COMMUNITY REPORT 2009 - 2010 HUMBER RIVER REGIONAL HOSPITAL umber River Regional Hospital is one of Canada's largest regional acute care hospitals, serving a catchment area of more than 850,000 people in the northwest Greater Toronto Area. Humber River is home to a compassionate staff and physician team focused on continual improvement in the quality of care they provide. Our hospital is dedicated to achieving its vision of being the hospital of choice…committed to patient and family needs. Humber River Regional Hospital’s redevelopment plan will see it commence construction of Ontario’s first digital hospital in 2011; one Humber River plans to make a lean, green, technological showcase. This new acute care facility will replace the current three outdated, overcrowded buildings, with our Finch site being renewed as an ambulatory and urgent care centre. The new hospital will be centrally located at Highway 401 and Keele St in Toronto. The major planning and design work has been completed, and the Request for Proposals to design, build, finance and maintain our new home will be issued this fall. Humber River Regional Hospital provides a complete range of acute care hospital services, a number of which are considered provincial leaders. HOK, one of the world's leading healthcare design teams, has been retained to provide the design compliance services for the new hospital project. Humber River is home to Canada's first nocturnal home hemodialysis program, and experts from around the world come every year to learn from its achievements. Our mental health program is led by Dr. George Awad, a University of Toronto medical school Professor Emeritus, who lectures around the world. The Ontario government selected Humber River’s laparoscopic bariatric surgical program as the first Centre of Excellence so designated in the province. Humber boasts of other excellent programs. We are formally affiliated with the University of Toronto, and have professional partnerships with other prestigious medical schools, including Queen’s and McMaster Universities. Design the finest new acute care hospital Ontario has ever seen. Everything we did as an organization last year targeted one of these two fundamental objectives. The first has always been my primary focus as President & CEO of Humber River Regional Hospital. The needs of our patients and their families are our first priority. When we do well, we celebrate our success, and then strive to improve. During their Accreditation survey in November, our Laboratory Services team scored over 90% for compliance with more than 500 national standards. Even given these impressive results, they immediately set up action plans to drive further quality improvements. In turn our physician and staff experts share their knowledge with local agencies, other hospitals and medical students from around the world. You’ll read about some of them in this Report, and other highlights of the past year: generous donations from the Hull and 4 HUMBER RIVER REGIONAL HOSPITAL DiCapo families; our new paediatric asthma clinic; going green at Humber. The second - our new hospital - is creating tremendous excitement within our hospital and our community. In my 2006 Annual Report message, shortly after our redevelopment plans were approved by the provincial government, these words framed the work that lay ahead for Humber River: “The challenge before us is to take maximum advantage of this tremendous opportunity and build the best possible facility and system for our community.” In this Report you will see concept renderings of the new Humber River Regional Hospital. Your new hospital will be a patient and family-friendly building. It will change how environmental design considerations are incorporated in future hospital construction. It will be a model of efficiency in design. I had every confidence that our team would deliver. They exceeded my highest expectations, and I am incredibly proud of what we have done together. Rueben Devlin President & CEO The success of any hospital correlates directly to the talent of its Board of Directors and the insight of its Chair. Your Board has amazing talent, and they have used it generously in your service. The leadership of our retiring Board Chair, Norm Naumoff, has been inspiring. He has taken us through some of the most exciting and challenging times in our history. We are a better community and a better hospital because of his commitment to Humber River. Our redevelopment project is in the process of selecting the company that will build our new facility. As we move towards opening day, we continue our efforts to be the best hospital we can be. COMMUNITY REPORT 2009 - 2010 Artist’s Concept mpressive results come from impressive leadership. Our community received both from its hospital last year. Thanks to some extraordinary work by Humber River Regional Hospital’s team, your hospital continued to grow in influence within Ontario’s health care system last year. Under the strategic guidance of your Board of Directors, some notable achievements were made by Humber River. I congratulate our entire team for all their accomplishments in the pursuit of excellence last year. Our new hospital is the most impactful example of this. Remarkable advances have been made under the leadership of our Chief Operating Officer, Barb Collins, and our Board Building Committee. Together with our planning team and community partners, they are bringing to life a modern new hospital. While doing it, they are pioneering new ways of thinking that will change future hospital design in Canada. I congratulate them all for their efforts on your behalf. We worked with our partners on the HRRH Foundation Board to further align organizational goals COMMUNITY REPORT 2009 - 2010 and synergies. This work is of critical importance in preparing for the upcoming launch of the Foundation’s capital campaign to support our new hospital’s construction. Your Board of Directors undertook a review of its governance competencies last year. Fostering core expertise at the Board level is vital in the increasingly complex world of hospitals, and we will continue that work through future Board education initiatives. Quality of care is always closely scrutinized by your Board. Humber River participates in a wide range of initiatives designed to drive further improvement. One of the more rigorous is the Accreditation Canada survey, which we will undergo again this fall. Humber River has done very well in past surveys, and our Accreditation teams are hard at work preparing for this examination. We will be stringently tested in many areas, notably on Required Organizational Practices (ROPs). The ROPs are national standards of quality and safety that go to Norman Naumoff Board Chair the heart of hospital care. Our results will be publicly released when made available to us by Accreditation Canada - likely early 2011 - so our community can see for themselves how we did. The 2010 AGM marks the end of my three year term as Board Chair. I am grateful to my Board colleagues for their confidence and advice over that period. Our President & CEO Dr. Rueben Devlin has been steadfast and strategic in his guidance of our hospital during my time as Chair. I have worked with so many great people here at Humber, and their energy, dedication and expertise never failed to impress. I thank each of you for the privilege you bestowed on me. I look forward to the ground breaking next year. HUMBER RIVER REGIONAL HOSPITAL 5 ow many times have we heard a doctor ask a child: say aaahhh? Often for minor complaints like a sore throat. But for some children, saying aaahhh helps a physician judge how well they are coping with a life-altering medical problem: asthma. For Tanisha Deakaran, (above with paediatric pulmonologist 6 HUMBER RIVER REGIONAL HOSPITAL Dr. Tania Samanta), saying aaahhh is easier these days. Tanisha has paediatric asthma, and thanks to our new Paediatric Asthma Clinic, opened in January, she is now getting expert treatment at Humber River. Supported by the Asthma Society of Ontario, we’re bringing care closer to home for Tanisha and other children facing the challenge of asthma. Humber River continually analyzes the demographic data of our catchment area, looking for trends to help us design our program and service model more effectively. When that analysis showed paediatric asthma as a growing problem, we opened this great new clinic. COMMUNITY REPORT 2009 - 2010 PAINTING HONOURS DR. BERGER Dr. Sam Berger delivers the best medicine - just ask Harriette Caplan. “Dr. Berger is kind, caring, soft-spoken and brilliant. My mother had a rare blood disorder and I had a million medical questions - I even remember calling Dr. Berger at home on a Saturday night. His commitment to his patients and their families is second to none.” Last January Harriette expressed her gratitude for Dr. Berger by unveiled a painting in the Church site Chemotherapy Clinic. “I wanted to contribute something in my parents’ memory, but that also had something to do with Dr. Berger and his wonderful care for both of them. “ HELPING COMBAT STIGMA Dr. George Awad – Humber River’s Chief of Psychiatry - is an international champion in the fight to remove the stigmas often attributed to people with mental illness. He is particularly committed to eliminating those barriers in healthcare workplaces, where they can negatively affect the delivery of high quality care. Under Dr. Awad’s leadership, Humber River is partnering with organizations across Canada, including Reconnect Mental Health Services locally, to bring change, encouraging health care professionals to be even more respectful of these patients and the challenges they face. ED-PIP Humber River is one of fifteen hospitals selected by the Ministry of Health last year to participate in the Emergency Department Process Improvement Project (ED-PIP). ED-PIP is designed to find, test and then implement ways of improving the patient experience as they move from the Emergency Department to the inpatient units through to discharge. Lessons learned will be shared with all Ontario hospitals. The project relies on the contributions of staff and physicians from a cross–section of the hospital. The ED-PIP team completed the solution phase last year and has moved on to the pilot and implementation phase. COMMUNITY REPORT 2009 - 2010 HUMBER RIVER REGIONAL HOSPITAL 7 Humber River is one of the GTA’s largest providers of cancer care. Here pharmacy technician William Guerra prepares a chemotherapy solution in our cancer clinic lab. BEARY MERRY CHRISTMAS Our friends from the local newspapers always help brighten up the holiday season for our younger patients with their annual Beary Merry Christmas event. They drop by to hand out teddy bears to all our paediatric floor patients and anywhere in the hospital children are spending time during the holidays. They also take time to visit with the children, play some games and sing carols with them and their families. A big thank-you to Marg Middleton and everyone at Toronto Community News for helping spread holiday cheer at Humber River Regional Hospital! PLANNING FOR EMERGENCIES Humber River has a comprehensive plan in place to ensure your hospital functions during public health emergencies. Parts of that plan were tested during last fall’s H1N1 flu outbreak, and they worked very well. Our response to the outbreak included a comprehensive vaccination program inside the hospital, while outside a group of our physicians and staff offered to help the Keele Family Health Group run H1N1 vaccination clinics. Turnout was high and the clinics could not have happened without our staff and physicians stepping up. REACHING OUT TO OUR SENIORS Our seniors cherish their independence, and living at home for as long as possible is very important to them. Humber River’s Geriatric Outreach Program offers them in-home assessment and support, helping them achieve their highest possible level of function so that they can remain living in their community. The Geriatric Outreach Team includes physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and social workers. To make access easy, seniors can refer themselves or have a family member do so. Referrals are also accepted from physicians, healthcare professionals and community agencies. COMMUNITY REPORT 2009 - 2010 HUMBER RIVER REGIONAL HOSPITAL 9 NEW CARDIOVASCULAR CENTRE Humber River’s new Cardiovascular Centre treated its first patient in April of 2009. Located at our Church site, it consolidated the temporary Cardiology Clinic and the C200 Cardiology Clinic into a bright new patient care area. It’s equipped with the latest cardiology equipment thanks in part to a generous donation from our Volunteer Association! Of special interest: the Cardiovascular Centre was built using some of the latest Generic Output Specifications for hospital design as mandated by the provincial government. A little glimpse of the hospital of the future! SPECIAL HOLIDAY VISITORS Holidays in hospital are always hardest on the kids. We’re grateful that every Christmas Day, firefighters from our community fire station and police officers from 31 Division take time from their own celebrations to visit our paediatric patients. Sometimes Dr. Gilbert Miller, our Physician Director, Women’s & Children’s Health Program, finds his way into a picture or two! And they never come empty-handed. There’s always lots of gifts and goodies, and they never fail to bring plenty of smiles to the youngest faces in our hospital. Sparky also drops by to help liven the place up. MENTAL HEALTH CLINICAL DAY We share our expertise freely, and in turn often invite experts to visit and share their knowledge with us. Our Department of Psychiatry, Mental Health and Addictions hosted their annual Clinical Day last October. The theme and presentations for the Day supported Humber’s anti-stigma campaign. The keynote address by Dr. Heather Stuart discussed the “Stigma of Mental Illness – Why Stigma Should be Beaten.” Dr. Stuart is co-founder and co-chair of the Scientific Section on Stigma and Mental Disorders for the World Psychiatric Association, and is a recognized expert in this field. 10 HUMBER RIVER REGIONAL HOSPITAL COMMUNITY REPORT 2009 - 2010 Sheeba Pennickara (l), our ER Physician Assistant, is seen here with her mentor Dr. Laura Lee Copeland. Humber River is a partner in the Ministry of Health’s Physician Assistant pilot project, looking for ways Ontario hospitals can further reduce ER wait times. CHILD LIFE WEEK Every year, Humber River is proud to celebrate Child Life Week with its youngest patients. Organized by Humber River’s Child Life Specialists, family-centred activities engage children and their families in the hospital and community. The Teddy Bear Clinic is always a big hit, and hands-on information sessions educate the kids and their parents about the paediatric services available at Humber. Child Life Week helps to raise awareness about the Child Life Specialist role in the hospital and helps children and their families better understand the hospital experience. THE GIFT OF LIFE The Trillium Gift of Life Network (TGLN) hosted a special event for our OR staff last year in appreciation for the wonderful job the team has done as part of the Network. The event included emotional presentations from a TGLN donor recipient and a relative of a young donor. The TGLN supports activities relating to organ and tissue donations for transplant, with a goal of significantly increasing participation. Thank you to Cathy Weatherall, who is Humber River’s TGLN Organ and Tissue Donation Coordinator. STARLIGHT DONATION Allison Currie from the Starlight Children’s Foundation and Maty Cacciatore from Toys R Us invited staff from our Women’s and Children’s Health Program to visit the Toys R Us store in Vaughan last November. There they presented the Program with many wonderful gifts for the Finch site paediatrics lounge, including Nintendo Wii and DS systems, video games, DVD players and craft kits. They also provided the program with a one thousand dollar donation. In February they did the same for the kids at our Church site. A wonderful gift to our hospital! 12 HUMBER RIVER REGIONAL HOSPITAL COMMUNITY REPORT 2009 - 2010 reat hospital care comes in many forms. A caring bedside manner. Expert laparoscopic surgery. Good food. Sometimes it’s as simple as washing your hands properly. But when you think about it, hand hygiene for nurses and physicians - indeed for the entire hospital team - isn’t so simple. An effective hand hygiene program in a hospital setting requires vigilance and buy-in from everyone involved if it is to work. And it has to work. Proper hand hygiene is a huge factor COMMUNITY REPORT 2009 - 2010 in delivering safe patient care. Preventing the spread of hospital-acquired infections like c.difficile can be, in some cases, life saving. It’s so serious the provincial government audits hand hygiene compliance rates in Ontario hospitals, and reports the results publicly. In fact, last year Humber River’s Keele site had the best compliance rate in the province. The Church and Finch sites checked in not far behind. Impressive results now we’re hard at work to do even better next year. Humber River’s Infection Prevention and Control Program has worked hard to help support a culture of safety throughout our organization. They’ve set up a comprehensive hand hygiene program with both staff and physician champions. HUMBER RIVER REGIONAL HOSPITAL 13 Members of our Retail and Inpatient Food Services Teams show off the sustainable food choices at HRRH (from left to right): Veibe Muratovski, Soupy Kongmany, Cynthia Friesen, Sara Baker, Lina Casciaro and Pat Palacios. healthy environment is vital for a healthy community, and being ‘green’ is part of the culture at Humber River. We are working closely with Compass Canada to offer environmentally -friendly choices in our retail and inpatient food service. Some of these products include sustainable seafood, rainforest certified teas and cage-free eggs. This program complements the launch of Steamplicity last year. Our new Steamplicity menu system means that our inpatients are now enjoying healthier, fresher meals that 14 HUMBER RIVER REGIONAL HOSPITAL rival most restaurants for quality and great taste! Food Services staff help inpatients choose from a restaurant-style menu at the bedside, and use wireless tablets to immediately send the order to the kitchen. Trays are sent to the unit, where the food is cooked just minutes before service using the healthiest of cooking techniques - steam pressure. As a result food quality, taste and nutrient retention are all greatly improved. The feedback from our patients has been terrific! COMMUNITY REPORT 2009 - 2010 November 27th: HRRH staff, physicians, volunteers and community friends celebrated as Board Chair Norm Naumoff and MPP Monte Kwinter revealed the Government of Ontario’s Project Sign on the site of our new hospital. IT’S YOUR HOSPITAL Getting the word out to our community, sharing with them our vision for the future, and getting their feedback, is always interesting. Over the past decade we’ve used hundreds of town halls, ratepayer group meetings, open houses and other means to keep everyone updated on their hospital and our redevelopment project. In December Barb Collins dropped by CHIN Radio’s downtown studio to be a guest on the Gino Cucchi Show. Joined by our local MPP Laura Albanese, Barb answered callers’ questions about our plans and timelines for the new hospital. ENABLING BETTER CARE Ontario’s first digital hospital: For Humber River, it’s not about technology for technology’s sake. It’s about using the latest and best technology as an enabler to assist us in delivering even better care. Wireless voice recognition technology for instant bedside charting. Robotic equipment that helps us obtain test results in minutes. Internet access to high definition DI images. It’s using technology for two important goals: getting staff and physicians more time for interacting with patients and families; and improving safety and quality through efficiency. 16 HUMBER RIVER REGIONAL HOSPITAL HRRH Chief of Staff Dr. Jack Barkin tests one of the latest robotic surgery machines. COMMUNITY REPORT 2009 - 2010 AUGIMERI TOUR To better inform the planning for our new hospital, Councillor Maria Augimeri gave us a tour of the local neighbourhood last July. As their representative for over 25 years, Councillor Augimeri knows the area better than anyone. We gained an even better understanding of the history and heritage of the community, and discussed the positive role our new hospital could play in furthering enhancements to the neighbourhood already planned by the City. We’ll build on those ideas as we work through the design for our new hospital. Councillor Maria Augimeri (far left) with members of the HRRH/Downsview campus planning team. NIAGARA Our COO Barb Collins was one of the expert panelists at the Healthcare Infrastructure Summit in Niagara-on-the-Lake last February. The Summit is an invitation-only symposium that brings together a diversity of leaders in related healthcare fields to share information on a variety of topics. During the symposium Barb participated in a discussion on Technology Obsolescence Protection. She also spoke on our redevelopment plan roadmap and some of our ideas around technology in the new hospital. COMMUNITY REPORT 2009 - 2010 HUMBER RIVER REGIONAL HOSPITAL 17 Affiliated with If there is one thing about Humber River that most people don’t know, it’s how big a role we play in training medical students. Last year more than seventy students - clinical fellows, residents and interns - came here to learn from some of the very best physicians and hospital staff there is anywhere. We are formally affiliated with the University of Toronto Medical School, and have partnerships with many other schools across Canada: McGill; 18 HUMBER RIVER REGIONAL HOSPITAL UBC; Queen’s; the University of Ottawa. And while the majority comes from Ontario, we attract medical students from around the world. Saudi Arabia. South Africa. Poland. Thailand. The USA: we’ve had someone from every corner of the globe come to Humber to learn the latest techniques and protocols. You’ll read about a few of them in the next couple of pages. In fact, our teaching program has been so successful that we expanded it last year to take even more students. Cutting-edge programs in Nephrology, Bariatric and minimally-invasive surgery, Mental Health and Cardiology are the most in demand, but areas like family health and emergency are attracting more interest each year. COMMUNITY REPORT 2009 - 2010 DR. POREPA Dr. Derek Chew University of Toronto Clinical Clerk “Training at Humber River I notice every day that staff and physicians really care about the patients and their families. It’s great to learn in a community environment like this and it’s also rewarding to work with Dr. Porepa. I know Dr. Porepa has a long-standing reputation for providing excellence in paediatric care at Humber River and it’s easy to see why. He’s wonderful with his patients; very hands-on; and when it comes to teaching, he’s one of the best. Thanks to the diversity of his practise, I feel like I’ve gained valuable knowledge in so many areas of paediatrics; all while doing so in one of the friendliest and most professional hospitals in the Greater Toronto area.” Dr. Derek Chew DR. AWAD “When my husband landed a job in Toronto I wanted to make the most of it and find the perfect career advancement opportunity for myself. I knew Humber River Regional Hospital’s Mental Health and Addictions Program was world renowned. When I contacted them, I was thrilled to receive a response from Dr. George Awad – one of the most internationally recognized speakers in the mental health field. As an adult psychiatrist at Tygerberg Hospital in Capetown, South Africa, I understand the importance of working with the best in the field. Having the chance to work as a Clinical Fellow alongside Dr. Awad is a golden opportunity.” Dr. Cathlene Seller Dr. Cathlene Seller Adult psychiatrist Tygerberg Hospital Capetown, S.A. DR. KUMAR Dr. Mona Khurana University of Toronto Family Medicine Resident COMMUNITY REPORT 2009 - 2010 “After working for a month in Humber River’s Emergency Department earlier this year, I feel fortunate to be back in one of the most fast-paced and diverse hospitals in the province. It is rewarding to work under the great mentorship of Dr. Rakesh Kumar while gaining an appreciation of community and emergency medicine. With a large and multicultural patient population, Humber River is an excellent place to learn from many of the top physicians in Ontario. It’s especially encouraging to see that so many residents who trained at Humber River come on board as staff physicians after graduation. Humber River is an exciting place to build a future.” Dr. Mona Khurana HUMBER RIVER REGIONAL HOSPITAL 19 BOB PARKE “When I found out I had to do a clinical practicum in bioethics, I spent a lot of time talking to people in the field about the best person to work alongside. That’s how I learned about Humber’s clinical ethicist Bob Parke. Through his guidance, patience and leadership Bob has exposed me to the unique clinical experiences at Humber River and helped me to understand the day-to-day ethical questions that staff, patients and their families encounter. It’s grass roots bioethics at its best; and I’m learning about it in one of the most multicultural environments in the province. Humber River feels like home.” Judy Cooper Judy Cooper University of Toronto Masters Student in Bioethics DR. ANTHONY MASCIA Dr. Anthony Mascia HRRH Radiologist VANOC 2010 Medical Staff “It was an honour to represent Humber River, our outstanding Diagnostic Imaging Department and Canada at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games. As a consulting radiologist for the host medical team, I treated athletes from many countries. For the majority of the Games I was based in Whistler, where I worked caring for injured athletes directly ‘on the field’. The support and messages I received from HRRH colleagues throughout the Games was unbelievable. Whether it’s at the Olympics in Vancouver or Australia, the World Track and Field Championships or the Super Bowl, I’m happy to represent Humber River. ” Dr. Anthony Mascia PATTY QUINAN “Being voted President-elect of the Canadian Association of Nephrology Nurses and Technologists (CANNT) last year was one of the biggest accomplishments of my career. I know that working at Humber River, and being a part of our internationally recognized Nephrology and Inpatient Dialysis Centre Teams, had a positive influence on the colleagues across Canada who voted for me. It makes me proud to represent a hospital that is so invested in its patients and also to share knowledge and expertise from Humber River with other professionals across the country and beyond.” Patty Quinan 20 HUMBER RIVER REGIONAL HOSPITAL Patty Quinan HRRH Clinical Nurse Specialist - Dialysis President-Elect CANNT COMMUNITY REPORT 2009 - 2010 orking in the laboratories of one of Canada’s largest acute care hospitals can be challenging. Doing it well and with excellent teamwork is remarkable. Last November our Laboratory Services Department underwent its formal Accreditation survey by the Ontario Laboratory Accreditation (OLA) Division of the Ministry of Health. During three days of rigourous examination, seven outside experts audited our Church and Finch laboratories for compliance with more than 500 performance standards, COMMUNITY REPORT 2009 - 2010 including safety, specimen management and all ‘point of care’ testing done at Humber River. At both sites, our teams scored over 90 per cent. Very impressive, especially since almost 200 new OLA standards were released ten months before the survey, instead on the normal two-to-four year implementation period. Our laboratory teams were praised for their strength of communication and their teamwork with clients. The surveyors were also very “impressed with the reporting of Critical Values, especially the tracking documentation.” HUMBER RIVER REGIONAL HOSPITAL 21 umber River Regional Hospital is leading the way in environmental strategies for existing hospital buildings in Ontario. What began with a few small ideas has turned into a culture of environmental sensitivity that we are building on every day. Since establishing our Green Committee in 2003 - recognized by the OHA for their “outstanding contribution in reducing health care’s environmental impact” – there are a number of projects and strategies that have been implemented across our organization to reduce our impact on the environment. There are many examples of how well our commitment to being ‘green’ is working. For example, we’ve reduced water consumption by an average of 96,000 litres per day compared to 2001. This conserves precious resources and allows us to put more money into patient care. And we’re being asked to share our expertise. This past year alone the City of Toronto’s Better Buildings Partnership, the Canadian Coalition for Green Health Care, and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority all asked us to share our advice and experience with other organizations in the GTA. Humber River’s ‘green’ culture is a core value that permeates the planning for our new hospital. The design and construction of the new hospital will contribute to a healthy environment and by extension enhance patient and community health. The project will adhere to the guidelines and sustainability principles of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) rating system, with a goal of achieving the highest possible LEED certification. LEED buildings focus on healthy indoor environments, reduced greenhouse gas emissions and efficient use of energy, water and other resources. Green roof technology. Water permeable asphalt. Low VOC (volatile organic compound) building materials & furniture for better air quality. Walking and bike paths. The new Humber River Regional Hospital will be one of the most environmentally-friendly buildings in Canada. 22 HUMBER RIVER REGIONAL HOSPITAL COMMUNITY REPORT 2009 - 2010 “I am deeply humbled and honoured to give back to the hospital that has taken such great care of my father,” said Pat DiCapo in front of a large crowd last winter. “To all of the doctors and nurses: thank you for keeping my dad alive.” On February 19th, The Vito DiCapo Dialysis Centre was revealed as the new name for Humber River’s Inpatient Dialysis Centre. The renaming was in recognition of Pat and Jennifer DiCapo’s generous donation to our Foundation. Their gift was made in honour of the great work performed by our Nephrology Program, notably the inpatient dialysis centre, and of the wonderful care Pat’s father has received as a dialysis patient at Humber River Regional Hospital. Vito DiCapo is a long-time patient of Humber River and his wife, Letizia DiCapo, once worked at HRRH. COMMUNITY REPORT 2009 - 2010 Vito, Pat and Jennifer were joined by other members of the DiCapo family, staff and physicians from the hospital, Foundation representatives and others to help reveal a new sign announcing the name change for the Centre. The funds donated by the DiCapo’s will help the Program’s staff and physicians deliver even better care to their patients. The gift will support the acquisition of new equipment, professional development and other enhancements to our internationally recognized Nephrology Program. HUMBER RIVER REGIONAL HOSPITAL 23 “In appreciation of the wonderful care provided by your fine hospital.” A heartfelt phrase in a simple letter, signed by a community friend and his devoted wife, and accompanied by the largest donation in Humber River’s history: ten million dollars! On May 27, 2009 Mrs. Helen Hull, on behalf of her late husband Murphy and their family, announced the donation in celebration of the legacy left by one of the hospital’s most cherished friends: Marian (Murphy) Hull. 24 HUMBER RIVER REGIONAL HOSPITAL Mr. Hull was a member of the hospital’s Board for over 30 years, including three years as Board Chair. Mrs. Hull said “during the last year of his life he was particularly moved by the sensitivity and help the hospital and staff showed to him.” Barbara Minnett, Murphy’s daughter, said that part of the reason for the size of the donation was the wonderful care her father received at Humber River in the last months of his life. “The way he was treated, you can’t pretend that. It wasn’t just because he was Murphy Hull,” she said. “He was given the human touch. Dr. Ptak, Dr. Sam Berger, Dr. Hagen were so wonderful with him. It wasn’t just the doctors, it was everyone. The nurses… everybody was very, very real. I hope this is where healthcare is going because it’s very important in healing.” COMMUNITY REPORT 2009 - 2010 Mrs. Helen Hull (c) with daughters Barbara Minnett (l) and Cindy MacKenzie ur volunteers have been at the heart of Humber River Regional Hospital for more than sixty years. They provide help and compassion to those most in need of comfort: our patients and their families. They support Humber River’s staff and physicians in their work. They raise funds for vital equipment. 26 HUMBER RIVER REGIONAL HOSPITAL They provide scholarships for local students. They link our hospital to our community. The tremendous commitment and teamwork from our volunteers can be seen in over 50 departments throughout Humber River. In the last year, they contributed over 67,000 hours of service to HRRH. They also found enough time to raise $161,500! Their efforts make a big difference in the lives of our staff and physicians; and in the care they deliver each day. HRRH Volunteers are loyal friends - we couldn’t do it without them! COMMUNITY REPORT 2009 - 2010 HOLLY FAIR The Holly Fair has been part of the December holiday season at HRRH for almost 45 years. People come from across the organization and the community to browse the Fair’s variety of baked treats and handmade goods. “Every year I buy several pairs of the cozy, hand knit slippers to give out to my family and friends. The Holly Fair makes holiday shopping easier especially since I don’t have to leave the hospital. I’m really happy that my Program benefits from sales like this one.” Beverley Philp, Director, Women’s and Children’s Health Program VENDOR PROGRAM Patients are our number one priority, but helping the community is also important. The HRRH Vendor Program – run by Volunteer Gilda Pellegrini – helps support small, home-based businesses in our neighbourhood. “Gilda has a wonderful sense of humour and her efficiency is bounded by her endless energy. By having vendors at the hospital, Humber River supports the small businesses in the community and also raises money for the people who need it most: patients and their families.” Denise Catalano - Vendor VALENTINE’S DAY ROSE SALE Every February, in celebration of Valentine’s Day, HRRH Volunteers sell bouquets of roses to staff, physicians, patients and visitors throughout the organization. The rose sale adds even more colour to the hospital lobbies. Whether they are selling flowers, raffle tickets or homemade items, the Humber River Volunteer Association makes raising funds for our hospital a priority. “I look forward to the various sales throughout the hospital; it’s a wonderful way to pick up a gift for someone special and to support our hospital at the same time.” Marcia Brown, HRRH Telecommunications COMMUNITY REPORT 2009 - 2010 HUMBER RIVER REGIONAL HOSPITAL 27 reat hospitals and great hospital care are built on many things: expertise, compassion, experience. They are also built on the strength of community partnerships, and for Humber River Regional Hospital the most fundamental of these is the relationship with our Foundation. If you ask HRRH Foundation President Debra Bond-Gorr in turn what makes her organization great, she’ll tell you that it’s the terrific relationships they have with so many individuals and organizations in our community. “We share a message of hope, of possibilities, of achievement with our community every day. And you’d be amazed at how quickly they embrace the Humber story when they hear it.
