CERC BOARD MEETING MINUTES
JUNE 11, 2013
This was the 117th luncheon at the Gazebo and the meeting was called to order by President Gil Opaleski at
1:55 pm.
In attendance were Gil Opaleski, Ed Verduin, Mal Hanson, Darrell Pawlowski, Ray Culbertson, Tom Zebehazy
and Mary Monden. Absent were Marion Teske, Nancy Bernhardt, and Joe Orlando.
The minutes of the April Board Meeting were read and approved as published in the Companion.
Old Business: Dick Verduyn has been released from the Hospital. It was discussed was if the Shirt Raffle
should be continued.
New Business: The new Golf schedule will be published.
Ray Culbertson reported the Luncheon food was the best quality and price available, seconded by Gil and ample parking approved by Ed .
Treasurer: Dick Verduyn was not in attendance.
Store: Mal Hanson suggested to use envelopes for monthly news letter to correct the damage problem. The
motion was seconded by Gil and Ed. The Store report from last meeting was given, as it had been omitted.
Companion Editor: Darrell Pawlowski presented the membership report for Joe Orlando in his absence.
Membership was 469 as of the April luncheon. It was reported that CERC membership now stands at 475,
the result of 5 reactivated members and 2 new members and the removal of one (Gene Babcock, deceased).
A CERC member asked Darrell if he could advertise a property for sale in the “Companion”. The request, and
ads in general, was discussed by the Board and was declined by the Board.
Because some CERC members have reported receiving the “Companion” in a damaged condition or receiving
only the first page (with address) Darrell proposed mailing in a 6 X 9 envelope rather than simply folding and
sealing each copy and proposed a trial run with the August issue. Darrell said that the Club would incur the
expense of the envelope, approximately $0.13/copy, based on the cost at Staples. Mal Hanson and Gil
Opaleski suggested checking prices at Sam’s Club or Costco. Mal asked if this would make the preparation for
mailing easier. Darrell feels that it would. The Board agreed to a trial run with results reviewed at the August
meeting.
Luncheon: Ray Culbertson reported that there were 115 prepaid and 17 complimentary lunches with 8 paying at the door for an expected attendance of 140. There were 15 no-shows with 125 meals served. The
Name Tag expense was $30.00 and after paying the Gazebo, there was a $156.00 Loss. With the $150.00 taken in by the Raffle the Total Loss was $6.00.
Webmaster: Tom Zebehazy reported 278 hits since April. The directory on the website is current with Joe Orlando's June 10th updates. The June Companion was e-mailed to 181 retirees
The meeting was adjourned at 3:07 pm.
Submitted by Mary Monden, Secretary.

The interest started when he was very young; neither dad or mom were racers, but there was a family interest in racing. They attended both of the major races at MIS as a family every year. He started running Quarter
Midgets when he was 5 years old and continued until he
was 14. At 14, he started running Sportsman (Pro Stock)
paved track, stock car racing and continues into this season. This is the background of the racing career of Travis
Skarvi, grandson of John and Mary Ann Jonas.
Travis started Quarter Midget racing at Waterford Hills
Road Racing Club, on the grounds of the Oakland County
Sportsman’s Club, the location that Don Burry spent many
years at (April 2013 issue of the “Companion”). Travis took
advantage of a Quarter Midget training program for youngsters at Waterford Hills. Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, Bobby
Labonte and Brad Keselowski are current top professional
drivers that got their start in Quarter Midgets.
The family bought 4 Quarter Midgets during Travis’ 9 years
of racing them. Travis progressed through the QMA Classes from Junior Novice through the World Formula Class.
Young drivers progress from Junior Novice to Senior Novice, these classes based on age and experience, Junior Honda to Senior Honda, these classes based on Vehicle and/or driver weight, Light to Heavy 160 and
World Formula Classes, these classes based on vehicle weight and increased displacement engines. Novice
and Honda classes use a 120 cc Honda engine, Light and Heavy 160 classes uses a 160cc Honda engine and
World Formula uses a Briggs and Stratton 200 cc engine. As a driver gains experience and age, the car(s) he
she drives must be upgraded or replaced with more powerful cars as they advance through the QM Classes.
THE EARLY DAYS
TRAVIS WITH MOM KIM AND DAD MARK
A typical racing season would include 8 Club (Point) races and 2 Fun (Test/Tune) races at Waterford, 3 Tri-City
(Saturday/Sunday) races at Lansing, Toledo and Waterford Tracks, and 5 Region 4 races (Michigan, Indiana
and Ohio, 2 day events) at Columbus, Ohio, Indianapolis, Lansing, Toledo and Waterford. Travis also competed in the 2008 Dirt Grands (Taylorville,Ill.),the 2009 Dirt
Grands (Terre Haute, Indiana ), and the 2009 Eastern
Grands at Huntsville, Alabama (which had over 500 cars entered from the US,Canada and Australia). The Grand Nationals are held at a selected Club each year. The Grand Nationals were held at Waterford Hills in 2012. Over 100 racers
participated.
Travis had a very successful Quarter Midget career. He set
records for Fastest Qualifying Time at Waterford for Heavy
160’s and World Formula and Fastest Qualifying Time for
World Formula at Toledo, records that have since been broken. At Waterford, in 2007 he placed 2nd in the Light 160
TRAVIS IN THE WINNERS CIRCLE IN 2008
and World Formula Classes; in 2008 1st in the Heavy 160 and
st
nd
st
1 in World Formula; in 2009 2 in the Heavy 160 and 1 in
World Formula. Also, in 2009 he placed 2nd in World Formula at the Eastern Grand Nationals.
When Travis was 14, in 2010, the family bought their first Sportsman race car, a 1978 Chevy Chassis/Body
(#17). The Sportsman class features cars that are either stock chassis or fabricated chassis with a home-built
7
body or a sleeker “template body” style. In his initial season, after 21 weeks of racing and a 5 th place in points,
Travis was named “Rookie of the Year” in the Sportsman Class at Owosso Speedway in Ovid, Michigan, the
track he primarily competes at. Owosso is a 3/8 mile high banked, paved oval track. Racing speeds are in the
area of 90 MPH.
Travis campaigned the same chassis and motor with
a new “templated” Body for the 2011 Race Season
and rebadged with #19. During the second Race of
the Season, the car was “T-boned”. New quarter,
hood, roof and door panels were installed, but it never handled well again.
For the 2012 season, the Skarvi family procured a
templated Body, Chassis and Motor from a team that
had used it for a few seasons at the Dixie Motor
Speedway North of Flint. The car got a new paint job
and was rebranded #60.
In 2012, Travis finished 2nd with 708 points (three 1st
place finishes). His top competitor had 845 points
(ten 1st place finishes). Travis was also awarded “Sportsman of the Year—the second time in his three (3)
years of stock car racing. Travis ran 15 out of 16 races at Owosso. Missing a weekend of racing results in missing an opportunity for points.
This Year, Travis is still racing the #60 Car and after two weeks of racing is fifth (5 th) in points. The pit crew has
to figure out why the car is slower than last year.
For those that might be interested, the
drivers are awarded points as follows:
Qualifying – The fastest Qualifier
receives 10 points, second fastest,
9 points, third fastest 8 points to 1
point for the 10th fastest. 11th and
slower receive no points.
Heat Race – Winner receives 10
points, second place 9 points with
each successive places receiving 1
point less to 1 point for 10th place.
Feature Race – Winner receives 50
points, second place 45 points,
third place 41 points and fourth
place 38 points. Each place from
TRAVIS WITH HIS CURRENT PRO STOCK CAR
fifth to eighth place drops back 2
points for each position, to 30 points for eighth. Each position from eighth to 23 rd receives one less
point, 15 points for 23rd. All finishers 23rd or worse receives 15 points.
8
Travis has a 3.5 Grade point average at Swartz Creek High School and, in addition to racing, plays Varsity Lacrosse and Tennis for Swartz Creek.
Travis’ life is at a crossroads; he graduates from Swartz Creek High School this June. As much as he wants to
continue racing, it’s very expensive. To continue and advance in the sport he needs sponsors. He also wants
to earn a Mechanical Engineering degree. So decisions must be made. The “Companion” wishes Travis the
best in his future pursuits, be they racing or education or, preferably, a combination of both.
Grandpa John is actively involved in Travis’ racing and on late Spring and Summer Saturdays you’ll find John
and Mary Ann at the Owosso Track.

JUNE 2013 LUNCHEON SPEAKER
Mr. Gerald Johnson, the Executive Director, Global Program Quality and Launch, was the CERC guest speaker
at the June Luncheon. Mr. Johnson provided an overview of the current GM operation and product line; his
theme was that you “need a great product to be a great Company” and that Quality is fundamental to the
product process.
The design process starts with Clinical Customer Data – “Customers are our Compass”; the goal to make customers “Life Time Partners”. Consumers Reports currently named 16 GM models as a “Recommended Buy”.
Cadillac is now rated as the most reliable brand. In the week of June 17, J.D. Power announced that GM
ranked first in Initial Quality,.
GM has had 13 consecutive profitable quarters since 2010. To effectively compete, GM designs for global
sales, resulting in high volume over the world. Around the world, the Chevrolet nameplate has a volume of 5
million units.
Mr. Johnson also reviewed the current GM product line. A 2013 Cadillac XTS4 and a 2014 Chevrolet Impala
were on display for our members to view.
We were also privileged to have Marsha Hall-Jenkins and
Daniel Wallace, the Retiree Communication Team, with
us at the meeting.
An update– On June 17, Mr. Johnson was named North
America Manufacturing VP, effective July 1.

A LITTLE HUMOR FROM A GOOD FRIEND—EDITOR
HELL OF A DAY
There I was sitting at the bar staring at my drink when a large, trouble-making biker steps up next to me, grabs my drink
and gulps it down in one swig.
"Well, whatcha' gonna do about it?" he says, menacingly, as I burst into tears. "Come on, man," the biker says, "I didn't
think you'd CRY. I can't stand to see a man crying."
"This is the worst day of my life," I say. "I'm a complete failure. I was late to a meeting and my boss fired me.
When I went to the parking lot, I found my car had been stolen and Idon't have any insurance. I left my wallet in the
cab I took home. I found my wife with another man... And then my dog bit me."
"So I came to this bar to work up the courage to put an end to it all, I buy a drink, I drop a capsule in and sit here watching the poison dissolve; and then you show up and drink the whole damn thing!
"But, Hell, enough about me, how are you doing?"

A QUOTE FROM “THE IRON LADY” MARGARET THATCHER FROM A GOOD FRIEND:
“The process of abandoning all beliefs, principles, values, and policies in search of something in which no one
believes, but to which no one objects; the process of avoiding the very issues that have to be solved, merely
because you cannot get agreement on the way ahead. What great cause would have been fought and won
under the banner: ‘I stand for consensus”?

A Note From Don Gothard:
Hi Darrell,
I thought I would give you a little update on my activities. I've just finished the winter Senior Volleyball season and I'm now moving into the softball season. I can't make the luncheon meetings because I'm always
playing ball on the days of your luncheons.
My volleyball team took first place in our division this year. I put the team together, played and managed. It
was a good team and we hope to be as successful next year. I'm the oldest on the team and our average age
of the team was 69. The league is for seniors over 55. We had six teams in our division. There are 3 divisions and we won division 2. The youngest seniors are in division 1 and there were 4 teams. The oldest are
in division 3 and it had 5 teams.
I enjoy reading the CERC Newsletter and seeing the pictures of many that I used to work with. I hope to
make a luncheon when there's a break between seasons or a rainout.
See you then,

ANOTHER “BEER THEORY” FROM WARNER BAUMGARTNER—THIS IS A CLASSIC
One night at Cheers, Cliff Clavin explained the" Buffalo Theory" to his buddy Norm:
"Well, ya see, Norm, it's like this. A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed
first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and
health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members! In
much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and
weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain
cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine! That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers.."
