BYINGTON WINERY TOUR,
TASTING AND LUNCH
By Eva Gordon
What: When:
Where:
Cost: Byington Winery Tour, Tasting and Lunch, Los Gatos
Saturday September 21, Noon
Byington Winery, 21850 Bear Creek Road, Los Gatos
$45 per person
Please join us for a day of wine and fun in the Los Gatos hills at the
Byington Winery. We will begin our day with a tour of the winery and a
tasting and then enjoy a picnic style lunch in the gardens. This is open to
all club members and their guests. Guests must be at least 15 years old.
A bit of history about the winery--Bill and Mary Byington purchased 95
mountainous acres surrounded by redwood forests as a family retreat in
1958. In the early 1970s, a well-known Santa Cruz Mountains winemaker
approached the family, wanting to lease a portion of their land for vineyards.
A keen wine collector, Bill was intrigued, and the seed for future vineyard
cultivation was planted. Almost twenty years after leaving his family farm
in Idaho, Bill returned to his farming roots and planted nine acres of pinot
noir on the southernmost tip of the rugged Santa Cruz Mountains terrain.
Byington Vineyard and Winery was established with its vintage 1987
release.
Tour begins promptly at Noon--please arrive by 11:45am to allow time
for traffic on Hwy 17 and parking. Guests must be at least 15 years old. The cost of $45 per person includes the tour, tasting, lunch and wine.
The Boxed Lunch includes an Artisan Sandwich, Fresh Fruit and Cookie.

VROOM, VROOM,
VRROOOOM--YOUR BOARD
IN ACTION
Highlights of the Board
Meeting July 21
By Gloria Loventhal
This year the Board’s goals are in the areas of:
Social Media: Increase and retain membership, including younger
members through the use of 21st century technology!
Leadership: Continue to expand and build on the leadership of the
Board and our members.
Partnerships: Create alliances with our neighboring car clubs and
dealerships. We divided into three groups to work on action plans to further our
goals. Through our recruitment efforts, we were able to appoint two
new Directors at Large--Geoff Paulsen and David Sears. Both bring
varied skills and add value to our Board, our goals and the club. Our First Sunday Drive and first partnering with another car club
was highly successful with 66 people attending! Many Porsche
club members also own Mercedes so there was lots to talk about.
Everyone enjoyed the wines and hospitality of Wente Brothers
Winery in Livermore, the end of our exciting drive. Thanks to Shawn
Merrill, our Director of FSD for making this a successful first!
Our next Board meeting is very important as we plan for the
upcoming year. The brainstorming/planning session is from 1:303:00 p.m. Please email ideas for next year’s programming to Don
Penney, Director of Activities at don.penney@kp.org.
All are welcome and encouraged to attend our Board meetings
held at Harry’s Hofbrau in Redwood City. NOTICE OF SFBA
QUARTERLY BOARD
MEETING AND ANNUAL
PLANNING MEETING
By Mauna Wagner
The next quarterly Board Meeting will be held on Sunday, October
27 from 3:30 to 6:00 p.m. at Harry’s Hofbrau, 1909 El Camino
Real, Redwood City. Immediately preceding the Board Meeting will
be the Annual Planning Meeting from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., where we
will develop the 2014 event calendar. All Board and Planning Meetings are open to SFBA Section members,
so please come and share your ideas. We welcome and depend on
member participation. An optional no-host dinner will follow. If you
plan to attend, please contact Secretary Mauna Wagner by October

OFF ROAD ON A MOUNTAIN, NOT FAR FROM HOME
by Geoff Paulsen
Most of us enjoy the fine road manners of our Mercedes Benz vehicles, but there is a group of Mercedes enthusiasts who like their
experiences in the dirt. And since most of the Mercedes ads and photos we see are of fast cars on pavement, much of the public does not
know that Mercedes can provide them with the most rugged and capable off-road vehicles in the world. In fact, I would venture to guess
that even most Mercedes Club members have never ridden in a Unimog.
Some of that changed on Saturday, August 3, 2013, when Peter Judy, a Board Member with the San Francisco Bay Area Section was
kind enough to invite 33 of us to his home in the Santa Cruz Mountains south of San Francisco to get a taste of some dirt, as well as some
fine food. Peter and Mary not only invited us to lunch, he and Mike Serpe (the leader of the G-Wagon Group and a highly-accomplished
off-road adventurer) had worked hard to design and build a 20-acre off-road track around Peter’s ridgetop home.
G-Wagen Group members regularly tackle and camp in the wilds of such places as New Mexico and Death Valley. So it was a real
privilege to be able to join them in an off-road adventure so close to home. I cannot think of another place in the San Francisco Bay Area
where one can (legally) take friends four wheeling through towering redwoods on ridge tops with stunning views.
The first half of Peter’s course was mostly downhill, challenging us with some curves and a couple of tight squeezes. Peter’s carefully
placed posts and ribbons guided our way back to his house for a lunch of barbequed chicken, bratwurst and a variety of salads. The food
was really good, but I found myself wondering if the tougher members of the G-Wagen crowd were perhaps thinking that the course was
not all that challenging.
But after lunch all that changed. Fourteen vehicles attempted the second part of the course. They
included an uninitiated-in-dirt ML350 Bluetec diesel, and a cadre of tough-looking (and in some
cases battered) G-Wagens. One of the G-Wagens was running on veggie oil and smelled like
something was being sautéed on the stove. Even a Land Rover snuck in, having taped a Mercedes
star onto its hood. But all were all dwarfed by a huge flatbed Unimog.
First, they mastered the ominous chip pile, which actually looked worse that it was and was easily
surmounted by the MLs. But then came the turn where you could get stuck between a rock and a
hard place. The rock was actually easy, if you could maneuver around it. But then came the hard
place--a hill so steep that even the Unimog struggled. With its four military wheels spinning in lockedtogether unison, its giant diesel thundering, its massive hulk shuddering, and clouds of dust rising,
the mighty machine came to a reluctant halt halfway up. After four attempts, it had to give up. But
the lighter and more agile vehicles hopped right up to the top. Interesting. Finally, a log obstacle
course offered a real challenge for the high-clearance vehicles.
In all, it was a day of friendship, fun, dust and sun. But I found myself staying up late that night,
thinking of far away off road adventures, and scanning the national ads for diesel G-Wagens…

THE AMAZING TESLA MODEL S
By Steve Robinson, Technical Director
THE DAY
On Saturday, August 10, our much anticipated Tesla Factory Tour Event became reality.
Anticipating the arrival of and checking in sixty members and guests, I asked Jerry Rood to meet me there around 8:45 AM. We were not the
first ones there. The excitement was building. This did not detract the Tesla Staff from setting up our meeting room, staging the five Model S
Performance Sedans for our coveted test drive to follow, and meeting and greeting us. Our schedule was set and began promptly at 10:00 AM
with sign-up for the test drive followed by a concise overview of the company, the development of the Roadster and Model S and what we would
experience during the tour and test drive. We were then divided into two groups for the tour and test drive after being assured that no one would
miss either. Then the fun began…
THE TOUR
Load the tram with thirty of us. Yes, we got to ride through the 20% utilized five million square feet of the former NUMMI factory (lots of growth
potential), stopping at key locations in the manufacturing and assembly of this amazing all electric auto. What did we see: huge rolls of aluminum
for body panels and structural components, body panel stamping area where the welding, riveting and bonding of body panels and structural
components took place, assembly, priming, painting; incorporating customer-specified options; and much more.
Just mentioning two things that truly were impressive: (1) Body panels are stamped out of the same aluminum sheet and follow the Model S
through the entire manufacturing process ensuring its outstanding fit and finish, and (2) Seat assembly, although sourced to an outside company,
is done entirely in house guaranteeing quality control.
Although the lithium-ion battery cells are provided by Panasonic, the battery packs are assembled in house as are the drive trains.
And, not to forget, each Model S goes through additional in-factory testing which I loosely describe as the “bump and grind” to do a final check
on suspension and structural integrity.
THE TEST DRIVE
Even though everything we have seen first hand and even read about is spectacular auto, there is nothing like the experience of driving the Model
S. Slide very easily into this Sedan and first observe the elegant simplicity: The seating, the door panels, the dash and huge central command
center, and need I mention fit and finish?!
Place your foot on the brake pedal to start, hold onto the steering wheel, shift into drive (all components sourced from Mercedes-Benz) and go.
We all got to test drive on the frontage road adjacent to the factory through several curves and a pretty darn good straight-away. If you did not
take the opportunity to accelerate this fantastic car to close to 100 MPH in a matter of seconds, you will never know what you missed. I and others
I talked with afterwards did not miss this opportunity (no names to be mentioned).
THE TESLA STAFF
I have sent a special thanks to the Tesla staff who pulled this event together and you need to know who they are: Ted Merendino, Kristen
Finkelstein, David Waxman; Co-pilots Mitchell Baker, Josh Farinha, AJ Vandermeyden, Sybille Rizzolli, and, last but not least our tour guide and
driver, Shaun Phillips. Their outstanding coordination ensured that this event started and concluded exactly on schedule.
AND MORE
On Tuesday, August 20, more press for Tesla Model S: Top crash-ratings scoring from the NHTSA of five stars.
This is quite an automobile!!

First Sunday Drives
FIRST SUNDAY DRIVE
First Sunday Drives are casual driving events that are held
on the first Sunday of every month. To be notified of the next
First Sunday Drive and for more information to links and
event photos, please find us on Facebook www.facebook.com/
FirstSundayDrives, or go to www.FirstSundayDrives.com,
or send an email to join@FirstSundayDrives.com to join the
distribution email list. Questions? Contact FSD administrator
Shawn Merrill at her2011@firstsundaydrives.com.
The morning began as a cool (let’s not kid ourselves--it was COLD)
foggy summer morning. Now if this drive had originated in the City of
San Francisco, this would have been par for August, but this was Los
Altos! Fortunately, by the time we were ready to depart and hit the road,
the fog gave way to a very enjoyable day for the 23 Mercedes-Benz cars
and their owners.
By Shawn Merrill
The drive took us through quaint downtown Los Gatos and through
Monte Serrano as we drove along Highway 9, heading towards the
Santa Cruz County Line. At 1.7 miles past the county line, the game plan was to stop at this wonderful lookout. WRONG!
You see, several Boy Scout troops decided to use this rather small public-use parking lot as their own personal staging area for a hike to who knows
where, and told us to move along. Boy Scouts were scattered everywhere--which would not allow one non-Mercedes-Benz car to park, much less
23 Mercedes Benz autos, even if only to use the restroom. (Plan A).
Thank goodness for Plan B! We headed down the road to the town of Ben Lomond while on our way to our final destination in Bonney Doon at
the Beauregard Winery for wine tasting and a picnic lunch. We stopped at the Ben Lomond Market for those who wanted to purchase their picnic
supplies/goodies and those who needed to make use the store’s other amenities.
Then we hit the road again for another 30-minute drive to Beauregard. For five generations, the Beauregard family has been working the land in
Bonny Doon, growing premium wine grapes. They offer a great outdoor setting for us to sit outside and enjoy our glass(es) of wine and picnic meals.
They were very accommodating for the 40 club members--I would recommend coming here yourself when you have the chance.
As for September’s drive, mark your calendar for September 1 (yes, that‘s Labor Day weekend) as members Derick Trekking and Andy Chan
have planned a route that will take us from Burlingame to the USS San Francisco Memorial, then back down the coast, through the Devil Slide
tunnels (just in case you missed them in June), then onto Moss Beach Distillery for a no-host lunch.
As for October’s drive, the BMW group will be joining us for wine tasting
at the Kendall-Jackson Winery in Fulton, CA (just north of Santa Rosa)
where we will be given a private tour of the grounds and have a picnic
lunch. (There is also a Plan B just in case the weather is not favorable
for an outdoor picnic--so don’t let Mother Nature fool you if the weather
is less than perfect that morning).
On a side note, your help is needed. I cannot continue to do these
drives without member support. Earlier this year, Roger and Carol
Bloom volunteered to lead a drive. Derick Trekking and Andy Chan
volunteered to lead September’s drive. Ron and Kathy Franke
(November’s drive) and Mark Lehold and Sally Hinds (December’s
drive) have stepped up and are planning and leading First Sunday
Drives.
As for 2014, Bill Young (February) and Lenard and Kristen Brenner
(April) are planning those First Sunday Drives. The other 10 months
in 2014 are “open” for leaders. Please contact me at her2011@
firstsundaydrives.com and we can talk about what great fun it is to lead
a drive!
Until then drive safe.

ENJOY AUTUMN AT
SIERRA NEVADA RALLY
POST-LEGENDS MONTEREY
YACHT CLUB DINNER
The turning fall foliage of the Sierras should provide a
stunning backdrop of color along the scenic back roads
route of the Sierra Nevada Rally over the second weekend
in October—October 11-13. This Western Regional event,
hosted by the San Francisco Bay Area Section, is open to
all MBCA members and should draw Mercedes enthusiasts
from Northern and Central California and Northern Nevada.
The Monterey Peninsula Yacht Club was the perfect venue
for cocktails and dinner after Legends of the Autobahn. Though
the traffic didn’t cooperate–Hwy 1 northbound was closed–
determined road warriors were able to make their way to the
wharf. The Club was very hospitable to our delayed and harried
participants, helping to sooth frayed nerves.
by Eva Schlosser
The weekend includes a Friday night Welcome Reception and a
great fun Rally followed by a western-themed Awards Banquet
on Saturday. Sunday is yours to explore the Carson Valley
area on your own or head back toward your home destination.
The Saturday rally is not complicated and technical. Think part
poker run, part treasure hunt, part trivia quiz, and part crossword
puzzle. Add a great awards banquet with wonderful prizes, and
you’ve got the idea!
Our host hotel is one of Nevada’s finest historical properties.
The 1862 David Walley’s Hot Springs Resort is celebrating its
150th anniversary of offering healing natural hot springs and spa
services to travelers including the riders of the Pony Express. After
your arrival, you might need to “take the waters” in one of seven
natural hot springs or two pools—and massage and other full spa
services are available with appointment. For photos and more
resort information, visit their website. We have negotiated 10%
off the regular guest rates at this premium resort--$116 nightly for
a hotel-style room and $170 nightly for an apartment-style onebedroom suite that sleeps 4.

The weather was just right for drinks and appetizers on the deck,
watching tourists and boaters enjoying the day. Entrée choices
were New York Striploin and Salmon (AKA Field and Stream),
and both were delicious. We were joined by several dignitaries:
Lisa Juhl, MBCA Director of Marketing in Colorado, our own
Gary Anderson, Editor of the Star Magazine, and Tony Otis,
President of the Sacramento Section--to name a few. Other
guests came from southern California, Seattle, and even Ohio.
Our sincere thanks go to SFBA members Sydney Reed and
Doug Storkovich for inviting us to enjoy their unique and special
club once again after the Legends event.
Cost for the event is $100 per person and includes Welcome
Reception appetizers, a box lunch for the Saturday Rally and the
Awards Banquet dinner. Registration deadline is September 21,
but seating is limited at our very special award banquet venue: Be
sure to: make your reservations early!
This is a great getaway weekend and a great way to meet and

PALO ALTO AIRPORT DAY
WINE BOTTLING EVENT
The Palo Alto Airport Day sponsors have invited our Club
to show off our cars on Sunday, September 29, 2013, 10am4pm. This is a wonderful yearly event with:
What: Wine Bottling
When: Saturday, November 23, 2013, 10AM – Noon
Where: Guglielmo Winery, 1480 East Main St, Morgan Hill
Cost: $10 (plus optional wine purchase(s) of $6 per bottle
at the event)
Just in time for the holidays, here’s an opportunity to bottle (and
taste!) some great wine, with a custom Mercedes Club label. You’ll
be able get up close and personal with the wine–-operating the
filling machine, as well as the corking and labeling equipment. No,
you won’t be ready to go professional, but you’ll have great fun
learning something new. We held this event a few years ago and
received rave reviews for both the Guglielmo wine and the overall
experience. The Guglielmo Winery is family owned and produces nearly 40,000
cases annually, from their vineyards in Santa Clara Valley and other
premium winegrowing regions in California. The family oversees
every phase of the winemaking process and their goal is to produce
natural, quality wines to share with family and friends.
The price of the event includes the bottling experience, wine tasting
and snacks. The wine we bottle will be available for purchase at $6
per bottle. Please bring cash or check to purchase the wine. For
