Traveling With Western:
Reflecting on 43 years of rafting
makes us think how much has changed, and how much hasn’t. Our first
rafts were nothing more than surplus military pontoons strapped together,
and canned chili was the gustatory highlight of the evening meal. Things
have changed in 43 years! Enormous improvements in boats, training and
equipment mean lighter loads, more flexibility, enhanced comfort and safety.
Now we plunge through rapids on state-of-the-art rafts, dine on fresh salads, shrimp cocktails and Dutch oven feasts, and have more time to explore
the ancient secrets of the canyons.

Grand Canyon:
But some important things haven’t changed in four decades of rafting: The
indescribable, astonishing beauty of America’s rugged West still takes our
breath away, the water’s unbridled power amazes us, and the guides’ yelling
“whitewater” still pumps the adrenaline. These emotions are as strong today
as they were when pioneer river runner Jack Currey launched our first raft
in 1961. Find out for yourself and you’ll never be the same.

THE BEST
RAFTING
VACATIONS IN THE WEST!
T A K E A J O U R N E Y with Western River Expeditions and you’ll experience
the difference. We have a singular goal: To provide each guest with the best
adventure vacation possible. Personal attention to passenger comfort and
safety, combined with first-class gear and exceptional river guides, has made
Western the nation’s first choice for a rafting vacation.
THE BEST LEADERS & GUIDES
WHAT OUR GUESTS HAVE TO SAY
Many things set Western apart. First and foremost are
our guides. Since most of our guides return year after
year, we choose only a handful of the very best from
hundreds of applicants. Then, through one of the most
rigorous training programs in the industry, each of our
guides receives hundreds of hours of training in river
safety, culinary arts, and natural history interpretation
— assuring you the highest possible levels of both service and security. Repeatedly, our guests tell us their
guides were the best part of their trip.
“This was an incredible trip for our family. We have not stopped talking
about how much fun we had and how great the people were that we
met. As great as everything was, truly the guides were the key to making
this trip so fantastic. They were all absolutely amazing. They were not
only expert rafters, but great cooks, funny, outgoing, and kind. We all
miss them. We have so many wonderful memories. This trip was a true
gift. We will treasure it for the rest of our lives. Thank you for a family
vacation of a lifetime.”
JEAN CORTES, Connecticut: Cataract Canyon
“I did a trip last year with another company and only wish I could
have found Western a year ago. You are truly a class act. The equipment was fantastic (cots, folding chairs and new clip tents), food was
great, and the guides for sure made the trip. I would not hesitate to
recommend Western to anyone and everyone.”
JACK WHITE, Woodland Hills, California: Cataract Canyon

IF YOU’VE NEVER RUN a river or slept outdoors, you are like many of our guests.
Relax. We design our trips to be comfortable and accessible to almost everyone,
regardless of experience. After all, this is your vacation. Your preparation
couldn’t be easier when you travel with Western. Whatever your trip choice,
you’ll find every expedition is packed with the same first-class amenities.
DINING…WESTERN STYLE
Rafting creates big appetites and Western knows just
how to satisfy them. At sun-up, you might think you’re
still dreaming when you see plates of steaming flapjacks, fresh fruit and scrambled eggs, but it’s the way
every morning on the river begins. Lunch will likely
include meats and cheeses, delicious breads, along with
crisp vegetables and a variety of spreads. Tasty chicken
and veggie wraps or perhaps chicken salad pitas may
also be part of Western’s mid-day buffet. Every night is
different, but the dinner menu will likely include grilled
chicken breasts, tender steaks, pasta, or fresh fish.
“This trip was truly life changing for me. I know, it sounds trite, but it
was. I had never camped, and frankly, was not what I would consider an
adventure traveler. This trip was wonderful. Our guides were terrific.
They knew their business, did it well (both on and off the river), and
made me feel comfortable and safe. The sky was better than anything you
could get in a hotel room!”

COMMENTS
FROM OUR
GUESTS
~ TRAVELING WITH WESTERN: AN ADVENTURE OF A LIFETIME ~
TOM NEWCOMB - Rancho Santa Margarita, California: Green River
There truly are no words to convey what a soul experiences on
this expedition! I have backpacked over some of the most beautiful pieces of Europe and this trip down the Colorado has to be
at the TOP of my wonderful list of life experiences! The guides
provided historical, ecological, geological, and anecdotal information that enhanced the thrill of facing HUGE walls of water
along our trek through the Canyon. Even now, some years later,
my mind paints vivid pictures of sights, scenes, poignant
moments that keep the memory of this trip very alive today.
My husband and I have spread the word about Western River
Expeditions, who probably ranks as #1 for providing thrill, fun,
and even class in such an amazing rugged piece of our amazing country. Kudos to you Western River!!! I’m hoping I can join
you again.
Seven members of my family and I rafted the Green River and
we all had a fantastic time. I think it was more fun than any of
us had expected. The scenery, water, hikes, food, and company
were all terrific! All this wrapped up together by our super
guides, Wendy, Kenna, Sara, and Sara. Their professionalism,
personable nature, good humor, and very, very hard work
added immeasurably to the trip. Next year we will be back with
Western for more adventurous trips.
JOHN MOORE - Chino Hills, California: Green River
Right from the start when the Cessna airplane landed on the
dirt road atop a beautiful butte, I knew this was going to be the
best trip of my life. The people were excellent, the food was
perfect, and the rapids were great. This has been the best trip
of my life, and I hope to have many more river trips.
LINDA JENNINGS - Florida: Grand Canyon 6 Day
Once was not enough, perhaps 1000 would not be too many.
This trip was a life changing experience. The chill of the clear
green water, the stark beauty of the canyon, the countless stars
in the inky black sky, realizing that you are traveling through
more than a billion years in time all serve to imprint an everlasting memory. The knowledge, skill and competency of the river
guides, the delicious food, the obvious caring they demonstrate
for preservation of the canyon really impressed me. Still today,
when life gets too hectic I go back to the river in my mind and
memory and feel the peace, beauty and awe envelope me. Oh, I
almost forgot, the rapids weren’t too bad either. WOW!
LANIE SORKIN - Beverly Hills, California: Westwater Canyon
From the moment I first met your team, I was greeted with a smile,
taken care of with great attention to detail, given thorough
explanations about procedure and safety, and then told fascinating tales about the river and its magical history. Their generosity and good spirit made all of us feel that we’d made real
friends with whom we could be ourselves - in comfort and ease.
The trip was filled with laughter, singing, fabulous food, fun
games and first-class service from beginning to end. These are
memories that are truly priceless and will never be forgotten.
DON WHITEBREAD - Mountain View, California:
TED HUBBARD - Winston-Salem, North Carolina: Grand Canyon 3 Day
Westwater Canyon
Fantastic! It was an incredible adventure. It was great for my
whole family. It is difficult to find trips we all like since I have 10
and 19 year old daughters. My wife, daughters, and I all loved it.
The Grand Canyon and the Colorado River rapids were beyond
description. Western River Expeditions is top notch. Our
guides, Craig and Mike, were both professional and entertaining. They were just great! It was an experience we will never
forget. Thanks for the adventure of a lifetime.
My son and I were just reminiscing about the great Westwater
trip we did early last June, so I thought I’d send you a quick
note just to compliment you again on the quality of the trip.
The river was low, so the rapids were not as thrilling as we were
expecting, but the guides did such a fine job of making the trip
about more than just rapids, that by the end of the trip we didn’t
care. Greg, Jon and Wes, were tireless, fine cooks, always in
good humor, and wonderful ambassadors for Utah. My son,
Travis, was especially taken with Greg’s campfire guitar playing.
ANN RAPICE - Wolcott, Connecticut: Grand Canyon 4 Day
IAIN ROSS - Inverness, Scotland:
My family and I just returned from this trip. It was life changing.
This was the best family vacation we have ever had. My son who
is 16 loved it as much as we did. It was perfect from start to finish. From our first contact with Western River for reservations
to arriving home, it was fantastic. We opted for the extra day at
Bar 10 ranch and were not disappointed. The folks at Bar 10 are
the nicest, friendliest and openhearted people we have met in a
long time. Coming from the east, it was a real eye opener.
There was a very personal feel to the whole trip, the river
guides did everything they could to make the whole trip an
experience of a lifetime. The fun didn’t stop when the rafting
finished for the day, many an hour was spent singing as the
sun set down below the canyon walls - Can’t wait to go back!
KLINT HUTTON - Litchfield Park, AZ: Cataract Canyon
Sleeping out under the stars where God did some of his finest
work is something that is hard to put in words. It does really put
things in the right perspective. It lets you know that everything
is going to be all right, don’t worry about everything so much.
As long as there are places like this where you can go and enjoy,
take in the beauty, have fun, and be with new friends and family,
life is great. Thanks for everything and see you next summer.

ELIZABETH CLARK - Sautee, Georgia: Grand Canyon 6 Day
Cataract Canyon
MARY SPEIRS - Salt Lake City, Utah: Cataract Canyon
As a local I am often asked why I don’t go on vacations in California or Nevada. One look at the pictures from our river trips
(this is my third trip with Western River) and what does Disneyland or Las Vegas have to compare? Disneyland has no ride to
match thrills you get when you hit white water. As for the glitter of Las Vegas, the Milky Way far out shines anything Las
Vegas has to offer. The food is great and you just can’t beat the
ambiance — Dinner served at sunset with red rock in the background is quite breathtaking. Will I do another river trip? The
answer is yes I will.

Quality Family Time…Together
A rafting vacation with Western River Expeditions has all the ingredients for an outstanding family experience: water, adventure, fun,
learning, and for the younger kids, the chance to stay dirty. Parents
are guaranteed some quality time with the kids – away from phones,
computers and TV – plus quality time together as Western’s designated fun director entertains the kids with games and activities.
Something for Everyone
Because Western’s designated family trips typically include an oar
boat, paddle boat and inflatable kayaks, kids and parents can all share
the experience and each gets exactly what they want out of it, whether
they choose to tame the rapids on their own in a small boat or simply
hold on in a big boat.
With more challenging hikes and stronger
rapids, these trips are excellent for families
with older kids.
Find the perfect vacation for your family at westernriver.com/trips/family
Although every one of Western’s rafting
vacations and River Ranch Adventures
would create an unforgettable family
experience, some are more suitable than
others depending on your situation. To
help you decide, we have highlighted a
few of our most popular trips for families.
MEMORIES…
“What a wonderful family adventure! Our
15 year old son, who craves adventure, and
our 14 year old daughter, who was a little
timid about the thought of whitewater
rafting, both loved it. I loved that I didn’t
have to do a lick of work on the whole trip,
thanks to the superb planning of Western
River, and our great guides!”
NANCY MORGAN - LENOIR, NORTH CAROLINA
Green River Trip
“This is our fourth Green River trip. My
kids (and their friends!) enjoy this trip so
much, we just keep coming back--even
though we did take a year out to do Grand
Canyon. The Green simply has so many
superlatives: great sandy beaches, good
hikes, warm water, super guides, and wonderful dutch-oven meals. The kids (and I)
really like the paddle rafts and rubber
kayaks, although it’s nice to kick back in
one of the boats rowed by guides as well.
This is the greatest family vacation ever,
and even though the “kids” are no longer
teens, we’ll be back!”

5 DAY TRIP
Desolation Canyon, deeper than Grand Canyon, is hardly desolate with its big sandy beaches, sparkling side streams, shady
stands of huge Cottonwoods, and abundant wildlife. A century
ago, this picture-perfect playground was a hiding place for
Butch Cassidy and his gang of bank robbers. Now, with familyfriendly vacation rates, we’ve made it easy for adventurous
families to escape here and play. Ride some 60 fun-filled rapids
in a rowboat with our guide doing all the work, or take a turn
challenging the waves in an inflatable kayak or paddleboat.
Hike to old homesteads and hideouts. Play beach volleyball, or
do nothing at all while Western’s designated “Fun Director”
entertains the kids. Jack Creek

The awesome beauty of Grand Canyon continues in the lower
100 miles of the canyon, but the Colorado River’s famous rapids,
though still exciting, are a bit tamer and less challenging. Massive sandstone cliffs conjure up imaginary shapes. Hidden waterfalls and pools carve their way down to the river. Wildlife is abundant, with frequent sightings of elusive Blue Heron, soaring
hawks and eagles, and majestic Big Horn sheep. At night, the
canyon walls unveil a heaven of innumerable stars. One of the
great features of this 3-day trip is its ease of access from Las
Vegas. Many guests choose to precede this trip with an optional
day’s activities and overnight stay at Bar Ten Ranch on the rim
of the Grand Canyon. 26

WESTERN’S
RAFT FLEET
JUST THE THOUGHT OF RAPIDS makes a first-timer tense and a seasoned rafter
salivate. But rapids should be respected, not feared. Our rafts are designed to ride the
rapids with a measure of safety and Western’s guides are trained to skillfully steer you
through the excitement. Secure handholds, life jackets, and plenty of advance preparation ensure a fun experience. If you’re a thrill seeker, sit up front where the waves hit
hardest, or ride aft for more protection. Either way, plan on having the time of your life.
The rapids on each trip vary, depending on the time of
year and speed of the water. Western matches its rafts
to the flow of the river to provide the best experience.
For example, a moderate late-season rapid taken in a
small inflatable kayak can be just as thrilling as a monster rapid navigated in a J-rig.
EXPERIENCE THE FUN & EXHILARATION OF A ROWBOAT »
On the Green River, Westwater, Salmon River, & Cataract
(later in the summer), guides adeptly
maneuver three to six-passenger rowboats. These specially designed 18-foot
rafts are “self-bailing” which means
that you’ll never touch a bail bucket,
except for an impromptu water fight!
PADDLE YOUR OWN INFLATABLE KAYAK »
When water levels are suitable, two-person inflatable
kayaks let you challenge the rapids on your own during
Green River, Westwater, Salmon, and Cataract trips.
When you’re ready to kick back and relax, simply return
to your rowboat, stretch out
in the sun, and let your guide
do the work.
RIDE BIG WHITEWATER ON WESTERN’S J-RIG »
Bigger rapids demand bigger rafts such as Western’s
patented J-Rig. Where the Colorado River carves
through Cataract Canyon earlier in the summer and on
our Grand Canyon 3, 4, and 6-day trips, J-Rigs are the
vessel of choice for maximum
excitement and safety. Environmentally friendly, quiet 4-stroke
motors power these rugged rafts
specially built for Western.
GUESTS RAVE ABOUT OUR RAFTS »
“Your J-Rig and all of the equipment you supplied were top
quality. The design of your J-Rig provided both maximum
comfort for the less adventuresome and exhilarating thrills
for the white water fans.”
STUART, MEG, & ERIC YOAK — University City, MO

General Information
& Reservations
RESERVING YOUR TRIP
HOW TO RESERVE YOUR SPACE » Reserve your vacation two ways:
(1) Call 800-453-7450 or 801-942-6669 Monday through Friday 9am –
5pm Mountain time. Western’s reservation staff is happy to answer specific
questions about all rafting vacations and trip options. (2) Reserve your
trip online at www.westernriver.com — There you will also find specific
answers to many of your questions. Space is limited on all rafting trips, so
make reservations early.
TRIP DEPOSITS » An initial deposit of $300 per person is required for
all trips to secure your space. Deposits may be made by check or credit
card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express).
PAYING YOUR BALANCE » The balance of your trip cost is due 60 days
prior to departure and may be paid by check (preferably), money order in
US dollars, or by credit card. If final payment is not received when due,
Western River Expeditions reserves the right to cancel the reservation.
PREPARING FOR YOUR TRIP
CONFIRMATION PACKET » After you make a reservation, you will
receive a confirmation packet that includes a list of commonly asked
questions and answers, a checklist of what to bring, cancellation insurance information and order form, and detailed information about arrival
and departure. The release and information forms enclosed in your packet should be signed and returned as soon as possible by mail or fax.
CLOTHING AND GEAR » Your confirmation packet will have a detailed
list of what to bring plus a catalog containing our recommended items.
Quick-drying shorts, swimming suits, and tee shirts are the basics and you
should prepare for all types of weather. Since storms can appear and disappear in no time, a rain suit is essential on the river – even in summer.
The rainsuit also protects you from the splashing waves on cool mornings
and earlier season trips. To find a complete list of what to bring, or to shop
online, please visit www.westernriver.com.
GRATUITIES » Your guides will make every effort to see that the trip is
enjoyable and successful. Gratuities for guides are greatly appreciated
and at your discretion, as a gesture of thanks for their professionalism
and service. A suggested guideline is 10 percent of the trip cost. The common practice is to give the gratuity to the trip leader on the last night. It
will later be divided equally with the rest of the crew.
CANCELLATION AND REFUND POLICIES » If you must cancel any
reservation, the cancellation fee will follow the formula in the adjacent
box. Our cancellation policy applies in every instance and there will be no
exceptions for any reason. Western will not issue any refund for arriving
late or leaving a trip early. Western River Expeditions is not responsible
for any expenses incurred in preparation for any cancelled trips or for
costs incurred due to travel delays, flight cancellations, or illness. If you
are concerned about the possibility of having to cancel, we strongly recommend you purchase trip cancellation insurance. Cancellation insurance
information will be enclosed in your trip confirmation packet and is available online at westernriver.com. This policy provides reimbursement in
accordance with stated coverage of any non-refundable portion of your
trip deposit or trip cost in the event you must cancel your trip. The cancellation policy applies at the time of deposit.
