciting theme park in the whole world!
Brownie, Buddy, and Bonnie do extra chores to earn money. Of course some chores, like
taking out the trash and setting the table, are just done as part of the family housework.
Brownie does all kinds of other jobs, but his favorite is gardening. He knows that when
the vegetable garden is weeded and tidy, the carrots will grow big and juicy.
Brownie knows how important it is to save money. He knows that saving money means putting some aside until he has
enough to buy what he wants. So every week Brownie puts half of what he earns into his piggy bank and only spends
a little. Buddy helps the neighbors rake their yard and clean their house. Bonnie walks a neighbor’s dog. Every week
they put a little money in their piggy banks too, but not as much as Brownie. Buddy and Bonnie like to spend money
on things they want right away. Buddy spends a lot of his money on toys and Bonnie buys lots of pretty hair ribbons.
On the night before the Bunny family leaves for
the Hippity Hop Amusement Park, Brownie
counts all the money he has saved and puts it in
his wallet. He packs his wallet safely into his
backpack for the trip. He is so excited he doesn’t
think he’ll be able to sleep at all tonight!
Finally the big day arrives! It’s vacation time! The family piles into the car and heads off to the Hippity Hop
Amusement Park. Mother asks the bunnies what they’d like to do at the park. All the bunnies close their eyes
and imagine their trip. There will be a roller coaster and bumper cars, a giant Ferris wheel, and the fun house.
The souvenirs and toys at the amusement park are the best ones anywhere. What a great vacation this will be!
“I want to go on the Ferris wheel so I can look down at the whole amusement park.
And I want to buy some souvenirs!” says Buddy.
“I want to ride the merry-go-round and buy some balloons!” says Bonnie.
Brownie wants to go on every single one of the rides. He doesn’t care about souvenirs. He shouts,
“I want to go on the roller coaster 100 times! And the fun house and the bumper cars.”
The Bunny family drives for a very long time. When they arrive at the
Hippity Hop Amusement Park, Brownie is the first one in line at the ticket
gate. His brother, sister, and parents are right behind him.
While Brownie looks
at a map, deciding
which ride he wants
to go on first,
Buddy and Father
head straight to the
Ferris wheel. Buddy
loves being up so
high that you
can see the
entire park and
some of the
town below.
Bonnie rides the
merry-go-round and goes to
the fun house with Brownie
and Mother. Later, she and
Buddy buy drinks and ice
cream cones.
At night, Brownie and his family talk about how much fun they’ve had. “I loved the Ferris wheel most of all!”
says Buddy, “And I want to buy some souvenirs.” Bonnie agrees, “Tomorrow we’ll have to do some shopping!”
“I’m going to go on every ride again!” says Brownie. “Okay, children,” say Mother and Father.
“It’s time for bed. You need plenty of sleep so you can get up early again tomorrow.”
The next morning, Brownie is the first one awake and the first one in line again.
His family is close behind, ready for another fun day!
Buddy runs to the ticket booth,
ready to ride the Ferris wheel again.
But when he opens his wallet,
he sees that he has only enough
money for either one ride or a
souvenir. Buddy spent more money
earlier in the year than Brownie,
so now he has less to spend at
the park. He has to decide which
one he wants more – a ride or
a souvenir. But he wants both!
Bonnie is next in line, ready to ride the roller coaster. But when she looks in her purse,
she also has only enough money for either another ride or a souvenir.
Bonnie and Buddy ask their dad which
choice they should make. Should they go
on another ride or buy a souvenir?
It is such a hard decision!
Dad asks, “which choice
would make you happier?”
Buddy and Bonnie think about it.
“I really want to go on another
ride,” says Buddy, “but I want
to have a souvenir too!”
“I want to remember all the
fun we had,” says Bonnie.
“Even though I want to ride
the roller coaster, I can show a
souvenir to all my friends. My
choice is to buy a souvenir.”
Buddy agrees. So Father
takes Buddy and Bonnie to
the souvenir booths to buy
some special toys to
remind them of their
vacation. Mother stays
with Brownie while he
goes on lots of rides.
Brownie goes on the
bumper cars again while
his mother sits close by
enjoying the sunshine.
At noon, just before it is time to go
home, Mother and Father treat all the
bunnies to a ride on the monorail.
On the ride home
that afternoon,
Brownie, Bonnie and
Buddy talk about all
the fun they had
during the day.
Mother and Father tell the bunnies
how proud they are that they had
saved their money for vacation,
planned how to spend it and were
happy with their choices.
They are all good savers
and smart spenders!
When Brownie, Buddy and Bonnie got
home, they told their friends how
much fun they had at the Hippity Hop
Amusement Park. They told them
about the rides and showed them
their souvenirs. The bunnies were glad
they had saved their money all year
long. Right away they began thinking
about next year and started saving
for the next vacation.
Mother and Father exclaimed, “I think we have three smart Money Bunnies!” And that is
why everyone calls Brownie, Buddy and Bonnie the “Money Bunnies.”
