June - August 2012 pilot products magnets make sense, in more ways than one Overband magnets add value to any crushing and recycling operation for the simple reason that they attract metal. By doing so, they save the internal workings of a plant from expensive damage, while also reclaiming valuable material which can be recycled and resold. Regional sales manager Rasheel Sukdhoe has several customers who use overband magnets for reclamation and recycling purposes. Pilot Crushtec has experienced a surge in the sale of Pilot Modular/TRIO overband magnets for exactly these two reasons. “They can, for example, use overband magnets to reclaim steel from slag which is then recycled and sold. A number of customers use overband magnets to remove metal from the material before it reaches the stockpile, giving them another saleable product.” Africa sales manager Wayne Warren has seen the damage pieces of metal can wreak on a cone and impact crusher when in a closed circuit, and is convinced that adding an overband magnet to their plant gives operators a relatively cheap solution to what could be a very expensive problem. The Pilot Modular range of magnets add value by saving the plant from expensive damage “It is an insurance policy, and the price is insignificant in comparison with the total cost of a multi-million rand plant. It is also insignificant when one considers the cost of a breakdown, expensive repairs, downtime and the pressure to make up lost time,” he adds. Yet another example is the use of overband magnets on demolition sites, where rubble has been processed by jaw or horizontal impact crushers. A lot of the concrete contains rebar, which is retrieved by the magnets for sale by the operator. Whichever way you look at it, having a magnet in your plant is simply a matter of common sense. our new RM80 is good to GO! We are proud to introduce the new Rubble Master RM80 GO!, a brand new edition of the highly successful RM80 compact recycling crusher, which has served its South African users well since its introduction some 4 years ago. “The RM80 GO! is a natural evolution from its predecessor’s design. Rubble Master engineers have painstakingly evaluated ways of improving a product that was in itself an outstanding concept,” says director sales Graham Kleinhans. The word ‘GO!’ signifies the Rubble Master’s new colourcoded pushbutton control system, which makes operating the crusher simplicity itself. “You just have to press buttons ONE, TWO, THREE and GO!, and your Rubble Master is up and running, producing quality saleable material. In the crushing business, time equates to money and the RM80 GO! can be off-loaded and working within 10 minutes of its arrival on site,“ adds Graham He explains that the simplicity of its systems means that the RM80 GO! is easily managed by just one operator who can also tram it using a built-in remote control system. Significantly, it has even more muscle than its predecessor. The new power plant is a John Deere 6 cylinder engine, delivering 168kW at 1,800rpm, an increase of 38%. Lower engine revolutions mean lower diesel consumption, and the RM80 GO! consumes a miserly 18 litres per hour. Conversely, its maximum throughput has increased to 160 tonnes per hour. Graham is particularly enthusiastic about the functionality of the new design. “Ease of maintenance was high on the list of the designers’ priorities and access to all key components has improved to the extent that they can now be serviced from ground level. This is a huge benefit to customers working in remote areas without the benefits of permanent workshop facilities.” According to Africa sales manager Wayne Warren, a product like the Pilot The Pilot Modular MFH25 Modular MFH25 feed feed hopper adds enormous value to balancing a plants hopper can have a positive operation effect on output while reducing stress and strain on a plant and increasing its operational life. “The inclusion of a feed hopper in the plant specification is all too often overlooked. However this is frankly a false economy as the benefits far outweigh the relatively minor cost involved.” He explains that the placement of a feed hopper between jaw and cone crushers or prior to screening has an enormous effect in terms of balancing the plant’s operation. “A vibrating feeder on the surge hopper like the Pilot Modular MFH25 ensures a constant feed of material Graham makes no secret of his enthusiasm for the new product, which has already landed on South African shores. “The RM80 GO! is set for an exciting future, especially with the pressing need for new and renovated infrastructure driving recycling activities within southern and central Africa.” By the same token, the RM80 GO! is the perfect partner for operators engaged in projects within densely populated commercial and residential areas. It is fully compliant with stringent European Union regulations in respect of noise and exhaust emissions and has its own self-contained dust suppression system. Rubble Master is based in the Austrian city of Linz and its versatile compact crushers are used worldwide for the recycling of rubble, asphalt and concrete and crushing medium hard stone to produce saleable construction materials. An additional, value-adding feature is that every a MFH25 feed hopper to make the most of your plant Every operator wants to get the maximum benefit out of their crushing and screening plants, and the addition of a feed hopper can make a valuable contribution to operational efficiency. RM80 GO! is fitted with a magnetic separator to ensure that the crushed rock or concrete is kept free from metallic objects. to the secondary crushers and screening equipment. This continual flow means that the combined elements of the plant, crushers, conveyors and screens can be well-balanced and are therefore able to operate at peak efficiency.” He adds that apart from the obvious gains linked to improved throughput, there are two more reasons why using a feed hopper should bring a smile to your accountant’s face. pilot news Terex Finlay screens – diamonds in the rough The resurgence of the global diamond market has had a huge impact on the mining industry across the African continent. And while diamond sales are sparkling, we have enjoyed an accompanying surge in demand for Terex Finlay screens from customers like Steyns Diamante. Steyns Diamante has been a Pilot Crushtec customer for quite some time and has extensive experience in operating heavy-duty mobile screens. It bought its first screen seven years ago and has not looked back since learning that Terex Finlay products are ideally suited to the business of alluvial diamond mining. “These machines are definitely made for Africa. They’re mobile, they need minimal maintenance and they have proved to be very, very reliable,” says owner Schalk Steyn. He speaks from considerable experience as he operates a substantial fleet, including six Terex Finlay 883 heavyduty scalping screens and a single Terex Finlay 984 3 deck horizontal screen. “From the very beginning we found them to be compatible with our existing plant and systems and the Terex Finlay 883’s versatility means that we can do in-pit screening which gives us a major cost saving,” says Schalk. Director sales Graham Kleinhans believes that the versatility and cost- effectiveness of these screens has been a major factor in developing the type of relationships that exist between Pilot Crushtec and customers like Steyns Diamante. next.” From time to time the operation also uses the Terex Finlay 883 screen in conjunction with the Terex Finlay 984 3 deck horizontal screen to produce five products at high capacities. “If you mine you are legally bound to rehabilitate the land you have disturbed which, in this case, means riverbeds containing the ore. The Terex Finlay’s oversize conveyor automatically returns out of specification material, even boulders, back into the ground. This means that Schalk and his team are already rehabilitating while they are screening,” says Graham. Schalk believes that a great deal of the Terex Finlay’s reliability is due to the simplicity of its design. Steyns Diamante is presently mining a stretch of alluvial strata between the towns of Prieska and Douglas in the Northern Cape province, which Graham says is the type of territory where a Terex Finlay excels. “The screens are diesel powered which means they are free from the restrictions associated with electrical power supply and they are very productive. Even under strenuous local conditions, they can comfortably screen 400 tonnes per hour and their tracks enable them to be walked from one screening site to the “It is a very mechanical machine and does not have complex electrical controls unsuited to African conditions,” says Schalk, who took delivery of three Terex Finlay 883 scalping screens between November 2011 and January 2012. At a cost of R2 million a piece, this shows a very real faith in our ability to service our products as Douglas is almost 700 kilometres from our headquarters in Jet Park, east of Johannesburg. “Pilot Crushtec’s support is just excellent and so is its service. If we need a part, it is sent to us overnight or even over a weekend. Management and sales engineers visit us regularly and we frankly regard them as the market leaders,” says Schalk. The all new RM80 GO! compact recycling crusher has a new colour-coded pushbutton control system that makes operating the crusher, simplicity itself pilot classic “The balancing effect a hopper exerts on a plant means that all components are working at their most efficient, maximizing the wearing surfaces and power required for the plant, especially in an operation working 24/7. This in turn reduces maintenance costs per ton and the risk of premature, often expensive breakdowns and downtime.” Wayne strongly suggests that customers who would like to know more about the Pilot Modular MFH25 feed hopper speak to their regional Pilot Crushtec sales engineer who will be able to assess their requirements. The Pilot Modular MFH25 is named because of its 25m³ heavy duty feed hopper fitted with wear resistant steel liners to handle literally any type of application. The semi-mobile MFH25 is supplied complete with a heavy duty skid frame and can be easily integrated into an existing plant. Although vast amounts of money are poured into our education system here in SA, our youth are not receiving the standard of education they deserve. I believe that it is critical that we as formal business continue to push our government to increase the standards so that people leaving school can have the required knowledge to enter tertiary education or industry. Sandro Scherf About 10 years ago and following the example of one of our customers, we introduced a programme to assist students in achieving their goals. We teamed up with Wits Technikon (now part of University of Johannesburg) to allow students in 2nd and 3rd year to complete their practical training requirements with us. We have had great success with this and we continue to partner with between 5 and 10 students annually to help them complete their qualifications. The bonus for us is that during this training we have identified and employed several of these trainees who are now contributing to our success in all areas including sales, design and support functions. introducing the RM70 GO! to the Eastern Cape East London plant hire specialist Inyathi Plant and Civils recently took delivery of a Rubble Master RM70 GO!, the first of its kind to go to work in the Eastern Cape. suited to our site conditions. Another important factor is that Pilot Crushtec’s area sales engineer, Mark Reeves, is always available when we need advice,” says Philip. Regional sales manager Nicolan Govender is delighted with the development as he believes Pilot Crushtec has gained a valuable foothold in what he regards as a high potential area. Nicolan is enthusiastic about the future as he believes that customers have the ideal product with which to capitalise on crushing opportunities in the Eastern Cape. “Inyathi Plant and Civils is a well-established family-owned company that has operated in the region for over 15 years. It is a very welcome addition to our customer network and we are looking forward to establishing a close working relationship,” says Nicolan. “It is a watershed period for the local building, crushing and civil engineering industries as a great deal of sorely-needed infrastructure is being created in the region. We are looking at numerous projects for roads, dams, medical facilities and schools and the Rubble Master’s versatility for processing rubble, asphalt, concrete and stone should keep it busy for some time to come.” Father and daughter team Philip Vermeulen and Nelani Kaiser bought the RM70 GO! to produce G5 material for a gravel road project in the Intsika Yethu Municipality. Philip had originally been in the market for a used crusher, however having seen an RM70 GO! in action at a site visit, he immediately opted for a new model. “This machine is something we have needed for a long time and its new control system means that the RM70 GO! is better Inyathi Plant and Civils’ latest acquisition is a potent and profitable crushing solution, possessing a throughput capacity of up to 120 tonnes per hour. InstalLink manager FP van der Merwe, who has over 16 years of field experience, knows that this type of work can only be carried out by a very special type of person. “InstalLink fitters and their assistants must have an extensive knowledge of boiler making and rigging and must at all times be aware that we have to complete the job to the customer’s satisfaction.” Plant installations can be time consuming, and while a relatively small operation can be set up within a matter of days, a bigger configuration can take up to two weeks before it is ready for operation. Our SupportLink team members have to be among the best-travelled people on the African continent, recording hundreds of thousands of kilometres annually in their never-ending quest to provide world class service to our customers. Newly-appointed SupportLink manager Kobus Joubert has almost 30 years of field support experience and knows exactly what it takes to provide our customers with the support they expect and deserve. Inyathi Plant and Civils recently purchased a RM70 GO!, the first of its kind to work in the Eastern Cape growing our footprint in the Northern Cape and North West provinces Some of our most dramatic gains have been in rural areas where the presence of a dedicated regional sales engineer makes all the difference in building the valuable relationships that are essential to good business. It has taken some time, but people now understand that we are here to look after the interests of all our customers, irrespective of their size.” His initial legwork has certainly paid dividends as a significant amount of Pilot Crushtec equipment has been sold to local customers over the past few months. Alluvial diamond mining specialist Steyn’s Diamante recently bought three Terex Finlay 883 heavy-duty mobile scalping screens while Vryburg Crushers has taken delivery of a complete modular plant with peripheral equipment for use in a major roads project. Another significant breakthrough was the first-time purchase of Pilot Crushtec equipment by OMV Crushers from Kimberly. The company bought a Terex Finlay C-1540 PRS cone crusher on the basis of its various features, price and immediate availability in order to produce urgently needed G2 road stone. Paul is very conscious that the majority of his customers are hands-on businessmen and women and that word of mouth communication is a powerful force in rural areas. “We try to make the point that we are here to provide solutions, not to make money in quick sales, and the back-up support provided by the service and spares departments has had a very positive influence on the good relationships we are building.” “On the skills side they have to have top class mechanical talent, knowledge of electronics and hydraulics and an ability to think on their feet as they are often operating a long way from base. They also have to bear in mind that they are travelling ambassadors for Pilot Crushtec,” says Kobus. The eight members of the SupportLink team share an awesome combination of practical experience and technical knowledge. The old hands have proved their worth all over southern Africa, while the youngsters are highly qualified and undergo a strenuous selection process before being appointed as field service technicians. One of the reasons behind Pilot Crushtec’s exceptional growth has been its ability to use the best communication channels available, and SupportLink is no exception. All of the technicians are provided with smartphones which enables them to hold conference calls and retrieve information electronically should they need help in the field. If push comes to shove they can also contact Rubble Master in Austria or Terex Finlay in Ireland direct from the site if they need specialist technical assistance. They are no strangers to either of these companies as they visit them regularly for training updates.
