Orman has never been to the country until now, but she
has a soft spot for Filipinos. Back home in the United States,
four Filipinos are trusted household staff. “There are no greater
workers than Filipinos,” she says. Believing in the Filipino skill,
she specifically chose a call center in the Philippines to handle
communications for her newly launched prepaid cash card in the
US.
Her visit was facilitated by philanthropist Doris Magsaysay
Ho, a longtime friend of Orman’s spouse and manager, Kathy
Travis, who lived in Hong Kong from 1980 to 2000, and was a
frequent visitor of the country.
A youthful-looking 61, Orman was born in Chicago, Illinois.
She studied social work and worked as a waitress before landing
a job as a financial advisor at Merrill Lynch. She started her own

The Block Rosary Crusade of
Toronto, was founded by a small
group Filipino devotees of the
Virgin Mary on Oct. 2, 1982 in
Scarborough. They have grown and is
reported to be the largest and oldest
organized Block Rosary devotees
in Canada, with over 600 families,
mainly of Filipino descent, who
brings the statues of the Virgin Mary
and Infant Jesus to the homes of the
member family and pray the Rosary
daily.
The steering committee finalized
the budget and plans for this
celebration. Dinner and main
program will be at St. Peter & Paul
Banquet Hall in Scarborough. The
Committee ensured that the venue
is immaculate, a delicious dinner is
served and the evening Program will
be the best, complete with Philippine
and Goan music and dances (20%
of the Block Rosary members are of
Goan descent).
Distribution of the well design
tickets started. Memorabilia shall be
distributed to the guests. Motif of the
site is “Filipiniana.”, and the venue
will be converted to a typical “PISTA
SA NAYON “in the Philippines.

celebrated on Saturday, Sep, 29,
2012 at the Prince of Peace Church

and Mass will be concelebrated by
the Pastors of the churches covered
by the areas where the Block Rosary
families are located.

MANILA, Philippines – Although Iza Calzado has
already embraced ABS-CBN as her new home, a
dear former colleague in GMA-7 seems to be not
too happy with her move, particularly veteran host
and talent manager, German Moreno.
The Master Showman is apparently upset at Iza,
who signed a three-year contract with ABS-CBN
last January.
“Nabigla na lamang ako sa kanyang desisyon.
Siyempre tinuring mo rin na isa sa mga anak-anakan
mo si Iza. Siyempre iba rin naman ‘yung maalala
ka man lamang na sabihin sa’yo kung ano ‘yung
pinoproblema niya. Hindi naman ‘yan ang hiwalayan
na komo kung meron kang tinatanim na sama ng
loob.
“Pwede mong matiis ‘yan in a manner na

plans to get hitched
MANILA, Philippines - While Kapuso actress Marian Rivera isn’t about to make a plunge into
marriage, she’s more than ready to make it public once she has decided on it. The question if
she’s ready to tie the knot with beau Dingdong Dantes popped up when Marian was caught
wearing a wedding gown in a scene in “Beloved,” where her character is set to marry Mikael
Daez’ character. In real life, however, marriage is far from her mind.
“Darating tayo diyan,” she said, adding, “sabi ko nga sa inyo kapag dumating sa punto
na ganyan ay ipapatawag ko kayong lahat. Pero sa ngayon ay wala pa naman.”

has recently approved meaningful community-wide & volunteer-based projects and activities

BI issues new Guidelines
for Au Pairs to Europe
Rukles streamlines Procedures
MANILA, Philippines - The Bureau
of Immigration (BI) ordered its
immigration officers in the airports and
seaports to facilitate the unhampered
exit of au pairs bound for Europe after
the government lifted the ban on their
departure.
Commissioner Ricardo David Jr.,
issued the memorandum to all its
officers nationwide to implement the
new guidelines.
David said an au pair is an unmarried
person between 18 and 30 years of
age who, under a cultural exchange
arrangement, was picked to stay with a
European host family to enable them
to learn the culture and language of the
European community.

Sin Taxes Need to be Raised
Philippine Cigarette and
Alcohol prices are among
the lowest in Asia
MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) The government needs to increase “sin
taxes” if it wants to achieve its growth
target of 7 to 8 percent within the next
six years.
World Bank Economist Karl
Kendrick T. Chua said that increasing
taxes on cigarettes and alcohol will give
an additional 0.6 to 0.9 percent of GDP
to economic growth. This will also help
in plugging leaks in taxation.
The Philippines has one of the
cheapest cigarettes and alcohol in Asia
owing to low taxes imposed on these
products.
Earlier estimates made by the World
Bank revealed that Philippine sin taxes
are low compared to Thailand, Laos,
India and Pakistan.
Health advocates claim such policy
has increase incidence of lung and
heart diseases and puts a burden on the
country’s public health.
The finance department said that by
raising sin taxes, the government may
be able to raise much needed revenues
to narrow the budget gap and support
development projects.

supports a bill sponsored by Cavite
Representative Joseph Emilio Abaya.
Abaya’s bill proposes a unitary tax
system, higher excise tax on cigarettes
and adjustment of cigarette taxes based
on future increases in inflation. The bill
is now being discussed in the Ways and
Means Committee in the House of
Representatives.
Tobacco manufacturers opposed
the proposed bill and warned that this
will penalize the industry and the 2.7
million tobacco farmers.
In a separate briefing Chris Nelson,
president of Philip Morris Fortune
Tobacco Corp., the biggest tobacco
manufacturer in the country, said
increased taxes will erode the local
cigarette market.
Nelson said he and his partners are
“extremely worried over the impact of
higher excise tax for cigarettes.”
Meanwhile, apart from increasing
sin taxes, Chua said the government
also needs to improve its tax
administration.

OF MANILA
There was no Wang-Wang allowed in the Philippines,
however the 2 motorcycle police escorts were able to
weave us out of the heavy traffic to Manila City Hall. It was
a grand reception indeed . . . a 24 piece band welcomed
us upon arrival at the City Hall . As we stepped down our
coaster, a lei of shells were carefully placed on each one of
us by beautiful ladies in Maria Clara outfits and gentlemen
in Barong. Everyone was escorted to a red carpet, fit for
Dignitaries.
The delegation was headed by Consul General Pedro
Chan, Miss Philippines-Canada Rachel Pantaleon, Mrs.
Philippines-Canada Noemi Milanes, Angel ng Tahanan Imee
Solomon, WCOPA (World Championship of the Performing
Arts) Champion Gian Carlo Bobila and the rest of the
delegation from PCCF (Philippine Canadian Charitable
Foundation) headed by Jun & Rosemer Enverga. The group
was led to a group tour of City Hall by no other than Miss
International Gemma Cruz-Araneta and finally into the
Grand Villegas Hall were Congen Pedro Chan and the
PCCF delegation was given the Symbolic Key to the City
of Manila, a tribute to the hard work and dedication in
advocating for charity and community by everyone.
It was the beginning of the Chinese New Year, hence,
the group were treated to a sumptuous lunch in a grand
Chinese restaurant in Ongpin, Chinatown Manila. Before
we parted ways with Mayor Lim and a number of Manila
Councillors, we were treated to a tour of Manila, in our own
horse drawn carriages through Fort Santiago and ending
with a grand salute in Luneta. It was a memorable day
indeed and an experience of a lifetime for the delegation.
Our greatest appreciation to Mayor Lim and Consul
General Pedro Chan for making the trip truly memorable.
Next stop, ANCOP Village Inauguration, the GMA Pinoy TV
shows: Party Filipinas, Eat Bulaga, and one of the wonders
of the world, the Underground River of Palawan. Last stop
Malacanang Palace visit.

to finally have its Department of
Information and Communications
Technology (DICT) as the Senate
passed in second reading the decadeold proposal for its creation.
Senator Edgardo Angara lauded
the Senate’s passage on Second
Reading of the DICT bill.
“That much of our lives is already
influenced heavily by ICT should
only motivate us all the more to
focus on developing the necessary
infrastructure and implementing the
appropriate policies,” Angara said,
noting that around 45 percent of the
population has access to the Internet.
As chairman of the Senate
Committee
on
Science
and
Technology (COMSTE), Angara
is the main author and sponsor
of Senate Bill No. 50 (under
Committee Report No. 53), calling
primarily for the reorganization
of
the
communications-related
agencies under the Department of
Transportation and Communications
(DOTC) into a separate agency.
The Senator stressed that ICTenabled industries such as the
Information Technology and Business
Process Outsourcing (IT-BPO)
industry will benefit greatly with a
DICT in place.
“This new department will not only
provide meaningful policy support to
these information-driven industries,
but also ensure that other government
agencies get to utilize ICT for
improved governance,” Angara said.
On the Senate floor, amendments to
Section 2 of the bill (“Declaration of
Policy”) were proposed to reflect the
role of ICT in disaster risk reduction
and management initiatives, which
Angara agreed to.
“I think that’s a very appropriate
and timely addition to the objectives
of this bill,” he said. “In fact, ICT is the
enabling instrument in forewarning
people of disasters.”

Management Center in the Hyogo
Prefecture in Japan which he described
as “fully wired and connected to all
the disaster centers throughout the
world.”

Jessie revealed that she and Enrique
are good friends even before they

(sa Star Magic).” Enrique was part of
Star Magic Batch 16 while Jessie was
launched ahead of the actor as she
was part of th ABS-CBN’s talent arm’s batch 15. Jessie
also confirmed that Enrique once courted her, but they
were too young during that time. She said though the
romance didn’t flourish between them, they remained
close friends in and out of the showbiz world. “Before

Androgynous Model
MANILA, Philippines - BB recalled flying to New York in
2010 to try his luck in modeling. The journey, however, was
not only long but a challenging one. He had to “work on”
himself in order to fulfill his aspirations.
“I walked six miles in the morning and six miles at night.
I do yoga, everything. Tapos there was a time na nagahensya ako. Tapos sabi lang
sa’kin, ‘You can’t just fit in the dress.
So if you think you can fit in the
dress, come back to us.’ Ang lola,
‘day, kailangan na ‘yung cleansing,
for 24 days. I did that. I was 140
when they said that to me. I went
down to 115. Konting disiplina lang
po!” he proudly related.
BB leads a normal life in the
States, walking on the subway,
doing his laundry, going to the market, and cooking
his meals. This kind of life made him realize, “’Pag hindi
ka gagalaw, walang gagalaw for you. “At bawal
magkasakit… I was with my dogs... I’m taking care of [them].
So kahit blizzard siya, ‘day, every morning, nandyan ako sa
kalye’t nilalakad ko ang aso ko,” he added.
Although he had to fend for himself, BB realized that,
indeed, no man is an island. “Noon akala ko I can do
it myself, I can be independent. So ‘yun ‘yung mga
pagbabago na, I tried to relate to people more, and then
pagdating sa trabaho, kailangan mo talagang seryosohin.
And you can’t be too conscious of yourself,” he said.
Another aspect of his life in New York that he has to
grapple with is the discrimination against androgynous
models, whom he said are considered “the new Black in the
fashion industry.”
“I was considered an androgynous model. Basically it
is gearing towards genderless fashion. Ang dami ngayong
modelo sa New York na lalake pero kinukuha sila to model
female clothes… Kung ang ordinaryong babae will prove
herself 100 percent, we have to prove ourselves 200
percent or even more,” shared BB.

The Cagayan North Association has just completed its first medical
mission in the Province of Cagayan with great success. The mission
started in January 23- 30, 2012 serving the biggest and most populous
towns of Cagayan. As expected a big crowd wanting free medical care
eagerly awaited at the site early in the morning even before the start of
SOUND sleep is key to weight management.
A typical office worker spends a third of his
day at work, seated while doing mental work and
incidental physical activities such as walking and
moving from one place to another.
The next third of his day is spent relaxing,
running errands, or doing fitness activities such
as running or gym workouts.
Lack of sleep definitely results in lack of
energy, preventing you from burning extra
calories. Studies have also shown that a sleepdeprived athlete will experience problems after
90 minutes, like hypoglycemia and “hitting the
wall” in marathons.
Another human hormone important in weight
control is the human growth hormone (HGH),
responsible for controlling the body’s fat and
muscle proportion. Lack of sleep will result in
decreased HGH secretion and increased ability
to store more fat in the stomach.
Lack of sleep will affect your immune system
and your health because, according to a 2010
study, people who get less than six hours of
sleep a night are more likely to develop Type 2
diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Those who engaged in at least 150 minutes of
physical activity a week experienced 65-percent
improved sleep quality, and reported falling
asleep faster and experiencing less sleepiness
during the day. So try to get even 30 minutes
of exercise on the days when you find it hard to
sleep.
The time of eating and the quality and
quantity of food affect sleep, because you have
a harder time sleeping if you do not follow a
regular eating schedule. For example, if you eat
six hours before bedtime, you will get hungry
again right before you sleep, so you will eat and
disrupt sleeping time.
Weight is a contributing factor to the quality
of your sleep. If you are overweight or obese,
you are susceptible to developing breathing
problems like sleep apnea that disrupt your sleep
and cause snoring.
Lastly, lifestyle skills play a big role in getting
a good sleep.
Learning to manage your time, to eliminate
your stressors, to plan your day and to fix your
sleep environment can help ensure the right
amount and quality of sleep.
More young Filipinos smoking
MANILA, Philippines - It is not just
“noynoying” that young Filipinos are
adopting from President Benigno
Aquino III’s known habit.
More and more of the country’s
youth are lighting up, according
to the National Youth Commission
(NYC). The NYC has raised the
alarm about the increasing trend among the
country’s youth to take up smoking and urged the
government to impose stricter controls and higher
taxes on tobacco and liquor.
“Certainly, based on these [the survey’s]
estimates, the health of teenage Filipinos are
now direly at risk from tobacco exposure and
future smoking-related diseases. The Global Youth
survey said it expected the uptake in tobacco
use to rise even higher in 2011 because of the
decrease in the price of cigarettes and the high
demand for tobacco products. The survey said
around 50.8 percent, or half of all Filipinos aged
13 to 15, would have tried a tobacco product

by 2011. The survey said young
people who are not smoking would
be exposed to second-hand smoke.
NYC chair Leon Flores called
for raising the price of cigarettes
to discourage young people from
taking up the habit. “If the cost of
cigarettes is high, fewer people will
buy it. This is just one of the steps we see to curb
this vice among the youth,” Flores said. He cited a
recent survey conducted by the University of the
Philippines Communication Research Society with
Health Justice Philippines that found 60 percent
of the sample population would quit smoking if
cigarettes were to be priced at P5 per stick.
Battle over sin taxes
The NYC is sounding the alarm over the
dangers of smoking as the battle for higher excise
taxes on tobacco and alcohol rages between
and among health experts, government, and
cigarette makers and breweries.

to end. Many had waited
hours after travelling
long distances on foot
or by other means of
transportation and some
came from neighbouring
towns. Tents were installed
and streets were closed.
Young and old, mothers
with children, patiently
waited for their turn either
to find relief for an illness
or for the much needed surgery and then lined up at the pharmacy for
their free medicines.
The project started as a dream early in 2011 by the Cagayan North
Association Officers and Executives as a way of giving back to the
people of Cagayan. Supported by various fund-raising activities, this
dream became a reality in the fall of 2011 when enough funds were
generated to purchase medicines worth several thousands of dollars. The
group personally accompanied the six balikbayan boxes full of branded
prescription and OTC medicine and medical supplies for distribution to
the poor.
The group coordinated the medical mission with Archbishop Serge
Utleg, Archdiocese of Tuguegarao and some local government officials
in the towns of Solana, Aparri & Gonzaga to ensure maximum
efficiency. Likewise, Archbishop Utleg graciously hosted the group at
the Archbishop’s palace. In appreciation for his kind gesture, the group
provided monetary contribution to support his humanitarian projects.
President Glenn Uy headed the medical team with Dr. Andy Umoquit
(originally from Buguey-Adviser), Dr. Joan Utleg Del Rosario (from
Solana- Adviser) Dr. Danny Del Rosario (Adviser) and Mena Uy
(Pharmacist). Other officers who joined and gave their time in this
endeavour to help the less fortunate were: Cynthia Umoquit (PRO),
Hayda (PRO) and Art Villacete (from Piat-Adviser), Victor & Precy

Orman is only too familiar with Filipinos’
idiosyncrasies.
“What’s unique to the Philippines is this
built-in culture that one person could take
care of a lot of people, a built-in culture
that if you leave the Philippines and you
go abroad to make money, it’s absolutely
your obligation to send home that money
whether you can afford to or not,” she says.
Orman points out what she thinks
Filipinos need to work on, especially
those who depend on family members
working abroad, in order to achieve what
she foresees to be a “dramatic growth and
greatness” in the country’s economy.
She explains why it’s vital for Filipino
parents to teach their children early about
financial responsibility, and why sometimes
withholding money from a loved one is
actually helping them.
Orman also reveals plans to help
Filipinos, beginning in small villages, just as
she and Travis did in South Africa where
they married.
Orman says financial issues are universal
and that people are afraid that they do
not know how to make money and that
they trust others more than they trust
thmeselves. It is the biggest mistake people
have.
Credit cards are regarded as eveil by a lot
of people. If you cannot pay in full at the
end of the month, you’re already in trouble.
“The Philippines needs to start looking
into why it’s allowed to push credit cards
to people. Credit card dealers are equally as
bad as drug dealers. But it’s legal for them
to come out in public and say, ‘Here, little
boy, little girl, here’s a credit card for you.
Go and buy things you can’t afford.’ I think
if the Philippines could just learn from
the mistakes of the United States, and the
second somebody is late on a payment, and
the second somebody goes over their credit
limit, their credit card should be frozen.

require credit cards. Say, buying online or
checking into a hotel.
SO: If you have debit cards here, why not
open an account, get a card attached to that
account? It’s a far better way to do things.
You just introduced a debit
card in the US…
SO: It’s a prepaid card, very different
from a debit card. In the US, if you have
bounced, two or three checks, you’re in
what’s called the check system. If you’re
in the check system and you have been
irresponsible, you can’t open a bank
account. You can’t open an account at
a credit union. But people need plastic
in order to operate, whether ordering
online, to do this or that. They can’t walk
around with cash because nobody’s really
taking cash that much. A prepaid card is
a card that you’re automatically approved
for regardless of your credit history. It’s
really for the poor people, those who don’t
have money, who don’t qualify for a bank
account… It’s for a specific group of people
called the un-banked and under-banked in
the US.
Filipino parents have a tendency to
coddle their children. Children live with
their parents even after college, and it’s
unusual for Filipino parents to demand rent
or living expenses from their child even
when s/he already has a job. What would
you tell these parents?
SO: Parents need to understand that
even if they ask the children for living
expenses, it doesn’t mean that they have to
take that money and do something with
it. They could take that money and save
it for their children, so that when their
children move out, the parents could give
that money to the children to help them
make a downpayment for a home. But I
do think it’s important that children learn
the responsibility of what it takes to pay for
something, what it takes to eat. You start to
train them so that when they do leave the
house, they understand that, “Oh it’s gonna
cost me money to buy food, it’s gonna
cost me to have water and electricity,” the
realities in life. You’re helping them rather
than making the situation as just taking
care of them. If you charge them and show
them that this is their part of the bill…
They graduated school, they’re making
money, and they should pay for that. If you
want to and you can afford to, why not save
it for them and when they move out, you
now have a lump sum of money that you
can give them that they themselves created,
so that they can see how that works.
Parents are quick to bail out
their children when they get
into money troubles.
SO: It’s not unique to the Philippines.
Most parents will do anything to bail
out their children. What’s unique to the
Philippines is this built-in culture that one
person could take care of a lot of people,
a built-in culture that if you leave the
Philippines and you go abroad to make
money, it’s absolutely your obligation
to send home that money whether you
can afford to or not. And there’s nothing
wrong with that. But sometimes when
you send things to people… You know I
have a saying, “When is helping hurting,
and when is hurting helping?” Sometimes
when you give and you give, people never
have the ability to rise up and see what
they can do on their own. In a very strange
way it keeps people down. It keeps them
thinking that they can’t do something
unless someone sends them money. If
something happens to that person, say,
they lose their job, that one person has now
affected the lives of four, five people that
they’ve been sending money home to. And
they don’t even have money saved because
they sent all that money home. Now they’re
all suffering. They don’t have to send all the
money home! Over time, there’s nothing
wrong with that. I think there’s a better
way to do it than how it is being done. But
I understand that it’s a cultural event, that
it’s an obligatory event. I’m just not sure
that helping people who can take care of
themselves is really helping the country, the
family, and the people.
While most Filipinos don’t get their first
job until after they finish college, unlike in
the US when you’re practically on your own
by the time they turn 18, orman believes
that in the next few years, the Philippines
is about to go through a dramatic change.
“I think the stock market will grow,
real estate will grow, and more and more
people will own condos. It will start to be
a thriving economy in a whole different
way than you’ve experienced in the past. It’s
gonna be interesting, says Orman.
Orman believes there’s nothing wrong
with saving if you’re not investing. There’s
nothing wrong with not having a car or
having a 10 year old car.
She also advises people to pay off debt
than save.
“Debt here is very expensive. Debt could
be 25, 35 percent [interest] or even higher
on credit cards. If interest is savings is 2%,
ti does not make sense to save. Pay your
debt first.”
As for entrepreneurship, she advises
taking it in small steps.
“Sometimes you have a dream besides
just working for somebody. You can try it
little by little, but don’t go borrowing all
that money if you’ve never done it before.
Do it very small, start small and if you’re
making money then grow into it. Don’t go
full blown if you don’t know what you’re

Remove frivolities
MANILA, Philippines—Manila
Archbishop Luis Antonio Tagle
urged the faithful to avoid frivolous
practices, such as having dogs for
ring bearers or having planners tell
bishops what to do at weddings, that
dilute faith and the solemnity of
Catholic religious celebrations.
Tagle said that sometimes
Catholics treat liturgical celebrations
and even the sacraments as if they
were mere “social gatherings or
cultural traditions” without realizing
the depth of spiritual meaning or
significance of these events and
rituals.
“This is one great challenge for us
during this year of faith because our
liturgy and sacraments, it is sad to say,
sometimes are no longer considered
as celebrations of our faith,” Tagle
told the Manila Archdiocesan
General Pastoral Assembly at the
Paco Catholic School in Manila.
“Sometimes, faith is the last thing
we focus on in the sacraments. The
sacraments sometimes become mere
social events or just cultural traditions
with the faith being the last thing we
consider,” he added.
But the reminder did not come
across to his audience as a stern
admonition from a high churchman.
Tagle, acting more like a stand-up
comedian, had his standing-roomonly audience at the Paco school
auditorium in stitches much of
the time as he recalled some of the
weird practices he encountered in his
ministry.
“Once, I received a letter from
someone who was getting married
and who was asking permission if
they could have their dog as their ring
bearer,” Tagle said. “The dog had been
with them for a long time, but what
had the dog got to do with our faith?
What has become of marriage?”
Tgale said he once reminded a
bride about the dress code inside the
church but the bride retorted: “Why
does the Church still interfere with
that. You are not the one who’s going
to pay for my marriage gown.”
“But what you are wearing should
speak of your faith. The symbols that
you use should speak of your faith,”
Tagle said.
He also noted that the popular
practice today of closing church
doors before the bride walks down
the aisle to the altar.

entered but when the bride is about
to go in, the door is closed. There are
many weddings like that today. Why
close the door? You’ll spend the rest
of your married life closing doors,”
Tagle said, jokingly alluding to what
happens in the bedroom.
“That is no longer faith. That’s a
gimmick, paborloloy, ka-ek-ekan na
lang yan (that’s frivolity, foolishness).
Imagine, closing the door on your
bride,” he added, sighing, “Hay
naku.”
But Tagle gave his best ribbing
to that most modern addition to
marriage: the wedding planner.
“There was a wedding I attended
that was already 45 minutes late.
But I had already agreed to another
appointment after it,” Tagle recalled.
“I approached the groom and
asked: `Why haven’t you started. Is
the bride already here?’ Yes. `Are the
godparents already here? Yes. `So
why haven’t you started?”
The archbishop was referred to
the wedding planner, who explained
to him the reason for the delay: the
butterflies had yet to arrive.
“What butterflies?” an incredulouslooking Tagle said, eliciting loud
laughter from his audience.
“Because as the bride walks
down the aisle, we will let fly those
butterflies,” he quoted the wedding
coordinator as saying.
“What had those butterflies got
to do with our faith? The union is
just starting, and you already have all
these flying away and separations. Do
you know their meaning?” he added.
But the wedding planner made it
known who was the boss.
“I am the coordinator. You will
start when I say so,” Tagle recalled
the wedding planner as saying.
“So, I stood up and said, `I am the
official witness of the Church here
and I am now going to start this
wedding.’ But the choir wasn’t ready
so I started (singing)`Tan-tan-tanan.
Tan-tan-tanan,” he added in jest,
singing the popular Richard Wagner
piece used in weddings.
“March! Run! Grabe…. Probably
when the (couple) watches the video
of their wedding, they’ll see again
what I did,” he said.
Tagle also noted that he had even
encountered funerals where there
were too many lights.
“I didn’t know if it were a Christmas
party instead because there were so
many Christmas lights,” he said.
The archbishop reminded the
liturgists in the audience that church
celebrations should at least “make the
faith palpable” to the people.
“Faith should be known and
professed but it also has to be
celebrated because faith is not just
received through words but also
though its symbols,” Tagle said.

Josie de Leon is one of the singers
in the community that does not do
birit songs. Hers is a voice you want to
hear singing, when you are with your
loved one, in a classy club, whether it’s
Valentine’s day or not.
Indeed Love was felt in the air that
night of February 25th at the Gateway
Center Mississauga in the “Evening of
Love and Music” concert which featured
Toronto’s Diva , Miss Josie de Leon and
her students, Minay Aleron, Glenn
Sevillo, Chadwick Sabado, Maria Salac,
Joy Vale, Haze Joy Tulod and Ashley
Suva.
The audience enjoyed a sumptuous
sit down dinner that matched the classy
ambiance provided by caterer Café
One.
Miss de Leon opened up with a bang
as she proved her singing prowess when
she opened up the concert with her own
rendition of Barbara Streisand’s, “The
Main Event.” Love songs followed one
after the other, expressing her different
vision of love through the years. Songs
like “The Way you Look Tonight”,
“Someone to Watch Over Me”, “La Vie
En Rose” and the “Carpenters Medley”
were some of the beautiful songs she
sang to the audience that night.
“Josie has an amazing voice, a witty
sense of humour, a warm charisma and a
classy personality,” says Irish Quiambao,
who was with her whole family that
evening.
The students of Josie de Leon School
of Performing Arts were also a delight
to watch and listen to. All of them
expressed their gratitude to their teacher
and mentor as they sang their hearts
and souls out with every song they
delivered.
Adding to the line-up of guest
performers that night was 2011 World
Performing Arts Champion, Mr. Gian
Carlo Bobila who sang a sweet duet
with Josie plus some solo numbers that
gave everyone the chills because of his
suave voice.
“I think we fell in love all over again!”
as most of the couples that night
commented.
It was a night to remember, truly
an evening of Love and Music. Kudos
to Studio Six production for another
successful endeavor!
Josie de Leon wowed the crowd with her renditions

CEBU CITY – An alarm saved a pawnshop in Cebu City from
burglars who, according to the police, probably spent nearly two
weeks digging a tunnel into the establishment.
“They hid and dug below the ground undetected, acting like
rats,” said Inspector Bonifacio Garciano, head of the Investigation
and Detective Management Branch (IDMB) of the Cebu City Police
Office.
It was the first time thieves dug an underground canal to reach
their target in Cebu City, he said. But the method has been
previously reported in Metro Manila and blamed on a gang known
to use acetylene torches during their heists.
The modus operandi is known in police circles as “daga-daga”,
after the Tagalog word for “rat”.
An alarm system connected to the police foiled the burglary
attempt on the Gemmary Pawnshop and Jewellery, and the culprits
ran away without any loot, even leaving their equipment behind.
Garciano said the police are looking for three to five suspects
behind the attempt.
The aborted burglary was discovered at 9 a.m. when a device
connected to the police hotline 166 was set off.
Police discovered a one-meter-deep hole inside a two-storey
commercial building, which a man had leased for three months.
The 15-meter underground tunnel led to Angel’s Sportswear, a
tailoring shop situated right beside the pawnshop.
The burglars dug upward to go inside the boutique, then bored
a hole in the wall to get inside the pawnshop.
Abandoned
Fortunately for its customers, the pawnshop’s vault was equipped
with dual locks, making it hard for the burglars to break in.
When the police reached the scene, they found bolt cutters, an
acetylene mini-tank with complete accessories, bars, a wrench,
galvanized scissors, a manual drill, and other equipment.
Police are trying to track down a certain Johnny Lo of Toledo City,
who reportedly rented the building owned by Aurora Gotingco last
January 6. He spoke with an Ilonggo accent. He told her he planned
to convert it into a massage spa.
Gotingco described the man as chubby, dark and in his 40’s. She
said Lo looked suspicious from the start.
“He didn’t even know how to spell Toledo correctly,” Gotingco
said. But after he presented an identification card and community
tax certificate, they agreed through a contract that Lo would use
the building for three months.
Lo paid P30,000, with two months’ advance.

Police saw no sign of him on Sunday, but found inside the building
many sacks of sand and soil in its storage area—apparently the
material the burglars dug up as they prepared their tunnel.
Several plastic bottles of distilled water were also recovered in
the hole.
Violeta Logronio, a cousin of the tailoring shop’s owner, said
they closed the shop at 11 p.m. last Saturday. Logronio, who lives
above the boutique, said they didn’t hear any sound, even until 1
a.m.
The pawnshop’s owner, who requested not to be named, for
security reasons, said they designed their vault to be acetyleneproof.
“I assure my clients that their belongings and money are intact.
They don’t have anything to worry about,” he said.
He said he will give rewards to those who could locate the
would-be burglars, and also urged Mayor Michael Rama to crack
the problem of burglaries.
The pawnshop, one of 60 branches nationwide, started operating
two years ago.
Well-planned
Garciano of the IDMB theorized the burglars spent two weeks
digging the tunnel. He said the attempt was well-planned.
Garciano said they will coordinate with the establishment where
the recovered tools were bought, in case they can help identify the
culprits. He had long reminded the 11 police station commanders in
the city to be observant, especially if they notice new faces in their
neighborhood. But while the tunnel-digging burglars failed, another
burglar or group of burglars scored elsewhere in the city.
Unidentified persons walked away with valuables in Maria
Theresa Village, Barangay Guadalupe.
The initial estimate said P300,000 worth of valuables were stolen
while the family of Alex Gavida, 71, slept.

OFW Teachers thrive in Thailand
Husband of murdered Pinay gets life in prison
OVERSEAS TEACHER Leah Doysabas with her

PHITSANULOK, Thailand—It is not
surprising to hear some Filipinos speak Thai
words. This is because quite a number of
Filipinos are coming to Thailand to teach.
In the ‘70s a few Filipinos came to work
with Bangkok-based international agencies
or multinational firms, or as missionaries or
entertainers. But starting around 2001, former
Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra opened
the country for teaching employment and a
new kind of migration began. A number of
those early migrant teachers were Filipino.
Some universities in Phitsanulok are going
to offer Filipino as a subject starting this year.
Many of the early migrants came as tourists
then stumbled on teaching jobs.
Michelle Santos, Stephen Luri Mercado,
Leah Doysabas and Nancy Guigue Catane,
Orly dela Cruz, Genalyn Tolentino and
Paulo Masangcay came as tourists and are
now teachers.
It wasn’t all easy going. Some Filipino
teachers felt some Thai employers favored
Caucasians over other Asians.
Leah recounts that when she first applied
she received several “Sorry-we-don’t-hireFilipinos” rejections. But she was eventually
hired in 2004 at Chalermkwansatree School,
the first Filipino to teach in one of the best
government schools in Phitsanulok City.
Some also complained that salaries of
Caucasians were much higher than those for
Filipinos.
Consul Edgar Badajos says he has heard
such complaints but “this issue cannot be fully
addressed by the embassy since this is between
the employer and the employee.” But Badajos
assured that the embassy is pushing a Bilateral
Labor Agreement between the Philippine
government and the Kingdom of Thailand to
protect Filipino migrant teachers.
For most Filipinos, it is just a matter of
patience and perseverance to look for better
paying schools.
Orly said he had problems with his
first school employer. But he, and seven
Filipinos were eventually hired by PTT (a
Thai government-owned oil company) for
deployment in school areas where oil fields
and refineries are operating.
“We do not feel discriminated here. All
of us in PTT-Rajhabhat are Filipinos,” he
states.
Husband of murdered Pinay gets
life in prison
LAS VEGAS- In April last year, a
decomposing body was found in a
backyard of a central Las Vegas home.
The body was identified as that of
45-year-old Gloria Lopez Cave.
Las Vegas Police said the decaying
body, which was in a plastic bag and
tied with a rope, was found in a shallow
grave underneath a heavy flower pot.
“It’s hard to tell what motivates a
person to commit this type of crime.
It could have been domestic violence
related or it could have been some
other motive,” said Lt. Lew Roberts,
former LVMPD spokesman.
The international manhunt for the
primary suspect Hugh Elvin Cave,
Gloria’s husband, began soon after her
body was found.
“Based on those interviews, we can
determine that he most likely have fled
to the Philippines several months prior
to the discovery of the body,” Roberts
said.
Hugh was then staying with the
family of his wife in Bataan. He had
told Gloria’s family that she died in a car
accident in Las Vegas and presented an urn
to her family.
Philippine authorities arrested Hugh
turned him over to the Federal Bureau of
Investigation.
Cave was extradited to the US.
In December last year, Hugh pleaded
guilty to first-degree murder with the use of
a deadly weapon.
“In this case, the deadly weapon was a stun
gun which we alleged he used on her while
she was in a bathtub. So he incapacitated her
with the stun gun and held her under the
water and that’s how we alleged the deadly
weapon,” said Pamela Weckerly, Deputy
District Attorney.
Weckerly added that Cave was remorseful
to the family of Gloria, but did not show any
remorse in killing his wife.
The 53-year-old Cave was sentenced
to life imprisonment in the Nevada
Department of Corrections with a minimum
of 20 years before he is eligible for parole.
“It was a brutal thing that he did and he
should have had a death penalty instead
of life,” said a Las Vegas resident, Wally
Ladboro.

MANILA -- Malacañang clarified
that

being singled out by the Bureau of
Internal Revenue (BIR) on its move
to file contempt charges against him.
Presidential spokesperson Edwin
Lacierda said BIR Commissioner
Kim Henares is “politically neutral.”
“I don’t see any reason why
Congressman Pacquiao will be
singled out,” he said, adding it was
not Henares who filed the contempt
charges but the BIR regional
director.
Pacquiao is now the subject of
a tax probe. Senator Ralph Recto
defended Pacquiao against the tax
bureau’s portrayal of the boxing
pound-for-pound king as tax
evader.
Recto said Pacquiao’s earnings
from his fights in the United States
should no longer be taxable since
he has already paid for it with the
Internal Revenue Service. “OFWs
(overseas Filipino workers) earnings
which are derived from working
abroad are not subject to tax.
Lacierda clarified, “we have an
RP-US tax treaty. And so there’s a
reciprocity provision that if you pay
taxes in the States they can be used,
credited here in the Philippines,” he
said.
“What the taxes that we’re looking
at are the taxes on incomes earned
in the Philippines, for instance,
endorsements -- the various
endorsements,” Lacierda said.

Is he now an expert in matters of the heart?
not him,” he laughs.
He notes, “Parang he revolutionalized ‘yung
dating mga shows ni Joe D’ Mango, ‘di ba? Kasi
siguro, ‘yung mga tao, tatawag kay Joe D’ Mango
dati, iiyak, magre-request ng song. And then,
babalikan na ‘yung boyfriend. Ito si Papa Jack,
he makes them realize na, ganito eh... Sabi niya,
‘Alam mo, manipis lang… manipis lang ang
pagitan ng bobo at ng tanga.’ Sobrang funny…”
When asked if he could relate to anything Papa
Jack has to say, he quips, laughing, “Na kung bobo
o tanga ako?”
We clarify the question, asking him if he relates
to how the DJ tackles issues raised by his lovelorn
callers. He responds, “I don’t think kaya kong
maging [katulad niya]…”

ohn Lloyd Cruz’ box-office strength is undeniable, what with
the success of his latest movie, “Unofficially Yours,” with Angel
Locsin. It reportedly raked in P165 million in the one month
that it ran in local theaters.
With that, John Lloyd scores his seventh film to be included
in the list of the top 15 highest grossing Filipino films of all
time, at least in the last five years, not counting the Metro
Manila Film Festival entries. Notably, his popular movies—among them
2008’s “A Very Special Love,” 2009’s “You Changed My Life,” 2011’s “My
Amnesia Girl,” to name a few—are in the romance and rom-com genre. In
that sense, could John Lloyd then be the best man to ask about matters of the
heart?
Lloydy, the next Papa Jack?
It is easy to think that John Lloyd could easily let fame and fortune get
into his head. But he does have his own means for a reality check. In an
exclusive Bulletin Entertainment one-on-one during his re-launch as the
brand endorser for Jack n’ Jill Magic, he reveals, “You know what keeps me
grounded? AM radio.”
He explains, “Kasi [nagiging] mas in touch ka sa reality ng araw-araw na
buhay ng mas maraming Pinoy… dun sa kung ano ba talaga ‘yung nangyayari
around you, kung ano ba talaga ‘yung pinag-uusapan, ‘yung dapat pag-usapan
at ‘yung hindi dapat pag-usapan.”
Another radio favorite also appears to be teaching him a thing or two
about keeping it real. “Alam mo si Papa Jack [from Love Radio]? Seryoso!
Ang tagal ko nang naiisip, ‘Bakit ko kaya gustong-gusto ‘to?’ Hindi lang siya
entertainment for me eh. Kasi they tackle mga, sometimes absurd pero most
of the time, totoong problema ng mga totoong tao. You may laugh about it,
you might find it stupid, pero ‘yun talaga ang problema niya eh.”
Apparently enjoying listening to the DJ bluntly dishing out love advice,
John Lloyd enjoins, “Pero may sense [siya], ‘di ba? Tama siya eh, gusto niyang
ma-realize nung tao na, ‘My God, wake up!’”
Hearing him speak about love problems brings to mind John Lloyd’s
own girl troubles, which have, unfortunately, become very public. With his
relationships turned into public spectacles, the actor has repeatedly had to
explain himself when issues surface. Perhaps in a sense, listening to other
people’s problems and how the DJ puts them in their place gives John Lloyd a
wider perspective.
Then comes a revelation: “Eto, walang exaggeration ha. Nagkaroon ng
concept dati, sa ABS[-CBN], parang they wanted to give me, like, that
show—like Papa Jack’s show.”
He says it would have been on Studio 23. True story or not, one thing is
sure—John Lloyd knows his own limits. “Sabi ko, ‘Well, thank you for the
offer pero I don’t think kaya kong gawin ‘yung ginagawa niya.’ Because I’m

Back in December, a few months after he and
girlfriend Shaina Magdayao reportedly decided to
put their relationship on hold, John Lloyd noted
he was only looking forward to improving himself
this year. “Siguro ‘yung pinakamagandang regalo
ko [sa sarili ko] is I’m getting a new place… my
own place. Dun ako nae-excite eh.”
Although he said then that this wasn’t where
he planned to settle down for good, even
saying during the media huddle that he wasn’t
think about marriage yet, he did say it was in
preparation “dun sa gusto kong matutunan. To be
on my own… how to take care of domestic stuff,
like ‘yung bills.”
He is also putting a high premium on health.
“Strengthening my core—both body and soul,”
he points out. “May problema na ako sa back. So
dapat ang su-support sayo talaga ‘yung core mo.
So kailangan ko ma-strengthen ‘yun.”
And although he plans to hit the gym, he is not
envisioning muscling up like a good number of
men who become gym habitués. “Siyempre ako pa
rin ‘yung representative ng karamihan ng lalaki,”
he says good-naturely, joking, “Ang tunay na lalaki
ay walang abs.”
Lucky in love and life
John Lloyd says it’s not always easy to deal
with media “attacks.” He admits, “When you’re
in that moment parang you wanna fight back.
Nanggigigil ka. Pero, hindi kasi eh, it’s not gonna
be a wise decision. What comes around goes
around… andiyan din ang karma.”
While their relationship took a hit, it
nevertheless didn’t take long for John Lloyd and
Shaina to reconcile, apparently after settling
things individually, as he told Korina Sanchez in a
February interview. Saying they are much happier
now and are paying more attention to each other’s
needs, he also expressed, “Sana talaga, sana I’m
doing a good job being Shaina’s boyfriend.”
John Lloyd’s appeal does make him the perfect
endorser for Jack n’ Jill Magic. And clearly, his
magic isn’t waning anytime soon. Aside from
his love life being on the upswing, his career
is still enjoying a pretty good run. In fact, fans
can expect to see more of him in an upcoming
teleserye with former screen partner Bea Alonzo
and the planned third installment to his and Sarah
Geronimo’s successful box office pairing.
During the thanksgiving/victory party for
“Unofficially Yours,” John Lloyd expressed
gratefulness to their fans, telling the media that
their constant support and expectations “keep us
inspired and on our toes.”

vestiges of the stigma associated with
belonging to the lower classes. That Hong
Kong writer’s words were seen as insulting
to the dignity of the migrant workers who
often chafe at being treated like slaves by
some Chinese—an irony since many of
the Hong Kongers’ forebears were refugees
from the mainland where they were once
themselves enslaved.
In the late 1770s Napoleon is said to
have denigrated the British by saying they
belonged to a Nation of Shopkeepers, a
people whom he considered unfit to fight
the French. But he was proved wrong
because Britain begun to industrialize and
quickly developed into a prosperous world
power.
During a crime wave in the 20s, the
US gained a reputation as a Nation of
Gangsters, but its steady rise to booming
prosperity after World War II soon
expunged that label as the country became
famous for being the land of plenty and
opportunity.
When the communists eradicated the
feudal system that had kept China poor for
centuries, the hard labor imposed by Mao
Tse Tung on all citizens meant that both
sexes toiled incessantly, dressed in drab blue
uniforms. As the world looked on, some
dubbed China a Nation of Blue Ants.
Now that writer Mona Simpson, the sister
of the late Steve Jobs, has written a book
in which a main protagonist is a Filipino
nanny, one wonders if Pinoys would again
feel belittled, just like when the Hong
Kong columnist hung the servant label on
our citizenry. But in this case Simpson has
created a strong and admirable character in
the person of the nanny, giving a different
slant to the old mistress and maid theme.
Simpson’s book “My Hollywood” deals
with the life of an American woman, a
professional composer, with her television
writer husband. Living on the fringes of
Hollywood society, they hire a nanny for
their young son. The chapters alternate
between the voices of the American woman,
whose life seems to be unraveling, and the
Filipina, whose existence is the typical
domestic-supporting-family-back-home.
The writing is sociologically perceptive
and skillfully catches the cadences of Pinoy
English, though one wonders why Simpson
chose the Tagalog word for grandmother
for her protagonist, “Lola,” and why she
made Tagaytay Lola’s hometown when
it’s nothing like the barrios of Ilocos and
Davao from where many of the migrants
hail.
Well-off Americans have traditionally
imported Irish au pairs (nannies) for their
children. Today Latinas and Filipinas have
taken on that role. A multitude of Hong
Kong’s Pinay workers have migrated to
Canada as well.
When the late President Cory Aquino
went on her first state visit abroad, to Italy,
she held a press conference on her return.
This was when the term “national heroes”
had patronizingly been given to the hordes
of our migrant workers. Cory related with
pride that the mayor of Rome told her he
had a Pinoy cook. She seemed to show
no compunction that the country was
exporting human beings like commodities
and encouraged the trade, as would her
successors—and did Ferdinand Marcos
before her.
Perceived insults to our nation produced
an embarrassing episode during Cory’s
regime. The embassy in London one day
claimed that aspersions had been cast on
Filipina womanhood in the new Oxford
Dictionary, where an entry defined the
word “Filipina” as housemaid. Incensed, our
foreign secretary sent a letter of protest to
London. A reply soon arrived, pointing to
the French term “fille de chamber” defined
as chambermaid. There was no mention of
Filipinas, leaving our officials with egg on
their faces.
Misplaced sensitivities over migrant
workers strike a chord nowadays when
depressed economies worldwide drive
many to work in the service sectors.
The “Upstairs Downstairs” syndrome is
everywhere, indeed the hit British TV
series “Downton Abbey” chronicles the
lives of an aristocratic family and the events
that impinge on them as well as on their
platoon of servants.
There is no room for superiority or
inferiority complexes in today’s world.
And although the Philippines seems
to be “falling off the Asian map,” as an
Australian analyst has written recently, it
survives and thrives. The perennial bad
governance and corruption may persist,
with migrants still seeking survival abroad.
Such a reality means that other novels like
Mona Simpson’s “My Hollywood” may
go on being written, and not just by nonFilipinos.

For years now, Luis Manzano has been
cohosting all sorts of TV shows. But in the
minds of some televiewers the key question
remains: Does he have
it in him to become as
good a game and talk
show host as his dad,

Well, last month
at least, the first part
of that question was
answered in the positive
when Luis hosted the game show “Deal or
No Deal.” He turned out to be a fair enough
game show host, so there’s hope that, in due
time, he could do even better at his latest
“sideline.”
Hosting a game show well is both a
craft and an art, which is why so few TV
personalities emerge as masters of the genre.
Thus far in his TV hosting career, Luis has
relied on his sardonic sense of humor to get
by with passing marks, if not actually flying
colors, but a game show requires handling
that is more meticulous and psychologically
savvy.
Of course, when he’s finally ready, Luis
could get as his ultimate celebrity contestants
(separately, of course) his own parents, the
source of his lively set of performing genes—
Vilma Santos and Edu Manzano.

Borgy Manotoc was just as charming as
his mom, Imee. He spoke highly of Ilocos,

that comprise an original, “Ikaw Lamang,”

But while he can’t remake his old songs
for now, there is something else to watch out
for from The Concert King: A remake of his
late-night talk show, coming very soon in

You spoke to over a thousand
clients of the Bank of the
Philippine Islands today. You

work, they go up and down on the stairs,
they go on their knees… And there was
something very sad to me about that.
She wanted to start saving the money
for herself when she got older. And that
had a profound effect on me. I can’t quite
explain it. This is a woman who didn’t see
her child from the age of 5 until the age
of 15, because she couldn’t go home until
she got her green card, and it took 10
years. She cared enough for her family to
not see her child for 10 years! And now
she voluntarily doesn’t wanna go home.
Seeing this on the people who work for
me—because these people are the closest
people to you—they see you as you
really are, when you get out of bed in the
morning, when you’re fighting, they see
everything about you. So on some level,
they’ve had my heart. That [prepaid] card
that I made, the call center is here. And I

come home. Last year one of them didn’t
wanna go home anymore. So I asked why.
And she said, “Because when I go home, all

wanted it in the Philippines not because
it’s cheaper. I wanted it to be here
because I know that I could train those
people to be stronger. I’m personally
training so they’ll answer questions even
if they don’t know the answer. I’m trying
to teach them to say, “I don’t know. I’ll
get back to you.” I’m trying to teach
them that it’s all right to be strong and
to be firm, to be assertive. You bring
that with a heart and the desire to serve,
which is in your nature. There are no
greater workers than Filipinos. There’s
something about them. So when KT
goes to hire, she specifically says, “I want
to hire Filipinos.”
So what are you gonna do with

Philippines remains on the United
States Trade Representative’s (USTR)
“watch list” of nations where pirated
and counterfeit goods are readily
available, according to the US
Department of State.
In a report posted on the website of
the US Embassy in Manila, the state
department said the USTR “retained
the Philippines on its Special 301
Watch List for 2011.” Manila was also
on the list in 2010.
The USTR “lauded recently passed
legislation aimed at illegal video
recording in movie theaters and
Philippine efforts to enforce bans on
pirated and counterfeit goods.”
The
Washington,
DC-based
agency, however, “lamented inherent
weaknesses within the judiciary system
that lead to limited enforcement of
Intellectual Property Rights laws,”
noted the state department.
The USTR—which is responsible
for developing and coordinating
American
international
trade,
commodities and direct investment
policies—expressed concern over the
ineffective enforcement of intellectual
property rights in the Philippines.
Aside from the Philippines, other
countries on the USTR watch list of
havens of fake clothing, shoes, watches
and handbags include Malaysia,
Vietnam, Brunei, Bolivia, Brazil,
Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican
Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, Kuwait,
Lebanon, Finland, Greece, Guatemala,
Romania, Spain and Ukraine.
On the other hand, 11 nations are
on the USTR’s “priority watch list”—
China, Russia, Algeria, Argentina,
Canada, Chile, India, Indonesia,
Pakistan, Thailand and Venezuela.

members of the host family and shall be given pocket
money and share in child care, light household
chores and responsibilities as stipulated in the
placement contract between the au pair and the host
family.
In his memorandum, David said the
implementation of the new guidelines was deferred
to make allowances for those who are still unaware of
the lifting of the policy.
He said that starting last March 19, departing au
pairs need only to present simplified documentary
requirements to the immigration counter.
Such documents include a contract of engagement
or letter of undertaking executed by the au pair and
host family duly-authenticated by the Philippine
embassy or consulate in the European country.
The au pair shall also present a valid passport
with valid au pair visa to the country of destination
and a certificate from the Commission on Filipinos
Overseas, indicating that they have attended a
familiarization seminar about the European country
conducted by the commission.
David stressed that au pairs are no longer required
to get exit permits from the Philippine Overseas
Employment Administration as they are not
considered overseas Filipino workers.
Earlier, Vice-President Jejomar Binay announced
the lifting of the ban on au pairs to Europe. A ban
had been imposed due to isolated cases of abuse of
the “adoption” scheme by unscrupulous elements.
Binay said the new guidelines were drafted by a
technical working group composed of representatives
from the Departments of Foreign Affairs, Labor and
Employment, and Education; Philippine Overseas
Employment Administration; Commission on
Filipino Overseas; and the BI.

Youth protesters—looking bored and lazy—lie on the ground
in a latest protest gimmick called ‘noynoying.’
“MANILA, Philippines - NOYNOYING,” the term coined
by student protesters to describe laziness and to spite
President Benigno Aquino 3rd, went viral on the Internet
as photos of an apparently ill Chief Executive doing
some paperwork and students striking “idle” poses
clogged the social media.
Stating that the truth hurts, retired Archbishop Oscar
Cruz said Saturday Malacañang should not complain but
should simply absorb the message of the latest protest
gimmick of militants: “noynoying.”
Cruz, a known Aquino critic, said “noynoying”—a newly
coined word that plays on the President’s nickname
and is used to describe a passive protest act of just
lying down and doing nothing— was a jab at President
Benigno Aquino’s supposedly “do nothing” leadership
style which, he said, was “not altogether false.”
“The truth is painful. The new word could be annoying
but it is not altogether false,” Cruz said in an interview.
“The reality in the word is what makes it rather
interesting and relevant. Otherwise, it is not worth the ire
or disgust of Malacañang,” he added.
Cruz said “noynoying” was “another novel expression
in line with KKK” or the protest term for “kaibigan,
kaklase, at kabarilan (friends, classmates, and fellow gun
enthusiasts)” coined by the President’s critics to describe
close associates he appointed and retained in power
despite controversies surrounding them.
“Instead of becoming angry, Malacañang should
instead get the message behind the word and the gesture
that goes with it,” Cruz said.
Aquino denies negotiation on
communist leader’s return
President Benigno Aquino III denied that a negotiation
has been ongoing for the return of Jose Ma. Sison, the
founder of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), in
the country.
“There is no negotiation on his (Sison’s) return,” he said,
adding that Sison would only go back in the country if there
would be a clear discussion on the peace process.
Aquino urged the rebels to just bring the issue on a
debate and not through using guns.
Recent reports claimed that the exiled communist leader
returned to the country under the name Renato Malaya
on January 20 on board an airplane that landed at the
Diosdado Macapagal International Airport in Pampanga.
The military dismissed the report saying the
“disinformation” was based only on circulating text
messages.
The government has been trying to forge a final peace
accord with the CPP and its armed-wing New People’s Army,
which has been waging war for over four decades.
But because of the reforms that his administration has
been implementing, Aquino said he was informed that these
groups who used to contradict him now decrease.
“I was told that they (contrarians) even declined,” he
said.
“So, the vast majority of our people, I think, are with me in
the direction that we want to track,” he said.

of his works include the
“Oedipus and Antigone,”
“The Siesta”and “Christian
Virgins Exposed to the
Mob,” which won a silver
medal at the 1884 Madrid
Exposition of Fine Arts.
He died on March 13,
1913.

MANILA, Philippines – Angel Aquino
has happily admitted being in a relationship
for a little over two months now.
“We’ve been together… Kasi sabi ko, ‘Oh,
sige. Officially, January 1 tayo.’ Para, ‘di ba,
new year, new life, new relationship,” Angel
shared in an interview on “Kris TV.”
Without actually giving the identity of
her new love, she shared, “He’s younger by
two years. He’s also in business.
“He’s single, never been married. I’m a
lucky girl to have met this person.”
More, Angel said that her two teenage
daughters from a previous marriage
approve of him “very much,” and that the
four of them spend time together through
sleepovers at his place and out-of-towntrips.
“He’s just so sweet to the girls, sobra,”
she gushed.
The actress-model admitted, “I’ve never
felt this strongly for anyone, or this deeply.
And this sure. The certainty that I feel now
for this person is different.”
It was February last year when Angel
confirmed the breakup of her four-year
relationship with actor Lui Villaruz, who’s
five years her junior. She then focused on
her family and daughters, who are “the
most important people in my life.”
“And I think it was the perfect time kasi
ngayon alam mo na okay ka na… this is the
first time na matagal akong single, a year.
Sabi ko sa sarili ko I will give myself at
least one year. And it happened. Dumating
siya at the perfect time and when he did,
alam mo ‘yon, wala kang hang-ups,” Angel
related.

The rising Filipino classical-pop tenor quartet, The
Angelos, dubbed as Asia’s answer to world famous

Bianca King to direct ads

– Actress Bianca King had
just finished her degree in
Digital Filmmaking yet
she’s already being tapped
by a local production
house to be one of their
in-house directors.
Bianca has yet to make her decision on
the offer, which came this month, as they
are still undergoing “initial talks.”
“Sinabi nila na interested sila sa akin.
Sinabi ko rin sa kanila ang gusto ko. Pero
inaantay pa nilang matapos ang [TV series]
‘Broken Vow’ para makapag-work ako sa
kanila,” the actress said.
Bianca said that she was asked by said
outfit to direct TV ads. It seems Bianca
is leaning towards accepting the directorial
offer, especially since she has no show lined
up yet after “Broken Vow.”
Meanwhile, Bianca answered in the
affirmative when asked if she would be
willing to direct her rumored boyfriend and
actor Dennis Trillo, whom she described as
“very witty,” a “hands-on dad” to his and
beauty queen Carlene Aguilar’s son Calix,
“malalim mag-isip,” and has “a good sense

Rochelle Pangilinan grabs her chance
Rochelle Pangilinan is happy that she
was the one chosen to be Rocco Nacino’s
leading lady, Saridandan, in “Lam-ang,”
the indie movie about the Ilocano epic
hero to be directed by Anna Agabin and
to be shot on location in Ilocos this month.
They want a morena actress who can dance
and she certainly fits the bill.

and Suze and I helped in financing the
school in the village. So we said, when
the school is finished we’ll start a Suze
Orman scholarship.
SO: I wanna work closely with
Doris to see… I have this vision for the
Philippines. Rather than all these people
sending money home to their families,
what if we can have each village have
a fund and all the people send money
home to the fund, and have all these Alisters adopt a village? For every dollar
that’s in the fund, they give two.
So they match it dollar for
dollar?
SO: Yes. The money goes into a fund
to help the entire village versus just a
few who have family working overseas.
Then the people in the village aren’t just
dependent on their family overseas, so
that the family overseas can keep some
money for themselves. It’s supplemented
by all these people who have wealth. So
each village has this system, and they
have advisers who can invest the money,
and who could tell them how to grow
it for the village. The village gets to
prosper and everybody gets picked up
because everyone is a part of it versus
just a few. I’d like to see if that idea
could work here. That’s my new thing.
I think that can happen, rather than
these rich people just giving money and
it’s charity. They’re matching one to
one, even two or three to one! I think it
could work! And I think the rich people
would like to do that. They want to see
their names on things.

difficult,” he said. He claimed he
is very fortunate to have seen the
transformation in communications

hallowed field for 22-year-old Cabrrera
as Binay gave the Vice Presidential
Saber and likewise when Aquino gave
the Air Force Professional Course
plaque and the Jusmag and Philippine
Air Force Saber.
Class 2012 Bagwis is presented as a
perfect example of what the PMA as an
institution is doing to erase a culture of
maltreatment describing the class as the
strongest in physical training and core
values.
The class was required to have new
training, requiring the new officers to
swim a mile in open sea and completed
a 42.2-kilomter run. They were also
brought to Tirad Pass to strengthen
their patriotism.
The PMA training camp was named
after Gregorio del Pilar, the hero of
Tirad Pass, who died at the age of 24.
Bagwis is composed of 187 cadets,
168 are male and 19 are female.
In his speech, Aquino highlighted
efforts to set up 21,800 housing units
for soldiers and police in Luzon by
the National Housing Authority and
another 30,000 units for the Bureaus
of Jail Management and Penology, Fire
and Corrections now expanding to
Luzon and Mindanao.
Aquino also announced the lighting
of 1,520 sitios completed in 18 months
to better secure far-flung areas.
