The variety and range of expression which great musicians have found for the emotions of love is wonderful, and it is perhaps not too much to say that it has been the theme of the finest existing musical masterpieces. The melodies of Gounod's " Faust" are full of the passion of youth. The music of Saint-Saens, " Samson et Dalila" vibrates with sensuous longing. Puccini has exquisitely expressed the loves of Bohemia, while Verdi's " Aida" To quote even and " Otello " contain love-music of undying beauty. " Louise," Debussy's " Pelleas et more modern music, in Charpentier's 11lelisande" and Strauss' " Rosenkavalier" one finds some rarely beautiful love-themes.
