CELEBRATING 175 YEARS - CHEYNEY UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA
The Cheyney University National Alumni Association is proud to present the 175th Gala at the Pennsylvania
Convention Center on Thursday, October 18, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. Proceeds from the event will benefit scholarships
for Cheyney University students. The Gala event is the signature event of Cheyney’s 175th year as a national
treasure, featuring a VIP reception, dinner, entertainment and an After Party with dancing.

CHEYNEY UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA
Cheyney University was established on February 25, 1837, through the bequest of Richard Humphreys, making it the
oldest institution of higher learning for African Americans. At its founding in 1837, the university was named the
African Institute. The school began in Philadelphia as the Institute for Colored Youth and successfully provided free
classical education for qualified young people. In 1902, the Institute moved to George Cheyney's farm, 25 miles
west of Philadelphia. In 1913, the name was changed to Cheyney State Teachers College; in 1921, the State Normal
School at Cheyney; and in 1959, Cheyney State College. In 1983, Cheyney joined the State System of Higher
Education as Cheyney University of Pennsylvania.
Today, Cheyney University students represent a variety of races, cultures, and nationalities that receive education
instruction beyond the vision of Richard Humphreys. Cheyney graduates still become teachers, but students also
enter careers such as journalism, medicine, business, science, law, communication, and government service. The
university offers baccalaureate degrees in more than 30 disciplines and the Master’s degree in Education.

Fanny M. Coppin Jackson was the 3rd Principal of the Institute
(1896-1902) and the first African American woman to become a school
principal. The Laboratory School on campus was named in her honor.

Octavius V. Catto was the class valedictorian in 1858 and became
Principal in 1869. He was a civil rights activist and was influential in
getting the 15th amendment passed which granted the right to vote to
Black men.

Leslie Pinckney Hill was an educator, author, poet, dramatist and
community leader. He authored the school’s alma mater and was
President from 1913 – 1951. The library is named in his honor.

Dr. James Duckrey, 2nd President (1951-1965), came from a family of
educators and was a principal in the Philadelphia public school system.
The Duckrey Social Science Center is named in his honor.

Dr. Wade Wilson a graduate of the class of 1936, former athlete, and
former professor was president of the college from 1968 - 1981. The

THE CHEYNEY UNIVERSITY NATIONAL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
The Cheyney Alumni Association met for the first time on commencement day in May 1862. The meeting
was held in Sansom Hall in Philadelphia where graduation exercises were scheduled. The association
proved to be very active during its early years taking on projects of significant and economic importance.
Being acutely aware that education was perhaps the best means at the time to help eradicate prejudice
against their race, the members set up a project that involved determining the number, location and
condition of all black schools in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Delaware and Ohio. Their purpose
was to supply black teachers to schools that needed them. Thus, the first organized attempt at placing
graduates was through the efforts of the alumni association.
Over the years, the alumni association has grown and taken on broader responsibilities. In 1970, the
association was incorporated and a non-profit organization known as the Cheyney State College General
Alumni Association was formed to promote the advancement of education by sponsoring, supporting,
encouraging, aiding and conducting educational activities of all kinds through scholarship aid to
individuals…the grant of funds for the support of research and study: the development of facilities,
physical plant, program and administration: purchasing capital equipment, books, libraries, laboratories or
other facilities for the purchase, lease, construction or provision of the same in any manner whatsoever.
There are 2 general alumni meetings held each year, one during Alumni Weekend and the other during
Homecoming Weekend. Currently, there are eleven active chartered chapters and two strong affiliate
groups: The Men of BACA and the Cheyney “C” Club. The chapters and affiliates are unique in their
leadership and organizational dynamics with some overlapping memberships between the affiliates and
local and/or national chapter membership.
