Announcements. Opinions expressed
in any other articles are those of
the author of the article and do not
necessarily reflect Brigade policy.
The nation as a whole needs to own the events of the last week in all their
ugliness, as well as for all the heroism and humanity that was displayed in the face of
utterly disgraceful conduct on the part of some individuals. Only thus will we be able
to embrace the responsibility to understand how the society has produced citizens
capable of the scenes we witnessed and the conditions that gave rise to them taking
to the streets and conducting themselves in those ways.

the riots on the streets of London and other English cities in August.
I remember an article in the Gazette many years ago where the author asked
the reader to think about how many young people they had passed by on the way
to BB compared with the numbers they were working with.
How does society value those caught up in the recent unrest?
When birds are sold, two small birds cost only a penny. But not even one of the
little birds can die without your Father knowing it. God even knows how many
hairs are on your head. So don’t be afraid. You are worth much more than many
birds. Matthew 10 v 29-31
I believe that all young people are unique and of inestimable value. However, a lot
of young people seem to have little hope or aspiration and feel no stake in their
communities. We are members of a movement that values young people and brings
self-confidence and self-esteem, but in many cases we are not working with the most
disaffected and marginalised and there are areas where there is little or no BB presence.
Engage a Generation has been part of our on-going development for a number of
years. Let us all work together to engage with those young people who are in danger
of being a lost generation.

BB Camping, thousands
and thousands of you took
the opportunity to celebrate
and get away with your young
people and gain the special
commemorative badge and
certificate. Here we share
some of the camps and
holidays that have taken place
over the summer months.
1st Glasgow Camp
Current members, ex-members and friends of the 1st Glasgow celebrated the
125th Anniversary of their first camp with a special Thanksgiving Service on
Sunday 17th July at their campsite at Tighnabruaich. The Brigade President and
Secretary attended and Sir Kenneth presented the boys with 125 camping badges.
1st Wickham Market Camp
Boys and Officers of the 1st Wickham
Market enjoyed their Annual Summer Camp
at Felden Lodge in Hemel Hempstead (BB
Headquarters). During their week at camp
they visited Twickenham Stadium for a tour
and visit to the Museum of Rugby.

5th Croydon & 4th London Camp
Members of the Companies were joined
by members of 2nd Thornton Heath GB
for their Summer Camp to Freshwater on
the Isle of Wight from 23rd to 30th July.
10th Enfield Camp
Members of the 10th Enfield along with
a member from the 3rd Enfield Company
went to Jersey for their Annual Summer
Camp. During the week the young
people had the chance to do activities
including coasteering, blo-karting, ringo
rides, banana boat rides and go-karting
amongst other things.
1st Monifieth and 2nd Forfar Camp
Members of 1st Monifieth and 2nd Forfar

1st Grangemouth Weekend
Members of 1st Grangemouth at their
Company weekend at PGL Dalguise
House, near Dunkeld, Perthshire.
8th Falkirk Camp
Members of 8th Falkirk went to
Abderdeen for their Summer Camp.
2nd Turriff Camp
Members of 2nd Turriff at the summit
of Meall a Bhuachaille, 810m in height,
during their weekend camp at Loch
An Eilein near Aviemore.
14th Lanchester Camp
In July, 26 members of the 14th
Lanchester Company went to Broomley
Grange for their Annual Summer Camp.
15th Paisley Camp
The 15th Paisley Company returned to
the Scottish Education Outdoor centre at
Dounans, near Aberfoyle for a weekend
camp. After several months of fund raising
with bag packing, a sponsored walk and
overnight games night, 18 boys aged from
8 to 16 and their leaders attended camp.
Devon Battalion Camp
Members of the Devon Battalion enjoyed
ten days at Pembrey Country Park in
Carmarthenshire where they have been
camping for 25 years.
North West Kent Battalion Weekend
During the summer, Juniors from the
North West Kent Battalion took on a
swashbuckling Pirate weekend venture at
their Battalion campsite, Honeyhill, near
Maidstone. Joining Captain Jack on his
venture to find his stolen treasure, the
pirates went about solving clues around
the cove. They enjoyed pirate training,
making pirate outfits, eating chocolate
crows nests, and best of all, the best
of the summer weather in a number
of water activities. At the end of the
weekend, once the treasure had been
found, they received their 125 camping
badges and planted a prayer tree in its
place, which is hoped will bear lots of
juicy fruit in years to come.
Highland Battalion Camp
Officers and boys from 1st Culloden,
2nd and 6th/7th Inverness from the
Highland Battalion celebrate the 125th
Camp anniversary at Carrbridge, north
of Aviemore.
Belfast Battalion Service
The Belfast Battalion held a service at its
Ganaway Camp centre to celebrate the
125th Anniversary of Camping, when it
was standing room only for Old Boys and
friends in a marquee specially erected to
give a flavour of past days under canvas.
The inspiring service was led by the Revd
Jim Lemon, who had himself camped at
Ganaway as a boy and was followed by
a parade led by the familiar sounds of a
bugle band.
14th Croydon Camp
Members of the 14th Croydon camped at
Stoke Gabriel in Devon from 30th July to
6th August.

Scottish Government Minister visits 1st Ellon Camp
As part of the celebrations of the 125th Anniversary of Camping the Scottish Government’s
Minister for Children and Young People, Mrs Angela Constance MSP, visited the 1st Ellon
BB Company at its camp at Carrbridge. The Minister stayed overnight and joined the
boys in a Highland Games event as well as judging that morning’s tent inspection.
She said “I was honoured to take part in the celebrations and thoroughly enjoyed my night
under canvas and seeing for myself the enjoyment and the new skills that can be gained
from a Boys’ Brigade summer camp. It also gave me the chance to meet the dedicated
volunteers of the Company, without whom none of this could take place. We place great
importance on the role that youth work plays in expanding horizons, building confidence and
teaching new skills. The Boys’ Brigade has done this for thousands of young Scots over the
decades and I’m sure they will continue to improve lives for many generations to come.”
130th Glasgow Camp
In August, twenty boys from the 130th
Glasgow Company enjoyed five days
of activities at the Craggan Outdoor
Centre on the banks of Loch Tay.
3rd Trafford Camp
Members of the Company went across
the Channel to Limoges in France for
their Annual Summer Camp.
44th Aberdeen Camp
On 2nd July members of the Company
Section went to Orkney to stay in
the BB hall of 1st Kirkwall Company.
This is the 12th time the Company
has visited Orkney. On their way back
from camp the Company visited
Thurso, the birth place of the founder,
Sir William Alexander Smith.
1st Kirkintilloch Camp
13 Company section members along with
staff attended Rock UK Adventure centre
- Withaugh Park in Newcastleton in the
Scottish borders from 19-21st August 2011.
4th Scarborough Camp
Members of the 4th Scarborough went
to Melton Bottoms Scout Camp on
the outskirts of Hull for their very first
Company Camp.
72nd Birmingham Camp
13 boys and 7 leaders went to Dyffryn
Ardudwy, from the 23rd – 30th July.
The week included a range of activities
including cycling along the Mawddach
Cycle path, gorge walking & kayaking,
a night hike, and a BBQ on the beach
amongst others.
5th Glasgow Weekend
Company Section members camped
at the1st Glasgow campsite at Stillaig,
near Tighnabruaich, from Friday 17th
to Sunday 19th June 2011.
Leicester Companies at Camp
1st Loughborough BB/GB along with
the 22nd Leicester BB (East Goscote)
went to Mortehoe in North Devon at
the beginning of August.
1st Greenock Camp
27 boys and 8 staff from the 1st
Greenock camped at the Crow’s Nest
Campsite in Filey, North Yorkshire from
3rd to 15th of July.

he Future Inns Hotel in Cardiff
Bay provided the backdrop to
this year’s Brigade Council.
A new format meant that the meeting
was to take place on the Saturday
afternoon to enable those who
wished to travel there and back
on the day were able to do so.
Many guests made their own
arrangements on the Friday evening, but
the Chair of the Brigade Executive and
Brigade Secretary hosted an informal
meeting to allow members the opportunity
to raise concerns or ask questions. This
was a very constructive time and two
hours sped by sharing new initiatives and
exploring the work of the wider Brigade.
On Saturday morning there were
workshops available on Playwork, The
Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Membership
Services and ‘Engage a Generation’
run by members of the Brigade Staff.
Partners of Council members enjoyed a
walking tour of the Bay area, returning
for lunch at the hotel.
At lunch we were joined by the Deputy
Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Councillor Jayne
Cowan and the Deputy Minister for Skills
in the Welsh Assembly, Mr Jeff Cuthbert
AM. At the outset of the business meeting
our two guests, in welcoming Council
to Wales and to Cardiff, highlighted
the importance of the Brigade in local
communities stressing the difference it
makes in the lives of young people. Mr
Cuthbert presented five Queen’s Badges
to recipients from Wales. The business
of Council was transacted and the
decisions made are reported elsewhere
in the Gazette.
This was the farewell Council for the
Brigade President who was standing
down after four years in office. Sir Kenneth
was presented with mounted images of
the isle of Arran and in recognition of his
service was made an Honorary President
of The Boys’ Brigade. In his closing
remarks Sir Ken highlighted many of the
events he had attended and the young
people and leaders he had met.
On the Saturday evening guests were
entertained at a Murder Mystery Dinner
and for those staying for the weekend,
morning worship was led by Revd Nigel
James, Chaplain BB Wales,
reminding us of the true
purpose of the Brigade in
posing the question to our
members that Jesus asked
the Disciples, “Who do you
say I am?”
Thanks are extended to all
members of the planning
group from the BB in Wales
whose efforts ensured that all
of the events ran smoothly.

Protecting our fields for future generations
F
resh air, sports, games, camp fires, canvas...this year The Boys’
Brigade has been celebrating 125 years of that iconic activity –
the BB camp. Many things go into making a successful camp, but
a pretty important one is the site itself. No matter what the weather’s like,
if the sites were not there, it would be quite hard to have a successful camp!
And that’s where Fields in Trust comes in. On 20th October it will be 500 days
since the launch of the Queen Elizabeth II Fields Challenge.
What’s the Queen Elizabeth II
Fields Challenge?
It’s an opportunity to get 2,012 outdoor recreational
spaces protected for future generations by the end
of 2012. This helps ensure communities have
access to green space, giving them a green
heart and helping to encourage children and adults
to get out and get active. The Challenge will also
build a tangible legacy for next year’s big events –
HM The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the 2012 Olympics.
Fields in Trust has been incredibly privileged to be supported by their Paton HRH
The Duke of Cambridge over the past year and in April The Duke and Duchess of
Cambridge visited Witton Country Park in Blackburn on their last official engagement
before their wedding. The Duke commented on the Challenge: “Being able to play
outdoors is a basic right of childhood. The Queen Elizabeth II Fields will guarantee
that millions more children are able to enjoy that right both now and in the future.”
Have a look at this field in Norfolk, which received protection from Fields in Trust:
“We want everyone to feel a part of the London Olympics and the Diamond Jubilee
next year. Getting involved with the Queen Elizabeth II Fields Challenge is a great
way of doing this,” Alison Moore-Gwyn, Chief Executive of Fields in Trust, said.
Fields in Trust are calling on landowners to put
their spaces up for nomination to be protected.
So far they’ve got over 700 covering an area equivalent to more than 5000 football
pitches. There’s something for everyone: whether you fancy a Robert-Burns celebrated
Scottish woodland walk, a coastal path in Kent or the venue for the World Alternative
Games in Britain’s smallest town, Llanwrtyd Wells.
How can you and
your Company
join in?
Become a challenger! You and
your Company can get involved in
a number of ways
– Vote! On 20 October, you can vote
on www.qe2fields.com for sites
to be protected.
– Write! Contact your local authority
to make sure they’ve nominated
some sites. You can check first on
our website to see what they’ve put
forward. You might want to get a
petition together, or there’s a handy
call to action card which you can
print off for people to fill in.
– Pictures! If you’ve got any pictures
of yourselves on a QEII nominated
field, do send them in. It good to
see people enjoying the spaces
protected by Fields in Trust!
– Volunteering! You can volunteer on
the Fields in Trust website to help out
in your local spaces, but why don’t
you organise a group of people to
do it? You could spend a day doing
it, or go along on a regular evening.

!

hat’s not the kind of thing you hear every day. I put
down the phone, jumped into the car (a BMW I was
looking after for a friend… really I was) and drove
down to see what I could do. Being a largish chap, 6
foot something and of sizeable frame (!) I was generally
the first person called if there was any sign of
trouble at the ‘rootless and homeless
project’ we ran at the church.
When I arrived, it was clear that
this bloke, (let’s call him Steve),
had indeed been hit on the head
with a hammer. He was in pain and
there was blood freely flowing.
After a quick assessment I
bundled him into the car
having decided that a local
minor injuries unit was the
best place for him. With
towel round his head
both to stop the bleeding
and protect the BMW we
drove to the hospital.
I didn’t know Steve.
He didn’t know me. After
finding out that he’d been
smacked on the head by a
bloke who was unhappy
about something that
happened a few days
earlier, with a girl, we
chatted generally about
his life. I’ll never forget
that moment. In just a
few minutes, he told me his
life story and up until the age
of 16 his life and my life had been so
similar. Both of us had come from a broken home,
living with a stepfather who ruled with aggression, both
being great at sport, but also a bit of a fool at school.
And much more.
But years later here was I, driving a BMW, having left my tied
house and paid job to pick up Steve who lived rough, smoked
cannabis, and who’d just been hit with a hammer.
Steve was treated at the hospital, gave a statement to the
police and I never saw him again.
But what struck me was how much our lives were the same
until a certain age. When he’d been pretty much abandoned,
I’d had a community of a local church to look after me.

Whether it be holidays, camps, weekends away, invitations to
lunch, special events, weddings, paying for my driving lessons
and much more, there were a whole host of BB officers, youth
leaders and folks within
the church who took
care of me. The
truth is that had
it not been for
their love,
care and
support
I am not
sure my
life would’ve
been much
different to Steve.
Perhaps it would have
been me with a hole
in my head and a drug
habit, I don’t know.
What I DO know is that
you, as a BB officer, or
member of the team, make
a difference. Every young
person you support, love, care
for, may not be days or weeks
away from sleeping rough, or
starting a drug habit, but they
need your time, energy and
devotion to help them get the
most from life. The recent riots
across the UK have reminded
us that many have such empty lives
that kicking in a shop window, looting
some stuff or setting a car on fire relieves the
boredom of daily life.
On that car journey with Steve bleeding from a hole the
size of a hammer in his head I realized that what youth
leaders, BB staff, and many more do is change the pattern of
people’s lives. I praise God for those who helped shape me,
challenge me, encourage me, stand with me, and love me,
so that I found Jesus Christ.

What’s been happening?
January 2011 saw the official start of the Get up and Go Project, and since then we
have heard from Companies who have been getting involved in one way or another.
Companies have been making use of the resources and raising awareness whilst also
raising lots of money with thousands being raised for the project’s partner charities.
Fundraising efforts have included sponsored walks, a sponsored table tennis event, a
coffee morning, bible class collections and taking part in the Asthma Kick Mini-Marathon.

We want to encourage Companies to
raise funds for our partner charities, but

helping members of The Boys’ Brigade

more about the chosen charity, their
cause, and how they are making a
difference. It’s a great chance to learn
and spread the message.
• Raising money: Funds raised will go
to your chosen charity to help them in
their work. Find out what a difference
fund raised will make!
• Getting involved: This provides
opportunities to take a direct
approach and create change through
campaigning and volunteering.

to support your Company through giving
a presentation/talk, helping organise
events and offering opportunities for your
young people to get involved through
volunteering. Some charities also have
shops operating in town centres across
the country, so you could pop in and find

BRIGADE COUNCIL BUSINESS,

Cardiff conducted the opening service.
The Brigade President, Professor Sir Kenneth
Calman KCB, read a message
of greeting that had been sent to our Patron,
Her Majesty The Queen on behalf of Council.
Council then stood to receive Her Majesty’s reply.
Members of Council were welcomed to Cardiff by
Councillor Jayne Cowan, Deputy Lord Mayor and
to Council by Mr David Aubrey QC. The Brigade
President replied and welcomed members and
guests and thanked the organising committee.
Mr Jeff Cuthbert AM, Deputy Minister for Skills,
National Assembly for Wales, presented Queen’s
Badges to young people from Wales who had
gained the award.
Members of the Brigade who had died
in the past year were remembered.
Brigade announcements
Following discussion a vote was taken. There were 120 votes in favour
and 54 votes against. The motion was carried.
Whiting & Partners were reappointed as auditors of The Boys’ Brigade
and the Brigade Executive was authorised to fix their remuneration.
Mr David Richmond proposed and Mr Michael Elliott seconded the
following Brigade Office Bearers for the 2011/12 Session who were
approved by Council.

Council was invited to London in 2012 by Ashley Lampard and
Emmanuel Mensah.
The outgoing President, Professor Sir Kenneth Calman KCB, addressed
Council reflecting on his period in office. A presentation of photographic
images of the Isle of Arran was made to Sir Kenneth on behalf of the Brigade.
Council closed with worship led by The Rev’d Darren Middleton, Chaplain
31st Cardiff.
Minutes of Council held in 2010 in Armagh, which
had been circulated, were approved by Council.
Mr Chris Row and Mr Perry Donaldson, Brigade
Vice Presidents, presented the Annual Report
for the session 2010/11 highlighting the
achievements of young people in the year of
stability and consolidation.
Mr Clifford Bygrave, Brigade Treasurer, presented
the Annual Accounts for the year ended 31
March 2011. Mr Bygrave highlighted several
key matters including an operating surplus of
£28,565 after paying pension fund contributions
of £95,760 and recognising fund transfers.
Mr Bygrave then went on to highlight his
policy for the present financial year where the
Executive has budgeted to cater for the ongoing
requirements of the pension scheme deficit.
Mr Leslie Buttimer, Brigade Executive, seconded
the presentation. Council received the accounts.

arrangements for London in 2012.

Norfolk Battalion
Boys of the 4th Norwich and 10th Norfolk Suffolk Companies at their
“Going Bananas” funday, possibly making the longest banana split in
the world (5.5m) – thirty bananas, bags of ice-cream, squirty cream,
choc chips and chocolate sauce and every bit eaten up afterwards.
Paisley & District Battalion
Members of the Paisley & District Battalion who recently
received President’s Badge certificates and Duke of
Edinburgh’s award certificates from Mr Guy Clark, HM
Lord-Lieutenant of Renfrewshire and Battalion President,
Mr Campbell McGregor.
1st Stewarton
Company and Senior Section members
of 1st Stewarton raised £200 for the Clic
Sargent charity, which specialises in the
care of children and young people with
cancer and their families. The boys raised
the money by putting their loose change
from the tuck shop into a charity box.

Joshua Shaw, an Anchor Boy in 2nd
Bedford Company, is a type 1 diabetic
and £80 was raised from a collection
at the annual parents’ evening towards
the charity JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes
Research Foundation).

Alfie Whelan, the youngest member
of 1st Rotherham, won his category in
the Yorkshire & Humberside District
web competition.
Members of the 1st Cheslyn Hay attended
the open evening of Cheslyn Hay Primary
School and put up a recruitment and
information display for the parents and
children. The Company also managed
to develop links not only with the school
but other local community organisations.

Wanderers’ mascot, who showed a
healthy interest in joining the BB.
1st Ardstraw
Over a twelve month period the boys of 1st Ardstraw won a total of nine trophies at
Battalion, N. Ireland District and National levels. The events included indoor bowls,
table quizzes, 5-a-side football, stool ball, volley ball and 10-pin bowling. Seven
boys gained Queen’s Badges and seven other boys President’s badges and a
number of boys were presented with Duke of Edinburgh’s Silver and Bronze awards.
Pride of place goes to winning the National under sixteen 5-a-side football.
1st Thatcham
Phoenix Dewdney of 1st Thatcham has
been elected a Town Councillor. He was
presented with the Arthur Smith Memorial
Trophy for his community work by Mayor
Lee Dillon at the Company’s Annual
Presentation of Awards Evening.
1st Perth
Dedication of Bench
On Saturday 4th June family and friends,
together with members of the Hertfordshire
Battalion and the Brigade Executive
gathered at Felden Lodge to dedicate a
seat to the memory of Jean and Geoffrey
Harris, who between them had given 118
years of service to The Boys’ Brigade.
Members of 1st Perth enjoyed an evening
with “Angling for Youth Development”
where they learned to cast a rod and
catch fish. The young people enjoyed
learning new skills and hope to put them
into practice in the near future.

1st Bearsden
Seniors of 1st Bearsden raised £600 for
Help for Heroes by organising and hosting
a Burns’ supper.
1st Uxbridge
The 1st Uxbridge Company raised £924 for ‘Sue Ryder Care’ by holding a sponsored real
life game of Monopoly in London. The journey included bus, train, tube and a lot of walking.
The Brigade Secretary was the chief guest
at the Company’s Annual Inspection
and Display where five Queen’s Badges
were presented by Mrs Morag Hart MBE,
Depute Lieutenant of Dunbartonshire.
11th Enfield
Members of 11th Enfield completed a
40km sponsored bike ride to raise funds
for a new minibus to comply with the
London Emission Zone.
Three of the boys were recently also
awarded with President’s Badges.
2nd Bracknell
Lurgan & District
With one of their own (Iain Duncan, a
former boy and officer in the Company)
serving with the Marines in Afghanistan,
members of 2nd Bracknell have been
filling and sending shoeboxes to him
and his colleagues.
The Lurgan & District Battalion football
team won the Northern Ireland Region
U14 Inter-Battalion Shield for the first time.

Company Sections took part in a minimarathon in aid of Asthma UK in May. The
Company Section boys attempted (between
them) to run a marathon, but ended up
running two and a half marathons! They are
passing on £412.48 directly to Asthma UK.

The Mid Southern England Battalion took
part in 34 competitions and activities
during the BB year, the final one being
their Sports Day at the Spectrum
Guildford. The Battalion Trophy was
awarded to 2nd Alton with 176 points;
1st Fleet were two points behind and
2nd Fleet were in third place with only
15 points between first and last place.

made the 4500 mile journey to
Kenya to work with The Boys’
and Girls’ Brigade at Oloolua.
D
uring the stay the entire
school was painted inside
and out, a safe playing area
provided for the children and the
recently built unit for children with
disabilities was decorated. The
school grounds were landscaped
and guttering added to all of the
buildings to collect water to supply
the gardens and toilets.
The party spent ten days directly
working at the school and the
empowerment of the local community
was a priority at all times. The school
which opened in 2009 with 15
pupils now educates 120 and there
are future plans to develop three
micro farming projects on the site.
The visit came to an end with the
presentation of a table tennis table,
sewing machines, football tops and
other sports equipment to The Girls’
and Boys’ Brigade and the knowledge
that the greatest gift of all is love.

Parliament
At the invitation of the Presiding Officer a
contingent from the Brigade took part in
the procession to mark the opening of the
Parliament by Her Majesty the Queen on
1st July. Participants were treated to lunch
and also had the opportunity to meet the
different party leaders and have a tour of
the parliament building. It was also good
to see the Brigade featuring prominently
in the live TV coverage of the event.

handwriting two verses from the Bible. The People’s Bible is a project being run throughout
the country by the Scottish Bible Society and colleagues in England and Wales. In time,
all the verses will be created in digital format and made available on the web.
Berlin 2011
Towards the end of June, a large
group of Seniors and young Leaders
from around Scotland descended
on the German capital Berlin. BB
Scotland arranged for the group
to spend three days exploring
and enjoying the amenities and
attractions of the city. Among many
highlights were the Brandenburg
Gate, Potsdammer Platz, taking the
lift to the top of the TV Tower and, in particular, the evening visit to the dome above
the German Parliament, the Reichstag. The group was also challenged with some
evening team activities, when, among other things, their ability in the local patter
was put to test!
Key to any foreign trip is sampling the local
cuisine and on both evenings the group was
served traditional German fayre.
Overall, it was an excellent couple of days
when dozens of Seniors and young BB
Leaders met up and visited one of the most
lively and interesting cities in Europe.
A reception to mark the European Year
of Volunteering was held at Carronvale
on Monday 15th August. During the
evening a bench and lectern both of
which had been donated in memory of
the late Norman Batty were dedicated
and gifted to Carronvale House.
Carnoustie Bus
Members of the 1st Carnoustie Company
assisted with the renovation of an open
top bus, which they have been using at
local galas and other events to promote
the work of the BB.
“The trip to Berlin was amazing. Over the course of the three days, we had great
fun and saw all the sights. It was worth bringing a camera as there were a lot
of monuments we visited such as the Berlin wall, Checkpoint Charlie and the
Reichstag. There was also plenty of free time in which we could go to shops and
explore Berlin by ourselves. The guys on the trip were a great laugh and everyone
got on well and it was interesting meeting people from all over Scotland. The
challenges we did were also good as we picked up a bit of the language and
some tasks were quite funny. Overall, the trip was terrific and I hope to get on
the trip to another city next year!”

The 11th Dublin Company marked its 20th Anniversary with a Parents’ and Friends’
Evening, when the Young People gave a display of the physical activities and arts
and crafts they learned during the year. A video depicting significant events in the
company’s history was shown by the Captain, Gordon Condell, and the guest of
honour was Colin Deegan, founding Captain of the Company.

Fantasy Football
The England Region Young People’s group
is running a fantasy football competition, starting on the 1st October and
running until the end of the season. The competition is open to all members
and you can join national, District and Battalion leagues. Individual Company
leagues can also be set up by Companies.
Members sign up on an individual basis as opposed to signing up as
a Company, so it’s important that each member is informed about this
competition for them to have the opportunity to join in the fun! The full

Not the words we thought
would describe our Company
and Senior Section members,
but they did and still do!
5th Hull had previously used the
YOF (Youth Opportunity Fund) to
access money for band instruments
and when the next round of funding
became available we asked around
the youngsters to find out what they
would want. Someone mentioned a
minibus and although it seemed like
a dream and so unlikely, we thought
it’s worth a form!
Research indicated we would need
about £35000 for a bus with wheelchair
access, essential for a BB Company
with a high number of SEN and
disabled youngsters. A group of five
young people got together to write the
application, as part of the YOF and
YCF (Youth Capital Fund) involved
young people leading the application
process. Paige Savage, then aged 16,
headed up the process and wrote an
exciting bid, supported by the staff
and Company members.
Two months passed and we heard
nothing. Then out of the blue a phone
call asked if we would be happy with
a minibus that was a couple of years
old and were we available to give
a presentation to argue our case?
The team of five wrote and learnt their
own presentation, came up with an
environmental proposal and gave an
amazing panel presentation to a group
of young people and council staff at a
local hotel. The panel said afterwards
that they had no questions as they were
so impressed with the standard.
A few weeks later we found out
that we had been given the largest
amount allocated in that band of
funding and 75% of our original request.
Three months later, one hour before
awards night, our minibus arrived and
it has proved invaluable since, both
to 5th Hull and to the other local
groups who borrow it! We can now
transport wheelchair users in comfort
as well as giving lifts here, there
and everywhere!
Thanks go to the team of Paige
Savage, Kayleigh Overton, Liam Kitto,
Phil Ellarby and Alice Sullivan who
brought a 5th Hull dream to reality.

he Boys’ Brigade and Girls’
Association in Birmingham
is committed to building up
relationships with our members and
providing a Christian environment
in which we can deliver our
programmes. However, due to
financial restraints and funding being
withdrawn, we were challenged to
think of how we could try to support
and provide opportunities for our
young people and in doing so
create jobs for some of the 25% of
18-25 year olds who are currently
unemployed in Birmingham.
On 16 November 2009 we opened
our Charity Shop in the central
shopping square in Erdington, a
suburb north of Birmingham. We had
been given the shop rent free for a trial
period of six weeks and the shop was
managed by Mick Reaney, assisted by
a few volunteers.
We had a good supply of donated
books and small items and the first
six weeks came and went. We

continuing and they gave us the shop

on a twelve month rent free period,

lleaving us to pay the rates.
By December 2010 we were not only
making money, but the profile of our
movement increased significantly. We
had our own ‘telesales team’, employed
through the Future Jobs Fund; they
phoned businesses asking for donations
of items for the shop, which proved to
be a huge success. At the end of 2010
we managed to secure another twelve
months at a very reasonable rent. We
now sell clothes along with books and
our takings have increased. We have a
‘man and a van’ on a trial period, who
picks up full black bags of clothes.
We have also started a‘Recycling
Business’. This social enterprise not only
creates opportunities and jobs for young
people in Birmingham by working in the
Recycling Business, but in Africa too. It
pays a wholesaler who employs market
stall holders, ironing assistants, a tailor
to make alterations and drivers to deliver
around the villages. We are currently
producing a sound business investment
prospectus and seeking a unit to develop
the business side of our activities.
We have also had an amazing response
from churches to hold a ‘Caring &
Sharing Sunday’. We provide church
congregations with a black bag and
information about our project a week
before the arranged collection date and
the filled bags are collected on ‘Caring
& Sharing Sunday’.
Ponder these interesting facts:• 90% of all clothes purchased in the
UK are imports.
• The UK buys 2,066,000 tonnes of
clothes. (Estimated value in excess
of £34,000,000,000)
• Of this tonnage 52% (1,081,000
tonnes) is thrown away in landfill.
• UK rubbish bins are filled with over
one million tonnes of textiles every year.
• Although the UK public purchase
2,066,000 tonnes of new clothes each
year, only 498,000 tonnes is recycled.
That is just 24%! In other words, an
average UK person buys £600 of clothes
a year and throws away £300 worth.
• It takes 800 litres of water to make just
one t-shirt, so recycling and re-using
clothes is excellent for the environment,
especially considering that 90% of
clothes are made and imported from
countries in the world where water is
a precious commodity.
Our shop and recycling business
help to fund that vital work with our
young people in our companies and
also by creating jobs both here in
Birmingham and in Third World
countries. We want to grow, but most
of all we want to make a difference.

uring July, BB Seniors
S
and young Leaders, from various parts
of the UK, formed a crew for a week long voyage aboard a
70ft ocean-going yacht.
The voyage on Ocean Youth Trust Scotland’s Alba Venturer took them as far
west as the Irish coast and throughout the firth of Clyde. During the week, the
responsibility of keeping such a large boat functioning fell to everyone on board.
Every crew member took their turn at a variety of tasks, from being responsible
for navigation to steering the yacht and even cooking lunch.
At times it was challenging, but the week provided an incredible learning
experience, where team work was essential. The BB crew impressed so much
that the OYT Scotland staff decided to take a supervisory role for one day and
left the running of the yacht to the young people!
The voyage was not always plain sailing! At times, the crew faced rough
seas, long passages and sea sickness. Despite this, they enjoyed the
experience immensely.

For myself, I was a me mber of the 1st Bea rsden, first as
a Life Boy a nd then in the Compa ny Section u ntil the age of
13, when I left to attend boa rding school. I lea rnt the dru ms

of Lothia n a nd Borders Police, with responsibility for all policing
in Edinburgh. I was Chief Consta ble of Du mfries a nd Galloway
Consta bula ry from 2001-2007, before retu rning to my cu rrent
post of Chief Consta ble of Lothia n a nd Borders Police.

both Captains, in the case of my gra ndfather, for nea rly 20
yea rs (1926-1945).

Global Fellowship:
Young Leaders’ Workshop
– South Africa
I
was lucky to be able to attend on behalf of BB
UK and R of I a workshop in Johannesburg run
by Global Fellowship. The theme was, ‘Where
is my brother and who is my sister?’ based on
Genesis Chapter 4 verse 9.
We started the week on Sunday with a visit to a local
church service and the new Boys’ Brigade Company there.
We marched to the church with the band and Company
where they were enrolled by the BB SA President. It was a
good chance to meet some local people and some of the
boys from the Company.
The participants on the workshop reflected the reach
of BB across the world with participants from Finland,
Denmark, Uganda, Gambia, Ghana, Uganda, Rwanda,
Zambia, Swaziland and South Africa. We quickly got
to know each other through ice breakers, team sports,
board games and lots of tea and coffee.
It was interesting as we swapped stories and
experiences to find similarities and differences of the
challenges we faced as young people and leaders
today. We discussed topics as varied as youth
participation to teamwork to culture and identity.
Visits to the Apartheid museum, the house of Nelson
Mandela and the Hector Peterson museum provided us with
a more sobering look at the recent history of South Africa,
but the visits left us all uplifted by the tale of human adversity
triumphing over injustice and fear.
Other activities included a night drive through
Johannesburg to see its vibrant nightlife and a visit to a
Soweto preschool where we joined in activities with the
children and heard the inspiring life story of ‘Ma’. All in all it
was a fantastic trip, which has left me with fantastic memories
of people and places and new friends from across the globe.

The Seniors of the 1st Bearsden Company broke
a series of records to be crowned Grand
Champions at this year’s Scottish Robotic
Games, held at engineering firm Selex Galileo’s
headquarters in Edinburgh. Entering the games
for the first time, the team and its robot, Bee-Bee One,
held off stiff competition from forty-three other robots
from as far afield as Thurso and even Northern Ireland.
Each participating robot must compete in three of four
tournaments: tug-of-war or sumo wrestling, 2-a-side
football and an assault course. The 1st Bearsden
progressed to the second round of the sumo wrestling
and the quarterfinals of the football, but it was in the main
assault course competition that the team and robot shone.
After progressing to the last eight, Bee-Bee One knocked
out its rival competitors one by one before clinching the
title of Assault Course Champion with an exceptional time
of 36 seconds. With the rest of the competitors in the other
tournaments failing to surpass the score set by the 1st
Bearsden, the team was duly declared Grand Champions.
The boys from Bearsden also picked up the award for
Best Newcomer to complete a hat-trick of trophies.
Lance Corporal Keith Shand, who drove
Bee-Bee One in the football tournament
said, “It was really exciting taking part in
the Scottish Robotic Games for the first
time and to win it was just awesome”.
Working on the project from January,
the Seniors built Bee-Bee One completely
from scratch as part of the Rampaging
Chariots scheme, which aims to encourage
those under 18 to take an interest in
engineering. The construction involved
mastering woodwork and metalwork skills
to create the chassis and learning how to
assemble and solder the electrical circuit
boards that are used to drive the remote
control robot. The Seniors now plan to
make some upgrades to Bee-Bee One
and complete the accompanying
Bee-Bee Two robot in preparation for
defending their title at next year’s games.

URBAN BUDDIES
The Birmingham Battalion has recently secured funding in excess
of £80,000 for an exciting outreach project called ‘Urban Buddies’.
T
he aim of Urban Buddies is
to recruit 150 new members
into The Boys’ Brigade &
Girls’ Association in Birmingham
who, through no fault of their own,
cannot attend a BB/GA evening.
The scheme can accommodate
children of all ages but is aimed
primarily at 5-11 year olds.
The children, from socially
disadvantaged backgrounds, will be
transported to and from a Company
which has been properly assessed
and matches the children’s needs
and interests. The first children started
attending Companies at the beginning
of September, and so far around
a quarter of Companies within the
Battalion have signed up to participate
in the project.
The scheme is thought to be unique
in terms of providing an opportunity
to help a wide range of young people
within the community, particularly those
where parents or family members are in
prison. The Battalion will be working with
a number of organisations and agencies
including Barnardo’s, Social Services
and the Prison Service.

K
al Davis of the 1st Coatbridge Company
was presented with the President’s
Commendation by John Neil, OBE, Brigade
Honorary President, on 13th May 2011. Kal was
awarded the commendation for the courage he
shows and the challenges he faces and overcomes.
Despite his health difficulties Kal, who has been a
member of the 1st Coatbridge Company since joining
the Anchors, takes part in all activities within the
Company, including weekend camps. He has gained
his President’s Badge and is currently working
towards gaining his Queen’s Badge.
Kal is a loyal and dedicated member of the Company.
His efforts, achievements and loyalty have remained
constant and his positive, cheerful attitude and
enthusiasm is an inspiration to all who know him.
He is a credit to himself and his family and the
Brigade is proud to have him as a member.
A MESSAGE FROM
AFGHANISTAN
Company Section members from 35th Aberdeen
Company packed 200 shoe boxes of toiletries,
tins of food and sweets in just under two hours
at their local Tesco store. The shoeboxes were
despatched to serving personnel in Afghanistan
in time for Christmas and the following response
was received from a soldier.

in the invitation for FDF´s national camp in July 2011,
which takes place every five years. More than 12000
children and leaders attended the beautiful camp site
surrounded by forests, hills and lakes. One week in tents,
trying to implement the two keywords in the daily life at
the camp – what a challenge!
Some had prepared tools before coming to the camp.
Groups came with self-constructed solar panels, with kind
of wheels for recharging mobile phones etc.
The Danish Queen opened the camp by emphasizing the
importance of having volunteer organisations in a society.
On some days activities were run in small local groups and
other days everyone came together as they did during the big
evening service in the open air. The service and the morning
devotions had the same keywords: Science and Faith, and
there was even a new hymn written with that theme.
One of the days was called “Innovation Day” and some
top leaders from Danish industry (e.g. Lego) were invited to
participate. On paper it seemed to be an impossible task to
activate 12000 children at the same time, but within a few
hours all groups were eager to come up with new ideas, to
create new solutions to old problems.
FDF has a long tradition of running projects in other
countries, especially in Africa and India and, therefore, it was
quite obvious that the innovation day should start with these
countries. The challenge for the participants was: “Why is
90 % of the production in the world designed to 10 % of the
world population? Try to design something new and useful
for the last 10%. You can use material from the boxes, (which
had different items provided by business companies), you
can draw, make a video, build a model or whatever, but
within three hours you have to come up with a new product.”
It became an amazing experiment with a lot of good ideas,
which have been taken back to business companies and
Danish Church Aid.
The camp had around 500 guests from all over the
world: BB UK, Hong Kong, Uganda, Zambia and many
other countries. They also participated in the programme,
were hosted by Danish groups and had the opportunity to
meet each other in the international tent. At this time FDF
is running a project with Zambia called: ‘Everybody has the
right for food’. The national camp has always been a good
place for information about projects of this kind and also a
good opportunity to collect money for such projects. All the
collected money at camp went to the project in Zambia.
The young people and leaders left the camp in cold rain,
but hopefully with a lot of warm feelings: new friends, new
ideas, new motivation for continuing back in their local groups.
BB WALKS
Waltham Walk 2011
The annual event took place in May with a good number
of entries. It proved to be a great success and there
was some good rivalry between the teams.

his year’s Hike took place on 25/26 June
and the 200 competitors completed
approximately 34 miles.
The Hike started at Whitby Rugby Club on Saturday and
finished at Danby Village Hall on Sunday. It was good to
see the encouragement the teams gave each other.
The awards and certificates were presented to the teams
by Graham Garbett and Revd Susan Greenwood.

Kilbryde Hike 2011
T
he 2011 event, starting in Singular and
finishing in Crawford John, was one of the
toughest, coldest and wettest in recent years
and covered approximately 33 miles. Thirty-six
teams (120 boys and girls) aged between 12-18
took part.
Teams were challenged to test their physical and mental
capabilities at checkpoints along the way. The weather
was challenging too, which included heavy downpours
and on Sunday morning ice had to be shaken from tents.
The winner of this year’s hike was the 1st EK Athletic
Team with the 25th Stirling BB Team a very close second.
So close in fact that there was one point in it! Third place
was taken by the 1st West Kilbride BB Team. The 25th
Stirling BB Team was consoled by taking Expedition
Class and the Junior Hike Trophy.
Next year’s event takes place on the second weekend

We had a well attended, interesting and enjoyable
Council Meeting in Eastbourne last May thanks to to
John Donoghue and his team from Brighton and Hove
Association who worked to make it a success.
The debating at the Council Meeting raised issues that
merit further discussion. A paper will be issued shortly
for discussion at our next meeting.
Sadly, our membership has not continued to grow and
in addition we have lost two associations.
There are suggestions about other Associations joining
with us, but the difficulty seems to be in putting these
into action. We have to find a way for action and
development. It seems to me that the best way forward
is in personal contact with other BB past members to
encourage them to form their own Associations and
then join the Federation.

RON ADSHEAD joined the 33rd Manchester
Company as an officer and then served as
Captain for more than 25 years. He was a Vice
President in the Manchester Battalion before
becoming the President from 1977 to 1985.
When the Battalion badly needed a Secretary, he
volunteered to undertake this role for two years.
Ron served on the committee of the Manchester
Stedfast Association and was Chairman for
several years. When the Federation was formed,
he became its first treasurer as well as its Vice
Chairman and Chairman as well as taking on the
role of Editor for “FedNews”. The success of the
Federation owes much to Ron’s efforts. Discipline
and loyalty came naturally to him. Ron and his
fine example to others will be missed.
STEVE WORKMAN, (32) was a boy in the 1st
Tewkesbury Company and in recent years came
back to assist in the Junior & Company Sections
of the Company. Despite health problems from an
early age, he was always cheerful and supported
and encouraged the boys at competitions and
events. He will be sorely missed by the many
people who were privileged to know him.
JACK FALLON, (86) was a Life Boy, and came
up through the BB in Leith. He became involved
with the 43rd Edinburgh Company and in 1961
was one of the founder members of the 65th
Edinburgh (Currie) Company. He was Captain of
the 65th from 1962-1975 and again for a year in
1987 before being appointed Honorary Captain
in 1989. His career as a civil servant took him
to Lytham St Annes where he was involved with
the 3rd Lytham St Anne’s Company. He helped
define the BB experience for many boys over the
years and is fondly remembered by them.
